    Abstract: A profound cultural shift is taking place in western societies: religion is in decline and secular worldviews are on the rise. At the same time, religion is taking more overtly political shapes and still affects our world in important, sometimes dangerous ways. This book examines two rival explanations for these trends, critiquing the popular notion that God has been 'killed' by modern science, and offering a fresh take that draws on research in the social sciences to argue that greater socio-economic equality and moral values that favour tolerance are at the heart of our collective drift away from organized faith.
    Abstract: "Across the western world, churches are emptying out and closing their doors, and more and more people are rejecting organized religion. This book addresses the causes of this decline in belief and participation in religious activities by examining two rival explanations. The first is the Enlightenment myth, which states that religious belief becomes less tenable as it is gradually replaced by a scientific worldview. This is the view promoted by a group of intellectuals known as the "new atheists" (represented most famously by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins), who in the early 2000s captured the imagination of young skeptics and ignited a movement for secularism by arguing that religion is the source of most of our social ills. Their view of religion as the antithesis of modern science is closely connected to ideological theories of social progress that work to justify social inequalities. After critiquing this ideological take on religion, a better alternative is presented: the sociological theory of secularization, which states that religious decline is a result of socio-economic development that has produced greater overall well-being and equality and shifting moral values that lead people to view religious ethics as a relic of a bygone era. The evidence on secularization suggests that only by working to achieve greater security and equality for all can we counter power and influence of organized religion"--

    Abstract: This book offers a critical analysis of global mobilities across China and Italy in history. In three periods in the twentieth century, new patterns of physical mobilities and cultural contact were established between the two countries which were either novel at the time of their emergence or impactful on subsequent periods. The first two chapters provide overviews of writings by Italians in China and by Chinese in Italy in the twentieth century. The remaining chapters cover: Republican Chinas relationships with Italy and Italian Fascist colonialism in China during the 1920s1930s; Italian travelers to China during the Cold War from the 1950s to the 1970s; migrations between China and Italy during the 2000s2010s. In analyzing these cultural mobilities, this book opens a new line of inquiry in Chinese-Italian Cultural Studies, which has been dominated by historical study, and contributes a significant case study to the scholarship on global cultural mobilities

    Abstract: Die vorliegende kumulative Arbeit untersucht, inwiefern lokale Aushandlungsprozesse im Umgang mit extrem rechten Mobilisierungen zu deren Normalisierung beitragen. Die Studie adressiert zwei Forschungsdesiderate: Erstens externalisieren viele Beiträge die extrem Rechte von städtischen Demokratien. Folglich ist die Literatur nicht in der Lage zu erfassen, wie extrem rechte Agenden und Ideologien innerhalb lokaler partizipativer Prozesse in liberalen Demokratien normalisiert werden. Zweitens sind die Akteure und Prozesse, welchen diesen lokalen Aushandlungen zugrunde liegen, nicht ausreichend untersucht. Um diese Lücken zu schließen, verbindet die Studie Theoriestränge aus der Urban Governance - Literatur mit sozialwissenschaftlichen Debatten über den Aufstieg der extrem Rechten. Der methodische Rahmen der Arbeit besteht aus einem qualitativen Forschungsdesign in Form einer explorativen Einzelfallstudie in der Stadt Cottbus. Die Analyse zeigt, dass das Narrativ der Externalisierung in dreierlei Hinsicht eine falsche Dichotomie zwischen der extremen Rechten und lokalen Aushandlungsprozessen schafft: Erstens ignoriert es, dass deliberative Prozessen zwar das Versprechen auf Demokratisierung innewohnt, dieses aber durch bestehende gesellschaftliche Machtverhältnisse durchkreuzt wird, die Näherböden für autoritäre Mobilisierung bieten können. Zweitens übersieht es die Verflechtung zwischen Rassismus und den städtischen Institutionen, die auf extrem rechte Mobilisierung reagieren, und oftmals Anknüpfungspunkte für extrem rechte Ideologien bieten. Drittens wird argumentiert, dass dies auf den lokalen Staat als umkämpftes Terrain hinweist.
