    Abstract: Since its beginnings in Paris in the mid-19th century, the idea of bohemia, an urban community of artists and intellectuals living outside bourgeois norms, has been a potent trope of artistic identity. It was here that the notion of an unconventional, free-spirited life, precarious yet filled with idealism, was codified and romanticized. Bohemia: History of an Idea, 1950 – 2000 shows the continuities and differences between the scenes and subcultures of the second half of the twentieth century, when the mainstream began to appropriate and thereby erode a way of life predicated on its rejection. Nonetheless, as an alternative to conformity the bohemian idea has exerted an enduring fascination. Through works by 39 artists, including Alice Neel, PeterHujar, John Deakin, David Wojnarowicz, Ed van der Elsken, Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, William Gedney, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Nan Goldin, Zhang Huan and Wolfgang Tillmans, the publication explores the diversity of expressions in various cities in Europe, North America and Asia and shows that the bohemian idea continues to galvanize and inspire

    Abstract: "In Fugitive Time, Matthew Omelsky theorizes the embodied experience of time in twentieth- and twenty-first-century black artforms from across the world.     Abstract: Die im Band versammelten Beiträge stellen die Geschichte queerer Lebensentwürfe dar - von ersten Emanzipationsbewegungen um die Jahrhundertwende über Selbstermächtigungsversuche in der Weimarer Republik bis hin zu der Zerstörung queerer Subkulturen unter dem nationalsozialistischen Regime und der fortdauernden Diskriminierung von LGBTIQ-Personen in der Nachkriegszeit. Seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert traten immer mehr Menschen selbstbewusst für die Anerkennung queerer Lebensweisen ein. Diese Pionierinnen bildeten Kollektive, verschafften sich Gehör und stellten dominante Geschlechterkategorien politisch, wissenschaftlich und künstlerisch infrage.     Abstract: Accompanying a groundbreaking exhibition originating at the Baltimore Museum of Art, this book captures the extraordinary influence of hip hop, which has driven innovations in music, visual and performing arts, fashion, and technology and grown into a global phenomenon since its emergence in the 1970s. It features approximately 70 objects by both established and emerging artists, design houses, streetwear icons and musicians working in a wide range of mediums to demonstrate hip hop’s proliferation from the street to the runway, the studio to the museum gallery, and countless sites in between. The exhibition also explores how hip hop has and continues to challenge structures of power, dominant cultural narratives, and political and social systems of oppression.

    Abstract: Die Ausstellung „Gemeinsam sind wir unerträglich“ (ab 8. Dezember 2023 in der Berliner Gethsemanekirche) und der sie begleitende Katalog erzählen erstmalig die Geschichte der unabhängigen Frauenbewegung der DDR in einer Gesamtschau. Versammelt werden dabei zahlreiche ostdeutsche Stimmen: Zeitzeuginnen blicken zurück, Historiker*innen führen in das Thema ein und vermitteln aktuelle Bezüge. Zahlreiche Dokumente, Fotos und Interviews zeigen, wie sich Anfang der 1980er Jahre die ersten Frauengruppen gründeten. Von Beginn an kritisierten viele dieser Gruppen die Situation von Frauen in der DDR und zogen die staatliche Doktrin von der verwirklichten Gleichberechtigung der Frauen in Zweifel. Am Ende der DDR entfaltete sich eine landesweit agierende Bewegung. Im demokratischen Aufbruch der Jahre 1989 und 1990 saßen ihre Akteur*innen an den Runden Tischen und forderten eine geschlechtergerechtere Gesellschaft ein.

    Abstract: La mostra "Gli ebrei, i Medici e il Ghetto di Firenze" ha un doppio valore, storico e culturale. I secoli di vita del ghetto rappresentano il capitolo centrale della storia della presenza ebraica a Firenze, caratterizzato da norme di segregazione ed al contempo simbolo di una forma di "inclusione" ufficiale nel tessuto civico di Firenze: il ghetto si trovava di fronte al Mercato Vecchio (oggi piazza della Repubblica), allora cuore pulsante del commercio cittadino. Il ghetto fu uno strumento di oppressione ma anche, paradossalmente un luogo ove si permise la vita e la crescita della comunità. Si tratta senz'altro di un periodo la cui conoscenza, nonostante la demolizione e la cancellazione della memoria fisica dei luoghi, è necessaria per comprendere dinamiche e caratteristiche del rapporto fra la minoranza ebraica e la città. Compongono il catalogo una corposa sezione di saggi, le schede delle cento opere in mostra e gli schemi e le planimetrie urbanistiche del ghetto di Firenze

