Abstract: This book has two main objectives. The first is to identify and adequately describe the phenomenon of empathy. This essentially means offering a strong, reasoned and accurate description of the phenomenon of empathy in order to capture the essence of the empathic phenomenon and clearly distinguish it from other similar emotional phenomena such as sympathy or compassion The second part focuses on the role that this phenomenon can play on the ethical-moral level. The question is whether empathy is necessary or at least important for morality, and if so, to what extent, in what way and for what reasons. This is an open access book.

Abstract: 1 Introduction -- 2 The legal framework of consultation with indigenous peoples -- 3 Assessing consultation with indigenous peoples in the Inter-American System of Human Rights -- 4 Assessing consultation with indigenous peoples in Brazil -- 5 Assessing the application of consultation and indigenous peoples’ Protocols -- 6 Towards efficacy: Between the legal uncertainty of the requirement of consultation and its most adequate application for Brazil -- 7 Conclusion.
Abstract: This book offers a novel perspective on consultation with indigenous peoples in projects of natural resource exploitation. Engaging with current debates in international law, the study introduces a multi-dimensional perspective on consultation understood to include self-determination and cultural rights. It analyzes evidence from several countries across the Americas and Africa and presents an original and in-depth case study of Brazil. The book assesses judicial and legislative cases, drawing on relevant literature, international treaties and supplementary information gained from expert interviews. This supports the work’s broader objective to explore legal facts as well as to evaluate the empirical evidence in light of theoretical considerations. It thereby expands the understanding of consultation as a right under national legal systems and considers practical ways on how to enforce domestic redress for avoiding legal indeterminacy. The conclusions of the analysis contribute to not only a better understanding of the subject matter but also showcase ways of how to improve the realities on the ground. The book puts forward a range of recommendations directed at national authorities, international organizations, development lenders and civil society to help improve the unsatisfactory present circumstances. The intended audience encompasses legal scholars, students, practitioners and journalists, as well as anyone interested in research on the realization of indigenous peoples’ rights and the role of international law in the 21st century. .

A Technopolitical Network for Participatory Democracy: The Future of a Collective Platform.
Abstract: This Open Access book explains the philosophy, design principles, and community organization of Decidim and provides essential insights into how the platform works. Decidim is the world leading digital infrastructure for participatory democracy, built entirely and collaboratively as free software, and used by more than 500 institutions with over three million users worldwide. The platform allows any organization (government, association, university, NGO, neighbourhood, or cooperative) to support multitudinous processes of participatory democracy. In a context dominated by corporate-owned digital platforms, in the era of increasing social structuring via Artificial Intelligence, Decidim stands as a public or community owned platform for collective human intelligence. Yet, the project is much more than its technological features. Decidim is in itself a crossroad of the various dimensions of the networked society, a detailed practical map of its complexities and conflicts. The authors distinguish three general dimensions of the project: (1) the political - shedding light on the democratic model that Decidim promotes and its impact on public policies and organizations, (2) the technopolitical - explaining how this technology is democratically designed and managed to produce and protect certain political effects, and (3) the technical - presenting the conditions of production, operation, and success of the project. This book systematically covers those three levels in an academically sound, technologically consistent, and politically innovative manner. Serving as a useful resource and handbook for the use of Decidim, it will not only appeal to students and scholars interested in participatory and digital democracy but also to professionals, policy-makers, and a wider audience interested in learning more about the Decidim platform. This is an open access book.

Abstract: Intelligent systems research is a multidisciplinary field that focuses on the development of systems that can perceive, reason, and act autonomously. This can include areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and robotics. The goal of intelligent systems research is to develop systems that can understand, learn from, and adapt to their environment, to perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence. Business and innovation research is an interdisciplinary field that examines how organizations can create, develop, and implement new ideas, products, and services. This can include areas such as organizational behaviour, strategic management, and marketing. The goal of business and innovation research is to understand how organizations can foster an environment that encourages creativity and innovation, and how they can develop and implement new ideas in a way that leads to success. Intelligent Systems, Business and Innovation Research is a research area that brings together these two fields to study the use of intelligent systems and technologies in the business context to drive innovation, improve operational efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. The book aims to understand how intelligent systems can be used in business applications, how to design and implement them, how to manage the associated challenges, and how to leverage them to foster innovation, create new business models, and gain competitive advantage. It offers guidance on how to navigate potential conflicts and challenges that may arise during multidisciplinary research in areas such as Industry 4.0, Internet of Things, modern machine learning, software agent applications, and data science. The book focuses on the various fields in which intelligent systems play a critical role in enabling the development of advanced technologies that can perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence. For example, in smart/control systems, intelligent algorithms can be used to optimize the performance of machines and devices, while in cyber security, they can be used to protect networks and data from cyber-attacks. In bioinformatics, intelligent systems can be used to analyse large amounts of biological data, while in virtual reality and robotics, they can be used to create realistic and responsive simulations and automatons. Additionally, the book also highlights the rapidly advancing theoretical foundations of fuzzy sets, mathematical logic, and non-classical logic. These are important theoretical frameworks for the development of intelligent systems, as they provide the foundation for the representation and manipulation of uncertainty, complexity, and imprecision. These theoretical foundations are essential in the development of intelligent systems that can make decisions and perform tasks in uncertain, complex, and dynamic environments.

Abstract: Universities have long been dominated by a philosophy of inquiry that may be called knowledge-inquiry. This holds that, in order to do justice to the basic humanitarian aim of helping to promote human welfare, academic inquiry must, in the first instance, seek knowledge and technological know-how. First, knowledge is to be acquired; once acquired, it can be applied to help promote human welfare. But this philosophy of knowledge-inquiry is an intellectual and humanitarian disaster. It violates three of the four most elementary rules of rational problem solving conceivable, and as a result fails to give priority to the task of helping humanity resolve those conflicts and problems of living, such as the climate and nature crises, that need to be resolved if we are to make progress to a better world – a world in which there is peace, democracy, justice, liberty, and sustainable prosperity, for all. Very few academics today are aware of this rationality scandal. We urgently need to bring about a revolution in universities around the world, wherever possible, so that academic inquiry puts all four rules of rational problem solving into practice, and becomes rationally devoted to helping humanity learn how to make progress towards a better world. Knowledge-inquiry needs to become wisdom-inquiry, rationally devoted to helping humanity create a wiser world. Nicholas Maxwell is Emeritus Reader at University College London. He has devoted much of his working life to arguing we need to bring about a revolution in academia so that it comes to seek and promote wisdom and does not just acquire and apply knowledge. He has published fifteen books on this theme.

Abstract: This book explores the relationship between federalism, social divides and conflict in African countries. It details the origins, design and performance of major federal and quasi-federal states to assess their performance and propose new methods for managing these divides. Drawing on evidence from countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, the book examines the nature and causes of ethnonationalism, mobilisation and confrontation with the nation state. The book is a comprehensive treatment of the five major federal and devolved systems in Africa. It explains their origin, design and operation, and assesses their performance. More importantly, the book explains the distinct nature of federal and devolved systems in the Global South. Federal and devolved systems in Africa cannot be understood in isolation from the nature of state power on the continent. The book explains the impact of unregulated state power on the dynamics of federal and devolved systems in Africa. Federalism and devolution have not failed but have been betrayed – both in the past and the present – in serving as a venue for accommodation, intergovernmental bargaining and negotiated reform. Assefa Fiseha is Professor of Law and Governance at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.

