    Abstract: Sabine Exner-Krikorian untersucht in dieser Studie den Diskurs über die gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe in Deutschland von 1998 bis 2017. Sie geht der Frage nach, wie zeitgenössische religiöse, politische und gesellschaftliche Akteur*innen um die Deutungshoheit von Ehe wetteifern. Im Detail wird gezeigt, dass die Diskursakteur*innen in diesem Aushandlungsprozess die Prämisse einer angenommenen Moderne, die Dichotomie religiös/säkular sowie Narrative von und über Religion(en) als diskursive Strategien einsetzen. Eingebettet ist die Analyse in eine historische Rekonstruktion der Ehe seit der Reformation als Deutungs- und Machtkampf politischer und religiöser Akteur*innen. Mit einem zeit-, akteurs- und arenaspezifischen Ansatz verknüpft die Autorin methodologisch die Wissenssoziologische Diskursanalyse (WDA) nach Reiner Keller mit einem religionswissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisinteresse.

    Abstract: Der Lebensalltag von Frauen in der Prostitution ist gekennzeichnet durch gesellschaftliche Stigmatisierung und Ausgrenzung. Die vorliegende biografische und ethnografische Studie gibt Aufschluss über die Motivlagen für den Einstieg und den komplexen Verlauf der Prostitutionstätigkeit, wobei die Grenzen zwischen Freiwilligkeit und Zwangskontexten fließend sind. Professionelle Beratung in Form von Streetwork und Einzelfallhilfe bieten Perspektiven für einen Ausstieg aus dem Prostitutionsmilieu. Die Autorin Julia Wege ist Leiterin der Beratungsstelle ,,Amalie" für Frauen in der Prostitution sowie Lehrbeauftragte für Methoden der Sozialen Arbeit an der SRH Hochschule Heidelberg. .

    Abstract: In seiner empirisch fundierten Studie untersucht Stefan E. Hößl Zusammenhänge zwischen Antisemitismus und Religiösem bei Jugendlichen, die sich als Musliminnen und Muslime definieren. Der Autor lässt eine rekonstruktive Analysehaltung zum Tragen kommen und fragt dabei, inwiefern Religiöses – fernab einer bloßen religiösen Selbstverortung der Jugendlichen – in ihrem Denken und Wahrnehmen einen Niederschlag findet. Auf der Basis der Auswertung qualitativ-narrativer und Leitfaden-Interviews arbeitet er zwei kontrastierende Konstellationen heraus. Aus seinen Ergebnissen leitet der Autor Reflexionen für die antisemitismuskritische Bildungsarbeit ab.

    Abstract: Encounters, networks, identities and diversity are at the core of the history of Buddhism. They are also the focus of Buddhist Encounters and Identities across East Asia , edited by Ann Heirman, Carmen Meinert and Christoph Anderl. While long-distance networks allowed Buddhist ideas to travel to all parts of East Asia, it was through local and trans-local networks and encounters, and a diversity of people and societies, that identities were made and negotiated.     Abstract: Michail Logvinov stellt das weit verbreitete Verständnis des Salafismus als Vorstufe zum Terrorismus oder gar als "ideologisches Fundament des Islamischen Staates" in Frage. Die via Radikalisierungsdiskurs hergestellte Kausalität gehört auf den Prüfstand, während es eines Paradigmenwechsels in der Radikalisierungsforschung bedarf. Der persönlichkeitsbezogene Radikalisierungsdiskurs ist nicht imstande, prospektiv aufzuzeigen, unter welchen Umständen die gefährdeten Personen gefährlich werden. Als performativer Sicherheitsdiskurs bewirkt die Radikalisierungsforschung jedoch, dass die Gefährdeten im Sinne des Risikoparadigmas zur Gefahr bzw. zu "Gefährdern" erklärt werden. Zugleich mangelt es am Verständnis religiöser Zusammenhänge und Diskurse im zeitgenössischen Dschihadismus.​

    Abstract: In Mandarins and Heretics , Wu Junqing explores the denunciation and persecution of lay religious groups in late imperial (14th to 20th century) China. These groups varied greatly in their organisation and teaching, yet in official state records they are routinely portrayed as belonging to the same esoteric tradition, stigmatised under generic labels such as “White Lotus” and “evil teaching”, and accused of black magic, sedition and messianic agitation. Wu Junqing convincingly demonstrates that this “heresy construct” was not a reflection of historical reality but a product of the Chinese historiographical tradition, with its uncritical reliance on official sources.     Abstract: Michail Logvinov stellt das weit verbreitete Verständnis des Salafismus als Vorstufe zum Terrorismus oder gar als "ideologisches Fundament des Islamischen Staates" in Frage. Die via Radikalisierungsdiskurs hergestellte Kausalität gehört auf den Prüfstand, während es eines Paradigmenwechsels in der Radikalisierungsforschung bedarf. Der persönlichkeitsbezogene Radikalisierungsdiskurs ist nicht imstande, prospektiv aufzuzeigen, unter welchen Umständen die gefährdeten Personen gefährlich werden. Als performativer Sicherheitsdiskurs bewirkt die Radikalisierungsforschung jedoch, dass die Gefährdeten im Sinne des Risikoparadigmas zur Gefahr bzw. zu "Gefährdern" erklärt werden. Zugleich mangelt es am Verständnis religiöser Zusammenhänge und Diskurse im zeitgenössischen Dschihadismus.​

