    Abstract: Thanks to Renzo Duin’s annotated translation, the voice of Lodewijk Schmidt—an Afrodiasporic Saramakka Maroon from Surinam—is finally available for Anglophone audiences worldwide. More than anything else, Schmidt’s three mid-twentieth-century ethnographic accounts tell the tragic story of Indigenous Peoples of the Eastern Guiana Highlands (northern Brazil, and southern Suriname and French Guiana). Schmidt’s is a story that takes account of the pathological mechanisms of colonialism, in which Indigenous Peoples and African Diaspora communities, both victims of colonialism, vilify each other falling privy to the divide-and-conquer mentality mechanisms of colonialism. Accounts like that of the death and mourning of a magnificent Indigenous leader, Alapité, on 13-14 August 1941, suggest a deep respect on the part of the Maroon author, while his accounts also show his awareness of how the Indigenous Peoples vilified the Maroons. Beyond the ethnographic element, Duin argues that Schmidt was sent on a covert mission to determine whether or not the Nazis had engaged in covert missions and if they had established bases and airfields in the region. As current ecological disasters, incurred by neocolonial, neoliberal and geopolitical practices, threaten to completely destroy the Amazonian forests that Schmidt describes, his meticulous accounts underscore the predetermined tragedy that is the result of the European and later North-American presence in present-day Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil. Duin’s profound knowledge of the history, topography, and fauna of the region contextualizes Schmidt’s ethnographic accounts and forces us to take account of the catastrophe that is deforestation and ethnocide of the Indigenous Peoples of the Eastern Guiana Highlands

    Abstract: Die Materialitätsgeschichte der Aufklärung anhand der Sammelpraxis von Vater und Sohn Forster. Weltumsegler, im Feld forschende Naturhistoriker und Ethnologen, Gelehrte - Johann Reinhold (1729-1798) und sein Sohn Georg Forster (1754-1794) trugen grundlegend zur Erschließung außereuropäischer Welten bei. Durch Sammeln, Ordnen, Zeigen, Zeichnen, Transportieren und Präparieren sowie durch Schreiben und Übersetzen haben sie einen erheblichen Anteil an dem Prozess genommen, der die zusammen mit James Cook erkundeten Räume in Wissensgegenstände verwandelte. Insofern waren die Forsters Produzenten: Das arkadische O-Tahiti und die Freundschaftlichen Inseln oder die düsteren Gestade - der Charlotten-Sund und die verschneite Ödnis Feuerlands - sind zum einen tatsächlich in Augenschein genommene Orte, zum anderen sind es Gegenstände und Ergebnisse von Gestaltungsprojekten. Der vorliegende Band erschließt das Geflecht der Arbeitsfelder von Johann Reinhold und Georg Forster. In den Blick genommen werden die Materialitätsgeschichte der Aufklärung im Bereich der Sammlungs- und Objektpraxis sowie die sammlungsrelevanten Infrastrukturen und Institutionen des aufgeklärten Wissens.

Kleidung und Mode, Behausung und Architektur, Essen und Ästhetik). Das Augenmerk richtet sich dabei hauptsächlich auf solche Eigenheiten der japanischen Kultur, die sich als relativ beständig erwiesen haben und in verschiedenen Epochen in Erscheinung treten. Die Analyse des geistigen Hintergrunds kultureller Traditionen ermöglicht es somit, Verhaltensweisen, Wertvorstellungen und Formen der ästhetischen Gestaltung zu verstehen, die auch dem hypermodernen Japan von heute einen ganz eigenen, unverwechselbaren Platz in der zunehmend globalisierten Welt erhalten haben.

    Abstract: Verlagsinfo: "ETHNOPORNOGRAPHY collects essays that both develop and critique the concept that gives the book its name. Ethnopornography, a term first coined by British anthropologist Walter Roth in the late nineteenth century, refers to the often eroticized observation - for supposedly scientific or academic purposes - of those deemed "other" by the observer. In Roth's case, he was concerned that the descriptions and images he recorded of the bodily and sexual practices of the Aboriginal people he studied were inappropriate for lay readers who might find them vulgar - or worse, titillating. The editors of this collection focus on what it is that creates the slippage between the pornographic and the scientific. In particular, they attend to the importance of race within the colonially created and maintained worlds of both research - ethnography in particular - and pornography. The essays cover time periods ranging from the sixteenth century to the present day, locations from West Africa to the United States, and topics from the literary casting of Islamic culture as sexually excessive and deviant by the Ottomans to a personal account of racially and colonially inflected tensions stemming from an anthropologist's sexual activities while in the field"--