    Abstract: La coiffure et les poils humains, au même titre que les vêtements, les bijoux et les accessoires, participent depuis des siècles à la construction des apparences. À la frontière entre la mode et la représentation du corps, le sujet ne laisse personne indifférent. Dans la culture occidentale, le cheveu hirsute autant que l'excès de poils ont souvent été associés au diable, à l'animal et à l'homme sauvage. Si bien que pendant des siècles la femme et l'homme civilisés ont dû peigner, dompter et parfois même dissimuler leur toison. Parce que le poil est un matériau corporel qui peut être transformé de mille et une manières - étiré, coupé, complété, coloré, orné, caché ou exhibé -, il est un élément essentiel de la mise en scène de soi qui permet d'afficher l'adhésion à une mode, une conviction, une contestation et est porteur de nombreuses significations, telles la féminité, la virilité, la négligence, etc. Quelques noms de coiffures célèbres - à la Fontanges, à la Titus, à la garçonne, à l'iroquoise, etc. - révèlent que les cheveux sont eux aussi l'objet de véritables phénomènes de mode, porteurs de codes sociaux et culturels que les contemporains de chaque époque savent décrypter. De la fin du Moyen Âge à nos jours, ce livre aborde plusieurs thèmes inhérents à l'histoire de la coiffure (cheveux peignés, coupés, ornés ; perruques, postiches, calvitie ; coloration), sans oublier les questions liées à la pilosité faciale (visages imberbes, barbes, moustaches, sourcils) et à la pilosité corporelle (torse, jambes, pubis, aisselles, épilation).     Abstract: This book examines the involvement of African American artists in the New Deal art programs of the 1930s. Emphasizing broader issues informed by the uniqueness of Black experience rather than individual artists' works, Mary Ann Calo makes the case that the revolutionary vision of these federal art projects is best understood in the context of access to opportunity, mediated by the reality of racial segregation.Focusing primarily on the Federal Art Project (FAP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Calo documents African American artists' participation in community art centers in Harlem, in St. Louis, and throughout the South. She examines the internal workings of the Harlem Artists' Guild, the Guild's activities during the 1930s, and its alliances with other groups, such as the Artists' Union and the National Negro Congress. Calo also explores African American artists' representation in the exhibitions sponsored by WPA administrators and the critical reception of their work. In doing so, she elucidates the evolving meanings of the terms race, culture, and community in the interwar era. The book concludes with an essay by Jacqueline Francis on Black artists in the early 1940s, after the end of the FAP program.Presenting essential new archival information and important insights into the experiences of Black New Deal artists, this study expands the factual record and positions the cumulative evidence within the landscape of critical race studies.     Abstract: In a twentieth century during which modern art largely abandoned beauty as its imperative, a group of Black artists from Washington, DC, made beauty the center of their art making. This book highlights these influential artists, including David C. Driskell, Sam Gilliam, Lois Mailou Jones, and Alma Thomas, in the context of what Jeffrey C. Stewart describes as the Washington Black Renaissance. Vibrant histories of key District institutions and the city's communities of educators, critics, and collectors animate a nuanced consideration of the evolution of an aesthetic dialectic from the 1920s up to the present day. The fifteen essays in the volume are grounded by voices from a live artist panel at the National Gallery of Art in 2017, which included Lilian Thomas Burwell, Floyd Coleman, David C. Driskell, Sam Gilliam, Keith Morrison, Martin Puryear, Sylvia Snowden, and Lou Stovall

    Abstract: Revolusi! explores the history of the Indonesian struggle for independence between 1945 and 1949. Central to this are the fighters, artists, diplomats, politicians, journalists, men, women and children, who experienced the revolution first hand. Dutch and Indonesian authors show how the ideal of a free Indonesia was fervently pursued; how it was fought over, how negotiations took place, how propaganda was carried out and how the revolution changed people’s lives. In this way Revolusi! presents a range of personal and collective experiences, told from multiple points of view: from Indonesian and Dutch perspectives as well as those of the groups and individuals in between, with an eye towards the international power arena. The contemporary works of art, historical objects, propaganda posters, films, photographs and archival documents that accompany these stories testify to a turbulent past.

Cook, Torkwase Dyson, Theaster Gates Jr., Allison Janae Hamilton, Leslie Hewitt, Steffani Jemison, Robert Pruitt, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, and Carrie Mae Weems. The artists investigate their connections to the Deep South through familial stories of perseverance, self-determination, and self-reliance and consider how this history informs their working practices. Essays by Kiese Laymon, Jessica Lynne, Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts, and Willie Jamaal Wright explore how the Great Migration continues to reverberate today in the public and private spheres and examine migration as both a historical and a political consequence, as well as a possibility for reclaiming agency