Abstract: This book contains papers in the fields of engineering pedagogy education, research in engineering pedagogy, and games in engineering education. The authors are currently witnessing a significant transformation in the development of education on all levels and especially in post-secondary education. To face these challenges, higher education must find innovative and effective ways to respond in a proper way. The pandemic period left us with profound changes in the way we teach and learn, including the massive use of new means of communication, such as videoconferencing and other technological tools. Moreover, the current explosion of artificial intelligence tools, mainly used by students, is challenging teaching practices maintained for centuries. Scientifically based statements as well as excellent best practice examples are absolutely necessary. The 26th International Conference on Interactive Collaborative Learning (ICL2023), which took place in Madrid, Spain, between September 26 and 30, 2023, was the perfect place where current trends in higher education were presented and discussed. Since its beginning in 1998, this conference has been devoted to new approaches in learning with a focus on collaborative learning in higher education. Nowadays, the ICL conferences are a forum of the exchange of relevant trends and research results as well as the presentation of practical experiences in learning and engineering pedagogy. In this way, the authors try to bridge the gap between ‘pure’ scientific research and the everyday work of educators. Interested readership includes policy makers, academics, educators, researchers in pedagogy and learning theory, schoolteachers, learning industry, further and continuing education lecturers, etc.

Abstract: Environmental risks put one in six people at risk, as well as our complex ecosystems. Today, IoT sites can monitor the environment and assess risks. Clean technologies can help detect toxic substances, chemical spills, hazardous pollutants, and other issues, enabling both governments and industries to clean or protect the air, land, water, and other environments, and how IoT can support these processes. IoT-enabled environmental intelligence is the constant measurement and collection of our physical environment, through sensors and smart devices. Integrated sensors in irrigation facilities, water supply systems, pipelines, cisterns, weather stations, ocean, and industrial facilities—anywhere on the globe—can record temperature, relative humidity, water content, leaks, and any other physical parameters.

Abstract: By 2027, it had been seven years since the scientists’ sea-changing research on artificial psychology and robotics. The work debuted around the same time as Large Language Model Chatbots, and the power of the integration of the two technologies put many industries in a tailspin. The commercial and defense industries especially were still scrambling to regulate their use in research and universities. The sought-after scientists signed with DARPA to build reliable and secure AI entities, but the agency grew fearful of the technology’s power and ultimately decided it was too dangerous to bring to market and demanded the scientists destroy the work. The researchers couldn’t bring themselves to discard 20 years of research, so instead sent the entities to various research labs around the world. But unbeknownst to them, each AI-entity embraced its new home, growing, adapting, evolving, and ultimately connecting beyond what the researchers could envision. In the end, as the scientists catch up to each one, they realize the entities have discovered a very human means of interacting: the power of physical contact; and not physical contact between humans and technology, but physical contact between robotic entities. And with this discovery, the entities join forces to only grow stronger. This development ushers in a new paradigm where the difference between AI-entities and human entities becomes less and less discernible. All the AI and robotic science featured in the book is real; the story line is fictional, but with how fast innovation moves, it’s not hard to envision.

Abstract: This book explores the impact of news and literary journalism on human cognition and emotion. Providing an innovative analysis of psycho-physiological measures, including emotional response, perception of pain, and changes in heartbeat, Nery seeks to understand how readers react to journalistic texts. There is a growing enthusiasm in the search for understanding the processing of information, with some already arguing for the establishment of the neuroscience of communication as a new discipline. By combing neuroscience methods with communication research studies, specifically journalistic research and theory, Nery offers us a unique way of exploring and thinking about news, literary journalism, and the brain. Isabel Nery is an award-winning journalist and researcher, with a PhD in Communication Studies. Her previous works include: ‘Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen’, biography, ‘The 5 Men Who Changed Portugal Forever’, crossed biographies, ‘The Prisoners’, reportage, and ‘Assault to Parliament', about the Portuguese political transition to democracy.

Abstract: This book explores the under-researched sources of the consumerist culture and the environmental damage it has brought about. The book is an outcome of the symposium on “The Ethics of Consumption” organised and hosted by the Las Casas Institute at the Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford as part of its Economics as a Moral Science Programme. It takes on two contemporary problems: the human weakness and capacity for wrong-doing, and the failure of modern economic theory to account for the moral character of human behaviour and its implicit encouragement of gluttonous life-styles. In a time when grand political schemes are proposed to revive sustainability of global economy, the authors of the papers collected in this book highlight the need for moral renewal without which the most revolutionary structural reforms are bound to fail at producing the desired outcome. Topics of the book include the meaning and sources of avarice, the attempt to define what is enough, exploration of philosophical and theological perspectives which can serve as building blocks for the ethics of consumption. This makes the book of great interest to a broad readership of economists, social scientists and philosophers.

Abstract: 1. Science, society and Darwin’s idealization -- 2. Darwin’s society and science -- 3. Racism and its societal repercussions -- 4. Misogyny and its damaging legacy -- 5. Bringing reality to society and science.
Abstract: In this book Diogo, a renowned biologist and anthropologist, addresses a question that is critical for the understanding of science, beliefs, idolization, systemic racism and sexism, and our societies in general: why has Darwin been idolized in such a unique way, particularly by Western scholars? Diogo shows that many evolutionary 'facts' stated in Darwin's works, particularly about human evolution, are inaccurate constructions based on Victorian biases and stereotypes: non-Europeans are inferior, women have a lower intelligence than men, Victorian society was the pinnacle of evolution, and so on. Importantly, such inaccurate biased statements about our evolution are markedly in contrast with the mostly accurate, and often brilliant, ideas put forward by Darwin concerning non-human organisms. Importantly, it was precisely the combination of such brilliant ideas, the use of simplistic and sometimes exaggerated metaphors that were catchy and easily absorbed by the general public, and Darwin's intellectual conservatism and biased ideas about women and non-European peoples that led to Darwin's idolization, particularly by Western scientists, as well as to the darkest societal repercussions of his works. By portraying such biased ideas as “evolutionary facts”, Darwin provided easy ammunition for populist political leaders, authoritarians, colonialists, and white supremacists to 'scientifically' defend social hierarchies, sexism, racism, discrimination, oppression, and segregation. A typical argument used to defend Darwin from portraying such erroneous sexist and racist ideas as “facts” is that ‘back then’ everybody was racist and sexist. Diogo deconstructs this argument by providing enthralling case studies and travel descriptions by authors such as Wallace and Humboldt, who often praised the indigenous peoples that repulsed - and criticized the social hierarchies and Western imperialism that marveled - Darwin. The aim of this book is therefore not to 'cancel' Darwin or argue that he was always wrong: not at all, in general he was an extraordinary biologist, but was a much less successful anthropologist due in great part to his Victorian biases. Instead, the book discusses Darwin's writings, ideas, and their repercussions in a broader way, without taboos, omissions, idolization or demonization in order to show Darwin, and science in general, in all their complexity. This is because, if we fail to acknowledge and emphasize the biases, prejudices, inaccuracies, and abuses of our past, and merely continue to blindly idealize it, our kids will be condemned to undertake or suffer similar societal abuses in the future.

