    Abstract: After West African migrants arrived in France in the 1960s, the authorities opened residences for them known as "foyers." Initially intended to contain the West African population, these hostels for single men fostered the emergence of Black communities in the heart of Paris and other cities. More recently, however, a nationwide renovation program sought to replace the collective living arrangements of foyers with more individualized spaces by constructing new buildings or drastically reshaping existing ones-and casting the West African presence as a threat to French identity.Aïssatou Mbodj-Pouye examines the changing roles that foyers have played in the lives of generations of West African migrants, weaving together rich ethnographic description with a critical historical account. She shows how migrants settled in foyers through kinship ties, making these buildings key parts of diasporic networks. Migrants also forged a sense of place in foyers, in an intricate relationship with bureaucratic requirements such as having an address. Mbodj-Pouye scrutinizes the physical and social evolution of foyers and the administrative dynamics that governed them. She argues that even though these buildings originated in state attempts to manage migrants along racial lines, the shared way of life that they encouraged helped spark a sense of political agency and belonging whose significance extends far beyond their walls.Combining close attention to the social and cultural meanings of the foyers and keenly observed portraits of Black experiences in France across decades, An Address in Paris offers a new lens on the global African diaspora.

    Abstract: A trenchant case for a novel philosophical position: that our political thinking is driven less by commitments to freedom or fairness than by an aversion to hierarchy.Niko Kolodny argues that, to a far greater extent than we recognize, our political thinking is driven by a concern to avoid relations of inferiority. In order to make sense of the most familiar ideas in our political thought and discourse-the justification of the state, democracy, and rule of law, as well as objections to paternalism and corruption-we cannot merely appeal to freedom, as libertarians do, or to distributive fairness, as liberals do. We must instead appeal directly to claims against inferiority-to the conviction that no one should stand above or below.The problem of justifying the state, for example, is often billed as the problem of reconciling the state with the freedom of the individual. Yet, Kolodny argues, once we press hard enough on worries about the state's encroachment on the individual, we end up in opposition not to unfreedom but to social hierarchy. To make his case, Kolodny takes inspiration from two recent trends in philosophical thought: on the one hand, the revival of the republican and Kantian traditions, with their focus on domination and dependence; on the other, relational egalitarianism, with its focus on the effects of the distribution of income and wealth on our social relations.The Pecking Order offers a detailed account of relations of inferiority in terms of objectionable asymmetries of power, authority, and regard. Breaking new ground, Kolodny looks ahead to specific kinds of democratic institutions that could safeguard against such relations.

    Abstract: The contributors to The Black Geographic explore the theoretical innovations of Black Geographies scholarship and how it approaches Blackness as historically and spatially situated. In studies that span from Oakland to the Alabama Black Belt to Senegal to Brazil, the contributors draw on ethnography, archival records, digital humanities, literary criticism, and art to show how understanding the spatial dimensions of Black life contributes to a broader understanding of race and space.     Abstract: Hannah Arendt was one of the foremost political theorists of the twentieth century to wrestle with the role of violence in public life. Yet remarkably, despite the fact that it was perhaps the most pressing issue of her era, this theme in her work has rarely been explored. In Violence and Power in the Thought of Hannah Arendt, Caroline Ashcroft deepens our understanding of Arendt's conception of the role of violence, offering a critical reading of her work and using it as a provocation to think about how we might engage with contemporary ideas.Arendt has generally been thought to exclude acts of violence from "the political," based on her supposed idealization of ancient democratic politics. Ashcroft argues that Arendt has been widely misunderstood by both critics and advocates on this. By examining Arendt's thought on violence in key examples of political practice such as modern Jewish politics, the politics of Greece and Rome, and the French and American revolutions, Ashcroft reveals a more pragmatic notion of the place of violence in the political. She argues that what Arendt opposes in political violence is the use of force to determine politics, an idea central to modern sovereignty. What Arendt criticizes is not violence as such, but the misuse of violence and misunderstandings of politics which exclude participatory power altogether.This work also engages with a wider set of concerns in political theory by obliging us to rethink the relations between violence and politics. Arendt's work offers a way to bridge the gulf between sovereign or realist politics and nonhierarchical, nonviolent participatory politics, and thus offers valuable resources for contemporary political theory.

