Die Beiträge gehen dem im Zusammenhang mit den damit verbundenen Begriffen der Balance und des Metrums nach, wobei sie weitergehende theoretische Perspektiven formulieren, die selbst in der Musikwissenschaft ein Desiderat sind.
    Abstract: This volume demonstrates that a richer notion of spatiotemporal organization in the arts and beyond can allow contouring, especially in the interaction of different disciplines. Central to this is the concept of rhythm, which is meaningful for various artistic disciplines as well as history and cultural studies. The contributions follow up on the related concepts of balance and of meter, whereupon they formulate further theoretical perspectives which are a desideratum even in musicology.

    Abstract: Wie verändert sich afrikanische Kirchenmusik, wenn sie aufgeschrieben wird? Wie gelingt es Dorfchören, Lieder mündlich zu überliefern? Im Mittelpunkt dieses Buches steht das Werk des Kameruner Dorfpfarrers Elias E. Ngole (1913-2005). Ausgehend von der britischen Tonic Sol-fa Solmisationsschrift hat er eine Notation für seine Lieder entwickelt. Der Autor rekonstruiert das System dieser Notenschrift und analysiert die Techniken der mündlichen Übermittlung, die vor allem durch eine spezialisierte Gestik gesichert wird. Das Buch ist eine musikethnologische Studie über eine Musikpraxis im Bakossi-Gebiet, die neben Klang und Sprache die Körperbewegungen mit einbezieht.     Abstract: In einer 1908 erschienenen "Kampfschrift gegen die Geräusche unseres Lebens" ereiferte sich der Kulturphilosoph Theodor Lessing über das "Getobe unermesslich anschwellender Riesenstädte, in denen "einer auf des anderen Nervenklaviatur" spiele. Als große Lärmbelästigung empfand er vor allem die Musik: So mokierte Lessing sich über die "grauenhafte Unsitte" der Biermusiken und Promenadenkonzerte oder die "Tyrannei" des Klavierspiels bei geöffnetem Fenster. Derlei Beschwerden sind indes nur die Gegenseite einer sich seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert umfassend ausbreitenden urbanen populären Musikkultur, die dieser Band aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick nimmt.

    Abstract: Aktuelle politische Diskussionen formulieren Inklusion als gesellschaftliches Ziel: Die UN-Behindertenrechtskonvention fordert die gleichberechtigte Inklusion behinderter und nicht behinderter Menschen. Der Nationale Aktionsplan Integration fordert Inklusion für Menschen unterschiedlicher Herkunft. Ziel des Projektes, Inklusion aus jugendkultureller Perspektive zu erfassen ist, von Jugendlichen selbst zu erfahren, was für sie Inklusion bedeutet. Die aktive Zuordnung zu einer Jugendkultur, die durch das Mitwirken in einer Band gegeben ist, geht über gesellschaftliche Zuschreibungen wie „behindert“ oder „mit Migrationshintergrund“ hinaus. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Inklusion aus jugendkultureller Perspektive anders funktioniert als aus musikpädagogischer und sozialpädagogischer Perspektive intendiert. Im Setting des Bandspiels geht es Jugendlichen verschiedener Herkunft und mit unterschiedlichen Lernvoraussetzungen primär um eine gelingende musikalische Interaktion, in die sie sich entsprechend ihrer subjektiven Vorlieben und Fähigkeiten einbringen können. Es bedeutet ein gemeinsames Aushandeln und Erproben von Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten und nicht zuletzt Freude an der gemeinsamen Aktion. Mit wenigen Ausnahmen, die im Einzelfall kritisch reflektiert werden, erweist sich Musik als besonderes Medium der Kommunikation, das große Freiräume bietet, verschiedene Aspekte von Identität zu integrieren, die sich aus den unterschiedlichsten Zusammenhängen jugendlicher Lebenswelten zusammensetzen können. Diese Erkenntnisse münden in Vorschläge zu einer Erweiterung gängiger Konzepte von Jugend(kultur)arbeit

