Plus spontanée, plus diffuse aussi, la rumeur, ce « plus vieux media du monde », pose d'autres problèmes : comment naît-elle ? se propage-t-elle ? quel en est le contenu ? quelle place joue-t-elle dans le jeu politique, et plus largement dans le corps social ? L'étude des réseaux de communication mène ainsi de la rue à l'échoppe, des relais de chevaux mongols aux coursiers des rois et des papes.     Abstract: Les funérailles sont à la fin du Moyen Âge l'une des grandes cérémonies mettant en scène le pouvoir souverain. A l'image du Christ, qui triomphe de la mort par la résurrection, le prince défunt, plus humblement, triomphe de l'oubli par un faste funèbre impressionnant qui marque durablement les mémoires. La présente étude entreprend de le suivre depuis son décès jusqu'à sa dernière demeure, à travers des cérémonies religieuses, chevaleresques et politiques complexes, qui offrent de nombreuses similitudes avec le rituel royal. De multiples questions, objets de débats historiographiques, sont envisagées, comme la signification de l'effigie, simple ou double corps du prince, la place des funérailles dans les cérémonies d'inauguration ou l'intérêt porté au cœur du défunt. En restituant le prince dans sa majesté, les funérailles sont non seulement un rituel essentiel pour comprendre la spiritualité et les mentalités médiévales, mais également l'indice d'une histoire politique subtile, à l'ombre du trône royal.

    Abstract: "This book uses a wide range of sources on slavery--early American newspapers, court records, slave owners' journals, abolitionist literature, and the testimony of former slaves collected in autobiographies and in interviews--to argue that enslaved black men were sexually assaulted by both white men and white women. Scholarship has focused on women's exploitation and abuse and has noted that many of our sources similarly emphasize the abuse of women, silencing the stories of men. However, a careful reading of extant sources finds that sexual assault of enslaved men took a wide variety of forms, including outright physical penetrative assault, forced reproduction, sexual coercion and manipulation, and psychic abuse."--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: "Dimensions of Heritage and Memory is a landmark contribution on the politics of the past in Europe today. The book explores the meanings of heritage in a time of crisis, when the past permeates social and political divisions, identity contests and official projects to forge a European community. Providing an overview of the literature and an analysis of the assumptions, values and philosophies embedded within European-level policy, the book explores different dimensions of heritage and memory, from official sites, museums and policy, to party politics, historical re-enactments and the everyday ways in which people use the past to make sense of who they are. The volume explores how different understandings of and attachments to the European past produce different 'Europes' in the present, accounting for today's tense social and political relations. The book also explores formative histories for European identities that are neglected or hidden because of political circumstances and non-official heritage. Contributors consider the meanings of interlocking crises, such as economic fallout, xenophobia and the fragmentation of the EU, for new understandings of Europe's past in the present. Les élites, comprises ici au sens large, soit des élites politiques, économiques et culturelles, sont étudiées principalement dans l'espace du grand Sud-Ouest mais des exemples nationaux et étrangers élargissent le cadre régional. L'étude comparée entre les deux fins de siècles, xixe et xxe siècles, soulève le problème de la permanence ou du renouvellement des élites, de la constitution de viviers et de réseaux. Les auteurs ont pu constater au travers de leurs études très largement prosopographiques que ces deux fins de siècles sont un aboutissement plutôt qu'une rupture. La cause en est la faculté d'adaptation des élites aux structures qui elles peuvent changer. Le modèle opératoire des élites présente bien des permanences dans ces deux fins de siècles.