    Abstract: „Kultur, Raum und Zeit“ ist der Versuch, eine vergleichende Kulturtheorie zu schreiben, die auf umfassenden kulturellen Zusammenhängen beruht und sich nicht allein auf empirische Erhebungen verlässt. Es entwickelt den Kulturbegriff dort, wo er entsteht, auf dem Niveau der Einzelperson. Der Bezug zur Lebenswelt und zur Kultur früherer Generationen wird als Grundlage von Kulturentwicklung verstanden. Die entsprechende Wahrnehmung wird dabei zum zentralen Faktor der Entstehung von Kultur. Raum und Zeit werden so zu Schlüsselelementen in diesem Prozess. Kultur, Raum und Zeit ist die einzige Kulturtheorie, die sowohl auf empirischen Erfahrungen wie auch auf theoretischen Überlegungen basiert, die der Autor in jahrzehntelangen Aufenthalten im asiatischen Raum entwickelt hat. Beginnend in Beijing im Jahre 1978 als Student hat er die Öffnung Chinas miterlebt, war in den achtziger Jahren sechs Jahre in Japan, dann in Beijing, Shanghai und Hong Kong als schweizerischer Diplomat tätig und hat 2016 seine Karriere als Asienberater am Geneva Center for Security Policy beendet.
    Abstract: ‘Kultur, Raum und Zeit’ is an attempt to develop a comparative theory of culture relying on a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. It is the only model so far which integrates empirical and theoretical aspects in order to describe interrelations between different factors which form culture. The challenge of a given natural and social environment with which a person and earlier generations are confronted provides the basis for a new definition of culture. It sees perception as a key element in the process of developing culture. In this way, time and space become essential factors, hence the title ‘Culture, Space and Time’. ‘Culture, Space and Time’ is the only cultural model which successfully integrates empirical experiences and theoretical analysis into a comprehensive model for cultural comparisons. It is based on the author’s diplomatic career in Japan and China, which started with his time as a student in Beijing in 1978 and ended with his work as an Asian advisor to the Geneva Center for Security Policy GCSP in 2016.

Hilde Link erzählt von der chaotischen Welt Indiens, in der sie fast zwei Jahre das sakrale Theater auf den Dörfern in Tamilnadu (Südindien) erforschte. Vor den Tempeln verschiedener Gottheiten werden des Nachts die großen indischen Epen szenisch umgesetzt – von professionellen Schauspielern oder Laien-Darstellern –, begleitet von Ritualen am Tag. Die Autorin berichtet von Nöten und Freuden im Alltag mit zwei kleinen Kindern, von interkulturellen Missverständnissen, von Liebe und Gewalt und vermittelt damit ein vielschichtiges Bild vom Leben auf dem indischen Dorf. Die Autorin Hilde Link promovierte im Hauptfach Ethnologie und in den Nebenfächern Philosophie und kath. Theologie. Sie war wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Ethnologie der Freien Universität Berlin und lehrte am Institut für Ethnologie der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, der Pondicherry University und der Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano. Sie forschte u. a. in Kambodscha und auf Mauritius, hauptsächlich aber in Indien. Nach dem Tsunami 2004 gründete Hilde Link zusammen mit ihrem Mann das Prana-Hilfsprojekt in Indien.

    Abstract: Volume 40 of Research in Economic Anthropology explores current issues in national and international policy, cost and debt, business and capitalism, and economic theory and behavior specifically pertaining to Brazil. The underlying theme running through the collection is the steady encroachment of neoliberalism into economic policy and practice, and the impact this has had on everyday ways of life. In Part I, Raja Swamy explores post-disaster relocation and livelihood issues in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, India, Anthony Rausch and Junichiro Koji investigate Japan's Hometown Tax Donation Program, and Emma Gilberthorpe argues for development plans that incorporate indigenous people's needs and worldviews. In Part II, Vassily Pigounides empirically analyzes a revenue management system originating in France, Irene Sabaté Muriel looks at the moral economy of mortgage lending and economic reasoning during the housing bubble that rocked Spain when it burst in 2007, and Mathias Krabbe explores debt among US college students. In Part III, Ieva Snikersproge examines a French worker cooperative ice cream venture, Andres Gramajo quantitively measures the strength of capitalist thought among business owners in Latin America, and Michal Stein and John Vertovec explore individual action in the transitional economy in Havana's tourist-oriented dance instruction world. In Part IV, Sidney Greenfield theorizes on two coexisting but disjunct patterns of behavior in Brazil, which give rise to tension, corruption allegations, and public scandals, and Guilherme Falleiros analyzes the structural shifts between global capitalism and indigenous ways of life in the same country.