    Abstract: In Around the Day in Eighty Worlds Martin Savransky calls for a radical politics of the pluriverse amid the ongoing devastation of the present. Responding to an epoch marked by the history of colonialism and ecological devastation, Savransky draws on the pragmatic pluralism of William James to develop what Savransky calls a "pluralistic realism"-an understanding of the world as simultaneously one and many, ongoing and unfinished, underway and yet to be made. Savransky explores the radical multifariousness of reality by weaving key aspects of James's thought together with divergent worlds and stories: of Magellan's circumnavigation, sorcery in Mozambique, God's felt presence among a group of evangelicals in California, visible spirits in Zambia, and ghosts in the wake of the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Throughout, he experiments with these storied worlds to dramatize new ways of approaching the politics of radical difference and the possibility of transforming reality. By exploring and constructing relations between James's pluralism and the ontological turn in anthropology, Savransky offers a new conceptualization of the pluriverse that fosters modes of thinking and living otherwise.

    Abstract: As we taste, chew, swallow, digest, and excrete, our foods transform us, while our eating, in its turn, affects the wider earthly environment. In Eating in Theory Annemarie Mol takes inspiration from these transformative entanglements to rethink what it is to be human. Drawing on fieldwork at food conferences, research labs, health care facilities, restaurants, and her own kitchen table, Mol reassesses the work of authors such as Hannah Arendt, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Hans Jonas, and Emmanuel Levinas. They celebrated the allegedly unique capability of humans to rise above their immediate bodily needs. Mol, by contrast, appreciates that as humans we share our fleshy substance with other living beings, whom we cultivate, cut into pieces, transport, prepare, and incorporate-and to whom we leave our excesses. This has far-reaching philosophical consequences. Taking human eating seriously suggests a reappraisal of being as transformative, knowing as entangling, doing as dispersed, and relating as a matter of inescapable dependence.

    Abstract: Die Großwohnbauten, die während des Baubooms der 1960er- und 1970er-Jahre die schweizerische Siedlungslandschaft grundlegend veränderten, sind im Laufe der Jahre zunehmend in Verruf geraten. Doch wie gestalten sich - jenseits der weit verbreiteten Klischees - die Lebenswirklichkeiten in diesem Baubestand?Eveline Althaus richtet den Blick auf die Nachbarschaften von Hochhaussiedlungen in der Schweiz. Anhand von Hausbiografien untersucht sie die sozialräumlichen Dynamiken und beleuchtet, wie Vielfalt und Differenz im Wohnumfeld erfahren und (re-)produziert werden. Dadurch eröffnet sie neue Perspektiven auf den Umgang mit diesem gebauten Erbe und Formen des Zusammenlebens in heterogener werdenden Settings.

    Abstract: In her endeavour to overcome the established methodological, conceptual, and empirical dualism of mobility and migration, Anna Xymena Wieczorek develops a "mobilities perspective" by combining migration studies theories with approaches of the mobility studies. With the help of rich empirical data gathered among young adults of Polish heritage in Germany and Canada, Wieczorek conceptualizes three patterns of (im)mobility which illustrate the diversity of immigrants' geographical movements after their initial migration. She thus reveals the different social configurations promoting or hindering the development, maintenance or shifting of each pattern in migrants' biographical trajectories.