En concentrant l'attention sur l'événement retenu dans la chronologie de la prise de conscience politique des Congolais, on réduit la complexité des courants ayant porté ce texte, comme le montrent à l'envi les contributions réunies ici. Cependant, la commémoration s'accommode difficilement des explications plus conjoncturelles et structurelles qui permettent d'interpréter l'événement dans sa cohérence, avec les contradictions inhérentes au jeu d'échelle géographique et temporel. Que s'est-il donc réellement passe le 30 juin 1956 ? Date symbolique de l'histoire récente du Congo, l'événement a été vécu et interprété de manière très différente. Une réappropriation univoque dans le cadre de la commémoration des cinquante ans ne témoigne pas de cette diversité. II convient dès lors de contextualiser ce « réveil », cette « première manifestation publique » d'une conscience d'appartenir à un groupe social distinct par l'analyse du contexte immédiat et de l'héritage, réel ou suppose, attribué à Conscience africaine.

Une nouvelle génération grandissait, dont la guerre civile n'était plus l'expérience fondatrice. L'exil, c'est peut-être moins la perte d'un territoire que celle du temps : les républicains ont été privés de trente ans de la vie de leur pays. À la fin, ils ont dû s'avouer que leur véritable Espagne était cette image qu'ils avaient emportée et gardée en exil. Ils ont vieilli en France. Après en avoir rêvé si longtemps, ils ont su que le retour était impossible ; pas même souhaitable, peut-être, maintenant qu'un autre pays vivant les a mêlés à sa chair.     Abstract: Material Encounters and Indigenous Transformations in the Early Colonial Americas brings together 15 case studies focusing on the early colonial history and archaeology of indigenous cultural persistence and change in the Caribbean and its surrounding mainland(s) after AD 1492. With a special emphasis on material culture and by foregrounding indigenous agency in shaping the diverse outcomes of colonial encounters, this volume offers new perspectives on early modern cultural interactions in the first regions of the ‘New World’ that were impacted by European colonization. The volume contributors specifically investigate how foreign goods were differentially employed, adopted, and valued across time, space, and scale, and what implications such material encounters had for indigenous social, political, and economic structures.     Abstract: "The Way of the Barbarians examines a critical period in the development of conceptions of Chinese identity and of foreignness. After tracing thought about culture, customs, ritual, and ethnicity to BCE classical texts, Shao-yun Yang focuses on the meaning and boundaries of Chineseness during the Tang (618-907 CE) and Song (960-1276 CE) dynasties. This period is widely seen as a watershed during which Chinese society was transformed in fundamental ways by population growth, commercialization, urbanization, technological advances, the decline of the long-dominant 'great clan' elite, and the rise of a new literati elite via the greatly expanded civil service examination system. Accompanying shifts occurred in how the Chinese defined themselves as a people and understood their relationship to the rest of the world. Previous scholarship has postulated a ninth-century shift from a spirit of cosmopolitanism--which identified foreign peoples as 'barbarians' who were morally and culturally inferior but who could become Chinese through a 'civilizing' process of acculturation--to one of ostracism. Another view identifies a twelfth-century shift from a traditional notion of culturalism to a new Chinese nationalism, which considered foreigners to be immutably and dangerously 'other' and called for their exclusion from the Chinese world, by force if necessary. This carefully argued intellectual history challenges previous thinking regarding the balance between culture, nation, and race in premodern Chinese identity and engages with ongoing debates over the applicability and relevance of the concept of ethnicity to premodern China"--

Naturellement, la noblesse se révèle le groupe social le mieux disposé à son égard : le combat contre les infidèles est devenu un ornement chevaleresque. Les romans s'emplissent du récit des exploits de Charlemagne et de Godefroi de Bouillon, les ordres militaires conservent un prestige bien supérieur à ce qu'on écrit parfois, et les nobles de tout l'Occident s'en vont sur les frontières de la chrétienté, en Prusse ou en péninsule Ibérique, éprouver leur valeur face aux ennemis de la Croix. Faute de pouvoir embrasser le phénomène dans toute l'étendue de sa géographie, nous avons fait le choix de ne traiter, dans ce volume, que de la France, de la Bourgogne et de la Bohême. Pour les contemporains, la France, et plus encore son souverain, sont naturellement associés à l'idée de croisade, qu'il s'agisse de la récupération de la Terre sainte ou de la défense de la chrétienté contre les Ottomans. Aux côtés de la France, la Bourgogne tient un rang privilégié car, profitant de la faiblesse de leurs voisins, ses ducs ont opéré une translatio qui leur a permis de se présenter comme les plus aptes à relever le défi turc. Enfin, la Bohême mérite une attention toute particulière. Dans les années 1420, les nobles hussites se trouvent dans la situation inédite de devoir défendre par les armes leurs choix religieux et de conduire une guerre qu'ils jugent sainte face aux croisés mandatés par l'autorité pontificale. Confrontés à l'hostilité du pape, sans subir directement le péril musulman, ils ne tournent pourtant pas le dos à la chrétienté latine et manifestent, au contraire, le désir de prendre leur part de sa défense. En Bohême se trouvent ainsi noués beaucoup des enjeux qui sous-tendent le problème des conflits interconfessionnels en Europe à la fin du Moyen Âge.