    Abstract: Until quite recently, the term Diaspora (usually with the capital) meant the dispersion of the Jews in many parts of the world. Now, it is recognized that many other groups have built communities distant from their homeland, such as Overseas Chinese, South Asians, Romani, Armenians, Syrian and Palestinian Arabs. To explore the effect of exile of language repertoires, the article traces the sociolinguistic development of the many Jewish Diasporas, starting with the community exiled to Babylon, and following through exiles in Muslim and Christian countries in the Middle Ages and later. It presents the changes that occurred linguistically after Jews were granted full citizenship. It then goes into details about the phenomenon and problem of the Jewish return to the homeland, the revitalization and revernacularization of the Hebrew that had been a sacred and literary language, and the rediasporization that accounts for the cases of maintenance of Diaspora varieties

    Abstract: In Borrowed Place: Mission Stations and Local Adaption in Early Twentieth-Century Hunan Riika-Leena Juntunen creates a microhistorical narrative around the establishment, reception, and development of Lizhou protestant stations during the turbulent years of popular nationalism and early communist activity. The book examines the changing place identity around the stations from political, religious, ritual, cultural, and gendered perspectives, revealing a Chinese semi-religious community with varying motivations and in constant dialogue with its surroundings. The group developed its own normative code and hierarchy, and it offered both economic and religious benefits according to local models. Yet the developing political situation also meant it had to solve the question of anti-foreignism to be able to continue its existence

    Abstract: Wenig wurde bislang über die erkenntnistheoretische Fundierung der Grounded Theory in der pragmatischen Sozialphilosophie und die daraus resultierenden Konsequenzen für das Verständnis der methodologischen Konzeption wie der praktischen Verfahren geschrieben. Der Band schließt diese Lücke, indem das Erkenntnismodell, ausgehend von den Arbeiten von C.S. Peirce, J. Dewey, G.H. Mead und W. James, vorgestellt und den Spuren nachgegangen wird, die dieses Modell als Geltungsbegründung in der Methodologie der Grounded Theory hinterlassen hat. Dabei geht der Text auch auf die gravierenden methodologischen Unterschiede zwischen der von Anselm L. Strauss geprägten und der von Barney G. Glaser vertretenen Variante von Grounded Theory ein und beschäftigt sich mit wesentlichen Weiterentwicklungen einer pragmatistischen Grounded Theory im Kontext postmodernen Denkens.

    Abstract: "„Religion und Politik“ wurde spätestens mit den jüngsten Revolutionen im arabischen Raum ein zentrales Thema für die Demokratisierungsforschung. Wie beeinflussen religiöse Akteure Demokratisierung? Welche Faktoren bedingen ihre Einflussnahme? Der vorliegende Band bietet erste Antworten auf diese Fragen. Hierfür wird ein theoretisch-konzeptionelles Analyseraster zur Untersuchung der Rolle religiöser Akteure im Regimewandel entwickelt. In keiner der behandelten jungen mehrheitlich christlichen, christlich-orthodoxen oder muslimischen Demokratien haben religiöse Akteure das Ergebnis des jeweiligen Transformationsprozesses bestimmt. Sie haben durch ihre politische und gesellschaftliche Einflussnahme aber zu Prozessen der Erosion autoritärer Herrschaft und zur Demokratisierung beigetragen. Die Möglichkeiten religiöser Akteure auf Demokratisierung einzuwirken, hängen vor allem von ihrer Organisationsform und der formalrechtlichen sowie de facto Stellung gegenüber dem politischen Regime ab.     Abstract: Soziologische Zeitdiagnosen thematisieren gegenwärtig vermehrt das Religiöse. Während die frühen Diagnosen der modernen Gesellschaft fast einhellig eine Säkularisierung der Religion diagnostizieren und damit das Religiöse aus dem Zentrum der Analyse verdrängen, sehen sich gegenwärtige Theorien der Modernität häufig durch das Religiöse herausgefordert und stellen es folglich in den Mittelpunkt ihrer Bemühungen um eine Diagnose der modernen Gesellschaft. Neben diesem wirkmächtigen, eher an gesellschaftstheoretischen und zeitdiagnostischen Fragen orientierten Diskurs entwickelt sich in den letzten Jahren eine soziologische Theorierichtung, die eng am Begriff der Praxis ausgerichtet ist und vor allem in ihrer postkolonialen Ausformung universellen Gesellschaftsdiagnosen höchst skeptisch gegenübersteht. In diesem Sinne werden gesellschaftliche Praktiken und Praxisformen auch ohne den Anspruch untersucht, die Analyseergebnisse in eine allgemein ansetzende Gesellschaftstheorie einzubetten.