    Abstract: "Organized around a single object—the marble bust Why Born Enslaved! by French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux—Fictions of Emancipation: Carpeaux Recast is the first exhibition at The Met to examine Western sculpture in relation to the histories of transatlantic slavery, colonialism, and empire. Created in the wake of American emancipation and some twenty years after the abolition of slavery in the French Atlantic, Why Born Enslaved! was shaped by the enduring popularity of antislavery imagery, the development of nineteenth-century ethnographic theories of racial difference, and France’s colonialist fascination with Africa. The exhibition will explore the sculpture’s place within these contexts. Featuring more than thirty-five works of art in sections unfolding around Carpeaux’s sculpture, Fictions of Emancipation will offer an in-depth look at portrayals of Black enslavement, emancipation, and personhood with an aim toward challenging the notion that representation in the wake of abolition constitutes a clear moral or political stance. Important works by Josiah Wedgwood, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, Charles Cordier, Edmonia Lewis, Louis-Simon Boizot, and others will show how Western artists of the nineteenth century engaged with the Black figure as a political symbol and site of exoticized beauty, while contemporary sculptures by Kara Walker and Kehinde Wiley will connect the dialogue around Carpeaux’s bust to current conversations about the legacies of slavery in the Western world.     Abstract: "Il volume offre un primo contributo a un tema poco indagato della storia dell'Italia settentrionale : la presenza, fra Cinquecento e Ottocento, di persone orginarie del continente africano. La ricerca svolta su dipinti, sculture e opere a stampa fornisce una testimonianza diretta del loro ruolo nella società, della loro vita caratterizzata spesso da stenti e umiliazioni derivanti dalla schiavitù, ma a volte anche da percorsi di riscatto e perfino di successo personale. Il racconto si articola in sezioni dedicate alle diverse modalità di raffigurazione delle presenze africane - ora considderate per il loro ruolo storico o morale, ora per il loro valore mitico o leggendario, fra stereotipi e storie vere - e si chiude con i lavori di Theophilus Imani, ricercatore visivo italiano di origine ghanese, che attraverso i suoi dittici fotografici evidenzia il contrasto fra l'iconografia classica occidentale e la rappresentazione del corpo nero nella contemporaneità."

    Abstract: "Skin Crafts discusses multiple artists from global contexts who employ craft materials in works that address historical and contemporary violence. These artists are deliberately embracing the fragility of textiles and ceramics to evoke the vulnerability of human skin and - in so doing - are demanding visceral responses from viewers. Drawing on a range of theories including affect theory, material feminism, skin studies, phenomenology and global art history, the book illuminates the various ways in which artists are harnessing the affective power of craft materials to address and cope with violence. Artists from Mexico, Africa, China, the Netherlands and Indigenous artists based in the unceded territory known as Canada are examined in relation to one another to illuminate the connections and differences across their bodies of work. Es war der euphorische Aufbruch einer Bewegung, die glaubte, die Trennung zwischen Kunst und Alltagsleben auflösen und den öffentlichen Raum zu einem Gesamtkunstwerk umgestalten zu können. - »BITTE LEBN« ist die einzigartige und aus einer aktivistischen Perspektive geschriebene Geschichte und fotografische Dokumentation dieser Bewegung, von urbaner Kunst und Subkultur in Berlin zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts. Das reich illustrierte Buch fragt aber auch nach den Grenzen künstlerischer Aktionsformen, die Gefahr laufen, selbst zur Marke und zum Standortfaktor im Wettbewerb der Metropolen zu werden.

    Abstract: Dès ses origines au 18e siècle, le tourisme a suscité de nombreuses critiques. Il incarnerait un double négatif du voyage: ses adeptes parcourraient le globe sans autre but que leur plaisir immédiat, nivelant les diversités culturelles, créant des mondes factices, creusant les inégalités sociales et détruisant les ressources naturelles.Cultivé dans la littérature, la production scientifique et les médias, cet antagonisme traduit pourtant un jugement de valeur. En focalisant sur les travers de l'industrie touristique, il élude trop souvent les raisons qui poussent aujourd'hui plus d'un milliard de personnes à sillonner la planète. Il masque aussi tout un pan des interactions entre visiteurs et visités, notamment des phénomènes de revivalisme culturel, d'inventions, de résistance et d'affirmation.L'exposition Le mal du voyage invite à questionner l'homogénéité du champ touristique. Un parcours en douze salles aborde autant de pratiques et d'imaginaires contrastés: projets de moralisation, sens cachés du farniente plagiste, quêtes de santé mentale et physique, appétit du monde, réactions autochtones face à l'engorgement des villes, mises en image de la nature, confessions de backpackers attirés par l'interdit, fascination pour les confins, productions de nouvelles esthétiques et blues de retour, aboutissant à formuler sans cesse de nouveaux projets de départ. Les tourismes offrent ainsi matière à une réflexion passionnante sur la condition et la mobilité humaine dans ce premier quart de 21e siècle

    Abstract: One hundred years after the founding of the École Coloniale Supérieure in Antwerp, the adjacent Middelheim Museum invites Sandrine Colard, researcher and curator, to conceive an exhibition that probes silenced histories of colonialism in a site-specific way. For Colard, the term Congoville encompasses the tangible and intangible urban traces of the colony, not on the African continent but in 21st-century Belgium: a school building, a park, imperial myths, and citizens of African descent. In the exhibition and this adjoining publication, the concept Congoville is the starting point for 15 contemporary artists to address colonial history and ponder its aftereffects as black flâneurs walking through a postcolonial city.00Due to the multitude of perspectives and voices, this book is both a catalogue and a reference work comprised of artistic and academic contributions.