    Abstract: La question des rapports entre les sexes et de la définition des rôles sexués est assez familière aux spécialistes de l'Antiquité. Néanmoins le renouvellement théorique apporté par la notion de genre incite l'équipe Phéacie, qui réunit des chercheurs et des enseignants-chercheurs spécialistes de l'Antiquité grecque et romaine, à proposer un premier bilan des problèmes que leur pose l'usage de cette catégorie. La variété des sources étudiées, épigraphiques, papyrologiques, archéologiques, littéraires, témoigne de l'ampleur que peut prendre un tel questionnement historique susceptible de renouveler radicalement la lecture de tel ou tel document supposé bien connu. Par ailleurs, les cadres normatifs observables dans les sociétés antiques, une fois mis au jour, paraissent sujets à bien des gauchissements, voire des transgressions. Ceux-ci rendent compte, à leur tour, de la dynamique des identités de genre qu'on ne saurait réduire à deux contenus, le masculin et le féminin. Néanmoins cette polarité reste un ordonnancement politiquement utile, permettant de hiérarchiser les individus et les comportements, et, exceptionnellement, de valoriser des caractéristiques socialement associées à un sexe ou un autre, tels l'obéissance pour les filles de leurs pères et le courage physique pour les fils de la cité.

    Abstract: There is no single volume that encompasses an integrated social and cultural history of the Sámi people from the Nordic countries and northwestern Russia. Neil Kent's book fills this lacuna. In the first instance, he considers how the Sámi homeland is defined: its geography, climate, and early contact with other peoples. He then moves on to its early chronicles and the onset of colonisation, which changed Sámi life profoundly over the last millennium. Thereafter, the nature of Sámi ethnicity is examined, in the context of the peoples among whom the Sámi increasingly lived, as well as the growing intrusions of the states who claimed sovereignty over them. The Soviet gulag, the Lapland War and increasing urbanisation all impacted upon Sámi life. Religion, too, played an important role from pre-historic times, with their pantheon of gods and sacred sites, to their Christianisation. In the late twentieth century there has been an increasing symbiosis of ancient Sámi spiritual practice with Christianity. Recently the intrusions of the logging and nuclear industries, as well as tourism have come to redefine Sámi society and culture. Even the meaning of who exactly is a Sámi is scrutinised, at a time when some intermarry and yet return to Sámi, where their children maintain their Sámi identity

    Abstract: "Despite competing with much larger imperialist neighbors in Southeast Asia, the Kingdom of Thailand--or Siam, as it was formerly known--has succeeded in transforming itself into a rival modern nation-state over the last two centuries. Recent historiography has placed progress--or lack thereof--toward Western-style liberal democracy at the center of Thailand's narrative, but that view underestimates the importance of the colonial context. In particular, a long-standing relationship with China and the existence of a large and important Chinese diaspora within Thailand have shaped development at every stage. As the emerging nation struggled against colonial forces in Southeast Asia, ethnic Chinese entrepreneurs were neither a colonial force against whom Thainess was identified, nor had they been able to fully assimilate into Thai society. Wasana Wongsurawat demonstrates that the Kingdom of Thailand's transformation into a modern nation-state required the creation of a national identity that justified not only the hegemonic rule of monarchy but also the involvement of the ethnic Chinese entrepreneurial class upon whom it depended. Her revisionist view traces the evolution of this codependent relationship through the twentieth century, as Thailand struggled against colonial forces in Southeast Asia, found itself an ally of Japan in World War II, and reconsidered its relationship with China in the postwar era"--

