    Abstract: "Konkurrenz" ist ein Schlüsselwort (post)moderner Gesellschaften. Doch waren Agonalität und Wettbewerb auch in der Frühen Neuzeit allgegenwärtig, in Form von Rangkonflikten, Ehrenhändeln, der Konkurrenz zwischen den Konfessionen, dem Ringen um Ressourcen oder der Rivalität von Kolonialmächten. Trotzdem war agonale Konkurrenz bis zum 18. Jahrhundert moralisch anrüchig. Zwischen der Dynamik von Konkurrenzbeziehungen und ihrer gerade den Aspekt des Wettkampfs oft ausblendenden Wahrnehmung auf Seiten der Akteure bestand ein Spannungsbogen. Ihm widmen sich die in diesem Band dokumentierten Beiträge der 13. Arbeitstagung der AG Frühe Neuzeit im Verband der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands, die im September 2019 in Rostock stattfand. Sie befassen sich damit, wie in vormodernen Gesellschaften Konstellationen der Rivalität und des Wettbewerbs bewertet wurden, wie Konkurrenz mehr oder weniger erfolgreich eingehegt wurde, welche Dynamiken sie in Gang setzte und auf welchen Feldern sie sich teils verdeckt, teils offen entfalten konnte. In dieser Perspektive stellt die Beschäftigung mit Konkurrenz einen Schlüssel zum Verständnis der Normen- und Werteordnung der Frühen Neuzeit dar.

    Abstract: This volume presents a series of reflections on modes of communication in the Bronze Age Aegean, drawing on papers presented at two round table workshops of the Sheffield Centre for Aegean Archaeology on 'Technologies of Representation? and ?Writing and Non-Writing in the Bronze Age Aegean'. Each was designed to capture current developments in these interrelated research areas and also to help elide boundaries between ?science-based? and ?humanities-based? approaches, and between those focused on written communication (especially its content) and those interested in broader modes of communication. Contributions are arranged thematically in three groups: the first concerns primarily non-written communication, the second mainly written communication, and the third blurs this somewhat arbitrary distinction.

Welche Rechte Geflüchtete haben und welche Pflichten ihnen gegenüber bestehen, ist umkämpft. Der Band analysiert zentrale Probleme dieser moralischen, rechtlichen und politischen Debatten und der sozialen Praktiken des Umgangs mit Geflüchteten. Zugleich führt er in Grundbegriffe der aktuellen Flucht- und Flüchtlingsforschung ein und stellt dafür den Begriff des Flüchtlings selbst in den Fokus der interdisziplinären Untersuchung.

Sie berühren nicht allein die philosophischen, ethischen, rechtlichen, politischen und sozialen Aspekte der Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und Tieren, sondern auch die methodischen Herausforderungen und theoretischen Grundlagen ihrer Erforschung. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage, ob und inwieweit sich die anthropozentrisch geprägte Denkstruktur der Kulturwissenschaften um Perspektiven und Forschungsansätze erweitern lässt, die Tieren sowie ihren Rechten, Bedürfnissen und Interessen stärker gerecht werden. Indem die Human-Animal Studies den Blick für die enge Verflochtenheit menschlicher und tierlicher Existenzweisen öffnen, schaffen sie wichtige Voraussetzungen dafür, unser bisheriges Verhältnis zu ihnen grundsätzlich zu überdenken und zugleich praktisch zu verändern.

    Abstract: "Sacred Matter: Animacy and Authority in the Americas examines animism in Pre-Columbian America, focusing on how objects and places played central social roles in practices that expressed and sanctified political authority in the Andes, Amazon, and Mesoamerica. Pre-Columbian peoples staked claims to their authority when they animated matter by giving life to grandiose buildings, speaking with deified boulders, and killing valued objects. Likewise, things and places often animated people by demanding labor, care, and nourishment. In these practices of animation, things were cast as active subjects, agents of political change, and representatives of communities. People were positioned according to specific social roles and stations: workers, worshippers, revolutionaries, tribute payers, or authorities. Such practices manifested political visions of social order by defining relationships between people, things, and the environment. Contributors to this volume present a range of perspectives (archaeological, art historical, ethnohistorical, and linguistic) to shed light on how Pre-Columbian social authority was claimed and sanctified in practices of transformation and transubstantiation-that is, practices that birthed, converted, or destroyed certain objects and places, as well as the social and natural order from which these things were said to emerge"--

