    Abstract: Waiting for the Revolution to End explores the Syrian revolution through the experiences of citizens in exile. Based on more than three years of embedded fieldwork with Syrians displaced in the border city of Gaziantep (southern Turkey), the book places the Syrian revolution and its tragic aftermath under ethnographic scrutiny. It charts the evolution from peaceful uprising (2011) to armed confrontation (2012), descent into fully fledged conflict (2013) and finally to proxy war (2015), to propose an understanding of revolution beyond success and failure. While the Assad regime remains in place, the Syrian revolution (al-thawra) still holds a transformational power that can be located on intimate and world-making scales. Charlotte Al-Khalili traces the unintended consequences of revolution and its unexpected consequences to reveal the reshaping of Syrian life-worlds and exiles’ evolving theorizations, experiences and imaginations of al-thawra. She describes the in-between spatio-temporal realm inhabited by Syrians displaced to Turkey as they await the revolution’s outcomes, and maps the revolution’s multidimensional and multi-scalar effects on their everyday life. By following the chronology of events inside Syria and Syrians’ geography of displacement, the book makes the relation between revolution and displacement its centerpiece, both as an ethnographic object and an analytical device.     Abstract: Rassismus ist ein unerledigtes Problem moderner Gesellschaften. Das Ineinander von Rationalität und Irrationalität prädestiniert Rassismus zum Gegenstand Kritischer Theorie: Diese verbindet gerade in den Varianten ihrer ersten Generation (Adorno, Horkheimer u.a.) die Perspektive auf Funktion und objektive Genese von Ideologien mit psychologischem Blick auf subjektive Verarbeitungsformen. Um Rassismus in eine Gesellschaftstheorie einzubetten, widmet sich Ulrike Marz den drei Kategorien Gesellschaft, Ökonomie und Subjekt. Damit erweitert sie den theoretischen Blickwinkel auf Rassismus und vermittelt mithilfe der Kritischen Theorie Gegensatzpaare, die oft nur einseitig beschieden werden: Objektivismus - Subjektivismus, Natur - Kultur, Partikularismus - Universalismus

Today the new struggles for South Africa' and to become South African' are inextricably intertwined with complex challenges of transformation, xenophobia, claims of reverse racism, social justice, economic justice, service delivery, and the resurgent decolonization struggles reverberating inside the universities. This book covers the genealogy of the idea of South Africa, exploring how the country has been conceived of by a broad group of actors, including the British, Afrikaners, diverse African nationalist traditions, and new formations such as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Black First Land First (BLF), and student formations (Rhodes Must Fall & Fees Must Fall). Over the course of the book, a broad range of themes are covered, including identity formation, modernity, race, ethnicity, indigeneity, autochthony, land, gender, intellectual traditions, poetics of South Africanness, language, popular culture, truth and reconciliation, and national development planning. Concluding with important reflections on how a colonial imaginary can be changed into a free and inclusive postcolonial nation-state, this book will be an important read for Africanist researchers from across the humanities and social sciences

Is this because we no longer understand what the American public is? In this book, Susan Herbst argues that we need to return to earlier meanings of 'public opinion' to understand our current climate. Herbst contends that the idea that there was a public - whose opinions mattered - emerged during the Great Depression, with the diffusion of radio, the devastating impact of the economic collapse on so many people, the appearance of professional pollsters, and Franklin Roosevelt's powerful rhetoric.     Abstract: Der Kampf gegen die Emanzipation von Frauen und sexuellen Minderheiten ist fester Bestandteil extrem rechter Weltanschauungen. Die Vorstellung, der "westliche" Mann werde unterdrückt und müsse sich gegen eine "Verweiblichung" zur Wehr setzen, eint große Teile des rechten Milieus. Tobias Ginsburg hat sich undercover in diese Welt überhöhter Männlichkeit begeben und traf auf selbsternannte Männerrechtler, Burschenschaftler, Nazi-Rapper, US-amerikanische "Proud Boys" und in Polen auf ein einflussreiches Institut rechts-religiöser Fundamentalisten, deren Netzwerk von den USA bis nach Russland reicht. Mit seiner Recherche gibt er einen Einblick in die verschiedenen Verflechtungen antifeministischer und rechter Ideologien und beschreibt einzelne Radikalisierungsbiografien. Mit seinen Beobachtungen macht er auch auf Strategien der Rekrutierung und Vernetzung sowie das in der Szene vorhandene Gewaltpotenzial aufmerksam.

    Abstract: "This book explains how colonial legacies and the postcolonial state of Pakistan negatively influenced the socio-political and cultural dynamics and the security situation in Pakistan's Pashtun 'tribal' areas, formerly known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). It offers a local perspective on peace and conflict resolution in Pakistan's Pashtun 'tribal' region. Discussing the history and background of the former-FATA region, the role of Pashtun conflict resolution mechanism of Jirga, and the persistence of colonial-era Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR) in the region, the author argues that the persistence of colonial legacies in the Pashtun 'tribal' areas, especially the FCR, coupled with the overarching influence of the military on security policy has negatively impacted the security situation in the region. By focusing on the Jirga and Jirga-based Lashkars (or Pashtun militias), the book demonstrates how Pashtuns have engaged in their own initiatives to handle the rise of militancy in their region. Moreover, the book contends that, even after the introduction of constitutional reforms and FATA's merger with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, little has changed in the region, especially regarding the treatment of 'tribal' Pashtuns as equal citizens of Pakistan. This book explains, in detail, why indigenous methods of peace and conflict resolution, such as the Jirga, could play "some" role towards long-term peace in the South Asian region. Historically and contextually informed with a focus on North-West Pakistan, this book will be of interest to academics researching South Asian Studies, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, terrorism, and traditional justice and restorative forms of peace-making."

