Neue Entwicklungen mit nicht vorhersehbaren Folgen wurden ausgelöst, die bis heute nachwirken – ein Grund für die Sozialwissenschaften, auch zwei Jahrzehnte nach dem November 1989 auf die Auswirkungen dieses Einschnitts für die östlichen Bundesländer zu blicken und Erklärungsansätze für aktuelle Phänomene zu suchen.     Kurzfassung: Abstract: In dem Aufsatz wird ausgeführt, dass in den vergangenen Jahren das Nachdenken über die soziale Zukunft Europas allzu sehr im Zeichen des Wohlfahrtskapitalismus stand. Die meisten Probleme, vor denen das Europäische Sozialmodell heute steht, betreffen nicht spezifisch einzelne Länder, sondern sie sind strukturell bedingt. Die Konzeption eines 'Erneuerten Europäisches Sozialmodells' wird skizziert, das sich vor allem durch eine Verschiebung von negativer zu positiver Sozialstaatlichkeit auszeichnet. Positive Ziele des Sozialstaats sind dabei die Förderung von Bildung und Lernen, Wohlstand, soziale und wirtschaftliche Partizipation sowie gesunde Lebensweisen. Grundlegend ist eine Balance von Rechten und Pflichten sowie von Risiken und Sicherheit. Außerdem wird dafür plädiert, dass sich das neue Europäische Sozialmodell verstärkt auf Gebühren stützen sowie entbürokratisiert werden soll.     Kurzfassung: No survey can capture the breadth and depth of the anti-Americanism that has swept Europe in recent years. From ultraconservative Bavarian grandmothers to thirty-year-old socialist activists in Greece, from globalization opponents to corporate executives--Europeans are joining in an ever louder chorus of disdain for America. For the first time, anti-Americanism has become a European lingua franca. In this sweeping and provocative look at the history of European aversion to America, Andrei Markovits argues that understanding the ubiquity of anti-Americanism since September 11, 2001, requires an appreciation of such sentiments among European elites going back at least to July 4, 1776. While George W. Bush's policies have catapulted anti-Americanism into overdrive, particularly in Western Europe, Markovits argues that this loathing has long been driven not by what America does, but by what it is. Focusing on seven Western European countries big and small, he shows how antipathies toward things American embrace aspects of everyday life--such as sports, language, work, education, media, health, and law--that remain far from the purview of the Bush administration's policies. Aggravating Europeans' antipathies toward America is their alleged helplessness in the face of an Americanization that they view as inexorably befalling them. More troubling, Markovits argues, is that this anti-Americanism has cultivated a new strain of anti-Semitism. Above all, he shows that while Europeans are far apart in terms of their everyday lives and shared experiences, their not being American provides them with a powerful common identity--one that elites have already begun to harness in their quest to construct a unified Europe to rival America.

    Kurzfassung: Abstract: "Der politische Prozess der europäischen Integration hat entscheidend zu einer Europäisierung der Gesellschaften Europas beigetragen. Ob dieser systemische Prozess der Europäisierung von einer lebensweltlichen Europäisierung im Sinne einer Zunahme der Kommunikation zwischen den Bürgern verschiedener Mitgliedsländer begleitet wird, hängt entscheidend von der Mehrsprachigkeit der Bürger ab. In welchem Maße die Bürger der 27 Länder mehrsprachig sind und wie man die Unterschiede in der Ausstattung mit transnationalem, linguistischem Kapital erklären kann, ist das Thema des Artikels. In einem ersten Schritt werde ich die Sprachpolitik der Europäischen Union beschreiben. Diese ist durch zwei Merkmale gekennzeichnet: Die Akzeptanz der sprachlichen Heterogenität der Europäischen Union und der Verzicht auf eine Politik der sprachlichen Homogenisierung einerseits und die Förderung der Mehrsprachigkeit der Bürger Europas zur Verbesserung der Integration Europas andererseits.     Kurzfassung: Abstract: "Auch ohne den expliziten Prozess europäischer Verfassungsgebung zum Abschluss zu bringen, wird die Konstitutionalisierung der Europäischen Union in der Form einer Formalisierung und Legalisierung von Herrschaft voranschreiten. Die Verfasstheit des europäischen Gemeinwesens tritt dabei zunehmend in Widerspruch zur Verfasstheit des sozialen Konstituenten von Herrschaft, der weder als 'Demos' noch als 'Volk' in einem gesamteuropäischen Entscheidungszusammenhang in Erscheinung tritt. Allerdings mündet die Konstitutionalisierung der EU in dem Postulat eines 'europäischen Demos' als Voraussetzung der Legitimität europäischen Regierens. Die daran anschließende empirische Frage lautet, inwiefern solche geteilte normative Erwartungshaltungen in die Existenz eines europäischen 'Demos' kommunikative Austauschprozesse über die nationalstaatlichen Grenzen hinweg anleiten.     