    Abstract: Around the term 'place' a process of theory formation has emerged in English-language philosophy with hermeneutic and phenomenological orientation, which in Germany has until now rarely been acknowledged. This book changes that - with both foundational philosophical contributions from relevant authors on thinking about 'place' as well as with articles which illustrate the difficulties of 'place' via individual analyses of concrete examples. It addresses among others the meaning of 'place' in literature, popular media such as film and computer games, cults and myths, as well as in the fusion of economy and everyday experience.
    Abstract: Rund um den Begriff »Ort« hat in der englischsprachigen Philosophie hermeneutischer und phänomenologischer Prägung ein Prozess der Theoriebildung eingesetzt, der in Deutschland bislang nur wenig rezipiert wurde. Der Band ändert dies - er vereint sowohl grundlegende philosophische Beiträge zum Ortsdenken einschlägiger Autor_innen als auch Beiträge, in denen die Ortsproblematik an konkreten Beispielen in Einzelanalysen verdeutlicht wird. Zum Thema wird dabei u.a. die Bedeutung des Ortes in der Literatur, in populären Medien wie Film und Computerspielen, in Kult und Mythos sowie in der Verquickung von Ökonomie und Alltagserfahrung.

    Abstract: Since Edward Said’s foundational work, Orientalism has been singled out for critique as the quintessential example of Western intellectuals’ collaboration with oppression. Controversies over the imbrications of knowledge and power and the complicity of Orientalism in the larger project of colonialism have been waged among generations of scholars. But has Orientalism come to stand in for all of the sins of European modernity, at the cost of neglecting the complicity of the rest of the academic disciplines?In this landmark theoretical investigation, Wael B. Hallaq reevaluates and deepens the critique of Orientalism in order to deploy it for rethinking the foundations of the modern project. Refusing to isolate or scapegoat Orientalism, Restating Orientalism extends the critique to other fields, from law, philosophy, and scientific inquiry to core ideas of academic thought such as sovereignty and the self. Hallaq traces their involvement in colonialism, mass annihilation, and systematic destruction of the natural world, interrogating and historicizing the set of causes that permitted modernity to wed knowledge to power. Restating Orientalism offers a bold rethinking of the theory of the author, the concept of sovereignty, and the place of the secular Western self in the modern project, reopening the problem of power and knowledge to an ethical critique and ultimately theorizing an exit from modernity’s predicaments. A remarkably ambitious attempt to overturn the foundations of a wide range of academic disciplines while also drawing on the best they have to offer, Restating Orientalism exposes the depth of academia’s lethal complicity in modern forms of capitalism, colonialism, and hegemonic power.

    Abstract: As lived somatic realities and forms of practice, heterotopias form (im)possible places of confrontation/interaction. The contributions to this book question the materiality and (dis)orderings of these 'completely other spaces'. Throughout, corporeality remains the central point of reference in this analysis and helps concentrate the transdisciplinary examination on the (self-) realisations of the moving, somatic subject, as well as collective or institutionalised practices. The diverse theoretical perspectives present in this book open a horizon that comprises living intensities and abilities to act but also the fragile and critical.

The ethnography contrasts the lives of refugees who arrived in America after 1975, with their focus on Khmer traditions, values, and relations, with those of their children who, as descendants of the Khmer Rouge catastrophe, have struggled to become Americans in a society that defines them as different. The ethnography explores America's mid-twentieth-century involvement in Southeast Asia and its enormous consequences on multiple generations of Khmer refugees.

    Abstract: Spätestens seit der Lehre vom Naturzustand, die Thomas Hobbes auf so folgenreiche Weise ausgearbeitet hat, steht die Todesproblematik im Zentrum der politischen Philosophie. Denn unter der Bedingung einer geringeren Eindämmung durch Jenseitsfiktionen erscheint die Absolutheit des Todes nicht nur als eine angstbesetzte Bedrohung, sondern zugleich auch als das, was die politische Ordnung aufrecht erhält. Mit der Fundierung der Gemeinschaft in einer Todesdrohung, die alle angeht, taucht jedoch zugleich eine neue Problematik auf: die Zersetzung der Gemeinschaft, der wiederum allein durch den Horizont einer kollektiven Todesdrohung entgegengewirkt werden kann. Ausgehend von dieser Problematik, zeichnet die Studie von Leander Scholz am Leitfaden politischer Thanatologien den historischen Umbau von einer politischen Theologie zur politischen Ökonomie nach, sowie die Umformung der politischen Ökonomie zu einer politischen Ökologie. Hierbei steht die Formierung eines Lebenswillens im Vordergrund, der nicht mehr bereit ist, die Verinnerlichung der Todesdrohung als Horizont seiner Selbstbehauptung anzuerkennen.