Abstract: Contemporary policymakers, as their predecessors, continue to view nomadic people as a weak minority, and their way of life and raising livestock as a backward and inefficient paradigm. Wherever nomads are not the dominant group, the trend to settle them continues even today as in the past. This book describes the changes forced upon formerly nomadic groups and how they still attempt to maintain their traditional, social, and cultural practices in their new settings. The book deals with the several modes of livelihood of these communities, including entrepreneurship, and demonstrates the impact of investment-oriented urbanization policies leading to eviction from ancestral lands, and hurdles for nomadic mobility, ultimately threatening their survival. The book illustrates how some groups like the Borana and the Maasai practice livelihood diversity and raise productive livestock, and how other groups migrate to urban centers in search of employment and remit money to family members left in the rural areas. The book aims to raise awareness among the research community, especially those who work on regional and demographic labor policies. It helps in understanding why society needs to help build business and livelihood strategies without harming the values of nomadic groups.

Abstract: This book investigates the entanglement of memory and morality in an extended case study of the memory policy of the European Commission between 2014 and 2020. The main empirical aim is to provide an understanding of how the European Commission, various non-governmental intermediary institutions (including the Memory Studies Association and Euroclio) and, in the end, participants in policy projects, attribute meaning to the past and connect that past with specific norms and values. The book queries how the European Commission turns more general cultural memories into concrete moral discourses in its memory policy; how these policies are institutionally operationalised; what draws these institutions to the European Commission’s memory policy; and what happens when individual citizens are exposed to the outcomes of those policy projects. Theoretically, Outsourcing the European Past integrates theories from cultural sociology, political science, cultural studies and sociolinguistics in an innovative theory of memory. Thomas Van de Putte, PhD, is Postdoctoral Researcher at King’s College London. His first book, Contemporary Auschwitz/Oswiecim: a synchronic, interactional approach to collective memory was published in 2021. He works on questions of cultural and collective Holocaust memory, combining perspectives from sociology, linguistics and cultural studies.

Abstract: This book critically examines existing organizational learning theories that often center on employees and adopt a neo-classical organizational view. In this book, organizational learning (OL) is conceptualized from a relational governance perspective. Departing from the relational economics approach, it describes organizations as dynamic nexuses of stakeholders' resources and interests, extending beyond conventional intra-organizational contexts to encompass an open systems view. By viewing organizations as independent entities, distinct from individual stakeholders, the author introduces the concept of transactions as the fundamental unit of analysis in organization theory. Stakeholders contribute diverse rationalities, and OL emerges as the process of relationalizing these rationalities, enabling multi-contextual transactions within organizations. This book sheds light on epistemological and ontological challenges in OL literature, such as the OL paradox and anthropomorphism. To address these issues, the author advocates a shift from methodological individualism to methodological relationism, wherein OL becomes a micro-meso-relational process involving both stakeholders and the organization as an entity. Combining conceptual insights with empirical evidence from a multinational company's case study, the book showcases how relational learning can be practically applied in organizations. The findings corroborate the conceptual framework, supporting the notion of organizations as resource-rich nexuses and learning as a comprehensive relational process involving both entities and stakeholders. This book offers an essential contribution to the field. It appeals to scholars and practitioners interested in organizational studies, corporate governance, and relational economics.

Abstract: This peer-reviewed book presents a comprehensive overview of the role space is playing in enabling Latin America to fulfil its developmental aspirations. Following on from the highly acclaimed Parts 1 to 4, it explains how space and its applications can be used to support the development of the full range and diversity of Latin America societies, while being driven by Latin American goals. The Latin American space sector is currently undergoing a phase of rapid and dynamic expansion, with new actors entering the field and with space applications increasingly being used to support the continent’s social, economic, and political development. All across Latin America, attention is shifting to space as a fundamental part of the continental development agenda, and the creation of a Latin American space agency is evidence of this. Additionally, while in recent years, significant advances in economic and social development have lifted many of Latin America’s people out of poverty, there is still much that needs to be done to fulfil the basic needs of the population and to afford them the dignity they deserve. To this end, space is already being employed in diverse fields of human endeavour to serve Latin America’s goals for its future, but there is still a need for further incorporation of space systems and data. This book will appeal to researchers, professionals and students in fields such as space studies, international relations, governance, and social and rural development.

Abstract: This volume examines the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the labor market and the business environment in the European Union (EU), with a specific focus on Romania, the least developed country in the EU. The book emphasizes the need to rethink recovery models and suggests a new normal based on the pillars of economic, climatic, and social resilience. Is proposed the redefinition the policies’ mix that will allow fundamental changes in development, focused also on social and societal profit, the redefinition of productivity and environmental performance of businesses, and the rebalancing of work and leisure life. The COVID-19 crisis not only accelerated the digital transformation of society but also reconfigured the coordinates of economic development by prioritizing sustainable development for all, based on green jobs as a starting point for business innovation and decent jobs for active social protection. Following this approach, the contributions discuss selected issues with importance to the development of society in the post-pandemic world. The book is of interest to students, scholars and researchers in economics, business, management and political science, as well as to policy makers and practitioners, for a better understanding of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the labor market and the business environment in European Union.

Abstract: Discussions of Coward’s achievement in the theatre between 1920 and 1966 have tended to stay with the colourful biography. The more analytical literary approach adopted here places Coward’s success in its wider theatrical context, making the connections with the work of other dramatists. He developed his technique according to what worked with theatre audiences. Taking up the well-made play, he brought in a more colloquial dialogue, explored, for instance, the morality and psychology of marriage and free love, and frequently exploited the dramatic possibilities of characters grouped into two camps. The book considers both the ‘pleasant’ and ‘unpleasant’ plays (to use the Shavian terms), and the episodic patriotic plays. It Includes Coward’s ambivalent approach to the ‘theatre of war’ in the 20th century. (123) Roger Kojecky: After an Oxford University English Faculty D. Managerial culture and labour relations at Pinewood -- 6. Cultural life at Pinewood -- 7. Anatomy of Pinewood in transition -- Bibliography.
Abstract: This open access book examines how Pinewood came to be Britain’s dominant film studio complex, focusing on key years following the Second World War. It presents a revisionist, micro history organized around key themes that are crucial to understanding the studios’ longevity during a particularly turbulent period. Pinewood’s survival at a time when other major film studios such as Denham closed, is explained. The book examines contemporary insights into how Pinewood’s technologies and practices compared to Hollywood’s when filmmaking methods were being scrutinized. Thirteen films produced in 1946-7 are analysed in detail, tracking how economic pressures engendered many creative techniques and innovative technologies. Prevailing cultures of management and labour organization are foregrounded, as well as insights into being a studio employee. These are vividly brought to life through an in-depth focus on the in-house studio magazine the Pinewood Merry-Go Round which provides rare details of sports and leisure activities organized at the studios. Abstract: This book presents an in-depth analysis of Howard Goldblatt’s translation of Mo Yan’s Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out (L&D). It explores how Goldblatt translates the original novel under the influence of three major manipulative powers: poetics, ideology and patronage, as well as his own subjectivity (translator subjectivity), to achieve his objectives as a literary translator. The author analyses both the translation and its paratext to gain a more complete understanding of Goldblatt’s accomplishments, and examines how Goldblatt rewrites the original text under the influence of various patronage factors, such as the original author, publisher, editor, market expectancy, literary collaborator, and the target reader. This book provides a comprehensive picture of the production, reception and dissemination of Goldblatt’s translation, exposing the motivations behind his translation in full measure, and it will be of interest to students and scholars of Translation Studies, Comparative Literature and Literary Studies, and Chinese Culture and Literature. Abstract: This volume explores the state of literary theory today, decades after the repeatedly proclaimed end of theory. It builds on the idea that theory is historically constituted as it is “always becoming something else” as Leslie Fiedler claimed in the 1950s, arguing that the historical constitution of theory relies on theory’s procedural nature. In order to assess theory’s procedural challenge to the fundamental notions that all the disciplines within an episteme have brought to the fore, it addresses these questions: What are the procedures theory has relied on? Are they a secret to its resistance, or is resistance its primary procedure? And if so, a resistance to what? Secondly, if resistance were theory’s principal vehicle, at which point does resistance, conceptualized only procedurally (as resisting something, questioning anything, criticizing whatever), display hallmarks of a disciplinary closure that must call for new resistances, and perhaps for a fundamentally another kind? The book turns to what theory does in order to avoid a partial answer to what theory is. Abstract: This book contains selected papers from the 12th International Conference on Extreme Learning Machines 2022. Extreme learning machines (ELMs) continue to be an important complement to the many deep learning models you can find in the machine learning domain. ELM is fast and therefore suitable for many applications (not only in edge computing), and therefore there is a need to gather examples of possible applications. These proceedings, for the ELM 2022 conference, cover several application areas with relevant topics, where ELM can be used and has been used with great success. Here you will find several new areas (gaming, for instance) as well as improved concepts for existing application areas (signature forgery, for instance), where ELM has been implemented. In addition, some method improvements are also covered in this book, more specifically on the topic of 2nd-order Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs).