    Abstract: "In this ethnography of Krakowian society, Siobhan Magee explores essential questions on the relationship between fur and culture in Poland. How can wearing a fur coat indicate someone's political views in Krakow, beyond their opinion on animal rights? What kinds of associations are given to someone wearing a fur coat in Poland? And what impact does generational difference have on the fur-wearing traditions of modern day Krakowians? Magee looks further into detailed analyses of conversations held relating to fur, including why fur is an apt inheritance for a grandmother to pass on to her granddaughter; what it was like trading fur on 'black markets' during socialism, and why some anti-fur activists link fur to patriarchal power and the Roman Catholic Church. In so doing, it becomes clear how fur is an evocative textile with an uncommonly rich symbolic and historical significance. Magee's research uncovers the symbolic and historic significance that fur evokes in relation to culture in Poland. In her investigations, her ethnography becomes a means for understanding generational difference in Poland. Written with reference to extensive fieldwork, Magee goes on to show how the classification of generation can be a much more accessible indicator and measure of difference than other categories, including sexuality, class and faith. Thus, 'generation' and 'inheritance' are shown to be uniquely powerful idioms with which to discuss power and social change in Poland. Transdisziplinäre Teams entwickelten hier innovative Präsentations- und Vermittlungsmodelle für ethnografische Sammlungen. Zeitgleich begann ein großer Szenografie-Dienstleister mit der Gestaltung der Museumsflächen als erlebnisorientierter Themenpark. Daraus erwachsen Fragen zur mehrdeutigen Rolle des Lab im Gestaltungsprozess des Humboldt Forums und der Einbeziehung zeitgenössischer Kunst. Johanna Di Blasi beleuchtet Folgen der wenig beachteten Tatsache, dass historisch belastete Sammlungen und ihre wissenschaftlichen Kurator_innen von zwei Seiten unter Druck geraten sind: durch postkoloniale Revisionen und durch den Machtzuwachs der Szenografie.

    Abstract: Based on eleven months of ethnographic fieldwork, this book explores the experiences of childless women in contemporary urban Georgia and their perspectives on infertility and assisted reproduction. It examines how assisted reproductive technologies intersect with local beliefs about reproduction, kinship, and descent. The study takes into account a comprehensive definition of assisted reproduction, encompassing not only medical technologies but also non-biomedical healing practices. The primary focus of this research revolves around questions related to family planning, the conception of childlessness, and assisted reproduction in the context of people's cosmologies. It particularly delves into their understanding of kin relations and the significance of parenthood in Georgian society, as well as its connection to broader demographic patterns. In doing so, it engages with debates about the nature of kinship and the role of biogenetic substance in the anthropology of kinship.
    Abstract: Gestützt auf elf Monaten Feldforschung untersucht dieses Buch die Erfahrungen kinderloser Frauen im urbanen Georgien und ihren Umgang mit Unfruchtbarkeit und assistierter Reproduktion. Es analysiert, wie assistierte Reproduktionstechnologien mit den lokalen Vorstellungen von Reproduktion, Verwandtschaft und Deszendenz zusammenspielen. Als Grundlage wird eine weite Definition von assistierter Reproduktion vorgeschlagen, die nicht nur medizinische Technologien, sondern auch nicht-biomedizinische Heilpraktiken einschließt. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Forschung liegt auf Fragen zur Familienplanung, Vorstellungen von Kinderlosigkeit sowie assistierter Reproduktion im Kontext lokaler Kosmologien. Dabei wird insbesondere auf die Bedeutung von Verwandtschaft und Elternschaft sowie Verknüpfung mit allgemeineren demographischen Entwicklungen eingegangen. Damit schließt diese Arbeit an Diskurse zur Natur von Verwandtschaft und der Rolle biogenetischer Substanz in der Verwandtschaftsethnologie an.

