    Abstract: Barry Buzan proposes a new approach to making International Relations a truly global discipline that transcends both Eurocentrism and comparative civilisations. He narrates the story of humankind as a whole across three eras, using its material conditions and social structures to show how global society has evolved. Deploying the English School's idea of primary institutions and setting their story across three domains - interpolity, transnational and interhuman - this book conveys a living historical sense of the human story whilst avoiding the overabstraction of many social science grand theories. Buzan sharpens the familiar story of three main eras in human history with the novel idea that these eras are separated by turbulent periods of transition. This device enables a radical retelling of how modernity emerged from the late 18th century. He shows how the concept of 'global society' can build bridges connecting International Relations, Global Historical Sociology and Global/World History.

    Abstract: Auf einer indonesischen Insel fällt eine Öllampe zu Boden, kurz danach begehen niederländische Soldaten ein Massaker an den Inselbewohnern.Wie hängen diese beiden Geschehnisse zusammen und was geschah danach? Mit dieser Frage beginnt Amitav Ghosh seine Recherche auf den Spuren der Muskatnuss. Heute alltägliches Gewürz, galt sie im 17. Jahrhundert als Luxusgut - allein eine Handvoll davon reichte aus, um einen Palast zu erbauen -, denn die seltene Frucht wuchs nur auf jener Insel, die niederländische Truppen vornehmlich deshalb in Besitz nahmen, um das Handelsmonopol für die Niederländische Ostindien-Kompanie zu sichern. Während Amitav Ghosh die Reise der Muskatnuss nachzeichnet, veranschaulicht er eindrucksvoll die Mechanismen von Kolonialismus und Ausbeutung der Einheimischen sowie der Natur durch westliche Länder. Mitreißend stellt er dabei die Verbindung geschichtlicher Entwicklungen mit aktuellen Realitäten her, verkettet niederländische Stillleben und die Nomenklatur nach Linné mit der Black-Lives-Matter-Bewegung, der Covid-Pandemie und der Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, um zu zeigen, dass der heutige Klimawandel in einer jahrhundertealten geopolitischen Ordnung verwurzelt ist, die vom westlichen Kolonialismus und seiner mechanistischen Weltsicht - die Erde als bloßem Ressourcenlieferant für die Menschheit - geschaffen wurde

    Abstract: Berlin is increasingly emerging as a hub of Arab intellectual life in Europe. In this first study of Arab culture to zoom in on the thriving metropolis, the contributors shed light on the dynamics of transformation with Arabs as agents, subjects, and objects of change in the spheres of politics, society and history, gender, demographics and migration, media and culture, and education and research. It brings together authors from inter- and multidisciplinary fields and backgrounds and invites the readers into a much-needed conversation on contemporary transformations. Hanan Badr is a professor and chair for public spheres and inequalities at the Department of Communication, Universität Salzburg, Austria, and AGYA alumna. Her work focuses on global inequalities and communication, comparing media systems, activism and media, diversifying communication research, and how globalization and digitization transform journalism. She won awards including the Kluge Fellowship at the Library of Congress and the DAAD Scholarship Award. Nahed Samour is post doc researcher at the Law & Society Institute at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She works on public law in Germany, (the history of) international and Islamic law and investigates the role of religion, race, and gender in law.

    Abstract: "Viewing knowledge as travelling between sites, rather than flowing like currents through them or diffusing out from them, the contributors to this collection stress the human intention which shapes and drives how knowledge is processed, mobilized, and repurposed to serve differing and uneven interests, constraints, and environments. The chapters consider both what knowledge travels and how it travels across borders of varying permeability. They home in on a vast range of platforms and objects of knowledge, from tangible commodities--like hybrid wheat seeds, penicillin, Robusta coffee, naval weaponry, and high performance computers--to the more conceptual apparatuses of telecommunications, statistics, and food sovereignty. Moreover, this volume decenters the Global North in its focus, tracking how knowledge travels in all directions across the borders of Mexico, India, Portugal, Guinea-Bissau, the Soviet Union, China, Angola, and Palestine and the West Bank, as well as the US and the UK.     Abstract: Wie prägten die globalen Integrationsvorgänge des „langen 19. Jahrhunderts“ die Angehörigen einer Hamburger Kaufmannsfamilie? Inwiefern entstand bei ihnen ein globales Bewusstsein? Dank eines an Selbstzeugnissen reichen Familienarchivs erforscht die vorliegende Studie diese Fragen aus einer akteurszentrierten Perspektive im Rahmen einer Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte der Globalisierung. Anhand des Konzepts der Translokalität analysiert sie die Auswirkungen der Globalisierungsprozesse auf die Praktiken, Wahrnehmungen und Zugehörigkeiten der in Hamburg, Bordeaux und Singapur aktiven Kaufmannsfamilie Meyer. Sie zeigt, dass die Meyer primär „translokal“ handelten und dachten. Indem sie auf die Diskrepanz zwischen der zunehmenden Bedeutung des Globalen und der begrenzten Wahrnehmung des globalen Charakters der Integrationsprozesse aufgrund dieses Vorrangs des Lokalen hindeutet, trägt sie zur schärferen Konturierung des Bildes der Erfahrungen der Globalisierungsprozesse durch europäische bürgerliche Eliten bei.