    Abstract: Klänge, Töne und Musikwerke haben - nicht zuletzt seit Beginn der Moderne - (national-)kulturell identitätsstiftend gewirkt und tun dies in verschiedenen Kontexten noch heute. Welche medienspezifischen und soziokulturellen Voraussetzungen müssen erfüllt sein, damit Schallwellen eine kollektivbildende Wirkung entfalten können? Welche Parameter (Klang, Ton, Melodie, Rhythmus) sind dabei entscheidend? Wie werden Klänge zur Projektionsfläche ästhetischer Utopien, und existieren Zeit- und Lebensräume, in denen das Phänomen nicht begegnet? Die identitätsbildende Wirkung von Liedern, Hymnen, Klängen und Tönen ist aus geistes- wie gesellschaftswissenschaftlicher Perspektive wiederholt untersucht worden. Bis dato fehlt jedoch eine systematisch-interdisziplinäre Synopse und kritische Reflexion des in den Einzeldisziplinen Erforschten bzw. noch zu Erforschenden. In den vier Abschnitten dieses Bandes, der auf eine Tagung der »Jungen Akademie« in Paris zurückgeht, wird der Frage der Herausbildung kollektiver Identität durch Musik jeweils unter kulturanthropologischem, ästhetischem, historischem und kunstpraktischem Blickwinkel nachgegangen. In den literarischen Texten von Jack Kerouac, Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, Rainald Goetz und Thomas Meinecke fungiert populäre Musik beispielsweise ganz explizit als Medium der Textkonstitution.     Abstract: David A. McDonald rethinks the conventional history of the Palestinian crisis through an ethnographic analysis of music and musicians, protest songs, and popular culture. Charting a historical narrative that stretches from the late-Ottoman period through the end of the second Palestinian intifada, McDonald examines the shifting politics of music in its capacity to both reflect and shape fundamental aspects of national identity. Drawing case studies from Palestinian communities in Israel, in exile, and under occupation, McDonald grapples with the theoretical and methodological challenges of tracing "resistance" in the popular imagination, attempting to reveal the nuanced ways in which Palestinians have confronted and opposed the traumas of foreign occupation. The first of its kind, this book offers an in-depth ethnomusicological analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, contributing a performative perspective to the larger scholarly conversation about one of the world's most contested humanitarian issues.     Abstract: David A. McDonald rethinks the conventional history of the Palestinian crisis through an ethnographic analysis of music and musicians, protest songs, and popular culture. Charting a historical narrative that stretches from the late-Ottoman period through the end of the second Palestinian intifada, McDonald examines the shifting politics of music in its capacity to both reflect and shape fundamental aspects of national identity. Drawing case studies from Palestinian communities in Israel, in exile, and under occupation, McDonald grapples with the theoretical and methodological challenges of tracing "resistance" in the popular imagination, attempting to reveal the nuanced ways in which Palestinians have confronted and opposed the traumas of foreign occupation. The first of its kind, this book offers an in-depth ethnomusicological analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, contributing a performative perspective to the larger scholarly conversation about one of the world's most contested humanitarian issues. Vergessen wird dabei oft, dass Rap in erster Linie Partymusik ist. Seit der Entstehung des Stils in den 1970er Jahren ist die HipHop-Kultur ein stark umkämpftes Terrain. Ayla Güler Saieds Studie legt den empirischen Fokus auf die Biographien von Rapperinnen und Rappern verschiedener Genres und bettet diese in die theoretische Analyse der Entstehungsgeschichten des HipHop in Deutschland und den USA ein.     Abstract: Main description: Stadträume werden für und durch Musik erobert und transformiert. Dieser Band bietet Erkenntnisse über die symbolischen Konstruktionen von sowohl sozialen als auch geographischen Grenzen im Berliner Stadtteil Neukölln. In mehr als 60 Interviews mit Musikern, Soundkünstlern und Akteuren städtischer Institutionen wird nach der lokalen Verortung ästhetisch-klanglicher Phänomene gefragt. Medial vermittelte Vorstellungen über Neukölln und institutionelle Rahmenbedingungen erweisen sich dabei als konstitutiv für die Lebenswelten der kreativen Newcomer und deren ästhetische Ideen. Daneben veranschaulichen imaginierte, virtuelle Musikräume eine globale Mobilität von elektronischen Soundkulturen im Kiez.     Abstract: Noisy, confrontational, and controversial, industrial music first emerged in the mid-1970s around bands and performance groups who combined avant-garde electronic music with the provocative attitude and style of punk rock. In its early days, bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire produced a genuinely radical form of music bent on recontextualizing the signs and methods of cultural authority in an attempt to liberate listeners from the trappings of modernity. But, as industrial music took on more and more elements of popular music over the course of the 1980s it slowly abandoned its mission. By the mid-1990s, it was seen as simply another style of pop music, and had ironically fallen into the trappings it sought by its very existence to destroy. In "Assimilate", S. Alexander Reed provides the first ever critical history of this fascinating and enigmatic genre tracing industrial music's trajectory from Throbbing Gristle's founding of the record label Industrial Music in 1976, to its peak in popularity on the back of the band Nine Inch Nails in the mid-1990s, and through its decline to the present day. Through a series of revealing explorations of works spanning the entirety of industrial music's past, and drawing on extensive interviews with musicians, record label owners, DJs, and concert promoters, Reed paints a thorough historical picture that includes not only the bands, but the structures that supported them, and the scenes they created. In so doing, he reveals an engaging story of an ideological disintegration and its aftermath. The definitive text on the genre, "Assimilate" is essential reading for fans of industrial music, and scholars and students of popular music alike.