    Abstract: Wir leben in einer Welt, die sich immer schneller verändert; Globalisierung, Individualisierung, Ökonomisierung oder Mediatisierung sind Stichworte, unter denen dies diskutiert wird. Wie alle Sozialwissenschaften steht deshalb auch die empirische Kommunikationswissenschaft vor immer neuen Forschungsfragen und Forschungsfeldern. Viel stärker als bisher muss Forschung deshalb in Zukunft darauf angelegt sein, neue Bereiche konzeptionell und theoretisch zu erfassen. Dies aber nicht durch blinde Empirie, die sich in der Suche nach Verknüpfungen von immer neuen Variablen erschöpft. Und auch nicht durch reine Denkoperationen, wie alles auch sein könnte. Vielmehr müssen neue Theorien auf empirischer Grundlage entstehen. Dies leistet die heuristische Kommunikationsforschung, mit der sich der Band beschäftigen will. Sie greift unter anderem auf die Ethnographie als Forschungsstrategie zurück – insofern Kommunikation und Kultur eng zusammenhängen, hat Ethnographie in der Kommunikationsforschung bereits eine lange Geschichte. Und wie man konkrete Forschungsfragen durch die nachvollziehbare Konstruktion von empirisch gestützter Theorie beantwortet, zeigt die grounded theory nach Glaser und Strauss. In dem Text wird in diese Methoden sowohl konzeptionell als auch praktisch eingeführt.

    Abstract: Timo Luks geht von der Beobachtung aus, dass die aktuelle Wiederbelebung von Kapitalismustheorie und Kapitalismuskritik mit einem neuen Interesse an nicht-westlichen Wirtschaftsweisen einhergeht. Konzepte, die seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert in der Ethnologie entwickelt wurden, um »primitive Wirtschaften« zu beschreiben, entfalten gegenwärtig wieder erhebliche Attraktivität. Praktiken der Gabe und Gegenseitigkeit in vorkapitalistischen Gesellschaften, der Kula-Ringtausch in der Inselwelt des Westpazifik, das verschwenderische Rivalitätsspiel des Potlatch in Nordwestamerika – diese und andere Konzepte dienen als Bezugspunkte einer Suche nach ökonomischen Alternativen. Der Autor rekonstruiert die Geschichte der Beschäftigung mit außereuropäischen Wirtschaftsweisen. Er zeigt auf, dass die Begegnung von Ökonomie und Ethnologie seit Marx eine Wahrnehmungsweise hervorbrachte, in der die Ökonomie der Anderen und der moderne Kapitalismus spiegelbildlich aufeinander bezogen waren. Der ökonomisch-ethnologische Diskurs kreiste um eine Prüfung zentraler Begriffe, die das Nachdenken über Wirtschaft in westlichen Gesellschaften prägen (Akkumulation, Geld, Gewinnstreben, Kapital, Konkurrenz, Markt, Preis, Profit, Tausch, Unternehmergeist, Ware). Aus wissensgeschichtlicher Perspektive lässt sich die Frage beantworten, wie eine Beschäftigung mit fernen Gesellschaften Papua-Neuguineas, Afrikas oder Amazoniens zum Schlüssel für das Verständnis »unserer« Wirtschaftsweise werden konnte.

Recounting the economic systems of indigenous societies first spotted by ethnologists in the late nineteenth century, Timo Luks reconstructs encounters between economics and social anthropology in an effort to historicise concepts still being touted as benchmarks for a post-capitalist Utopia.

In 32 Einzelkapiteln stellt das Handbuch die indigenen Kulturen Mesoamerikas aus zeitgeschichtlicher und ethnologischer Perspektive dar. Es greift aktuelle Entwicklungen auf und bietet ausgehend vom gegenwärtigen Stand empirischer Kulturforschung fachliche Orientierung für ein weiterführendes, vertiefendes Studium der Region. Das Handbuch gliedert sich in fünf Hauptteile. Der erste bietet eine kompakte Einführung unter Berücksichtigung altamerikanistischer und sprachwissenschaftlicher Aspekte. Es folgen zwei historische Teile, einer zur Geschichte ethnologischer Forschung in Mesoamerika und einer zur neuzeitlichen Geschichte der Region. Im vierten Teil werden anhand ethnographischer Einzelfälle zentrale Themenbereiche der Ethnologie Mesoamerikas vorgestellt. Der fünfte Teil ist überregionalen kulturellen Prozessen gewidmet, wie Revitalisierungs- und Autonomiebewegungen oder der wachsenden indigenen Medienproduktion.
    Abstract: Die gewaltige Fülle von zu weiterer Lektüre anregenden Details und Zahlenmaterial, vor allem auch bei den Angaben im Glossar, machen dieses Buch zu einer wahren Fundgrube. Der gewiss sehr schwierigen Koordination so unterschiedlicher Beiträge in einem Handbuch und der Zusammenfassung von Glossar, Register und einer gemeinsamen Bibliographie sei hier höchstes Lob gezollt. If people in other cultures live radically different emotional lives how can we ever understand them? Using vivid, often dramatic, examples from around the world, and in dialogue with current work in psychology and philosophy, Andrew Beatty develops an anthropological perspective on the affective life, showing how emotions colour experience and transform situations; how, in turn, they are shaped by culture and history.     Abstract: Die Schattenökonomie in Berliner Privathaushalten ist ein gutes Beispiel für die internationale Arbeitsteilung, wie sie sich mit der Globalisierung herausgebildet hat. An den alltäglichen Begegnungen polnischer Putzfrauen und ihren deutschen Arbeitgeberinnen ist abzulesen, wie sich das polnisch-deutsche Verhältnis im persönlichen Umgang neu konstituiert. Die ethnografische Studie von Ute Frings-Merck lässt die Akteurinnen zu Wort kommen, beschreibt ihr Changieren zwischen Nähe und Distanz, zeigt ihre widerstreitenden Ambitionen auf und entdeckt dabei kulturelle Imaginationen und Zuschreibungen, die den alltäglichen Praktiken zu Grunde liegen: Die Vergangenheit, die beide Nachbarländer verbindet, ist unausweichlich.