    Abstract: Inwiefern lassen sich soziale Tatbestände in Gesellschaften von Wildbeutern und tribal organisierten Bauern/Viehzüchtern mit Hilfe von Spieltheorie, Institutionen- und Organisationsökonomik, "Public choice"- Theorie und der Evolutionsökonomik besser erklären als mit dem herkömmlichen Begriffs- und Modellinstrumentarium der Ethnologie? Inwiefern erlauben diese Ansätze, interessante Fragen zu stellen, die sich die Ethnologie bisher noch nicht gestellt hat? Neben einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit diesen akteurzentrierten Ansätzen, die sich oft an die neoklassische Theorie anlehnen, sollen wichtige Themen der Politischen Ökonomie einfacher Gesellschaften wie Produktions- und Machtstrategien, Legitimation von Machthierarchien, Gabentausch und Warentausch, Lokalgruppen und Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen, Krieg und Frieden sowie die Entstehung von Institutionen und Organisationsformen bei Wildbeutern und tribal organisierten Bauern/Viehzüchtern anhand von ethnographischen Fallbeispielen behandelt und im theoretischen Zusammenhang diskutiert werden.

    Abstract: Nach einem jahrzehntelangen Bürgerkrieg erlangt die Republik Südsudan am 9. Juli 2011 ihre Unabhängigkeit. Doch trotz aller Bemühungen um einen friedlichen Staatsaufbau nimmt die erste Dekade der Eigenstaatlichkeit einen gewaltsamen Verlauf: Im Dezember 2013 schlittert der Südsudan in einen blutig geführten Bürgerkrieg, der sich nicht als einheitlicher Konflikt mit klar definierbaren Parteien, sondern zu einem Amalgam komplex verschachtelter Konfliktlandschaften entwickelt. In analytischen Vignetten, die verschiedene Regionen sowie die nationale und internationale Dimension des Bürgerkrieges untersuchen, gibt Jan Pospisil einen Einblick in die südsudanesische Konfliktrealität.

    Abstract: In der Medienöffentlichkeit ist Identitätspolitik zum Kampfbegriff geworden. Als Verbalkeule dient er nicht zum Verständnis von Minderheiten, sondern schürt Emotionen. Dieses Buch möchte zur Versachlichung der Identitätsdebatten beitragen. Es benennt die Potenziale für einen Pluralismus der Identitäten ohne Diffamierungen und zeigt zugleich ihre Grenzen auf. So plädiert Scheller für eine Politik der Potenzialität. Der Liberalismus muss neu überdacht werden und die Möglichkeit des Individuums, sich immer wieder neu zu entwerfen, gegeben sein. Denn wenn über dem Geschäft des Identifizierens harter Realitäten vergessen wird, dass Menschen auch eigensinnige, schöpferische Wesen sind, dann gilt: keine Identifikation ohne Imagination. "Was an Schellers Essay in besonderer Weise überzeugt, ist zweierlei: zum einen, dass er nicht in der Diskurskritik verharrt, sondern für eine konstruktive Weiterentwicklung der – oft von verhärteten Fronten geprägten – Debatte eintritt. Zum anderen, dass sein Gegenentwurf sich nicht lediglich als ein beliebiger Ausfluss der eigenen Meinungsfreudigkeit liest, sondern dass der Autor seine spezifische Fachexpertise als Kunsthistoriker fruchtbar macht" (NZZ)

    Abstract: Macron et les Gilets jaunes ont ouvert une page nouvelle de l'histoire de France, qui mêle retour des luttes sociales et apathie politique, sursaut révolutionnaire et résignation devant les dégâts de l'euro, regain démocratique et menace autoritaire. Pour la comprendre, Emmanuel Todd examine, scrupuleusement et sans a priori, l'évolution rapide de notre société depuis le début des années 1990 : démographie, inégalités, niveau de vie, structure de classe, performance éducative, place des femmes, immigration, religion, suicide, consommation d'antidépresseurs, etc. Les faits surprendront. Les interprétations que propose l'auteur doivent, quant à elles, beaucoup à Marx, mais à un Marx mis "sous surveillance statistique". À gauche, comme à droite, elles paraîtront à beaucoup étonnantes, amusantes, contrariantes, ou angoissantes. Cet empirisme sans concession conduit même Emmanuel Todd à réviser radicalement certaines de ses analyses antérieures. À la lecture de ce livre riche, stimulant, provocateur, la vie politique des années 1992-2019 prend tout son sens : une longue comédie politique où s'invitent les classes sociales.     Abstract: Im 21. Jahrhundert sehen die Verfassungen zahlreicher lateinamerikanischer Staaten indigene Rechte auf territoriale Autonomie vor. Während viele Studien im Forschungsfeld diese Rechte vorwiegend als Anerkennung bestehender indigener Organisationsformen interpretieren, weist Michael Fackler auf den Veränderungsdruck hin, den staatliche Autonomievorstellungen beinhalten. Zu diesem Zweck untersucht er die Umsetzung indigener Autonomierechte in Bolivien. Seine detaillierte Ethnographie fokussiert auf Spannungen und Konflikte in der Aneignung rechtlicher Normsetzungen durch die lokale indigene Bevölkerung und legt die Vielschichtigkeit der Konstruktion staatlich-sanktionierter Autonomie offen