    Abstract: Als in den 1960er Jahren die »Hippies« aufkamen, erkannten darin manche eine »neue Jugendbewegung«. Tatsächlich fanden sich im alternativen Milieu der 1970er und 1980er Jahre nicht wenige Praktiken, politische Ideen und habituelle Muster, die an die Lebensreformbewegung der Jahrhundertwende erinnerten: freie Sexualität und Freikörperkultur, Siedlung auf dem Lande, alternative Haartracht und Bekleidung, Kritik der modernen Gesellschaft, Streben nach Gemeinschaft, politischer Radikalismus. Zugleich unterschieden sich die Kontexte dieser Kritik: Urbanisierung und industrielle Moderne auf der einen, postindustrieller und, auf der kulturellen Ebene, postmoderner »Strukturbruch« auf der anderen Seite. Die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger untersuchen zum einen, inwieweit sich diese Phänomene ähneln oder unterscheiden, und zum anderen fragen sie nach den Verbindungslinien personeller oder institutioneller Art sowie den Rezeptionsmustern der Lebensreform im Alternativmilieu. When the “hippies” emerged in the 1960s, contemporary observers spoke of a “new youth movement”, relating them to the Jugendbewegung of the early 20th century. In fact, there were quite a few practices, political ideas, and habitual patterns in the alternative milieu of the 1970s and 1980s, which seemed to be familiar from the Lebensreform (life reform) movement of the turn of the century: free sexuality and nudism, settlement in the countryside, alternative hairstyles and clothing, criticism of modern society, striving for community, and political radicalism. At the same time, the contexts of this critique differed: urbanization and industrial modernity on the one hand, postindustrial and, on the cultural level, postmodern “structural break” on the other. The volume examines the extent to which the two phenomena were similar, but also looks at differences, personal or institutional links and patterns of reception.

    Abstract: Although "entanglement" has become a keyword in recent German history scholarship, entangled studies of the postwar era have largely limited their scope to politics and economics across the two Germanys while giving short shrift to social and cultural phenomena like gender. At the same time, historians of gender in Germany have tended to treat East and West Germany in isolation, with little attention paid to intersections and interrelationships between the two countries. This groundbreaking collection synthesizes the perspectives of entangled history and gender studies, bringing together established as well as upcoming scholars to investigate the ways in which East and West German gender relations were culturally, socially, and politically intertwined.

    Abstract: Recent research has demonstrated that, in the Roman, Late Antique, Early Islamic and Medieval worlds, glass was traded over long distances, from the Eastern Mediterranean, mainly Egypt and Israel, to Northern Africa, the Western Mediterranean and Northern Europe. 'Things that travelled', a collaboration between the UCL Early Glass Technology Research Network, the Association for the History of Glass and the British Museum, aims to build on this knowledge. Covering all aspects of glass production, technology, distribution and trade in Roman, Byzantine and Early Medieval/Early Islamic times, including studies from Britain, Egypt, Cyprus, Italy and many others, the volume combines the strengths of the sciences and cultural studies to offer a new approach to research on ancient glass. By bringing together such a varied mix of contributors, specialising in a range of geographical areas and chronological time frames, this volume also offers a valuable contribution to broader discussions on glass within political, economic, cultural and historical arenas

    Abstract: The 'racial state' has become a familiar shorthand for the Third Reich, encapsulating its raison d'être, ambitions, and the underlying logic of its genocidal violence. The Nazi racial state's agenda is generally understood as a fundamental reshaping of society based on a new hierarchy of racial value. However, this volume argues that it is time to reappraise what race really meant under Nazism, and to question and complicate its relationship to the Nazis' agenda, actions, and appeal. Based on a wealth of new research, the contributors show that racial knowledge and racial discourse in Nazi Germany were far more contradictory and disparate than we have come to assume. They shed new light on the ways that racial policy worked and was understood, and consider race's function, content, and power in relation to society and nation, and above all, in relation to the extraordinary violence unleashed by the Nazis