    Abstract: Englische Version: This doctoral dissertation explores to what extent local negotiations of far-right contestations contribute to the latter’s normalisation. The project is prompted by the crux that even though the central role of cities and local participatory planning processes in countering far-right contestations is widely acknowledged, far-right contestations have hardly been challenged. It seeks to address two scholarly blind spots: First, mainstream accounts engaging with the question of how municipalities deal with far-right contestations have largely externalised the far right from urban democracy. Consequently, the current literature is not able to grasp how far-right agendas and ideologies can indeed be normalised within local participatory processes. Second, the actors and processes involved in the local negotiation of far-right contestations remain understudied. To fill these gaps, the cumulative dissertation connects discussions on urban governance with recent debates on the rise of the far right. The methodological framework of this thesis consists of a qualitative, explorative single-case study in the city of Cottbus, Germany. The analysis reveals that the liberal narratives of externalisation create a false dichotomy between far-right contestations and local negotiations in liberal democracies in a threefold way. First, they ignore how far-right contestations can be strengthened within traditional deliberative processes, as their promise of equal participation for all citizens is juxtaposed with the inability of such processes to re-negotiate the power relations aggravating the social inequalities giving rise to the far right in the first place. Second, by externalising the divisiveness propagated by far-right contestations, they overlook the interconnectedness between racism and the institutions governing cities, which offers points of contact for far-right ideology.     Abstract: In the following dialogue, Anika Keinz, the invited discussant at the panel »Struggles over Europe« forming part of the »Troubling Gender« conference, and Paweł Lewicki talk about how race, gender, and sexuality are not only entangled in the East-West dynamic but co-constitute the East-West dichotomy too. They discuss racial relations and states of morality, in grappling with the question of what exactly race-critical studies can contribute to both the improved analysis of this dichotomy and to the examination of developments in Europe: What can we observe when looking, for example, at gender and sexual politics in Poland from a race-critical perspective and what can this tell us about nationalisms? Doing so, they take up the discussion Lewicki started, together with Randi Elin Gressgård and Rafał Smoczyński, in the special issue of Intersections. East European Journal of Society and Politics »Struggles over Europe. Postcolonial East/West Dynamics of Race, Gender and Sexuality« (2020, 6/3). This special issue explores the dynamics pertaining to (racialized) gender and sexuality, as well as their local expressions, and asks how they are embedded in broader dynamics and discourses on Europe, Europeanization, and the transformation of (il)liberal states. Lewicki and Keinz then continue their conversation and pick up on certain aspects that came up during the panel discussion. They reflect on how categories such as »race,« »gender,« and »sexuality« contribute to the reproduction of various understandings of »Europe« and »European modernity« and to the (self-)produced notions of »East« and »West« respectively.
    Abstract: Im folgenden Dialog sprechen Anika Keinz, die als Diskutantin des Panels "Struggles over Europe" bei der Tagung "Troubling Gender" eingeladen war, und Paweł Lewicki, einer der Organisatoren dieses Panels, darüber, wie Rasse, Geschlecht und Sexualität nicht nur in der Ost-West-Dynamik verwoben sind, sondern auch die Ost-West-Dichotomie mitkonstituieren. Sie sprechen über rassialisierte Relationen und moralische Konstellationen, während sie sich mit der Frage auseinandersetzen, was genau kritische race studies zur besseren Analyse dieser Dichotomie sowie zur Untersuchung der Entwicklungen in Europa beitragen können: Was können wir beobachten, wenn wir z.B. die Geschlechter- und Sexualpolitik in Polen aus einer rassismuskritischen Perspektive betrachten und was kann uns das über Nationalismen sagen? Damit knüpfen sie an die Diskussion an, die Lewicki gemeinsam mit Randi Elin Gressgård und Rafał Smoczyński in der Sonderausgabe von Intersections.     