    Abstract: Der Forschungsverbund „Desintegrationsprozesse" beschäftigte sich mit den Gefahren sozialer Desintegration und den daraus resultierenden Gefährdungen und negativen Folgen für das Leben in einer modernen Gesellschaft. Die einzelnen Projekte haben eine Fülle von empirischen Ergebnissen hervorgebracht, die für die Integrations-Desintegrations-Problematik von Bedeutung sind. In dem vorliegenden Band geht es v.a. um die Wirksamkeit unterschiedlicher Intergrationsmechanismen. Dabei wird danach gefragt, ob und inwiefern bislang bewährte Integrationsmechanismen aufgrund innerer und äußerer gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen versagen, ob neue Integrationsmechanismen an ihre Stelle treten, welche Bindungskräfte nationale Gesellschaften unter Globalisierungsbedingungen überhaupt noch zusammen halten und welche Art von Integration heutzutage benötigt wird bzw. noch zeitgemäß ist. Die einzelnen Beiträge verstehen sich als Anregungen, um über Integrationsmöglichkeiten, Integrationsnotwendigkeiten und Integrationspotenziale neu nachzudenken. In stärker theoretischer Perspektive wird zudem eruiert, unter welchen Bedingungen sich die Integrationschancen verbessern und die Desintegrationsgefahren vermindern.

    Abstract: In Organizing Muslims and Integrating Islam in Germany , Kerstin Rosenow-Williams analyzes the challenges faced by Islamic organizations in Germany since the beginning of the 21st century. Outlining the expectations German political actors have of Islamic organizations and the internal interests of these organizations, the author illustrates that organizational response strategies involve patterns not only of adaptation, but also of decoupling and protest. The study introduces an innovative research framework based on organizational sociology and provides empirical insights into three major Islamic umbrella organizations (DITIB, IGMG, ZMD) and their relationships with other actors. The comprehensive analysis of the German institutional environment and related developments in Islamic organizations makes this study highly relevant to scholars and politicians, as well as the general public

    Abstract: This volume focuses on the interface between Mongolian and Tibetan cultures and aims to create a platform to encourage the development of new forms of scholarship across geographical and disciplinary boundaries. This forum lets new materials emerge and brings to the fore a variety of different approaches to studying Mongolian and Tibetan cultures and societies. The papers in this volume deal not only with the substantial Mongolian contribution to and engagement with Tibetan Buddhism, but also with multiple readings of shared history and religion, reconstruction of traditions, shifting ethnic boundaries and the broader political context of the Mongolian-Tibetan relationship

    Abstract: Performing Islam takes as its main focus the rich array of ceremonial activities that shape and inform the lives of circles of women in south Tehran. Based on anthropological fieldwork, the book describes and analyses rituals that mark religious anniversaries and life course events in Iran today. Arguing that the ritual performances are powerful forums where ideas develop, and where rules, symbols and discourses are contested, this book discusses the values and beliefs underpinning gender constructions in a rapidly changing and complex society. The ambiguous metaphorical language of the rituals is examined, revealing how gender ideologies are projected and renewed, but also challenged, destabilized and ridiculed. Thus the rituals provide possibilities for self-expression, innovation and incremental change. This study goes beyond questions of meaning and culture to interrogate the dynamics of gender performance as products of power and politics

    Abstract: The development of Early Christian rituals in connection with death and burial has so far not sufficiently been explored. Volp’s study focuses on the surviving literary sources—both pagan and Christian—, together with inscriptions and other archaeological remains while taking into account recent results from science and humanities. A summary of death and ritual in the ancient Mediterranean religions is followed by detailed analyses of the Christian sources from the 2nd to the 5th century. Thus, basic developments are being discovered which led to and accompanied the forming of Christian rituals, such as ritual purity or the social structure of family and society. Being the first such interdisciplinary approach, it also represents the first monographic work on the topic since 1941

    Abstract: This volume contains a collection of studies describing and analyzing stereotypes of women in the religions of Ancient Israel and Mesopotamia, and in Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Medieval Christianity, Islam, Indian Sufism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Tibetan religions, and modern Neopaganism. In all these traditions the stereotypes are based on generalizations, which are socially, culturally or religiously legitimized, and which seem to have a lasting influence on society's conceptions of women. They represent oversimplified opinions, which are, however, regularly challenged by the women who are affected by them. In all traditions the stereotypes are ambiguous, either because women have challenged their validity, or because historical developments in society have reshaped them. They influence public opinion by emphasizing dominant views, as a strategy to restrain women and to keep them controlled by the rules and morals of a male-dominated society