    Abstract: This volume of Research in Economic Anthropology, which presents ten peer-reviewed anthropological papers, celebrates the 40th anniversary of the series by taking a close look at human vulnerability: the ways in which people attempt to cope with it and barriers to successfully overcoming it. The two leading articles both take up the issue of microfinance; Daniel Murphy examines the influences of this in the lives of pastoralists in Mongolia, and Megan Hinrichsen explores related processes among vendors in Quito, Ecuador. Next, Elena Sischarenco looks at ways of dealing with vulnerability in the northern Italian construction industry. Sarah Lyon investigates smallholders’ experiences with, and adaptations to, the coffee rust disaster in Oaxaca, Mexico, as well as the functions of fair trade organizations. Rounding out the first half of the volume is Raja Swamy’s analysis of post-tsunami reconstruction in Tamil Nadu, India. The second half starts with Janneke Verheijen’s investigation of women’s survival strategies in rural Malawi, southeast Africa, and Lai Wo’s study of intimate relationships and transactions between Western men and Southeast Asian women in Hong Kong. Courtney Lewis explores political and economic sovereignty among the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina, USA. Finally, the volume turns to the past with Kari Henquinet’s examination of the evolution of American faith-based overseas development aid projects in the 20th century, and with Serge Svizzero’s and Clement Tisdell’s analysis of Early Bronze Age desert kite use for trapping gazelles in parts of Southwest Asia. Ultimately, it is hoped that this and other scholarly investigations into human vulnerability will lead to better preventive and curative measures, for an imperfect world

    Abstract: "Gupta considers decolonization through the twined lenses of history and ethnography, accessed through written, oral, visual and eyewitness accounts of how people experienced the transfer of state power. She looks at the materiality of decolonization as a movement of peoples across vast oceanic spaces, demonstrating how it was a process of dispossession for both the Portuguese formerly in power and ordinary colonial citizens and subjects. She then discusses the production of race and class anxieties during decolonization, which took on a variety of forms but were often articulated through material objects. The book aims to move beyond linear histories of colonial independence by connecting its various regions using the theme of decolonization, offering a productive and new approach to writing post-national histories and ethnographies. Finally, Gupta demonstrates the value of using different source materials to access narratives of decolonization, analyzing the work of Mozambican photographer Ricardo Rangel, and including lyrical prose and ethnographical observations. Portuguese Decolonization in the Indian Ocean World provides a nuanced understanding of Lusophone decolonization, revealing the perspectives of people who experienced it. Hays’ Ethnographic Presents: Pioneering Anthropologists in the Papua New Guinea Highlands (1993), First Fieldwork begins where that collection left off in the 1950s and covers a broader selection of Pacific Islands societies and topics. Chapters range from candid reflections on working with little-known peoples to reflexive analyses of adapting research projects and field sites, in order to better fit local politics and concerns. Included in these accounts are the often harsh emotional and logistical demands placed on fieldworkers and interlocutors as they attempt the work of connecting and achieving mutual understandings. Evident throughout is the conviction that fieldwork and what we learn from and write about it are necessary to a robust anthropology. By demystifying a phase begun in the mid-1980s when critics considered attempts to describe fieldwork and its relation to ethnography as inevitably biased representations of the unknowable truth, First Fieldwork contributes to a renewed interest in experiential and theoretical nuances of fieldwork.Looking back on the richest of fieldwork experiences, the contributors uncover essential structures and challenges of fieldwork: connection, context, and change. What they find is that building relationships and having others include you in their lives (once referred to as “achieving rapport”) is determined as much by our subjects as by ourselves. As they examine connections made or attempted during first fieldwork and bring to bear subsequent understandings and questions—new contexts from which to view and think—about their experiences, the contributors provide readers with multidimensional perspectives on fieldwork and how it continues to inspire anthropological interpretations and commitment. A crucial dimension is change. Each chapter is richly detailed in history: theirs/ours; colonial/postcolonial; and the then and now of theory and practice. While change is ever present, specifics are not. Reflecting back, the authors demonstrate how that specificity defined their experiences and ultimately their ethnographic re/productions.