Abstract: This book discusses the role played by powerful global institutions such as the IMF, the World Bank, the World Trade Organisation, multinational corporations, and the international credit rating agencies in keeping Africa marginalised in the world economy. The book focuses on the intrusive roles of these institutions as enablers and beneficiaries of capital outflows and financial subordination in Africa. Diverging from the official narrative that touts China and the other emerging economies as global reformers that are poised to partner Africa in its fight against financial subjugation, the book instead argues that, like the Western powers, the emerging economies are benefiting prodigiously from a rigged global financial system that keeps Africa as a net creditor to the rest of the world. The book draws its theoretical framework from the repressed heterodox theories including dependency, core-periphery, world systems and Marxist theories as well as the decolonial approach. It concludes with a call for a decolonial African agency that should champion an epistemic rebellion against the neo-liberal and neo-classic economic traditions that have been historically deployed to justify Africa’s subordinated position in the global economic governance. This book comes at moment in time when Africa is ready to become a Rule Maker not a Rule Taker. The analysis Dr. Moyo presents having been in the front line of public policy and international negotiations demonstrate the need for Africa to re-write the rules to foster our own Transformation. Abstract: This book focuses on the formation of human social consciousness and develops a naturalist approach to social normativity. Beginning from Marx's uncompleted concept of social consciousness, the book retrospects the studies about collective intentionality in the area of philosophy of mind and social ontology. Specifically, a reinterpretation of social consciousness with respect to collective intentionality can offer us a new, naturalistic approach to the social formation and normativity. According to the naturalistic approach, we can discern the inner structure of social consciousness as a systematic pattern of Intentionality. Social consciousness involves three levels of development: subjective, objective and absolute. With this new pattern of social consciousness, the “naturalism” of the young Karl Marx can be revived. And by grasping the most essential ability of human Intentionality as the source of social formation, it also makes an interdisciplinary study of social philosophy and philosophy of mind possible. Abstract: 1. Introduction -- 2. Buddhist Advocacy and Activism Research -- 3. Historical Developments of Buddhist Advocacy and Activism in Siam and Modern Thailand -- 4. Identification and Humanizing and Dehumanizing Rhetoric -- 5. A Buddhist Rhetoric of Dignity and Degradation -- 6. A Buddhist Rhetoric of Duty: Justifying Advocacy and Activism -- 7. Conclusion.
Abstract: This book studies Buddhist public advocacy and activism in Thailand—a movement often broadly called socially engaged Buddhism—from the perspective of rhetorical studies, specifically, on humanizing and dehumanizing communication practices. In modern Thailand and historical Siam, Buddhism has been integral to the social change processes shaping civil society and an emerging democracy. This study examined two problems: How do contemporary Buddhists in Thailand use rhetorical practice to influence the way the issues they work on are understood, and how do these Buddhists justify their advocacy and activism in rhetorical practice? To the first, a rhetoric of dignity, or humanization, was the central answer. To the second, a rhetoric of duty was the central answer. For researchers in Southeast Asian Studies, Thai Studies, and Buddhist Studies, this book offers a fresh perspective on socially engaged Buddhism through the lens of the communication discipline. For researchers in Psychology and Communication, it sheds light on the understudied practices of humanizing communication. The bulk of the current research is focused on its opposite—dehumanization—and most of this literature is in the field of psychology even though humanization and dehumanization are fundamentally and ontologically communication phenomena. For researchers within the field of Communication and Rhetorical Studies, this book advances innovations in the emerging practices of rhetorical field methods by applying rhetorical criticism to interview data in a new way and provides a non-western perspective on communication and rhetorical theory for which there has been continual calls. Craig M. Pinkerton (Ph.D., Ohio University) is Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Denison University. He is an educator and researcher of communication with an emphasis in rhetoric, public culture, and qualitative methods combined with interdisciplinary inquiry in Southeast Asian Studies and Buddhist Studies. He has won over fifteen academic awards and honors, including the prestigious Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) for the study of Thai language. Since 2007, he has taught over 20 courses on a wide variety of subjects on communication, including public speaking and presentation communication, argumentation, rhetoric, public advocacy and activism, marketing and public relations, organizational development, interpersonal conflict management, and the dark side of media. From 2011 to 2015, he lived in Thailand teaching communication and researching Buddhist public advocacy and activism.