The study crosses generations of performers and audiences enabling an examination of changing socio-historical contexts and an exploration of the relationships at play between performance strategies, star persona and the popular music press. For instance, the strategies employed by Madonna and Grace Jones to engage with the processes and issues related to public ageing are not the same as those employed by Courtney Love or Celia Cruz. The essays in this insightful collection reflect on the ways that artists and fans destabilise both the linear trajectories and the compelling weight of expectations regarding ageing by employing different modalities of resistance through persona re-invention, nostalgia, postmodern intertextuality and even early death as the ultimate denial of age

    Abstract: Outside of music, the importance of sound and listening have been greatly overlooked in Latin American history. Visual media has dominated cultural studies, affording an incomplete record of the modern era. This edited volume presents an original analysis of the role of sound in Latin American and Caribbean societies, from the late nineteenth century to the present. The contributors examine the importance of sound in the purveyance of power, gender roles, race, community, religion, and populism. They also demonstrate how sound is essential to the formation of citizenship and nationalism.Sonic media, and radio in particular, have become primary tools for contesting political issues. In that vein, the contributors view the control of radio transmission and those who manipulate its content for political gain. Conversely, they show how, in neoliberal climates, radio programs have exposed corruption and provided a voice for activism.The essays address sonic production in a variety of media: radio; Internet; digital recordings; phonographs; speeches; carnival performances; fireworks festivals, and the reinterpretation of sound in literature. They examine the bodily experience of sound, and its importance to memory coding and identity formation.This volume looks to sonic media as an essential vehicle for transmitting ideologies, imagined communities, and culture. As the contributors discern, modern technology has made sound ubiquitous, and its study is therefore crucial to understanding the flow of information and influence in Latin America and globally.

Die Bildwelten der Gangsta-Rap-Kultur sind dabei nicht nur das Resultat von medienbasierten Glokalisierungsprozessen, sondern auch Bezugspunkte in einem Krisendiskurs um ethnisierte Jugendkriminalität oder deviante Männlichkeitsentwürfe.