Kurzfassung: Abstract: "Mit der EU-Erweiterung entstehen u.a. durch Migration neue soziale Zusammenhänge, die im Anschluss an Bourdieu sowie Pries (2001) und Faist (1998) als transnationale soziale Räume analysiert werden können. Voraussetzung des darzustellenden Forschungsvorhabens ist die Annahme eines spezifischen transnationalen sozialen Raums, der zwischen Ländern als EU-Beitrittskandidaten und EU-Staaten geschaffen wird - bzw. einem spezifischen sozialen Raum, der durch die Übergangsbestimmungen für neu aufgenommene Staaten strukturiert ist. Während dieser soziale Raum einerseits durch rechtliche Bestimmungen und Verordnungen definiert ist, wird er gleichzeitig durch Wanderungsbewegungen hergestellt. Dabei richtet sich das Interesse der Verfasserin besonders auf die Transnationalisierung gesellschaftlicher Arbeitsteilung unter den Bedingungen der EU-Erweiterungen sowie der Tertiarisierung der Arbeitsmärkte.     Kurzfassung: The European Union's motto 'United in Diversity' contrasts with the cultural standardization entailed in the formation of nation-states and the forging of political identities in Europe. So what does being 'united in diversity' mean? Focusing on language politics and policies, this book offers a thorough assessment of the implications of cultural and linguistic diversity for the process of constructing a European polity. It sheds light on some of the most pressing problems associated with contemporary identity politics. It is often claimed that the recurrent celebration of diversity in Europe's programmatic declarations has an effective political impact.     Kurzfassung: Traveling to archives in Tunisia, Morocco, France, and England, with visits to Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Spain, Nabil Matar assembles a rare history of Europe's rise to power as seen through the eyes of those who were later subjugated by it. Many historians of the Middle East believe Arabs and Muslims had no interest in Europe during this period of Western discovery and empire, but in fact these groups were very much engaged with the naval and industrial development, politics, and trade of European Christendom. Beginning in 1578 with a major Moroccan victory over a Portuguese invading army, Matar surveys this early modern period, in which Europeans and Arabs often shared common political, commercial, and military goals. Matar concentrates on how Muslim captives, ransomers, traders, envoys, travelers, and rulers pursued those goals while transmitting to the nonprint cultures of North Africa their knowledge of the peoples and societies of Spain, France, Britain, Holland, Italy, and Malta. From the first non-European description of Queen Elizabeth I to early accounts of Florence and Pisa in Arabic, from Tunisian descriptions of the Morisco expulsion in 1609 to the letters of a Moroccan Armenian ambassador in London, the translations of the book's second half draw on the popular and elite sources that were available to Arabs in the early modern period. Letters from male and female captives in Europe, chronicles of European naval attacks and the taqayid (newspaper) reports on Muslim resistance, and descriptions of opera and quinine appear here in English for the first time. Matar notes that the Arabs of the Maghrib and the Mashriq were eager to engage Christendom, despite wars and rivalries, and hoped to establish routes of trade and alliances through treaties and royal marriages. The reasons for this unique development have occupied ethnologists, sociologists and historians for quite some time. This book is the first to trace the radical expansion of marriage prohibitions across epochs and advances the thesis that this development came about as a result of the decline of power in Antiquity and the changing functions of legislation.     Kurzfassung: Das Verbot von Verwandtenehen (Inzest) stand vom 6. bis ins 11. Jahrhundert im Mittelpunkt der Gesetzgebung. Kaiser und Könige, Bischöfe und Päpste erließen immer wieder neue Regelungen zum Inzestdelikt und stellten diese Bestimmungen häufig an die Spitze von Gesetzestexten und Kodifikationen. Die Reichweite der verbotenen Verwandten wurde dabei stetig ausgedehnt. Im 11. Jahrhundert war es kaum möglich, Ehen zu schließen, die nicht aufgrund des Inzestverbots angefochten werden konnten. Die Sorge um die Gültigkeit von Eheschließungen beschäftigte insbesondere den Adel, da mit der Illegitimität der Kinder der soziale Status auf das Spiel gesetzt wurde.Über dieses einzigartige Phänomen wird in der historischen, ethnologischen und soziologischen Forschung eine intensive Diskussion geführt. Dieses Buch zeichnet die radikale Ausdehnung der Ehehindernisse erstmals epochenübergreifend und transkulturell nach. Es wird die These aufgestellt, dass die Entstehungsbedingungen dieser „Obsession“ im Funktionswandel von Gesetzgebung und in den Reaktionen von Königen, Kaisern und Bischöfen auf den Verlust antiker Staatlichkeit zu suchen sind. Die ausgedehnten Inzestverbote sollten die Etablierung überregionaler Heiratsmärkte herbeiführen und dadurch der Integration von Großreichen dienen.

