    Abstract: Black communities have been making major contributions to Europe's social and cultural life and landscapes for centuries. However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory. For the first time in European history, leading Black scholars and activists examine this issue – with first-hand knowledge of the eight European capitals in which they live. Highlighting existing monuments, memorials, and urban markers they discuss collective narratives, outline community action, and introduce people and places relevant to Black European history, which continues to be obscured today.

    Abstract: Looking back over the centuries, migration has always formed an important part of human existence. Spatial mobility emerges as a key driver of urban evolution, characterized by situation-specific combinations of opportunities, restrictions, and fears. This collection of essays investigates interactions between European cities and migration between the early modern period and the present. Building on conceptual approaches from history, sociology, and cultural studies, twelve contributions focus on policies, representations, and the impact on local communities more generally. Combining case-studies and theoretical reflections, the volume's contributions engage with a variety of topics and disciplinary perspectives yet also with several common themes. One revolves around problems of definition, both in terms of demarcating cities from their surroundings and of distinguishing migration in a narrower sense from other forms of short- and long-distance mobility. Further shared concerns include the integration of multiple analytical scales, contextual factors, and diachronic variables (such as urbanization, industrialization, and the digital revolution)

Rejecting preconceived ideas about slavery as static and without regional variation, it offers focused case studies spanning the late ancient period. They provide in-depth analyses of authors and works, and consider a range of factors relevant to the practice of slavery in specific geographical locations.     Abstract: This volume offers new insights into the radical shift in attitudes towards death and the dead body that occurred in temperate Bronze Age Europe. Exploring the introduction and eventual dominance of cremation, Marie-Louise Stig Sørenson and Katharina Rebay-Salisbury apply a case-study approach to investigate how this transformation unfolded within local communities located throughout central to northern Europe. They demonstrate the deep link between the living and the dead body, and propose that the introduction of cremation was a significant ontological challenge to traditional ideas about death. In tracing the responses to this challenge, the authors focus on three fields of action: the treatment of the dead body, the construction of a burial place, and ongoing relationships with the dead body after burial. Interrogating cultural change at its most fundamental level, the authors elucidate the fundamental tension between openness towards the 'new' and the conservative pull of the familiar and traditional

Im atlantischen Raum, so der Tenor der hier versammelten Beiträge, werden die inneren Widersprüche dieses Jahrhunderts mit besonderer Anschaulichkeit sichtbar, insofern sich hier Freiheit und Sklaverei, Gleichheit und Kolonialismus, Autonomie und Heteronomie kreuzen. Systematisch lesbar wird damit eine transatlantische Aufklärung, die durch die Zirkulation von Menschen, Waren, Texten und Ideen begründet wird. Die hier vorgeschlagene Perspektive stellt die Vorstellung einer monolithischen ›europäischen Aufklärung‹ infrage und weist auf, wie sehr aufklärerische Selbstbehauptung und -reflexion auf eine stete Auseinandersetzung mit dem transatlantischen ›Anderen‹ angewiesen ist, um auf diese Weise den Raum zu entfalten und den Blick auf unterschiedliche Zentren und Knotenpunkte der Aufklärung zu richten

    Abstract: "Islam and Heritage in Europe provides a critical investigation of the role of Islam in Europe's heritage. Focusing on Islam, heritage, and Europe; it seeks to productively trouble all of these terms and to throw new light on the relationships between them in various urban, national and transnational contexts. Bringing together international scholars from a range of disciplines, this volume examines heritage-making and Islam in the context of current happenings in Europe, as well as analysing past developments and future possibilities. Presenting work based on ethnographic, historical and archival research, chapters are concerned with questions of diversity, mobility, decolonisation, translocality, restitution, and belonging. By looking at diverse trajectories of people and things, this volume encompasses multiple perspectives on the relationship between Islam and heritage in Europe, including the ways in which it has played out and transformed against the backdrop of the 'refugee crisis' and other recent developments, such as debates on decolonising museums or the resurgence of nationalist sentiments.     Abstract: How was power justified in late medieval Europe? What justifications did people find convincing, and why? Based around the two key intellectual movements of the fifteenth century, conciliarism in the church and humanism, this study explores the justifications for the distribution of power and authority in fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century Europe. By examining the arguments that convinced people in this period, Joseph Canning demonstrates that it was almost universally assumed that power had to be justified but that there were fundamentally different kinds of justification employed. Against the background of juristic thought, Canning presents a new interpretative approach to the justifications of power through the lenses of conciliarism, humanism and law, throwing fresh light on our understanding of both conciliarists' ideas and the contribution of Italian Renaissance humanists

    Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert als »Zeitalter der Extreme« ist in starkem Maße durch kriegerische und genozidale Auseinandersetzungen geprägt. Die Geschichtsschreibung nahm in ihren Untersuchungen bisher jedoch mehrheitlich eine androzentrische Perspektive ein und ignorierte die in den 1980er Jahren einsetzende Forschung zu Geschlecht, Militär und Krieg. Die internationalen Beiträger*innen des Bandes widmen sich daher aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive der Geschlechterfrage in der Kriegsforschung. Ihre Analysen zu den Weltkriegen, zum Spanischen Bürgerkrieg sowie u.a. zu den Themen Mobilisierung, Wissenschaft und Kultur liefern einen wichtigen Beitrag zur geschlechtergeschichtlichen und -theoretischen Durchdringung der Kriegsgeschichte.Mit einer Einleitung von Karen Hagemann

    Abstract: It is difficult to speak about Europe today without reference to its constitutive regions-supra-national geographical designations such as "Scandinavia," "Eastern Europe," and "the Balkans." Such formulations are so ubiquitous that they are frequently treated as empirical realities rather than a series of shifting, overlapping, and historically constructed concepts. This volume is the first to provide a synthetic account of these concepts and the historical and intellectual contexts in which they emerged. Bringing together prominent international scholars from across multiple disciplines, it systematically and comprehensively explores how such "meso-regions" have been conceptualized throughout modern European history

    Abstract: Mit der Erschließung der Ozeane und der Entdeckung Amerikas begann die Globalisierung in der Frühen Neuzeit. Georg Jochum stellt dar, wie diese Entgrenzung der Welt, die in der Devise »Plus Ultra« ihren signifikanten Ausdruck fand, zum Basisparadigma der Moderne wurde. Der ambivalente Charakter der okzidentalen Zivilisation zwischen emanzipativer Weltoffenheit und kolonialer Weltbeherrschung hat hier seinen Ursprung. Auch die gegenwärtige ökologische Krise und die zunehmenden Spannungen in der Weltgesellschaft sind ferne Folgen dieser Entgrenzungsdynamik. Auf diese historische und zeitdiagnostische Analyse aufbauend werden Wege der Transformation hin zu einer zur reflexiven Selbstbegrenzung fähigen, nachhaltigeren Gesellschaft skizziert.

    Abstract: Widows are often viewed as being marginalised in society, struggling to make a living and in need of financial and other support. However, as this extensively researched and wide-ranging book reveals, widows did, in fact, engage very effectively in economic activity, often being in charge of families, households and commercial enterprises. The book outlines how extensive widowhood was; examines the provisions made for the support of widows, including in the form of marriage contracts, dowries and charitable assistance; and provides numerous examples of widows being economically active, paying their way and involving themselves energetically in society - one notable example being Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, who established a very successful company producing La Veuve Clicquot champagne. Using statistical analysis and individual case studies, the book contrasts the situation in different parts of Europe, and between rural and urban areas, and shows how provision for widows both in law and in practice evolved over time. Overall, it contributes a great deal to women's history, helping to correct the image that women were victims of male society, and to family history, showing that exceptions to the "ideal" nuclear family were very common. BEATRICE MORING is Associate Professor in the Department of Political and Economic Studies at the University of Helsinki. RICHARD WALL was a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Essex.

    Abstract: Antisemitic stereotypes of Jews as capitalists have hindered research into the economic dimension of the Jewish past. The figure of the Jew as trader and financier dominated the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But the economy has been central to Jewish life and the Jewish image in the world; Jews not only made money but spent money. This book is the first to investigate the intersection between consumption, identity, and Jewish history in Europe. It aims to examine the role and place of consumption within Jewish society and the ways consumerism generated and reinforced Jewish notions of belonging from the end of the eighteenth century to the beginning of the new millennium. It shows how the advances of modernization and secularization in the modern period increased the importance of consumption in Jewish life, making it a significant factor in the process of redefining Jewish identity.