Abstract: This book examines the dissemination, adaptation, and application of classical economic ideas within the Hispanic world through the life of José Joaquín de Mora. Focusing on the decades surrounding the creation of the Latin American republics, it highlights how ideas from the classical political economy, including liberalism and free trade, were pioneered in the work of Mora and disseminated across the Spanish speaking world. Particular attention is given to the influence of Mora in Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Bolivia and how he helped shape their economic development models and political environments. This book examines the essential role José Joaquín de Mora played in the ideological and political modernisation of Latin America. It will be of interest to students and researchers interested in the history of economic thought and the political economy. Jesús Astigarraga is Professor of Economics at the University of Zaragoza. Abstract: This Open Access book examines the long economic boom experienced in Ireland between the late 1980s and 2007, analysing why this boom occurred. The book situates Ireland as a relative latecomer to economic development, with specific challenges and advantages inherent to this position. It discusses the risks involved in remaining reliant on foreign companies, exploring how in Ireland’s case the rapidly growing economy required active, interventionist and imaginative policy measures rather than relying primarily on free market forces. The book also offers an estimation of the value of the net foreign earnings associated with different categories of exports after deducting the profit outflows and payments for imported inputs, revealing a number of findings about the importance of Irish indigenous companies and services during this time. It shows that Irish indigenous companies, assisted by industrial policy measures, played a significant part, as did the services sector, alongside the more visible and widely recognised role of foreign multinationals in high-tech manufacturing. Offering fresh insights and analyses more than 15 years after the long boom ended at the precipice of the global financial crisis, this book will be a useful resource for economic historians, scholars of political economy and macroeconomic policy, as well as those interested in modern Irish history more broadly. Abstract: The book sets an ambitious goal. It devises a new account of scientific methodology that makes it possible to explain how scientists manage, at least occasionally, to find true models of reality. The new methods may be contrasted with all those currently available that employ “coherence theories” of knowledge. Under this designation are grouped positions that can seem very different (such as those of Poincaré, Duhem, Popper, Hempel, Quine, Kuhn, and Feyerabend) but are united by the idea that the most general statements of science are merely hypotheses. They may be conjectures, opinions, conventions, posits, paradigms, or even myths. The most we can claim to know from such generalities is that they are internally consistent and coherent with empirical data. Consistency is insufficient to establish the truth of a conceptual system because many different systems, perhaps an infinite number, can be logically consistent and cohere with recorded data. Such is the well-known problem of the empirical under-determination of theories. Francis Bacon’s Skeptical Recipes for New Knowledge suggests a new methodology that solves this fundamental problem of knowledge. Abstract: This volume approaches the relationship between European public sphere and political communication in the framework of establishing populism and social media. The empirical analysis focuses on the comparison between different EU countries during the 2019 EP elections campaign. The data for the analysis was collected real time from Twitter in the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Italy, Spain, Ireland and the UK. during a month period and are analyzed with both computerized quantitative and manual qualitative methods. The book introduces a new perspective in conceptualizing populism in comparative analysis, in which populism is understood rather as an antagonist logic of political identity formation than pre-defined political ideologies, movements or party cleavages. We approach implications of populist construction of ‘us’ and ‘not us’ in national contexts of 2019 EP election campaigns to find out the relationality between different political actors and parties. A special attention is paid to national/transnational and European/Eurosceptic tendencies in campaign rhetoric. By using a unique idea of ‘hashtag publics’ we approach the common Twitter discussions around the elections and ask: what particular topics and themes did different political actors distribute over Twitter during the 2019 EP elections, how were various topics and actors linked to each other, and how were campaign agendas and actors linked to populism? Abstract: This book addresses the relationship between religion, climate change, and food security in Africa. Contributors to this volume interrogate how and to what extent religion in Africa serves as a resource (or confounding factor) in responding to Sustainable Development Goals 13 (action on climate change) and 2 (achieve Zero Hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture). Approaching the theme from diverse disciplinary and methodological angles, contributors probe the potential role of religion in Africa to accelerate the achievement of these two SDGs, especially the role of religion with regard to food availability, food accessibility, food utilization, and food systems stability. Abstract: Consumption and Certainty -- Consumption and Uncertainty in Discrete-time -- Consumption and Portfolio Rules -- Consumption and Economic Growth -- Consumption and Uncertainty in Continuous Time.
Abstract: This textbook offers a compact, yet formal, synthesis of the broad field of consumption theory. Written in a coherent and accessible way, this book introduces graduate and postgraduate students to dynamic optimization applied to consumption under certainty and uncertainty, in discrete and continuous time. Delving into deterministic and stochastic models, including the use of Brownian motions, the book offers a deeper understanding of consumption decisions and their impact on asset pricing and investment in partial and general equilibrium. This book compiles lecture notes from advanced courses in micro- and macroeconomics, ensuring a self-contained introduction to the subject. Balancing simplicity with analytical rigor, the book equips readers with essential methodological tools for advanced research in economics. With empirical evidence and exercises integrated throughout, this textbook stands as the go-to resource for scholars and students alike, fostering further theoretical explorations in the field. Basic knowledge of economics, mathematics, and econometrics is recommended for a comprehensive understanding.

Abstract: Why do financial crises occur under some IMF programs? When does state-perpetrated repression increase in the aftermath of such financial crises? Mukherjee and Yadav provide a compelling theoretical answer to these crucial questions, moving beyond earlier work to examine when a financial crisis occurs in states assisted by the IMF and how this leads to repression of human rights. They analyze a global sample of developing states and carefully examine the Brazil, India, and Turkey cases to evaluate their claims. The IMF, Financial Crisis and Repression of Human Rights is an important book that should be widely read by scholars and policy practitioners. -Quan Li, Professor of Political Science, The Bush School of Government & Public Service,Texas A&M University This book seeks to answer a number of key questions about the relationship between the IMF, developing states and the impact of financial crises on human rights abuses, including: Why do some but not other IMF-assisted developing states experience the joint outbreak of currency and sudden reversal crises under the Fund’s program?; What are some of the short-term political ramifications of such crises?; Why do human rights violation by governments increase sharply in the wake of twin currency and sudden reversal crisis in some but not all crisis-affected countries? Bumba Mukherjee is Professor of the Department of Political Science at Penn State University, United States. Abstract: “This timely and highly original book mercilessly dissects the sources of China’s impending ‘imperial decline’. Its unique insights rest equally on western and Chinese scholarship and on a large measure of inside knowledge. It offers a trenchant comparative analysis of the evolution of China’s ‘decrepit Leninist Leviathan’ from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping. And its conclusion that the economic illiteracy and personal venality of the Communist leadership has locked China into dependent development and helped summon up the ‘new Cold War’ is brilliantly provocative.” – MacGregor Knox, Stevenson Professor of International History emeritus, The London School of Economics and Political Science “Jianyong Yue’s book provides a freshening and insightful perspective on China’s development over the past several decades. It is very impressive in its historical depth, conceptual power, and analytical rigor; its explanation of China’s economic ‘successes’ and their sociopolitical quintessence hits the nail on the head.” – Guoguang Wu, Senior Research Scholar at Stanford University’s Center on China’s Economy and Institutions This book offers a multidisciplinary redefinition of China's model of crony comprador capitalism. The author argues that this model emerged through the fusion of market Leninism and global capitalism in the early 1990s within the post-Cold War and post-Communist global context. While driving robust export-led growth, this approach hindered China's structural transformation and limited its ascent, ironically leading to the regime's accelerating totalitarian turn and the onset of a new Cold War. In line with the call for ‘Capitalism 3.0,’ the book advocates Western decoupling from China and promoting the country's transition to a democratic developmental state, fostering a safer world for democracy over autocracy. It will be of interest to academics and policy-makers in a wide range of fields, including political economy, political studies, international relations, and economic history. Jianyong Yue is a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics and previously taught Chinese politics and development at LSE and King’s College London. He published China’s Rise in the Age of Globalization: Myth or Reality? (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018).

Abstract: This is the second volume of a two-part series on Concordian economics, an innovative paradigm that builds upon the Aristotelian-Aquinian tradition of economic justice. Having introduced Concordian economics in the first volume as a compelling research paradigm that addresses the limitations of mainstream economics, this second installment takes the exploration further by examining its real-world applications in four policy areas. With a focus on industrial organization, labor markets, monetary, and fiscal policy, the author advocates for a transformative approach to economic rights and responsibilities. By promoting a moral economy, this book offers a substitute to the Pac-Man approach to industrial organization. The book challenges traditional notions by discussing the ownership rights concerning larger corporations and offering visionary solutions, in the steps of Louis O, Kelso, empowering workers and employees to participate in the ownership of robots and artificial intelligence. The Fed has given a nod of approval to the creation of a new Concordian monetary system. Following the advice of eight Nobel Laureates in economics, the proposed fiscal reforms emphasize taxing only the value of land and natural resources, ushering in a society where the use of our natural resources and machines serves the common good, economic freedom thrives, and forced income redistribution becomes obsolete. This book illustrates a vivid vision of a world founded on universal economic rights and responsibilities, offering fresh perspectives on a more just and sustainable future. It appeals to scholars and students of economics and related fields, as well as anyone interested in a free but just economic system.

