    Abstract: Die gesellschaftliche Betrachtung von Sterben und Tod entspricht nicht mehr den feststehenden Images, mit denen die entsprechenden Wissensbereiche bis vor wenigen Jahren assoziiert waren. Die vermeintlich ›eindeutigen‹ Bedeutungsebenen dieses Komplexes waren lange Zeit stabil genug, um die sozialwissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung zu lähmen. Seit einiger Zeit treten nun aber Diskurse hinzu, die die normativen Elemente der Bestattungskultur, den Umgang mit toten Körpern und Kremationsasche, die Etikettierungsleistung ärztlicher Diagnosen und die Bestimmung der Grenze zwischen Leben und Tod (wieder) in Frage stellen. Reale Handlungspraxen und kulturelle Vorgaben befinden sich heute in einem – durchaus produktiven – Spannungsverhältnis
    Abstract: Society's view of dying and death no longer corresponds to the fixed images with which the corresponding areas of knowledge were associated until a few years ago. For a long time, the supposedly ›unambiguous‹ levels of meaning of this complex issue were stable enough to paralyse social scientific research. For some time now, however, discourses have been emerging that (re)question the normative elements of funeral culture, the treatment of dead bodies and cremation ashes, the labelling of medical diagnoses, and the determination of the boundary between life and death. Es wird Zeit, diese architektonische und sozial immer noch wirksame Unterscheidung von unsichtbaren "Hinterhofmoscheen" und sichtbaren "Moscheeneubauten" ad acta zu legen. Sie wird der Komplexität des Phänomens in keiner Weise gerecht. Denn Muslime verstecken sich nicht in Hinterhöfen und machen sich auch nicht einfach nur durch Moscheen mit Kuppeln und Minarett in der Stadt sichtbar: Sie gehen seit Beginn der Entstehung der ersten Gebetsstätten im Migrationskontext mit ihren Architekturen komplexe Bündnisse ein. Moscheen sind fast nie nur Orte des rituellen Gebets. Sie interdisziplinär, also sozial-, kultur-, islam-, architektur- und erziehungswissenschaftlich, zu verstehen - dazu möchte das Buch einen Beitrag leisten

    Abstract: "Islam through Objects represents the state of the field of Islamic material cultural studies. With contributions from scholars of religion, anthropologists, art historians, folklorists, historians, and other disciplines, Anna Bigelow brings together a wide range of perspectives on Islamic materiality to debunk myths of Islamic aversion to material aspects of religion. Each chapter focuses on a single object in daily use by Muslims - prayer beads, coins, amulets, a cistern well, clothing, jewellery, bodily and domestic adornments - to consider both generic and particular aspects of the object in question. These narratives will engage the reader by describing and analyzing each object in terms of its provenance, materials, uses, and history, as well as the broader history, variety and uses of the object in Islamic history and cultures. Temporal, regional, and sectarian variations in the styles, uses, and theological perspectives are also considered. Framed by an introduction that assesses the various approaches to Islamic material culture in recent scholarship, Islam through Objects provides a template for the study of religion and material culture, which engages current theory, subtle and nuanced narratives, and the creative and imaginal capacities of Muslims through history."

    Abstract: "What have different ideas about sex and gender meant for people throughout the history of the Middle East and North Africa? This book traces sex and desire in Muslim cultures through a collection of chapters that span the 9th to 21st centuries. Looking at spaces and periods where sexual norms and the categories underpinning them emerge out of multiple subjectivities, the book shows how people constantly negotiate the formulation of norms, their boundaries and their subversion. It demonstrates that the cultural and political meanings of sexualities in Muslim cultures - as elsewhere - emerge from very specific social and historical contexts. The first part of the book examines how people constructed, discussed and challenged sexual norms from the Abbasid to the Ottoman period. The second part looks at literary and cinematic Arab cultural production as a site for the construction and transgression of gender norms. The third part builds on feminist historiography and social anthropology to question simplistic dichotomies and binaries. Each of the contributions shows how understanding of sexualities and the subjectivities that evolve from them are rooted in the mutually-constitutive relationships between gender and political power. In identifying the plurality of discourses on desires, the book goes beyond the dichotomy of norm and transgression to glimpse what different sexual norms have meant at different times across the Middle East."

    Abstract: Long description: Geschlechterwissen wird in und zwischen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen generiert - als Kritik an akademischer Wissensproduktion und mit dem Ziel der Transformation. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes untersuchen die Bedingungen und Möglichkeiten für intervenierendes Wissen von Geschlecht und dessen Bedeutungen für die Disziplinen Informatik, Naturwissenschaften/Biologie und Kunstwissenschaft in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland seit den 1970er Jahren. Sie fragen danach, inwiefern Teilhabe notwendige aber prekäre Voraussetzung für Veränderungen ist und welche dissidenten Praktiken entwickelt wurden. Im Zentrum der Analysen stehen Infragestellungen akademischer Strukturen und disziplinärer Grundlagen, Prozesse der Institutionalisierung und Debatten um Interdisziplinarität