    Kurzfassung: Abstract: "Die historisch tradierte 'ontologische Unsicherheit' (Nicole Lindstrom) der Zugehörigkeit Osteuropas zu Europa als Sinnbild okzidentaler Rationalität, Zivilisation und Moderne ist als zyklisch wiederkehrende 'Erfindung Osteuropas' (Larry Wolff) thematisiert und für die Entstehung von 'Balkanismus' (Maria Todorova) und 'eingenistete Orientalismen' (Milica BakicHayden) als ausschlaggebend betrachtet worden. Im Kontext der EU-Osterweiterung sowie der Herausbildung 'neuer' geopolitischer Antagonismen (Westen vs. Islam) nach den Anschlägen des 11. September gewinnen diese Analysekategorien zunehmend an Relevanz. Der Zusammenbruch kommunistischer Regimes und der gleichzeitig beginnende Wettkampf um die Integration in europäische und transatlantische Strukturen hatten daher die Wiederaufnahme der Identitätsdiskurse zur Folge, die das Verhältnis der Region zum Westen Europas Jahrhunderte zuvor geprägt hatten.     Kurzfassung: Abstract: "Das hier vorgestellte Forschungsprojekt untersucht vor dem Hintergrund der Europäisierung mit einer qualitativen empirischen Studie die Migration von deutschen Facharbeitern innerhalb der EU. Untersuchungsgruppe ist damit eine neue und zahlenmäßig wichtiger werdende Migrationsgruppe im europäischen Migrationsraum. Soziologische Forschungsergebnisse liegen dazu bisher kaum vor. Zentrale Ziele der Untersuchung sind die Erforschung der Migrationsgründe und der sozialen Netzwerke. Um diese Aspekte zu erfassen, wird eine Mehrfachbefragung ab August 2006 realisiert, mittels der die Migranten sowohl vor wie auch nach dem eigentlichen Migrationsereignis interviewt werden (insgesamt 70 berufsbiografische Interviews). Dieses Design ermöglicht, den Migrationsverlauf sehr detailliert nachzuvollziehen. So lassen sich die Migrationsgründe nicht nur zum Zeitpunkt der Wanderung, sondern auch möglicherweise davon divergierende Bleibegründe erfassen. Gleiches gilt für die Veränderung und Entstehung

    Kurzfassung: Abstract: Der Autor erläutert in seinem Vortrag folgende These, aus welcher er eine Reihe von Prognosen und Spekulationen zur "medikalisierten" Gesellschaft ableitet: Der europäische Homo faber wird heute zusehends in eine Situation getrieben, in der es ihm nicht mehr erlaubt sein wird, von seiner natürlichen Konstitution wie von seiner Persönlichkeit so wenig zu wissen, wie es ihm gestern noch möglich war. Er wird zu einer kaum geahnten und doch gefürchteten Kenntnis von sich und zu Erwartungen gezwungen sein, weil solche Kenntnis durch die moderne Biotechnologie nunmehr möglich ist. Andernfalls würde der europäische Homo faber, der allzu ausschweifend von seiner Lizenz des Nichtwissens und der Eigenignoranz Gebrauch macht, umkommen und keine organisierte Gesellschaftlichkeit könnte ihm vom Sturz abhalten. Der Autor verdeutlicht diesen unbedingten Zwang zur Selbstkenntnis und damit zur Selbstverfügung anhand der raschen Entwicklung der Gentechnologie, insbesondere der In-vitro-Fertilisation

    Kurzfassung: Abstract: "Auf der Basis einer Auswertung einer Eurobarometerbefragung beschreiben wir in einem ersten Schritt die Intensität der Hochkulturnutzung der Bürger in 27 Ländern der Europäischen Union. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Partizipation an hochkulturellen Institutionen (Oper, Theater, Museen, Konzert) zusammen ein Verhaltenssyndrom bilden, so dass man von einem einheitlichen, hochulturellen Lebensstil sprechen kann. Die Analysen zeigen weiterhin, dass die Intensität der Nutzung des hochkulturellen Angebots in allen Ländern recht gering ist, bei gleichzeitiger Varianz zwischen und innerhalb der Länder. In einem zweiten Schritt versuchen wir, die Unterschiede in der Praktizierung eines hochkulturellen Lebensstils zu erklären und greifen dazu auf die Theorie von Pierre Bourdieu zurück. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass das institutionalisierte und inkorporierte kulturelle Kapital des Befragten und seine Berufsposition einen starken Einfluss auf seinen Lebensstil haben.     Kurzfassung: Der experimentelle Dokumentarfilm reflektiert Besonderheiten eines Aufeinandertreffens westafrikanischer und europäisch/westlicher Kultur. Er stellt Westeuropäer vor, die einige Jahre in Westafrika lebten, zeigt Straßensituationen, erzählt Begebenheiten, sammelt Materialien und Eindrücke von den Reisen der Filmemacherin nach Ghana, Benin und in den Senegal. Gisa, die mit ihrer Tochter Madita mehrere Jahre in Burkina Faso lebte, beschreibt Momente der Nähe und Fremdheit dort. Vertrautes zeigt sich im fremden Umfeld manchmal grotesk, manchmal poetisiert. Bilder und Motive möglicher Faszination und Sehnsucht nach dem Anderen kontrastieren mit der Frage, ob ein Kontakt zur Fremde überhaupt möglich ist. Der Film ist auf Super-8 und Mini-DV gedreht. Durch die Materialwirkungen und den Wechsel von Momentaufnahmen und aus der Zeit gehobenen bildhaften Einstellungen entsteht gelegentlich ein schwebender Zustand zwischen Vorstellung und konkretem Alltag.