    Abstract: Movement of people has been a key feature in the whole history of European integration. While existing literature has mostly adopted national viewpoints and a socioeconomic perspective, this book integrates these existing fragmented analyses, views them from a broader perspective and places them in the wider context of the social and demographic transformation of Europe and the political and economic narrative of continental integration. It highlights the impact made by EC/EU immigration policies on the external political and economic relations of Europe and acknowledges that pre-1989 migration from East European countries is part of European integration. By showing that migration policies and their impact on European national societies and economies cannot be fully understood without taking into account the EC framework, this book, therefore, contributes to migration studies as a whole.

    Abstract: Minderheiten sind seit dem Beitritt des Deutschen Reiches zum Völkerbund (1926) ein zentraler Bestandteil der deutschen Außenpolitik. Ihnen kommt im Prozess der Europäisierung und der Auflösung nationaler Grenzen eine wichtige Rolle zu. Wie Minderheiten sich in Europa Gehör verschaffen können, ist in hohem Maße durch die Kulturpolitik der Nationalstaaten und der EU bestimmt. Die Autoren und Autorinnen des Bandes richten ihren Blick auf die Anfänge einer modernen Minderheitenpolitik seit der Weimarer Republik, in welcher der Begriff der nationalen Minderheiten zuerst zu einem Gegenstand rechtlicher wie politischer Debatten und zu einer gesellschaftlichen "Kategorie der Moderne" wurde. Die Gründung des Völkerbundes, die Legitimierung des Selbstbestimmungsrechts der Völker und die Etablierung des Minderheitenschutzes auf internationaler Ebene bildeten den Ausgangspunkt für diese Entwicklungen.     Abstract: 〈I〉Slavery Hinterland〈/I〉 explores a neglected aspect of transatlantic slavery: the implication of a continental European hinterland. It focuses on historical actors in territories that were not directly involved in the traffic in Africans but linked in various ways with the transatlantic slave business, the plantation economies that it fed and the consequences of its abolition. The volume unearths material entanglements of the Continental and Atlantic economies and also proposes a new agenda for the historical study of the relationship between business and morality. Contributors from the US,Britain and continental Europe examine the ways in which the slave economy touched on individual lives and economic developments in German-speaking Europe, Switzerland, Denmark and Italy. They reveal how these 'hinterlands' served as suppliers of investment, labour and trade goods for the slave trade and of materials for the plantation economies, and how involvement in trade networks contributed in turn to key economic developments in the 'hinterlands'. The chapters range in time from the first, short-lived attempt at establishing a German slave-trading operation in the 1680s to the involvement of textile manufacturers in transatlantic trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. A key theme of the volume is the question of conscience, or awareness of being morally implicated in an immoral enterprise. Evidence for subjective understandings of the moral challenge of slavery is found in individual actions and statements and also in post-abolition colonisation and missionary projects.     Abstract: 25 years after the fall of the wall and ten years after the eastward expansion of the EU - these politically significant events have also fundamentally altered historical research on Eastern Europe. The extent to which the contributors to this volume have benefitted as a result of the establishment of historical cultural studies, the opening of previously sealed archives and more importantly, from a hitherto unknown freedom of movement, is shown in their urban histories: based on cultural-historical interrogations into »museification« and monumentalization, on representativeness or multiculturalism in the Eastern European urban sphere, they offer insights into the history of metropolises like Prague, Baku, Moscow or St Petersburg, and regional centers like Lviv or Irkutsk

