What kinds of worlds do documents help create? Further, how might such documentary practices and settler colonial ways of seeing be refused?Settler Colonial Ways of Seeing investigates how the Canadian state has used documents, lists, and databases to generate, make visible-and invisible-Indigenous identity. With an archive of legislative documents, registration forms, identity cards, and reports, Danielle Taschereau Mamers traces the political and media history of Indian status in Canada, demonstrating how paperwork has been used by the state to materialize identity categories in the service of colonial governance. Her analysis of bureaucratic artifacts is led by the interventions of Indigenous artists, including Robert Houle, Nadia Myre, Cheryl L'Hirondelle, and Rebecca Belmore. Bringing together media theories of documentation and the strategies of these artists, Settler Colonial Ways of Seeing develops a method for identifying how bureaucratic documents mediate power relations as well as how those relations may be disobeyed and re-imagined.By integrating art-led inquiry with media theory and settler colonial studies approaches, Taschereau Mamers offers a political and media history of the documents that have reproduced Indian status. More importantly, she provides us with an innovative guide for using art as a method of theorizing decolonial political relations. This is a crucial book for any reader interested in the intersection of state archives, settler colonial studies, and visual culture in the context of Canada's complex and violent relationship with Indigenous peoples

    Abstract: This book examines the involvement of African American artists in the New Deal art programs of the 1930s. Emphasizing broader issues informed by the uniqueness of Black experience rather than individual artists' works, Mary Ann Calo makes the case that the revolutionary vision of these federal art projects is best understood in the context of access to opportunity, mediated by the reality of racial segregation.Focusing primarily on the Federal Art Project (FAP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Calo documents African American artists' participation in community art centers in Harlem, in St. Louis, and throughout the South. She examines the internal workings of the Harlem Artists' Guild, the Guild's activities during the 1930s, and its alliances with other groups, such as the Artists' Union and the National Negro Congress. Calo also explores African American artists' representation in the exhibitions sponsored by WPA administrators and the critical reception of their work. In doing so, she elucidates the evolving meanings of the terms race, culture, and community in the interwar era. The book concludes with an essay by Jacqueline Francis on Black artists in the early 1940s, after the end of the FAP program.Presenting essential new archival information and important insights into the experiences of Black New Deal artists, this study expands the factual record and positions the cumulative evidence within the landscape of critical race studies.     Abstract: Spanning over two centuries from around 1800 to the present day, Black American Portraits chronicles the ways in which Black Americans have used portraiture to envision themselves in their own eyes. Remembering Two Centuries of Black American Art, curated by David C.     Abstract: La coiffure et les poils humains, au même titre que les vêtements, les bijoux et les accessoires, participent depuis des siècles à la construction des apparences. À la frontière entre la mode et la représentation du corps, le sujet ne laisse personne indifférent. Dans la culture occidentale, le cheveu hirsute autant que l'excès de poils ont souvent été associés au diable, à l'animal et à l'homme sauvage. Si bien que pendant des siècles la femme et l'homme civilisés ont dû peigner, dompter et parfois même dissimuler leur toison. Parce que le poil est un matériau corporel qui peut être transformé de mille et une manières - étiré, coupé, complété, coloré, orné, caché ou exhibé -, il est un élément essentiel de la mise en scène de soi qui permet d'afficher l'adhésion à une mode, une conviction, une contestation et est porteur de nombreuses significations, telles la féminité, la virilité, la négligence, etc. Quelques noms de coiffures célèbres - à la Fontanges, à la Titus, à la garçonne, à l'iroquoise, etc. - révèlent que les cheveux sont eux aussi l'objet de véritables phénomènes de mode, porteurs de codes sociaux et culturels que les contemporains de chaque époque savent décrypter. De la fin du Moyen Âge à nos jours, ce livre aborde plusieurs thèmes inhérents à l'histoire de la coiffure (cheveux peignés, coupés, ornés ; perruques, postiches, calvitie ; coloration), sans oublier les questions liées à la pilosité faciale (visages imberbes, barbes, moustaches, sourcils) et à la pilosité corporelle (torse, jambes, pubis, aisselles, épilation). Schon lange fördert der Bund die kulturelle Bildung im Programm „Kultur macht stark". Bisher lagen aber keine belastbaren Daten zum Status quo und zu Entwicklungen im Rahmen des Programms vor. Um mehr Steuerungswissen zu generieren, wurde im Projekt InKuBi ein exemplarisches Indikatorenset entwickelt. Die Indikatoren orientieren sich an der Systematik des nationalen Bildungsberichts und legen den Grundstein für ein Monitoringsystem kultureller Bildung in Deutschland. Die Studie, die von der Stiftung Mercator gefördert wurde, zeigt die Entstehung und die Grundlagen des Indikatorensets sowie die Bedeutung einer datengestützten Gesamtschau für die kulturelle Bildung im Rahmen eines bundesweiten Bildungsmonitorings.