    Kurzfassung: The experimental documentary reflects the encounter between West African and European/Western culture, introducing Europeans who lived in West Africa for some years. It shows situations on the streets, tells stories, collects materials and impressions from journeys of the film maker to Ghana, Benin and Senegal. Gisa, who lived with her daughter Madita in Burkina Faso for several years, recalls moments of closeness and foreignness. The most trusted things can sometimes appear grotesque, sometimes poeticized in a foreign environment. Images and stories of a potential fascination and longing for the Other contrast with the question whether a contact to the foreign is possible at all. The film was shot on super-8 and mini-DV. The material effects and the alternation between vivid shots and quasi timeless picturesque scenes occasionaly create a blur between imagination and plain everyday life.

    Kurzfassung: Abstract: Der Verfasser geht von der Annahme aus, dass Europas Grenzen nur als komplexe, sich überlappende Grenzgefüge zu erfassen sind. Räumlich sind sie durch Küstenlinien festgelegt, in sozialer Hinsicht aber werden Mitgliedschaftsräume (Verwandtschafts-, Siedlungs-, Religions- und Sprachgrenzen) relevant, die meist erst durch Grenzüberschreitung ins Bewusstsein rücken. Es wird gezeigt, dass Europa sich nicht nur durch territoriale und kategoriale Einteilungen auszeichnet, sondern auch dadurch, dass Grenzerhaltung und Grenzüberwindung sich verbinden. Ethnische Grenzen werden als ein Sonderfall innerhalb der europäischen Grenzstrukturen dargestellt, nämlich als Folge der Nationalstaatsbildung, der Kolonisation und der Wanderung. Der Glaube an die gemeinsame Abstammung, der sich häufig mit Territorialansprüchen verbindet, lässt ethnische Differenzen entstehen, die sich durch Besonderheiten der Sprache, Kleidung und Folklore hervorheben lassen.     Kurzfassung: Anglo-Saxon elves [Old English 〈I〉 ælfe〈/I〉] are one of the best attested non-Christian beliefs in early medieval Europe, but current interpretations of the evidence derive directly from outdated nineteenth- and early twentieth-century scholarship. Integrating linguistic and textual approaches into an anthropologically-inspired framework, this book reassesses the full range of evidence. It traces continuities and changes in medieval non-Christian beliefs with a new degree of reliability, from pre-conversion times to the eleventh century and beyond, and uses comparative material from medieval Ireland and Scandinavia to argue for a dynamic relationship between beliefs and society. In particular, it interprets the cultural significance of elves as a cause of illness in medical texts, and provides new insights into the much-discussed Scandinavian magic of 〈I〉seidr〈/I〉. The media impose an inescapable presence in contemporary life and infuse all areas of public communication. But what is the quality of the relationship between 'broadcaster' and 'citizen'? Do the media and media authorities take the audience's interests seriously into account? Do audiences have real opportunities to express themselves? Are citizens well informed and educated about the social, the cultural and the civic role that media can play? In this book, five authors present the main results of an extensive programme of research that was financed by the European Commission.     Kurzfassung: This 2007 book analyzes how, why, and when pre-modern Europeans documented their marriages - through property deeds, marital settlements, dotal charters, church court depositions, wedding liturgies, and other indicia of marital consent. The authors consider both the function of documentation in the process of marrying and what the surviving documents say about pre-modern marriage and how people in the day understood it. Drawing on archival evidence from classical Rome, medieval France, England, Iceland, and Ireland, and Renaissance Florence, Douai, and Geneva, the volume provides a rich interdisciplinary analysis of the range of marital customs, laws, and practices in Western Christendom. The chapters include freshly translated specimen documents that bring the reader closer to the actual practice of marrying than the normative literature of pre-modern theology and canon law.