Abstract: Networks of today are going through a rapid evolution and there are many emerging areas of information networking and their applications. Heterogeneous networking supported by recent technological advances in low power wireless communications along with silicon integration of various functionalities such as sensing, communications, intelligence, and actuations are emerging as a critically important disruptive computer class based on a new platform, networking structure and interface that enable novel, low-cost and high-volume applications. Several of such applications have been difficult to realize because of many interconnection problems. To fulfill their large range of applications different kinds of networks need to collaborate and wired and next generation wireless systems should be integrated in order to develop high performance computing solutions to problems arising from the complexities of these networks. This book covers the theory, design and applications of computer networks, distributed computing, and information systems. The aim of the book “Advanced Information Networking and Applications” is to provide latest research findings, innovative research results, methods and development techniques from both theoretical and practical perspectives related to the emerging areas of information networking and applications.

Abstract: This book explores the current state of healthcare practice and provides a roadmap for harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and other modern cognitive technologies for neurogenerative diseases. The main goal of this book is to look at how these techniques can be used to classify patients with neurodegenerative diseases by extracting data from multiple modalities. It demonstrates that the growing development of computer-aided diagnosis systems has a lot of potential to help with the diagnostic process. It offers an analysis of the prospective and perils in implementing such state of the art. Progressive brain disorders with a high prevalence in the general population include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia, Huntington's disease, and motor neuron disease. Worldwide, it is estimated that 33 million people have Alzheimer's disease, and 10 million people have Parkinson's disease. The global health economy is significantly impacted by these disorders, which affect both the patient and the caregivers. Various diagnostic techniques are used for differential diagnoses, such as brain imaging, EEG analysis, molecular analysis, and cognitive, psychological, and physical examination. The book aims to develop effective treatments, enhance patient quality of life, and extend life expectancy. It focuses on novel artificial intelligence approaches to clarify the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders and provide early diagnosis. The authors compile recent developments based on machine learning and deep learning techniques to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases using imaging, genetic, and clinical data. The authors support initiatives and methods that aim to improve the application of algorithms in diagnostic practice.

Abstract: This book examines how jihadist groups in sub-Saharan Africa have managed to advance their extremist agenda and recruit new followers thanks to digital media fueled by the information revolution since the dawn of the 21st century. This examination is based on a mixture of historical accounts, contemporary descriptions, case studies, theoretical applications, and an in-depth applied study (in the late chapters of the manuscript). An important conclusion is that the progress of jihadism in sub-Saharan Africa has been commensurate with the development and availability of digital media. This book breaks new ground in three ways. It is the first major academic work to devote most of its content exclusively to the use of digital media by jihadist groups in that region. Examples of jihadist digital media include social networking sites, online instructional videos, propaganda videos, and online jihadist magazines―among others. Secondly, it provides detailed case studies of both well-knownAfrican groups (e.g., Al-Shabaab, Boko Haram) and lesser-known ones― e.g., the Allied Democratic Forces in the Congo (which have, nevertheless, wreaked so much damage). Lastly, it is the first book to include an in-depth thematic analysis of online jihadist magazines―Inspire, Dabiq, Rumiyah, and Gaidi Mtaani―on their content dedicated to sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract: This book explores the nature-inspired and place-based vlogging activities of five young women who have become global icons in the last five years, and whose digital projects are a form of ‘nature life writing’ in the Anthropocene. Li Ziqi, Dianxi Xiaoge, Jonna Jinton, Annabel Margaret and Paola Merrill draw on their culture and use technological equipment and social media (especially YouTube) to build dynamic narratives about living in the countryside. Through their online platform they show unique, picturesque footage of their daily routines and rural environments, and present the ways in which they nurture connections between people in the community and animals and landscapes. The study shows how, paradoxically, their digital life writing projects attempt to resist the attention economy but at the same time use strategies to sustain it. Through the various lenses of ecobiography, cultural ecology, digital archiving, ecospirituality, phytography, and ethological poetics, this book also foregrounds the significance of plant life and landscapes – they are reminders of how human lives are inextricably entangled with traditional values and the natural world. Alberta Natasia Adji is a contemporary author and researcher in women’s life narratives. She completed her PhD on auto/biographical fiction at Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia, in 2023. Her autobiographical project focuses on family history of Chinese Indonesians from 1959 to 2014. Adji was awarded the 2023 School of Arts and Humanities Research Medal by ECU for the quality of her doctoral research thesis. Before coming to Australia, she has published two novels in Indonesian language, Youth Adagio (2013) and Dante: The Faery and the Wizard (2014). Since then, she has continued publishing her short fiction works in New Writing, Meniscus, and TEXT as well as refereed articles in academic journals.

Abstract: Chapter 1. Introduction -- Chapter 2. Deindustrialisation in the New Millennium -- Chapter 3. Empirical Analysis of Global Value Chains -- Chapter 4. Regionalisation of Global Value Chains in Manufacturing -- Chapter 5. Deindustrialisation Over Time -- Chapter 6. Conclusion.
Abstract: This book analyses the possible regionalization of global value chains, particularly in manufacturing. Amidst calls for an industrial renaissance in Europe and a resurgence of manufacturing jobs in the United States, the dynamics of global value chains have been reshaped by global pandemics, geopolitical tensions, and increased automation. Employing a multi-regional input–output model, the book scrutinizes the decline in offshoring afer the mid-2010s. It sheds light on regionalization as a pivotal force redefining global markets, and focuses on Europe and North America, revealing the strengthening of regional ties. Discussing future challenges, the book will appeal to scholars, students, and researchers, as well as practitioners and policy-makers interested in a better understanding of (de)globalization nuances connected to the evolving role of manufacturing in global value chains.

Abstract: This book develops a critique of the equality paradigms and principles to be found in the majority of today’s legal orders. It accompanies the reader taking her/him/x from a critique of non-discrimination and equality to the ‘opposite’ end of the spectrum, that is, to collective rights, collectivization processes and a manifestation of recognition that is based on difference. This interdisciplinary, theoretical journey explores a multiplicity of (legal) orders in terms of how they provide spaces of articulation for ‘difference’. The book draws, emblematically, on the rights of indigenous peoples as well as recognized and unrecognized cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities. The book thereby builds on legal and political theory, which ultimately proves essential given the dedicated objective of the book, that is, to introduce a variety of recognition principles and what the author terms ‘scales of collectivization’, which facilitate a better understanding of collective rights and further ways to capture, define and ultimately measure these rights.

Abstract: 1. Introduction -- 2. Consuming Music -- 3. Basic Producer Theory -- 4. The Music Industry Disrupted: The COVID Era -- 5. The Global Marketplace for Music -- 6. Conclusion.
Abstract: This book uses economic theory to explain how consumers and producers have responded to major changes in the music industry. Byun examines the important role of technology in changing its structure, particularly as new methods of creating and accessing music prove to be a double-edged sword for creators and producers. This second edition includes new information about concert attendance and live performance in the COVID era and what followed, as well as the resultant economic impacts on the industry. Throughout the book, Byun questions how the business of music affects creativity and the extent to which this impacts the creative output of the individual artist. Chapters also address copyright enforcement and online piracy. This is an approachable resource for economists interested in the music industry as well as business and music majors studying the ways in which technology can impact a creative process. Christie Byun is Associate Professor of Economics at Wabash College in the USA. She teaches courses on statistics, econometrics, entrepreneurship, environmental economics, and the fashion industry. Byun has done extensive research on the changes in the music industry using applied economic theory.