    Abstract: From 1550 to colonial partition in the mid-1880s, trade was key to Afro-European relations on the western Slave Coast (the coastal areas of modern Togo and parts of what are now Ghana and Benin). This book looks at the commercial relations of two states which played a crucial role in the Atlantic slave trade as well as the trade in ivory and agricultural produce: Hula, known to European traders as Great or Grand Popo (now in Benin) and Ge, known as Little Popo (now in Togo). Situated between the Gold Coast to the west and the eastern Slave Coast to the east, this region was an important supplier of provisions for Europeans and the enslaved Africans they purchased. Also, due to its position in the lagoon system, it facilitated communication along the coast between the trading companies' headquarters on the western Gold Coast and their factories on the eastern Slave Coast, particularly at Ouidah, the Slave Coast's major slave port. In the 19th century, when the trade at more established ports was disrupted by the men-of-war of the British anti-slave trade squadron, the western Slave Coast became a hot-spot of illegal slave trading. Providing a detailed reconstruction of political and commercial developments in the western Slave coast, including the transition from the slave trade to legitimate commerce, this book also reveals the region's position in the wider trans-Atlantic trade network and how cross-cultural partnerships were negotiated; the trade's impact on African coastal 'middlemen' communities; and the relative importance of local and global factors for the history of a region or community. Silke Strickrodt is Research Fellow in Colonial History, German Historical Institute London. She is co-editor (with Robin Law and Suzanne Schwarz) of Commercial Agriculture, the Slave Trade and Slavery in Atlantic Africa (James Currey, 2013).

    Abstract: This title examines the ritual murder accusation (or blood libel), one of the most heinous charges against the Jews in the history of medieval antisemitism. It traces the origins to the circumstances surrounding the death of William of Norwich in 1144 and the text of the 'Life and Passion' composed by the monk Thomas of Monmouth in 1150, in the period immediately following the English civil war, the Anarchy under King Stephen, and the Second Crusade. The charge arose as the result of a trial of an indebted knight, Simon de Novers, for killing his Jewish banker Deulesalt.

    Abstract: Als Folge des Ersten Weltkriegs und den daraus resultierenden Friedensverträgen war die Bevölkerung von fünf Grenzgebieten, die bisher von mindestens zwei Nationalstaaten beansprucht wurden, dazu aufgerufen, ihre national-territoriale Zugehörigkeit durch Volksabstimmungen selbst festzulegen. In den Grenzregionen Schleswig, Ost-/Westpreußen, Kärnten, Oberschlesien und dem Burgenland sollten die Abstimmungsberechtigten in den Jahren 1920/21 sich jeweils durch ihre Stimmabgabe klar für einen der beiden zur Wahl stehenden Nationalstaaten und damit für eine nationale Zugehörigkeit entscheiden.In allen Abstimmungsregionen setzte unmittelbar nach Bekanntwerden der friedensvertraglich geregelten Volksabstimmungen eine rege Agitationsarbeit ein.In der vorliegende Arbeit wird erstmals eine vergleichende Zusammenschau von Bildpropagandamaterial aus allen fünf Abstimmungsregionen durchgeführt. Das Quellenmaterial, bestehend aus Plakaten, Postkarten, Notgeldscheinen, Illustrationen und Briefmarken, wird dabei einander gegenübergestellt und vergleichend hinsichtlich der Fragestellung analysiert, wie in bildlicher Propaganda nationale Identität konstruiert wurde.Anhand von einzelnen Motiven und Motivgruppen wird die Bildpropaganda als Träger von Diskursen analysiert. Hier zeigen sich Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten der zeitgenössischen Auffassungen von Nation und nationaler Identität.Der komparative Ansatz der Arbeit zeigt darüber hinaus, wie Bildmotive verwendet worden sind, um Identität zu konstruieren und wie unterschiedliche Formen von nationaler und regionaler Identität gegeneinander positioniert und hierarchisiert worden sind.

    Abstract: How did medieval Europeans use and change their environments, think about the natural world, and try to handle the natural forces affecting their lives? This groundbreaking environmental history examines medieval relationships with the natural world from the perspective of social ecology, viewing human society as a hybrid of the cultural and the natural. Richard Hoffmann's interdisciplinary approach sheds important light on such central topics in medieval history as the decline of Rome, religious doctrine, urbanization and technology, as well as key environmental themes, among them energy use, sustainability, disease and climate change. Revealing the role of natural forces in events previously seen as purely human, the book explores issues including the treatment of animals, the 'tragedy of the commons', agricultural clearances and agrarian economies. By introducing medieval history in the context of social ecology, it brings the natural world into historiography as an agent and object of history itself