Abstract: Examines why and how cultural encounters between East Asia and Europe are framed as failures Opens up fresh perspectives on intercultural encounters by focusing on failures as a paradigm Argues that a focus on failure helps to uncover the normative perspectives and expectations of intercultural encountersEstablishes that intercultural encounters add a valuable new perspective to the emerging field of failure studiesOften, the story of encounters between Asia and the West has been told as one of success, of cross-fertilization, reciprocal stimulation and an exchange of commodities and knowledge. Yet, the history of East-West encounters is riddled with prominent examples of misunderstandings, ignorance, unrealistic expectations or unbridgeable cultural differences. Bringing together scholars working across Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, English Studies and French Studies, this book presents new perspectives on such instances by theorizing epistemologies of failure. Providing examples from different periods and disciplines, it reveals how culturally informed expectations and biases, performative and linguistic practices and imaginative horizons specific to the cultures involved shape notions of failure and success. Case studies range from first encounters in the early modern period to contemporary novels and focus on actual or imaginary encounters between East Asia and Western European cultures

    Abstract: What are the future perspectives for Jews and Jewish networks in contemporary Europe? Is there a new quality of relations between Jews and non-Jews, despite or precisely because of the Holocaust trauma? How is the memory of the extermination of 6 million European Jews reflected in memorial events and literature, film, drama, and visual arts media? To what degree do European Jews feel as integrated people, as Europeans per see, and as safe citizens? An interdisciplinary team of historians, cultural anthropologists, sociologists, and literary theorists answers these questions for Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Germany. They show that the Holocaust has become an enduring topic in public among Jews and non-Jews. However, Jews in Europe work self-confidently on their future on the "old continent," new alliances, and in cooperation with a broad network of civil forces. Non-Jewish interest in Jewish history and the present has significantly increased over decades, and networks combatting anti-Semitism have strengthened

    Abstract: "If anyone still questions the power of visual images to propel political action, the constant stream of videos circulating on social media-police killings of Black men and women, prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, celebrating participants in the January 2021 Capitol uprising-have captured the attention of a nation. But exactly what those videos purport to show is often a matter of dispute. Interpretation is in the eyes and mind of the beholder. Deep disagreement to the point of physical violence both reflects the contested events these videos depict and threatens to further entrench political and social divisions. Visual images amplify, accelerate, and even generate vastly different storylines; they show us who and what we are. Whether we can or should believe what we see in visual media is a quandary as old as media itself. Because what we think we see "moves" us-emotionally and ethically-the stakes have always been high. Those stakes are, if anything, even higher now given the impact of our visually saturated media landscape, created by the confluence of digital technologies, smart phones equipped with digital cameras, and social-media platforms. Seeing and Believing focuses on the challenges and opportunities that this complex media landscape presents to us. It examines how these technologies are deliberately designed to influence what we see and how we interpret it. Seemingly godlike-all-seeing-in its reach and persuasive power, we underestimate our own power to resist. Untangling the often unconscious and unacknowledged normative cultural biases that have shaped the media ecosystem (marked by what philosopher George Yancy calls "the white gaze") and learning to see, think, feel, believe, and act differently can be greatly assisted by viewing our worship of technology as a theology and dismantling it with the tools of theology itself"--

    Abstract: In post-war Europe, protest was everywhere. On both sides of the Iron Curtain, from Paris to Prague, Milan to Wroclaw, ordinary people took to the streets, fighting for a better world. Their efforts came to a head most dramatically in 1968 and 1989, when mass movements swept Europe and rewrote its history. In the decades between, Joachim C. Häberlen argues, new movements emerged that transformed the nature of protesting. Activism moved beyond traditional demonstrations, from squatting to staging 'happenings' and camping out at nuclear power plants. People protested in the way they dressed, the music they listened to, the lovers they slept with, the clubs where they danced all night. New movements were born, notably anti-racism, women's liberation, gay liberation, and environmentalism. And protest turned inward, as activists experimented with new ways of living and feeling, from communes to group therapy, in their efforts to live a better life in the here and now. Some of these struggles succeeded, others failed. But successful or not, their history provides a glimpse into roads not taken, into futures that did not happen. The stories in Häberlen's book invite us to imagine different futures; to struggle, to fail, and to try again. In a time when we are told that there are no alternatives, they show us that there could be another way.