    Abstract: Dänemark verfügt wie nur wenige andere Regionen Europas mit seiner wechselvollen Geschichte und seiner Stellung zwischen Nord- und Ostsee, Mitteleuropa und Skandinavien über besondere Erfahrungen des kulturellen Austauschs. Zum dänischen Gesamtstaat gehörten einst auch Norwegen, Island, die Färöer und Grönland. Als Dänemark sich in den Napoleonischen Kriegen auf die Seite Frankreichs stellte, musste es im Kieler Frieden von 1814 Norwegen an Schweden abtreten und bekam dafür das Herzogtum Lauenburg. Angesichts neu aufflammender nationalistischer Tendenzen in Europa bietet die Betrachtung des Miteinanders im dänisch-deutschen Kulturraum interessante Perspektiven auf ethnisch motivierte Ein- und Abgrenzungen. Die Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit den wechselseitigen Beeinflussungen und den vielfältigen Aktivitäten von dänischer und deutscher Seite, ein nationales wie europäisches Bewusstsein zu fördern

    Abstract: Die mündliche Tradition von Nias begann vor ca. 600 Jahren mit der Einwanderung einer kleinen Gruppe von der Westküste Sumatras nach Südnias. Die Physiognomie der Bewohner weist oft chinesische Züge auf. Die mündliche Tradition berichtet vom Beginn der Ahnenfiguren (adu) und von der Ahnenverehrung in Gomo, Börönadu. Hier in Gomo fanden diese Einwanderer ihre erste Heimat auf Nias. Sie brachten die Sitte, das Adat-Recht, mit. Sie führten die Schmiedekunst und das Zimmermannshandwerk ein. Jetzt erst konnte sich die einzigartige Architektur der niassischen Pfahlhäuser entwickeln. Die mündliche Tradition berichtet von den Errungenschaften dieser Neuzeit. Die Saembu-Figur in Gestalt einer schönen Frau und Göttin sowie die Tigerfigur werden in Prozession umhergetragen. Bei der Feier dieser beiden Prozessionen geht es darum, die Rechtsversammlung zur Erneuerung, Formulierung und Bestätigung der beschlossenen Gesetze abzuhalten.

    Abstract: Ein Berg als Streitfall, der die Gemüter erhitzte und an dem sich die Geister schieden – darum geht es in diesem Buch. Im Zentrum des Interesses stehen die Felsstürze, die sich 1999 am Eiblschrofen bei Schwaz in Tirol ereigneten. Weil der Eintritt eines Bergsturzes nicht ausgeschlossen schien, wurden die AnrainerInnen zweier Ortsteile aus ihren Häusern evakuiert. Eine Debatte darüber begann, ob die Geschehnisse ein Naturereignis oder Menschenwerk waren. Ein Bergwerk wurde geschlossen, wenn auch nicht definitiv stillgelegt. Die „letzten Knappen Tirols“ verloren ihren Arbeitsplatz. Auf der Grundlage von Interviews und von Feld- und Archivforschungen zeichnet der Autor das Verhältnis von Berg und Leuten nach, das 1999 aus dem Gleichgewicht und in eine Schräglage, wenn nicht ins Kippen zu geraten drohte. Den Perspektiven und Praktiken von AnrainerInnen und Bergleuten gilt dabei besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Die Studie verknüpft Fragestellungen der Montanethnografie und Katastrophenforschung und erkundet Möglichkeiten und Grenzen einer ethnographisch-kulturanalytischen Auseinandersetzung mit Themen der politischen Ökologie. Als eine Fallstudie im nur zu wörtlichen Sinn setzt sie sich auch mit Berg als Nicht-Fall auseinander – mit dem Ausbleiben von Ereignissen.