    Abstract: Until now, there has been no direct and extensive engagement with the category of religion from liberal political philosophy. Over the last thirty years or so, liberals have tended to analyze religion under proximate categories such as 'conceptions of the good' (in debates about neutrality) or 'culture' (in debates about multiculturalism). US constitutional lawyers and French political theorists both tackled the category of religion head-on (under First Amendment jurisprudence and the political tradition of laicite, respectively) but neither of these specialized national discourses found their way into mainstream liberal political philosophy. This is somewhat paradoxical because key liberal notions (state sovereignty, toleration, individual freedom, the rights of conscience, public reason) were elaborated as a response to 17th Century European Wars of Religion, and the fundamental structure of liberalism is rooted in the western experience of politico-religious conflict. So a reappraisal of this tradition - and of its validity in the light of contemporary challenges - is well overdue. This book offers the first extensive engagement with religion from liberal political philosophers. The volume analyzes, from within the liberal philosophical tradition itself, the key notions of conscience, public reason, non-establishment, and neutrality. Insofar as the contemporary religious revival is seen as posing a challenge to liberalism, it seems more crucial than ever to explore the specific resources that the liberal tradition has to answer it

    Abstract: Movement of people has been a key feature in the whole history of European integration. While existing literature has mostly adopted national viewpoints and a socioeconomic perspective, this book integrates these existing fragmented analyses, views them from a broader perspective and places them in the wider context of the social and demographic transformation of Europe and the political and economic narrative of continental integration. It highlights the impact made by EC/EU immigration policies on the external political and economic relations of Europe and acknowledges that pre-1989 migration from East European countries is part of European integration. By showing that migration policies and their impact on European national societies and economies cannot be fully understood without taking into account the EC framework, this book, therefore, contributes to migration studies as a whole.

    Abstract: Minderheiten sind seit dem Beitritt des Deutschen Reiches zum Völkerbund (1926) ein zentraler Bestandteil der deutschen Außenpolitik. Ihnen kommt im Prozess der Europäisierung und der Auflösung nationaler Grenzen eine wichtige Rolle zu. Wie Minderheiten sich in Europa Gehör verschaffen können, ist in hohem Maße durch die Kulturpolitik der Nationalstaaten und der EU bestimmt. Die Autoren und Autorinnen des Bandes richten ihren Blick auf die Anfänge einer modernen Minderheitenpolitik seit der Weimarer Republik, in welcher der Begriff der nationalen Minderheiten zuerst zu einem Gegenstand rechtlicher wie politischer Debatten und zu einer gesellschaftlichen "Kategorie der Moderne" wurde. Die Gründung des Völkerbundes, die Legitimierung des Selbstbestimmungsrechts der Völker und die Etablierung des Minderheitenschutzes auf internationaler Ebene bildeten den Ausgangspunkt für diese Entwicklungen. Zeitgenössische volkskundliche Untersuchungen trugen neben vielen anderen Wissenschaften maßgeblich zur Kodifizierung des Konzeptes Minderheiten sowie zur Fremd- und Selbstethnisierung bei.

    Abstract: "Over the past fifteen or twenty years, scholarship on the Third Reich has increasingly recognized the centrality of racial thought to the formulation of policy in a wide array of fields. During the 1980s, scholars began to depict the Third Reich as, in Michael Burleigh and Wolfgang Wippermann's resonant phrase, a 'racial state.' Moving away from an exclusive focus on anti-Semitism, this racial turn broadened the understanding of Nazi racial policy. It expanded awareness of the range of Nazi victims, incorporating, for instance, the murder of the mentally and physically handicapped, and also the sterilization and incarceration of people considered 'asocial,' into a comprehensive account of Nazi biopolitics. This approach also broached the question of how broad the support for Nazi racial policies was, interrogating the extent to which ordinary Germans cooperated in the projects of the racial state, for instance, as mothers of 'Aryan' children or as supervisors of 'racially inferior' forced laborers. While the benefits of this approach have been significant, it has become increasingly clear in the last few years that the racial state paradigm has begun to obscure as much as it reveals about the reality of the Third Reich. First, this approach tends to reify race as an epistemological category, presenting it as more coherent and comprehensive than it in fact was. The Nazis themselves were aware of the internal tensions and contradictions that plagued any effort to articulate a coherent and comprehensive racial 'science.' Second, the ongoing salience of alternative categories of identity in the Third Reich (ethnic, völkisch, religious, class-based) is difficult to explain within the racial state paradigm. Third, the racial turn blurs the tensions between, on the one hand, specifically racial ideas and policies and, on the other hand, broader traditions of domination and empire-building that acquired at most a superficial racial gloss during the Third Reich. Questions of military necessity or economic advantage coexisted with biopolitical projects"--From German Historical Institute website