    Abstract: This book analyzes conflicting notions of identity and belonging in contemporary Europe. Addressing the creation, negotiation, and (re)use of diverse spaces and places of belonging, the book examines their fascinating complexities in the context of a changing Europe. Taking an innovative interdisciplinary approach, the volume examines renegotiations of belonging played out through cultural encounters with difference and change, in diverse public spaces and contested places.     Abstract: "Konkurrenz" ist ein Schlüsselwort (post)moderner Gesellschaften. Doch waren Agonalität und Wettbewerb auch in der Frühen Neuzeit allgegenwärtig, in Form von Rangkonflikten, Ehrenhändeln, der Konkurrenz zwischen den Konfessionen, dem Ringen um Ressourcen oder der Rivalität von Kolonialmächten. Zwischen der Dynamik von Konkurrenzbeziehungen und ihrer gerade den Aspekt des Wettkampfs oft ausblendenden Wahrnehmung auf Seiten der Akteure bestand ein Spannungsbogen. Ihm widmen sich die in diesem Band dokumentierten Beiträge der 13. Arbeitstagung der AG Frühe Neuzeit im Verband der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands, die im September 2019 in Rostock stattfand. Sie befassen sich damit, wie in vormodernen Gesellschaften Konstellationen der Rivalität und des Wettbewerbs bewertet wurden, wie Konkurrenz mehr oder weniger erfolgreich eingehegt wurde, welche Dynamiken sie in Gang setzte und auf welchen Feldern sie sich teils verdeckt, teils offen entfalten konnte. In dieser Perspektive stellt die Beschäftigung mit Konkurrenz einen Schlüssel zum Verständnis der Normen- und Werteordnung der Frühen Neuzeit dar.

    Abstract: Over the last few decades, the politics of gender and sexuality have turned extremely hostile across Europe. Long fought for rights and antidiscriminatory politics have come under heavy attack, while Gender Studies programs have been banned. In tandem, feminist arguments are being instrumentalized by right-wing movements so as to cement nationalist projects and racist positions. This turmoil regarding the politics of gender in Europe has become even more complex as gender, sexuality, and race find themselves used as markers of both progress and backwardness within the postcolonial, postsocialist European landscape reproducing old and creating new hierarchies within the societies and between them. Based on the 2021 conference “Troubling Gender: New Turbulences in the Politics of Gender in Europe,” organized by the Commission on Gender Research and Queer Anthropology of the German Association for European Ethnology and Empirical Cultural Analyses, this issue of Berliner Blätter hence assembles an array of analytical papers as well as polyvocal written discussions seeking to make sense of these developments as well as of their local and regional articulations and effects. The issue brings together queer/feminist voices and analyses from the Eastern and Western European contexts; furthermore, it examines the possibilities for solidarity across different positionalities and engages with diverse histories of struggle. The issue presents analyses informed by gender and queer theory, as mostly based on ethnographic research, and thus ultimately allows us to better understand the current conjuncture of the politics of gender and sexuality in and of Europe. With this, it partakes in the ongoing feminist and queer struggles to build a better future for all those concerned.
    Abstract: Im letzten Jahrzehnt haben sich Politiken rund um Geschlechter und Sexualitätspolitik in ganz Europa äußerst feindselig entwickelt. Erkämpfte Rechte und eine antidiskriminatorische Politik sind massiv unter Beschuss geraten, Studiengänge der Geschlechterforschung wurden verboten. Gleichzeitig werden feministische Argumente von rechtsgerichteten Bewegungen instrumentalisiert, um nationalistische Projekte und rassistische Positionen zu zementieren. Noch weiter kompliziert wird die Situation dadurch, dass Geschlecht, Sexualität und Rasse in der postkolonialen, postsozialistischen europäischen Landschaft als Marker für Fortschritt und Rückständigkeit dienen, wodurch alte Hierarchien innerhalb der Gesellschaften und zwischen ihnen reproduziert und neue geschaffen werden. Ausgehend von der Konferenz „Troubling Gender: Neue Turbulenzen in der Geschlechterpolitik in Europa“, organisiert 2021 von der Kommission für Geschlechterforschung und Queere Anthropologie in der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Europäische Ethnologie und Empirische Kulturwissenschaft (DGEKW), bringt die Ausgabe der Berliner Blätter queere und feministische Stimmen und Analysen aus dem ost- und westeuropäischen Kontext zusammen. Gemeinsam versuchen sie, diese Entwicklungen, ihre lokalen und regionalen Artikulationen und Auswirkungen zu verstehen. Neben den geschlechter- und queertheoretisch fundierten Analysen, die sich größtenteils auf ethnografische Forschungen stützen, ergründen polyvokale, dialogisch geschriebene Beiträge die Möglichkeiten der Solidarität über verschiedene Positionen hinweg und zeigen die verschiedenen Geschichten von gender- und queerpolitischen Kämpfen und Epistemologien in Europa.     