    Abstract: ‘Race Is Everything’ looks at ideas of ‘racial science’ in the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, and how art was influenced by them. It looks at race in general, but with a particular concentration on attitudes towards and representations of people of African and Jewish descent. David Bindman argues that behind all racial ideas is the belief that outward appearance, and especially skull-shape, can be correlated with inner character and intelligence, and that these could be used to create a seemingly scientific hierarchy of races. This book considers many aspects, including the skull as a racial marker; ancient Egypt as a precedent for Southern slavery; Darwin, race and aesthetics; the ‘Mediterranean race’; the visual aspects of eugenics; and the racial politics of Emil Nolde.

    Abstract: La mostra "Gli ebrei, i Medici e il Ghetto di Firenze" ha un doppio valore, storico e culturale. I secoli di vita del ghetto rappresentano il capitolo centrale della storia della presenza ebraica a Firenze, caratterizzato da norme di segregazione ed al contempo simbolo di una forma di "inclusione" ufficiale nel tessuto civico di Firenze: il ghetto si trovava di fronte al Mercato Vecchio (oggi piazza della Repubblica), allora cuore pulsante del commercio cittadino. Il ghetto fu uno strumento di oppressione ma anche, paradossalmente un luogo ove si permise la vita e la crescita della comunità. Si tratta senz'altro di un periodo la cui conoscenza, nonostante la demolizione e la cancellazione della memoria fisica dei luoghi, è necessaria per comprendere dinamiche e caratteristiche del rapporto fra la minoranza ebraica e la città. Compongono il catalogo una corposa sezione di saggi, le schede delle cento opere in mostra e gli schemi e le planimetrie urbanistiche del ghetto di Firenze

Stewart describes as the Washington Black Renaissance.     Abstract: "In Fugitive Time, Matthew Omelsky theorizes the embodied experience of time in twentieth- and twenty-first-century black artforms from across the world. Through the lens of time, he charts the sensations and coursing thoughts that accompany desires for freedom as they appear in the work of artists as varied as Toni Morrison, Yvonne Vera, Aimé Césaire, and Issa Samb. "Fugitive time" names a distinct utopian desire directed at the anticipated moment when the body and mind have been unburdened of the violence that has consumed black life globally for centuries, bringing with it a new form of being. Omelsky shows how fugitive time is not about attaining this transcendent release, but instead sustaining the idea of it as an ecstatic social gathering. From the desire for ethereal queer worlds in the Black Audio Film Collective's Twilight City to Sun Ra's transformation of nineteenth-century scientific racism into an insurgent fugitive aesthetic, Omelsky shows how fugitive time evolves and how it remains a dominant form of imagining freedom in global black cultural expression"--

    Abstract: An den Kunsthochschulen der DDR studierten ausländische Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus den Sozialistischen Bruderländern wie Ägypten, Äthiopien, Israel oder Uruguay. Was wurde aus ihnen und warum tauchen sie in den Rückschauen zur DDR-Kunst nicht auf? Ihre Werke rücken nun ins Zentrum. Zugleich werden die Einwanderungsgeschichte und die Erinnerung an die Wiedervereinigung aus der Perspektive ostdeutscher Migrant*innen erzählt. Positionen junger Künstler*innen of Color der zweiten und dritten Generation mit biografischem Bezug zur DDR ergänzen die aktuelle Perspektive.

    Abstract: "Black Artists in America: From Civil Rights to the Bicentennial explores African American art during the turbulence of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The catalogue considers the various ways in which African American artists responded to growing civil unrest, challenging the cultural, environmental, political, racial, and social issues of the era. In the 1960s, Black artists who came of age during World War II and the increasing civil rights activity of the 1950s continued to challenge inequities in the art world. They created works that celebrated their racial identity, communicated with Black audiences, and participated in the struggle for political, economic, and social equality. The establishment of artist collectives such as Spiral and museums devoted to Black art, including the Studio Museum in Harlem, alongside the emergence of art historians and critics like David Driskell and Linda Goode Bryant, marked early steps to bring Black art into broader artistic discourse. In addition to 140 full-color images of approximately seventy paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from public and private collections across the country, the catalogue features in-depth essays, including original research on artists James Porter and Merton Simpson"--

    Abstract: Erstmals werden in Berlin hochrangige Kunstwerke der vorislamischen Epochen aus Museen und Instituten Usbekistans präsentiert. Sie führen in eine weitgehend unbekannte Welt. Seitdem Alexander der Große im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. auf seinem beispiellosen Kriegszug auch in die zentralasiatischen Gebiete vordrang, gelangten hellenistische Einflüsse in diese Region. Mit der Einwanderung nomadischer Reiterstämme aus China entwickelte sich eine Bau- und Kunstsprache, die östliche und westliche Elemente in besonderer Art und Weise verband. Diese Verbindung künstlerischer Traditionen des Hellenismus mit Einflüssen aus Indien und den Traditionen der Steppenvölker erlebte im Reich der Kuschan vom 1. bis ins 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. ihre Blütezeit. So entstand in den Palästen, den großen Städten und den buddhistischen Klöstern eine einzigartige Bilderwelt. Unter den Lehmhügeln der verfallenen Gebäude überdauerten deren Zeugnisse bis zu ihrer Wiederentdeckung die Stürme der Zeit. In diesem Katalog werden die aktuellen Ergebnisse der usbekischen und internationalen Forschung umfassend vorgestellt