    Abstract: Das Handbuch bietet einen Überblick über Ansätze, Methoden und Themenfelder einer historischen Technikanthropologie. Dies umfasst sowohl Grundbegriffe, die Vielfalt technisierter Menschenbilder, technisierte Praktiken sowie die Technisierung von Sinnen und Kompetenzen. Vorgestellt werden zudem wichtige Vertreter einer Technikanthropologie seit der Frühen Neuzeit. Mit einer interdisziplinären Herangehensweise arbeitet das Handbuch verschiedene Problematisierungen von Menschen und Maschinen, die gerade heute virulent sind, historisch und systematisch auf. Dabei steht die klassische anthropologische Frage nach dem "Menschen" in den jeweiligen Ausprägungen und Wandlungen mit Blick auf Technik im Zentrum. Diese Betrachtung geht nicht von einem einzigartigen, unveränderlichen Wesen des Menschen aus, sondern untersucht die historischen Veränderungen des Menschen durch und mit Technik. Gerade im Zeichen neuer Technologien wie der Digitalisierung und Künstlicher Intelligenz-Forschung steht das Mensch-Maschinen-Verhältnis erneut auf der Agenda.     Abstract: This handbook provides an overview of approaches to, and methods and topics on a historical anthropology of technology. This includes basic concepts, the variety of human technical concepts, technicised practices and the technicisation of senses and skills. Furthermore, it presents important representatives of an anthropology of technology since the early modern period. With its interdisciplinary approach, this volume historically and systematically approaches various problems relating to humans and machines that are currently being debated. At the centre of attention is the quintessential anthropological question of what a ‘human being’ is with respect to technology. However, this consideration does not derive from the concept of a unique, unchanging essence of man, but examines the historical changes of man through and with technology. Particularly in light of new technologies such as digitisation and artificial intelligence research, the relationship between humans and machines is once again on the agenda, in which humans and humanity seem to be the subject of discussion

    Abstract: This is the first history of Irish divorce. Spanning the island of Ireland over three centuries, it places the human experience of marriage breakdown centre stage to explore the impact of a highly restrictive and gendered law and its reform. It considers the accessibility of Irish divorce as it moved from a parliamentary process in Westminster, the Irish parliament and the Northern Ireland parliament to a court-based process. This socio-legal approach allows changing definitions of gendered marital roles and marital cruelty to be assessed. In charting the exceptionalism of Ireland's divorce provision in a European and imperial framework, the study uncovers governmental reluctance to reform Irish divorce law which spans jurisdictions and centuries. This was therefore not only a law dictated by religious strictures but also by a long-lived moral conservatism

    Abstract: Long description: A rapid development of religious popular cultures and lifestyles can be observed across the globe. This book provides unique case studies from Asia and Europe illustrating new religious practices, forms of articulation and mass mediatization, all of which render religious traditions significant for contemporary issues and concerns. The essays examine experiences of spirituality in combination with commercialization and expressive performative practices as well as everyday politics of identity.     Abstract: The post-Communist transition in Eastern Central Europe has brought about democratic reform, liberalized economies and accession to the European Union, but also the emergence of political movements that revert to antisemitic rhetoric and arguments. This volume compares the genealogies and impact of antisemitism in contemporary Poland and Hungary. Leading and emerging scholars contrast developments in both countries from the last quarter of the nineteenth century to the present, analysing the roles played by organised religion, political leaders, media and press, but also by Communist Parties. They present historical analysis as well as the results of qualitative and quantitative research on contemporary public memory, the image of the Jew, antisemitic media, political constituencies and the interplay of prejudices, specifically anti-Roma racism. A topical bibliography of research on antisemitism in post-Communist Eastern Central Europe offers pathways to further research

Vor dem Hintergrund einer Ideengeschichte von Melancholie und Depression entwickelt Konstantin Ingenkamp dazu eine eigene, kulturwissenschaftlich informierte Perspektive, die sich sowohl gegen die immer stärkere Pathologisierung als auch gegen die verbreitete These wendet, dass psychische Erkrankungen immer weiter zunehmen.Stattdessen wird Depression als ein zur Conditio humana gehörender Gemütszustand beleuchtet, der sich als Kehrseite des »Positiven Denkens« in den protestantischen Erweckungsbewegungen des 19. Jahrhunderts ebenso wiederfinden lässt wie als Gegenbegriff zur »mentalen Gesundheit« während des Kalten Krieges. Erst mit dem Boom der Psychopharmaka in der zeitgenössischen »Gesundheitsgesellschaft«, so zeigt der Autor, wird die Depression zur Volkskrankheit.
    Abstract: How and why did depression become an epidemic disease? Based on a conceptual history of melancholy and depression, Konstantin Ingenkamp develops his own perspective, which is well-founded in cultural science. It is directed against the increasing pathologizing as well as against the wide-spread thesis that mental illnesses are constantly increasing.Instead, depression is viewed as a state of mind that is part of the human condition and that can be found as the opposite of »positive thinking« in protestant awakening movements of the 19th century, and also as a counter term of »mental health« during the cold war. Only with the boom of psychotropic drugs in the contemporary »health society« does depression become an epidemic disease, as the author shows.