    Abstract: "A History of Catalan Folk Literature is the fruit of a collaborative effort between fifteen researchers from various universities and research centres who have joined forces to create a broader study of Catalan folk literature that addresses the Catalan linguistic and cultural territories in their entirety.     Abstract: How authors rendered Dakhota philosophy by literary means to encode ethical and political connectedness and sovereign life within a settler surveillance state Translated Nation examines literary works and oral histories by Dakhota intellectuals from the aftermath of the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War to the present day, highlighting creative Dakhota responses to violences of the settler colonial state. Christopher Pexa argues that the assimilation era of federal U.S. law and policy was far from an idle one for the Dakhota people, but rather involved remaking the Oyate (the Oceti sakowi? Oyate or People of the Seven Council Fires) through the encrypting of Dakhota political and relational norms in plain view of settler audiences. From Nicholas Black Elk to Charles Alexander Eastman to Ella Cara Deloria, Pexa analyzes well-known writers from a tribally centered perspective that highlights their contributions to Dakhota/Lakhota philosophy and politics. He explores how these authors, as well as oral histories from the Spirit Lake Dakhota Nation, invoke thiospaye (extended family or kinship) ethics to critique U.S. legal translations of Dakhota relations and politics into liberal molds of heteronormativity, individualism, property, and citizenship. He examines how Dakhota intellectuals remained part of their social frameworks even while negotiating the possibilities and violence of settler colonial framings, ideologies, and social forms. Bringing together oral and written as well as past and present literatures, Translated Nation expands our sense of literary archives and political agency and demonstrates how Dakhota peoplehood not only emerges over time but in everyday places, activities, and stories. It provides a distinctive view of the hidden vibrancy of a historical period that is often tied only to Indigenous survival.

With the establishment of the ducal regime in Florence in 1530, there was increasing debate about how to be a nobleman. Was fashionable clothing a sign of magnificence or a source of mockery? Was the graceful courtier virile or effeminate? How could a man dress for court without bankrupting himself? This book explores the whole story of clothing, from the tailor's workshop to spectacular court festivities, to show how the male nobility in one of Italy's main textile production centres used their appearances to project social, sexual, and professional identities. Sixteenth-century male fashion is often associated with swagger and ostentation but this book shows that Florentine clothing reflected manhood at a much deeper level, communicating a very Italian spectrum of male virtues and vices, from honour, courage, and restraint to luxury and excess.     Abstract: "Since 1824, Bahians have marked independence with a popular festival that contrasts sharply with the official commemoration of Brazil's independence on 7 September. The Dois de Julho (2 July) festival celebrates the day the Portuguese troops were expelled from Salvador in 1823, the culmination of a year-long war that gave independence a radical meaning in Bahia. Bahia's Independence traces the history of the Dois de Julho festival in Salvador, the Brazilian state's capital, from 1824 to 1900. Hendrik Kraay discusses how the festival draws on elements of saints' processions, carnivals, and civic ritual in the use of such distinctive features as the indigenist symbols of independence called the caboclos and the massive procession into the city that re-enacts the patriots' victorious entry in 1823. Providing a social history of celebration, Kraay explains how Bahians of all classes, from slaves to members of the elite, placed their stamp on the festivities and claimed recognition and citizenship through participation. Analyzing debates published in newspapers--about appropriate forms of commemoration and the nature of Bahia's relationship to Brazil--as well as theatrical and poetic representations of the festival, this volume unravels how Dois de Julho celebrations became so integral to Bahia's self-representation and to its politics.