Abstract: This book investigates the problematisation in Adam Smith's moral philosophy of a classical question: what makes us human beings from a moral standpoint? To do this, Riccardo Bonfiglioli explores the relationship between the concepts of ‘human nature’, ‘mind’ and ‘the self’ in order to reconstruct Smith’s theory of subjectivity. After providing a systematic reconstruction of Adam Smith’s conceptions of ‘human nature’ , ‘mind’ and ‘the self’ – exploring some aspects of Smith’s philosophy (nature, philosophy of history, sympathy and imagination) and their empirical expressions (education, conduct and character) – Bonfiglioli argues that, in Adam Smith’s work, the meaning of ‘moral human beings’ would depend on the human being’s effort to live in harmony with oneself and the others. According to Bonfiglioli, in Smith’s moral theory, this ‘harmony with oneself and the others’ would be achieved in relation to a certain kind of awareness that can be possible when human beings try to judge the conduct and try to act according to the impartial spectator. Specifically, this impartial spectator is reinterpreted by the author in the light of the concept of immediacy. Riccardo Bonfiglioli is academic tutor and subject expert at the University of Bologna. He is associate member of the Walras-Pareto Centre (University of Lausanne), dynamic psychology researcher and MBSR instructor (Aim Milan).

Abstract: Chapter 1- From Malandros to Agregados:the Precarious Labourer and the Novel Form in 19th Century Brazil -- Chapter 2-Sex Work in Caribbean Fiction -- Chapter 3 Economic Informality in South African Fiction -- Chapter 4 -(In) formal structure in Wizard of the Crow -- Chapter 5-Precarious Core.
Abstract: This book analyses the impact of economic informality on the novel form across the modern world-system, looking specifically at works by Antonio de Almeida, Machado de Assis, Dany Laferrière, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Nadine Gordimer, and Masande Ntshanga. It sees the representation of informal economies as a structural homology of world-literature. In chapters on the figure of the agregado in the nineteenth-century Brazilian novel; sex work in Haitian fiction; the politics of the informal economy in the post-apartheid South African novel; and Ngugi’s representation African occult economies, Josh Jewell explores the relationship between the rise of improvised economic activity—and its consolidation under neoliberalism in postcolonial nations—and literary form. He shows how informal economies can be grasped as locations of strategy and improvisation whose subjects must shift constantly between officialdom and underground networks; between the realms of the licit and illicit. This produces highly heterogenous narratives oscillating between different tones and registers (unserious and tragic), social spaces (working-class and elite), and conceptions of reality. By comparing the various situated aesthetics of informality, this book instrumentalises the Warwick Research Collective’s compelling but nebulous idea of a world-literature that “variously registers” a “singular modernity”. Josh Jewell is a resident scholar in the Humanities Institute at University College Dublin, Ireland. His research analyses the relationship between labour and literary form in world-literature. His current postdoctoral research project focuses on representations of labour which falls outside of direct market mediation--such as domestic labour and peasant agriculture--in South Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, and the European periphery.

Abstract: The book provides a discursive reflection on the current challenges facing administrative law, based on a key idea: the defence of the liberal model of society. The author describes the content of her book as a turning point on the traditional standards of the rule of law and the way it impacts on the administrative state and administrative law. Considering the current use (and abuse) of emergency law by governments – based on economic crisis, environmental crisis, pandemic, and the economic situation caused by the Ukraine war – she devises a different balance or equilibrium on the usual separation of powers. Many reasons contribute to this turning point: i) the weaknesses of an open society easily swayed by social networks; ii) social “tribalism” replaces common good and general interest; iii) social tribalism leads to illiberal society, which causes illiberal democracies; iv) illiberal democracies lead to ungovernability which reinforces the role of the government, the emergency law, and some de facto measures. The author looks at many recent decisions from the ECJ and the ECHR and some constitutional and administrative courts, which extends the interest of this work to a wide range of professionals, from scholars to students, from judges to lawyers, filling the gap from an administrative law perspective of the current issues.

Abstract: The main target of this book is to present a new concept of Ulam-type stability, i.e., multi-stability, through the classical, well-known special functions and to obtain the best approximation error estimates by a different concept of perturbation stability including fuzzy approaches for uncertainty considerations. This stability allows us to obtain diverse approximations depending on various special functions that are initially chosen and to evaluate maximal stability and minimal error which enable us to obtain a unique optimal solution of functional equations, inequalities, and fractional equations. Stability analysis in the sense of the Ulam and its different kinds has received considerable attention from the researchers. However, how to effectively generalize the Ulam stability problems and to evaluate optimized controllability and stability are new issues. The multi-stability not only covers the previous concepts but also considers the optimization of the problem and provides a comprehensive discussion of optimizing the different types of the Ulam stabilities of mathematical models used in the natural sciences and engineering disciplines with fuzzy attitudes. Besides, this book also deals with nonlinear differential equations with various boundary conditions or initial value problems, based on the matrix Mittag-Leffler function, fixed point theory, as well as Babenko's approach to study uniqueness and existence of solutions. In general, the benefits for the readers can be concluded as follows: 1. Evaluates maximal stability with minimal error to get a unique optimal solution. 2. Discusses an optimal method of the alternative to study existence, uniqueness, and different types of Ulam stabilities under special consideration of the fuzzy approaches. 3. Delves into the new study of boundary value problems of fractional integro-differential equations with integral boundary conditions and variable coefficients.

Abstract: The book is divided into sections according to the content of the chapters. The first section covers AI concepts with NP and financial issues. The second section covers AI techniques in relation to Fintech issues. The remaining sections are implementation and analysis. As science and technology development and algorithms are widely used in various fields, their influence and development have increased efficiency and productivity. The introduction of algorithms in the financial field has not been an exception to this. In recent years, the growth and development of the financial system have been in sync with the growth of technology. Fintechs were born at the intersection of these two sectors. What happens through the application of computer knowledge in the financial field, or the examination of the efficiency and effectiveness of their use and the interaction and combination of these two fields has been written very infrequently in the majority of books. In Fintech, there are problems that researchers focus on such as customer support, portfolio management, trading algorithms, fraud detection, credit risk assessment, insurance, and wealth management. The mentioned problems are complex and are mapped to NP problems in the field of artificial intelligence. In the last two decades, optimization algorithms, neural networks, and deep learning have been widely applied in many scientific and engineering fields to solve the mentioned problems. The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with the most used artificial intelligence methods for scientific and engineering problems. This book is used by students, scientists, and practitioners in various fields. The chapters are self-explanatory, and the reader can read each one separately. They describe the algorithm used, the chosen problem, and the implementation. In addition, practical examples, comparisons, and experimental results are presented.

Abstract: This book presents an in-depth exploration of the intricate negotiations of married Muslim women within Cape Town’s Muslim communities, navigating the complexities of legal pluralism governed by Muslim Personal Law (MPL). Spanning historical epochs from colonialism to the democratic era, it argues that MPL’s informal status perpetuates patriarchal norms, especially in the domain of marriage. It critically examines the consequences of the non-recognition of Muslim marriages within the civil legal framework and underscores the ambiguous intersections of MPL with broader legal systems, which leaves women in a precarious legal state overshadowed by religious doctrines. Adopting a gender perspective and an interdisciplinary approach that combines political science, sociology, and the law, the book reveals the historical roots of legal pluralism, while also shedding light on the political strategies that have perpetuated gender-stratified citizenship. Despite all the democratic promises, legal pluralism persists, contributing to gender disparities, and the book critically examines the government’s reluctance to address the marginalisation of Muslim women, especially through the lens of the proposed Muslim Marriages Bill (MMB). This book is essential reading for scholars in the fields of law, sociology, and gender studies, offering critical insights into the intersections of legal systems, religion, and gender dynamics within Muslim communities in Cape Town.