The book aims to open media studies and affect theory to deeper engagement with works and theorists outside Euro-America by offering a detailed exploration of the critical discourses and artistic practices of both influential as well as lesser-known theorists and artists. Through case studies, Feeling Media proposes an emergent framework of analysis for the humanities that the author terms the "affective scale." The book reads Japanese media theory as working thought, taking into account its complexity and global interconnectedness while resisting reductive linkages to dominant Euro-American theory. Laut Integrationsmonitor der Stadt lebten 2020 rund 180.000 Menschen südslawischer Herkunft in Wien. Sie kommen vor allem aus Bosnien und Herzegowina, Kroatien und Serbien, aber auch aus Slowenien, Bulgarien und Nordmazedonien. Jede*r zehnte Wiener*in ist damit Südslaw*in. Hinzu kommt die autochthone kroatische und slowenische Bevölkerung Österreichs, die in Wien ihre eigenen kulturellen Strukturen aufgebaut hat. Die Bundeshauptstadt stellt für alle diese Gruppen einen zentralen kulturellen Bezugspunkt dar. Im Fokus des Sammelbandes stehen zusammenschauend die Wiener südslawische Gegenwart und alle Schauplätze, an denen südslawische Sprachen, Kulturen und Menschen in Wien heute sichtbar werden.
    Abstract: Angaben zur beteiligten Person Jakiša: Miranda Jakiša ist Universitätsprofessorin für Südslawische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft an der Universität Wien. Sie lehrte zuvor an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und hatte Fellowships an der Princeton University, am Imre-Kertesz-Kolleg sowie an der Slowenischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste (ZRC) inne. Miranda Jakiša forscht unter dem Begriff der „Post-Jugoslawistik“ insbesondere zu Gegenwartsphänomenen in historischer Perspektive und alle südslawische Kultur-Räume umfassend, zu denen sie auch internationale Diaspora-Gemeinschaften zählt.
    Abstract: Angaben zur beteiligten Person Tyran: Katharina Tyran ist Universitätsassistentin für slawische Philologie (Post-Doc) am Institut für Slawistik der Universität Wien. Sie studierte in Wien und Zagreb und promovierte an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin mit einer Arbeit zu Sprach- und Identifikationsdiskursen bei den Burgenländischen Kroat*innen. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte beinhalten soziolinguistische Fragestellungen mit einem Fokus auf Schrift und Graphie, Minderheitensprachen und Volksgruppen sowie Sichtbarkeiten südslawischer Sprachen in Österreich.

    Abstract: "Organized around a single object—the marble bust Why Born Enslaved! by French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux—Fictions of Emancipation: Carpeaux Recast is the first exhibition at The Met to examine Western sculpture in relation to the histories of transatlantic slavery, colonialism, and empire. Created in the wake of American emancipation and some twenty years after the abolition of slavery in the French Atlantic, Why Born Enslaved! was shaped by the enduring popularity of antislavery imagery, the development of nineteenth-century ethnographic theories of racial difference, and France’s colonialist fascination with Africa. The exhibition will explore the sculpture’s place within these contexts. Featuring more than thirty-five works of art in sections unfolding around Carpeaux’s sculpture, Fictions of Emancipation will offer an in-depth look at portrayals of Black enslavement, emancipation, and personhood with an aim toward challenging the notion that representation in the wake of abolition constitutes a clear moral or political stance. Important works by Josiah Wedgwood, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, Charles Cordier, Edmonia Lewis, Louis-Simon Boizot, and others will show how Western artists of the nineteenth century engaged with the Black figure as a political symbol and site of exoticized beauty, while contemporary sculptures by Kara Walker and Kehinde Wiley will connect the dialogue around Carpeaux’s bust to current conversations about the legacies of slavery in the Western world.     Abstract: How California’s counterculture of the 1960s to 1980s profoundly shaped—and was shaped by—West Coast artistsThe 1960s exert a special fascination in modern art. But most accounts miss the defining impact of the period’s youth culture, largely incubated in California, on artists who came of age in that decade. As their prime exemplar, Bruce Conner, reminisced, “I did everything that everybody did in 1967 in the Haight-Ashbury. . . . I would take peyote and walk out in the streets.” And he vividly channeled those experiences into his art, while making his mark on every facet of the psychedelic movement—from the mountains of Mexico with Timothy Leary to the rock ballrooms of San Francisco to the gilded excesses of the New Hollywood. In The Artist in the Counterculture, Thomas Crow tells the story of California art from the 1960s to the 1980s—some of the strongest being made anywhere at the time—and why it cannot be understood apart from the new possibilities of thinking and feeling unleashed by the rebels of the counterculture.Crow reevaluates Conner and other key figures—from Catholic activist Corita Kent to Black Panther Emory Douglas to ecological witness Bonnie Ora Sherk—as part of a generational cohort galvanized by resistance to war, racial oppression, and environmental degradation.