    Abstract: Collaborative Damage is an experimental ethnography of Chinese globalization that compares data from two frontlines of China's global intervention-Sub-Saharan Africa and Inner/Central Asia. Based on fieldwork on Chinese infrastructure and resource-extraction projects in Mozambique and Mongolia, the book provides new empirical insights into neo-colonialism and Sinophobia in the Global South. The core argument in Collaborative Damage is that the different participants in the globalization processes studied-local workers and cadres, Chinese managers and entrepreneurs, and three Danish anthropologists-are intimately linked in paradoxical partnerships of mutual incomprehension. We call this "collaborative damage," which crucially refers not only to the misunderstandings and conflicts observed by us in the field, but also to our own failure to agree about how to interpret these data. Via in-depth case studies and tragi-comical tales of friendship, antagonism, irresolvable differences, and carefully maintained indifferences across disparate Sino-local worlds in Africa and Asia, Collaborative Damage tells a much larger story of Chinese globalization in the twenty-first century

    Abstract: Der kosmopolitische Traum von einer grenzenlosen Welt hat in den letzten Jahren tiefe Risse bekommen. Aber war er überhaupt jemals realistisch? Steffen Mau zeigt, dass Grenzen im Zeitalter der Globalisierung von Anbeginn nicht offener gestaltet, sondern zu machtvollen Sortiermaschinen umgebaut wurden. Während ein kleiner Kreis Privilegierter heute nahezu überallhin reisen darf, bleibt die große Mehrheit der Weltbevölkerung weiterhin systematisch außen vor. Während die Mobilität von Menschen über Grenzen hinweg in den letzten Jahrzehnten stetig zunahm und Grenzen immer offener schienen, fand gleichzeitig eine in Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit unterschätzte Gegenentwicklung statt. Vielerorts ist es zu einer neuen Fortifizierung gekommen, zum Bau neuer abschreckender Mauern und militarisierter Grenzübergänge. Grenzen wurden zudem immer selektiver und - unterstützt durch die Digitalisierung - zu Smart Borders aufgerüstet. Und die Grenzkontrolle hat sich räumlich massiv ausgedehnt, ja ist zu einer globalen Unternehmung geworden, die sich vom Territorium ablöst. Der Soziologe Steffen Mau analysiert, auf welche Weise und mit welchen Mitteln die neuen Sortiermaschinen Mobilität und Immobilität zugleich schaffen: Für erwünschte Reisende sollen sich Grenzen wie Kaufhaustüren öffnen, für andere sollen sie fester denn je verschlossen bleiben. Nirgends tritt das Janusgesicht der Globalisierung deutlicher zutage als an den Grenzen des 21. Jahrhunderts. The study of medieval and early modern Portugal shows limited rights of women and patriarchal constraints.     Abstract: In the three decades since the end of the Cold War, global leaders have been integrating the world's economy, transport and communications, breaking down borders in the hope of making war impossible. In doing so, they have unwittingly created a formidable arsenal of weapons for new kinds of conflict and the motivation to keep fighting. Rising tensions in global politics are not a bump in the road - they are part of the paving.Troublingly, we are now seeing rising conflict at every level, from individuals on social media all the way up to nation-states in entrenched stand-offs. The past decade has seen a new antagonism between the US and China; an inability to co-operate on global issues such as climate change or pandemic response; and a breakdown in the distinction between war and peace, as overseas troops are replaced by sanctions, cyberwar, and the threat of large migrant flows. As a leading authority on international relations, Mark Leonard has been inside many of the rooms where our futures, at every level of society, are being decided - from the Facebook HQ and facial recognition labs in China to meetings in presidential palaces and at remote military installations. In seeking to understand the ways that globalisation has broken its fundamental promise to make our world safer and more prosperous, Leonard explores how we might wrest a more hopeful future from an age of unpeace.

    Abstract: Der kosmopolitische Traum von einer grenzenlosen Welt hat in den letzten Jahren tiefe Risse bekommen. Aber war er überhaupt jemals realistisch? Steffen Mau zeigt, dass Grenzen im Zeitalter der Globalisierung von Anbeginn nicht offener gestaltet, sondern zu machtvollen Sortiermaschinen umgebaut wurden. Während ein kleiner Kreis Privilegierter heute nahezu überallhin reisen darf, bleibt die große Mehrheit der Weltbevölkerung weiterhin systematisch außen vor. Während die Mobilität von Menschen über Grenzen hinweg in den letzten Jahrzehnten stetig zunahm und Grenzen immer offener schienen, fand gleichzeitig eine in Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit unterschätzte Gegenentwicklung statt. Vielerorts ist es zu einer neuen Fortifizierung gekommen, zum Bau neuer abschreckender Mauern und militarisierter Grenzübergänge. Grenzen wurden zudem immer selektiver und – unterstützt durch die Digitalisierung – zu Smart Borders aufgerüstet. Und die Grenzkontrolle hat sich räumlich massiv ausgedehnt, ja ist zu einer globalen Unternehmung geworden, die sich vom Territorium ablöst. Der Soziologe Steffen Mau analysiert, auf welche Weise und mit welchen Mitteln die neuen Sortiermaschinen Mobilität und Immobilität zugleich schaffen: Für erwünschte Reisende sollen sich Grenzen wie Kaufhaustüren öffnen, für andere sollen sie fester denn je verschlossen bleiben. Nirgends tritt das Janusgesicht der Globalisierung deutlicher zutage als an den Grenzen des 21. Jahrhunderts

Ferner ergänzen sie die bislang verhaltene deutschsprachige Diskussion um internationale Perspektiven. Der Sammelband besteht aus einem einleitenden Teil und drei inhaltlich gegliederten Teilen: Die beiden einführenden Beiträge fächern die Themengebiete und Fragestellungen auf, die aus der Verknüpfung von Sicherheitsstudien und Geschlechterstudien hervorgehen. Im ersten inhaltlichen Teil des Bandes werden die Herausforderungen einer feministischen Perspektive auf Sicherheitsfragen aufgrund struktureller, vor allem politisch-ökonomischer Analysen deutlich. The contributing authors are emerging Chinese scholars who apply and respond to Fenggang Yang's tricolor market theory of religion in China: the red, black, and gray markets for legal, illegal, and ambiguous religious groups, respectively.