Inwieweit sich gerade die Geschlechterbeziehungen als Ausdruck solch natürlicher Ordnung verstehen lassen, ist eine der zentralen Fragen einer kritischen feministischen Philosophie.     Abstract: Im 16. Jahrhundert verlor Venedig durch die Entdeckung Amerikas und vor allem durch den neuen Seeweg nach Indien die dominante Stellung im Fernhandel. Dies traf die Venezianer völlig unvorbereitet und die Anpassung an die neuen Verhältnisse ging nur langsam vonstatten. Die städtischen Diskurse erfassten die neue Realität lange nur unzureichend. Ein Grund dafür liegt in der Art, wie geographische Räume wahrgenommen wurden. Vor allem unter dem starken ökonomischen Druck des neuen globalen Pfefferhandels erweiterte sich die Betrachtungsweise. Allerdings sind schon anfangs des 16. Jahrhunderts einzelne Personengruppen auszumachen, die sich ohne unmittelbaren Nutzen für die Entdeckungsfahrten interessierten. Die vorliegende breit angelegte Studie untersucht anhand von Texten und Weltkarten jener Zeit die Veränderung der Wahrnehmung weit entfernter und nah gelegener Regionen. Es wird gezeigt, wie sich unter dem Einfluss von Faktoren aus Politik, Wirtschaft, Kultur und Religion bei den Menschen der Lagunenstadt schlie¿lich eine philosophisch und ästhetisch inspirierte Faszination für das neue Bild der Welt entwickelte. Ereignisse und Entwicklungen werden den Dimensionen der Wahrnehmung gegenübergestellt. Die Art und Weise, wie Menschen die geographischen Räume aufgefasst haben, erscheint damit als wichtiger Faktor für politisches und ökonomisches Handeln - ein Aspekt, der bisher nicht im Fokus der Forschung war. In dieser originellen Analyse bis heute anhaltender Prozesse wird deutlich, wie sich die globale Realität von der entsprechenden Wahrnehmung unterscheiden kann. Das Buch lässt sich im Übrigen als Übersicht über die geographische Literatur im Venedig des 16. Jahrhunderts nutzen.

    Abstract: In dieser Monographie wird, beginnend mit einem biographischen und zeitgeschichtlichen Grundriss, zum ersten Mal das umfangreiche strafrechtliche, rechtsphilosophische und philosophische Gesamtwerk Arthur Baumgartens dargestellt. Baumgarten war im Jahr seiner bei Franz v. Liszt verteidigten Dissertation (1909) nach Genf berufen worden und lehrte in Köln, Basel, Frankfurt/M. und Berlin. Von der dreiteiligen "Wissenschaft vom Recht" (1922) urteilte Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy im "Archiv des öffentlichen Rechts", hier sei die Jurisprudenz auf Philosophie gegründet, und die Lehre Baumgartens werde neben Stammler und Nelson die stärkste Wirkung aufs Rechtsdenken gewinnen. Mit seinen philosophischen Schriften wurde Baumgarten, beeinflusst von James und Dewey, in den zwanziger und dreißiger Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts ein Vordenker des sozialliberalen Pragmatismus in der deutschen Philosophie und nahm deren Hinwendung zur angloamerikanischen philosophischen Tradition um Jahrzehnte vorweg. 1933 erklärte er, unterm NS-Regime nicht Rechtwissenschaft lehren zu können, und ging von Frankfurt in die Schweizer Emigration. Die Erfahrung von Faschismus und Krieg führte ihn in der Mitte der vierziger Jahre zu sozialistischen Überzeugungen und Erwartungen und zur Marxschen sozialwissenschaftlichen Methode, so dass er, nach Frankfurt nicht zurückberufen, gleich anderen antifaschistischen Intellektuellen in die Ostzone und spätere DDR zog. Gerd Irrlitz behandelt die Hauptwerke und die marxistisch orientierten Texte Baumgartens - wie überhaupt die sozialliberale und die späte sozialistische Periode - nicht als Gegensätze, sondern als aufeinander bezogene und einander bedingende Konzepte, überzeugt, dass das Werk des Rechtsphilosophen unterm Erfordernis der Erneuerung des sozialen Liberalismus in der hochindustriellen Zivilisation neue Aktualität gewinnen...