Abstract: Rationality has been philosophers’ concern stretching back to ancient times. But just what is rationality? In trying to answer this question, rationality is found to be more complex than supposed. This book investigates this supposition and thereby aspires to bring together the facets of the peculiar phenomenon that is rationality. Rationality is shown to be both more complex than presumed and yet more accessible than many may have feared. One argument concedes the common assumption that those interested in rationality need only rely on intuitions about this phenomenon. Yet, even moderate research reveals the concept’s profound fuzziness. This book aims to set forth a theory, explanation, and unification of the kindred and disparate understandings of this elusive concept, rationality. Lantz Fleming Miller, a visiting professor of philosophy at Ashoka University in India, focuses on moral, social, and political philosophy, especially pertaining to technological developments. He has published dozens of articles on these subjects in prominent journals. He has also taught philosophy at the University of Twente, Netherlands, and institutes in Paris and New York.

Abstract: Chapter 1- Sacrifice, Consciousness, and Narrative Pronoun Shifts -- Chapter 2- May Sinclair and Two Sides of Sacrifice -- Chapter 3 - From Ritual to Narrative in Mary Butts -- Chapter 4 - Mending a Broken Duality in H. D. (Hilda Doolittle).
Abstract: This book explores sacrifice as a narrative theme and a stylistic strategy in works by May Sinclair, Mary Butts and H. D. It argues that the modernist experiment with pronoun use informs the treatment of acts of sacrifice in the texts, understood both as acts of self-renunciation and as ritual performance. It also suggests that sacrifice, if the conditions are right, can serve as the structure upon which a cohesive community might be built. The book offers in-depth analyses of the three authors and their works, deftly dissecting the modernist narrative experiment to show that it was by no means limited — it was a means by which to approach a wide range of stories and materials. Sanna Melin Schyllert is Visiting Lecturer at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3, France, having previously held posts at Lund University, the University of Westminster, and University College London. Her publications include ‘Sacrifice, Pronoun Shifts and the Creation of Self in H. D.’s Prose Works’ in The Space Between Journal (2019) and ‘Sacrifice, Community and Narrative Power in Mary Butts’s Taverner Novels’ in The Journal of Religious History, Literature and Culture (2016).

George Eliot’s Middlemarch and the Question of Marriage as Catalyst or Cure -- 4. Hysterical Degeneration and The New Woman in Thomas Hardy’s The Woodlanders -- Epilogue.
Abstract: Narratives of Women’s Health and Hysteria in the Nineteenth-Century Novel looks extensively at hysteria discourse through medical and sociological texts and examines how this body of work intersects with important cultural debates to define women’s social, physical, and mental health. The book sketches out prominent shifts in cultural reactions to the idea of diffused agency and the prized model of the interiorized, individual person capable of self will and governance. Melissa Rampelli takes up the work of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy, showing how the authors play with and manipulate stock literary figures to contribute to this dialogue about the causes and cures of women’s hysterical distress.

Abstract: This book is considered as a monograph but also as a potential textbook for graduate students, focusing on the application of FCMs for modelling and analysing the behaviour of multicomponent systems. In the last two decades, no monograph or textbook has been published on the topic Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM), so this new book is definitely filling a gap in the literature of computational intelligence. The book is built up didactically, the novel results in the field being presented in the way of starting with two real-life case studies, one in the area of waste management, while the other one in modelling bank management systems. In both cases, the book starts with explaining the applied problem and then presenting how the model construction is done and what problems emerge when attempts are made for applying directly earlier results on FCM modelling. In the first case study, the problem of the oversimplification leads to inadequacy of the model, and then it is shown how new, much finer models can be built up based on expert domain knowledge. Then, the new problem of losing transparency and interpretability emerges, and as a solution, a new algorithm family is proposed that reduces FCMs to fewer components, while preserving the essential characteristics of the original model. The second case study raises the problems of stability and sensitivity of FCMs, especially, considering that expert knowledge is often uncertain and subjective. The new results summarised in the book target the questions of how to ascertain whether an FCM is converging to one or several fixed point attractors, whether there is a bifurcation when parameters are changing, etc. Both problems deal with the ultimate question whether the system modelled is stable and sustainable.

Abstract: Zimdancehall is a musical movement in Zimbabwe that has grown significantly since 2010. The Zimdancehall Revolution brings together critical essays on various aspects of Zimdancehall culture by scholars from diverse disciplines. Traditionally, music critics and senior academics have not taken Zimdancehall seriously, regarding it as vulgar, transient, bubble gum, lacking depth, and in short, a fad. There were also allegations that the lyrics influenced factionalism, incited violence and glorified drug use and unbridled promiscuity among the youth. This book affords this movement the protracted intellectual engagement that it deserves and argues that Zimdancehall is more than just a musical genre but an everyday culture, a way of life. The genre’s close association with the ghetto is telling and enables critics to look at it as a social movement, a revolution, or a raw, petulant and raging disturbance of peace by those who live their lives on the margins. It is, thus, a violent irruption onto the public space by marginalised young people whose presence as artistes creating art from the margins, simultaneously as victims and agents, circulating in a geography that escapes the limits of nationalist ideological and physical territory, in a way subverts communitarian prescriptions and allows young people entry into the world, albeit in a painful, tumultuous and violent way. The essays range from the mapping of the genre’s historical development to theoretical interventions in understanding the genre and its relationship with various aspects of the Zimbabwean society like politics, gender, religion, language, dance, cultural values and other genres.

Abstract: This book describes how statements made by non-state actors affect the scope of an individual's criminal responsibility and how they should be taken into account by domestic criminal courts. Sentencing is only possible on the basis and within the limits of the law. In the 21st century, this law increasingly means regulations formulated by various non-state actors: international organisations, human rights tribunals or statutory bodies. The content of these regulations does not only refer to states, but often has a direct impact on the legal situation of individuals. Two worlds collide here. Strict criminal law is influenced by fluid regulations issued by entities that have not been empowered to exercise the right to punish. The book presents an interpretative method to support the court's inference in the cases outlined above, based on the using the concept of two interrelated norms: the norm of the individual and the norm of the court.

Abstract: In this textbook readers will acquire knowledge of problem-solving and learning to enhance both efficiency and the experience of service users in rapidly changing service environments, that can create new service models. Emphasizing that, above all else, individuals are at the centre of services, the book goes deeply into the nature of public services and their logic-of-practice. By applying learning and problem-solving approaches, the reader gains practical capabilities in addition to an appreciation of the latest research literature. Following a multidisciplinary, international approach, the book suggests a new typology of problem-framing and presents many examples of how new service solutions can be created in any public service context. The book offers a conceptual toolkit to understand and analyse dynamically changing services and the application of new technologies. Topics covered include pressing issues surrounding public services, such as e-technology, digitalisation, e-services, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurialism, sustainability, climate, inequality, developing economies, and smart cities. Chapters follow a similar structure: issue, problems, what we know, learning framework, worked example, theory and practice conclusions, as well as teacher and learner notes. Addressing advanced undergraduate and graduate students of public administration, public management, political science, sociology, computer science, and information systems, the book will also be a valuable resource for practitioners, i.e. experts and managers in public organizations, professionals in organizations working at the business and public sectors, consultants, and IT suppliers.
