    Abstract: Neo-Victorian Things: Re-Imagining Nineteenth-Century Material Cultures in Literature and Film is the first volume to focus solely on the replication, reconstruction, and re-presentation of Victorian things. It investigates the role of materiality in contemporary returns to the past as a means of assessing the function of things in remembering, revisioning, and/or reimagining the nineteenth century. Examining iterations of material culture in literature, film and popular television series, this volume offers a reconsideration of nineteenth-century things and the neo-Victorian cultural forms that they have inspired, animated, and even haunted. By turning to new and relatively underexplored strands of neo-Victorian materiality—including opium paraphernalia, slave ships, clothing, and biographical objects—and interrogating the critical role such objects play in reconstructing the past, this volume offers ways of thinking about how mis/apprehensions of material culture in the nineteenth century continue to shape our present understanding of things.

    Abstract: Minu Hedayati-Aliabadi zeigt anhand ihrer deutsch–US-amerikanischen Studie, dass der Begriff Slam Poetry in erster Linie als Bedeutungsträger für performative, zeitgenössische und interaktive Literatur verwendet wird, während die reale Ausprägung bei Veranstaltungen weniger interaktiv ist. Sie setzt sich in Ihrer Arbeit mit den Ansichten und Handlungsweisen der beteiligten Akteure auseinander und untersucht das in 1986 in Chicago entstandene Veranstaltungsformat Poetry Slam. 1989 wurde dieses durch die Slam-Szene in New York City international bekannt und kann aufgrund der Ergebnisse der Studie in Deutschland heute als wenig elitäres, nicht kommerzielles, geplantes und kulturelles Event klassifiziert werden, das hauptsächlich von jungen Erwachsenen aus dem Bildungsbürgertum besucht wird. Inhalt Tradition und Kontext von Poetry Slam Literarische und performative Facetten von Slam Poetry Situierung der untersuchten Poetry Slams Zielgruppen Dozierende und Studierende aus den Bereichen Literatur-, Kommunikations- und Theaterwissenschaft sowie Cultural Studies, Performance Studies und Soziologie Autorinnen und Autoren sowie Fachkräfte aus Kunst und Literatur Die Autorin Minu Hedayati-Aliabadi war wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für deutsche Literatur der TU Dortmund und ist derzeit Lehrerin am Maria-Wächtler-Gymnasium Essen. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Spoken Word, Intermedialität von bildender Kunst und Literatur sowie zeitgenössische Kinder- und Jugendliteratur.

    Abstract: This book examines ‘Southern Gothic’ - a term that describes some of the finest works of the American Imagination. But what do ‘Southern’ and ‘Gothic’ mean, and how are they related? Traditionally seen as drawing on the tragedy of slavery and loss, ‘Southern Gothic’ is now a richer, more complex subject. Thirty-five distinguished scholars explore the Southern Gothic, under the categories of Poe and his Legacy; Space and Place; Race; Gender and Sexuality; and Monsters and Voodoo. The essays examine slavery and the laws that supported it, and stories of slaves who rebelled and those who escaped. Also present are the often-neglected issues of the Native American presence in the South, socioeconomic class, the distinctions among the several regions of the South, same-sex relationships, and norms of gendered behaviour. This handbook covers not only iconic figures of Southern literature but also other less well-known writers, and examines gothic imagery in film and in contemporary television programmes such as True Blood and True Detective

    Abstract: Trauma has become a hotly contested topic in literary studies. But interest in trauma is not new; its roots extend to the Romantic period, when novelists and the first psychiatrists influenced each others' investigations of the 'wounded mind'. This book looks back to these early attempts to understand trauma, reading a selection of Romantic novels in dialogue with Romantic and contemporary psychiatry. It then carries that dialogue forward to postmodern fiction, examining further how empirical approaches can deepen our theorizations of trauma.     Abstract: "The present volume is based on an international colloquium convened in 2010 to which scholars from North America and Europe contributed papers dealing with the historical, cultural, and literary connections between Canada and the American South. The essays on this broad but under-researched topic are arranged in four sections reflecting the multiple ties and the cultural circulation between the two large North American regions. They illuminate demographic facts and developments, and their literary representations, such as the enforced displacement of the 18th century Acadiens, who later reassembled in Louisiana (Cajun culture), and the flight of thousands of fugitive (African American) slaves to the safe haven of Canada.     Abstract: Earlier theses on the history of childhood can now be laid to rest and a fundamental paradigm shift initiated, as there is an overwhelming body of evidence to show that in medieval and early modern times too there were close emotional relations between parents and children. The contributors to this volume demonstrate conclusively on the one hand how intensively parents concerned themselves with their children in the pre-modern era, and on the other which social, political and religious conditions shaped these relationships. These studies in emotional history demonstrate how easy it is for a subjective choice of sources, coupled with faulty interpretations – caused mainly by modern prejudices toward the Middle Ages in particular – to lead to the view that in the past children were regarded as small adults. The contributors demonstrate convincingly that intense feelings – admittedly often different in nature – shaped the relationship between adults and children. Albrecht Classen is University Distinguished Professor at the University of Arizona, Department of German Studies, Tucson, AZ, USA.

    Abstract: What sorts of cultural criticism are teachers and scholars to produce, and how can that criticism be "employed" in the culture at large?. In recent years, debates about the role and direction of English departments have mushroomed into a broader controversy over the public legitimacy of literary criticism. At first glance this might seem odd: few taxpayers and legislators care whether the nation's English professors are doing justice to the project of identifying the beautiful and the sublime. But in the context of the legitimation crisis in American higher education, the image of English departments has in fact played a major role in determining public attitudes toward colleges and college faculty. Similarly, the changing economic conditions of universities have prompted many English professors to rethink their relations to their "clients," asking how literary study can serve the American public