    Abstract: Die alltägliche Begegnung mit dem Fremden wird oft als eine Quelle der Verunsicherung gesehen - und als eine der Ursachen für Fremdenfeindlichkeit. Was aber, wenn das Gegenteil der Fall ist? Abseits der Diskussionen um Minaretthöhen stellt diese Studie anhand des konkreten Beispiels kleiner migrantengeführter Lebensmittelgeschäfte die Integrationsfrage dort, wo das Zusammenleben mit dem Fremden tagtäglich erprobt wird. Dabei wird von alltagspraktischem Wirtschaftshandeln auf lokaler Ebene ausgegangen und mittels ethnographischer Methoden schrittweise ein praktisches und theoretisches Verständnis der eigentlichen Problematik gewonnen. Diese zeigt sich hier weniger in kultureller Differenz als in der Aushandlung sozialer Rollen vor dem Hintergrund alltäglicher Praktiken des Einkaufs.

    Abstract: Die Bedeutung des palästinensisch-amerikanischen Kritikers Edward W. Said (1935-2003) für die Zusammenführung vormals disparater kultureller und politischer Debatten ist international längst anerkannt. Erstmals liegt nun eine umfassende Werkeinführung und intellektuelle Biographie in deutscher Sprache vor. Unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der arabischen Diskurssituation illustriert die vergleichende Rezeptionsanalyse zudem die cross-kulturelle Wirkung Saids. In vergleichender Perspektive werden seine wechselnden epistemologischen und politischen Verortungen erschlossen. Die in die Studie einbezogenen Stimmen stammen aus der akademischen Kritik und Historiographie, der politischen Theorie, dem journalistischen und kreativen Schreiben sowie aus den audiovisuellen Künsten. Indem hier dezidiert der Frage nachgegangen wird, was tatsächlich geschieht, wenn Saids Kritik über die Grenzen kultureller und sozialer Differenz reist, gelingt es exemplarisch, die emanzipatorischen Potentiale, aber auch die Hindernisse des postkolonialen kritischen Engagements herauszuarbeiten.

    Abstract: Seit Platons Schriftkritik und Aristoteles' Poetik ist die Frage nach den Medien ein Grundthema philosophischer Reflexion. Durch die Weiterentwicklung der technischen Verbreitungsmedien hat dieses Thema in der Moderne zusätzliche Brisanz erlangt. Zu sich selbst jedoch ist die philosophische Reflexion der Medien erst im 20. Jahrhundert gekommen. Im Zentrum dieser bisher nur unzureichend institutionalisierten Disziplin steht die philosophische Analyse der Zusammenhänge, die zwischen sinnlichen Wahrnehmungsmedien (wie Raum Zeit und den fünf Sinnen), semiotischen Kommunikationsmedien (wie Bild, Sprache, Schrift und Musik) und technischen Verbreitungsmedien (wie Stimme, Körper, Theater, Buchdruck, Film, Fernsehen, Computer und Internet) existieren. Der Band gibt eine Einführung in aktuelle medienphilosophische Grundpositionen und vermittelt einen systematischen Überblick über Geschichte und Gegenwart der unterschiedlichen medienphilosophischen Teildisziplinen. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, wie sich Veränderungen, die sich in den Bereichen der technischen Verbreitungsmedien und/oder semiotischen Kommunikationsmedien vollziehen, auf die sinnlichen Wahrnehmungsmedien und, vermittelt über diese, auf unser Wirklichkeitsverständnis auswirken können.