Abstract: Starting from a fishbowl discussion which has taken place at the conference, this paper discusses what can be gained from thinking across genderqueer theories and anthropological Europeanization research. It argues that thinking queerly includes a skepticism towards identitarian and normative understandings of Europe, as well as an ethnographic attention to that which emerges in the gaps and cracks of Europeanization, while keeping in mind the ways in which institutions working in the name of Europe generate heterogeneous experiences resulting in unequal and differentially distributed, multiple Europes. ‘Queering Europe’ oscillates between an emphasis on the central role of the sexual and the gendered in imaginations of Europe and destabilizing notions of Europe in a more general sense and is as such closely related to post-/decolonial approaches. This analytical move has three dimensions to it: Firstly, queering Europe aims at deconstructing hegemonic imaginaries of Europe. Secondly, it makes visible the pluralistic and fragmented nature of Europe(s) and the ambivalent and sometimes unforeseen consequences processes of Europeanization are accompanied by. Thirdly, queering Europe can be envisioned as a way of imagining and thinking Europe through a “critical utopianism” (Mbembe 2019) that puts solidarity center stage. In all three dimensions, an ethnography informed by decolonial critiques as well as by proposals for queering methodologies constitutes our chosen epistemological tool to gain deeper insights into queering Europe as a mode of knowledge production and political vision.
    Abstract: Ausgehend von einer Fish-Bowl-Diskussion, die während der Konferenz stattfand, diskutieren wir in unserem Beitrag, was durch ein Denken zwischen gender_queer Theorien und anthropologischer Europäisierungsforschung gewonnen werden kann. Wir argumentieren, dass queeres Denken eine Skepsis gegenüber identitären und normativen Verständnissen von Europa beinhalten muss sowie eine ethnographische Aufmerksamkeit dafür, was in den Lücken und Rissen der Europäisierung auftaucht. Gleichzeitig gilt es im Auge zu behalten, wie Institutionen, die im Namen Europas arbeiten, heterogene Erfahrungen erzeugen, die zu ungleichen und unterschiedlich verteilten, multiplen Europas führen. Insofern korrespondiert dieser Zugang mit post-/dekolonialen Ansätzen in der Anthropologie. Queering Europe oszilliert zwischen einer Aufmerksamkeit für die zentrale Rolle, die Sexualität und Geschlecht in den Imaginarien von Europa spielen, und der Destabilisierung von Vorstellungen von Europa in einem allgemeineren Sinn. Drei Dimensionen dieses analytischen Ansatzes werden diskutiert: Erstens zielt queering Europe darauf ab, hegemoniale Vorstellungen von Europa zu dekonstruieren; zweitens macht es den multiplen und fragmentierten Charakter Europas sowie die ambivalenten und manchmal unvorhersehbaren Konsequenzen sichtbar, die Europäisierungsprozesse mit sich bringen; und drittens kann queering Europe als Möglichkeit gesehen werden, Europa durch die Linse eines "kritischen Utopismus" (Mbembe 2019) zu betrachten und Solidarität in den Mittelpunkt der Überlegungen zu stellen. In allen drei Dimensionen stellt ethnographisches Arbeiten, das von dekolonialen Kritiken sowie von Vorschlägen zum Queeren von Methoden geprägt ist, das erkenntnistheoretische Werkzeug dar, um tiefere Einblicke in queering Europe als eine Art der Wissensproduktion wie der politischen Vision zu erhalten.

    Abstract: Black communities have been making major contributions to Europe's social and cultural life and landscapes for centuries. However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory. For the first time in European history, leading Black scholars and activists examine this issue – with first-hand knowledge of the eight European capitals in which they live. Highlighting existing monuments, memorials, and urban markers they discuss collective narratives, outline community action, and introduce people and places relevant to Black European history, which continues to be obscured today.
