    Abstract: Was migration to Germany a blessing or a curse? The main argument of this book is that the Greek state conceived labor migration as a traineeship into Europeanization with its shiny varnish of progress. Jumping on a fully packed train to West Germany meant leaving the past behind. However, the tensed Cold War realities left no space for illusions; specters of the Nazi past and the Greek Civil War still haunted them all. Adopting a transnational approach, this monograph retargets attention to the sending state by exploring how the Greek Gastarbeiter’s welfare was intrinsically connected with their homeland through its exercise of long-distance nationalism. Apart from its fresh take in postwar migration, the book also addresses methodological challenges in creative ways. The narrative alternates between the macro- and the micro-level, including subnational and transnational actors and integrating a diverse set of primary sources and voices. Avoiding the trap of exceptionalism, it contextualizes the Greek case in the Mediterranean and Southeast European experience

    Abstract: A Badge of Injury is a contribution to both the fields of queer and global history. It analyses gay and lesbian transregional cultural communication networks from the 1970s to the 2000s, focusing on the importance of National Socialism, visual culture, and memory in the queer Atlantic. Provincializing Euro-American queer history, it illustrates how a history of concepts which encompasses the visual offers a greater depth of analysis of the transfer of ideas across regions than texts alone would offer. It also underlines how gay and lesbian history needs to be reframed under a queer lens and understood in a global perspective. Following the journey of the Pink Triangle and its many iterations, A Badge of Injury pinpoints the roles of cultural memory and power in the creation of gay and lesbian transregional narratives of pride or the construction of the historical queer subject. Beyond a success story, the book dives into some of the shortcomings of Euro-American queer history and the power of the negative, writing an emancipatory yet critical story of the era

    Abstract: Die Identität von Migrant*innen und ihre Zugehörigkeit zu einer Minderheit oder zur Mehrheitsgesellschaft ist ein kontroverses politisches Thema, das Einblicke in die Herausforderungen der Integration und des sozialen Zusammenhalts bietet. Ausgehend von einem zweidimensionalen Modell der ethnischen Identität fragt das Buch nach der Rolle des sozialen Status für die Identifikation von Migrant*innen mit ihrer Herkunftsgruppe und der Mehrheitsbevölkerung. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf Unterschieden zwischen den Generationen, der Sichtbarkeit von Migrant*innen, der Diskrepanz zwischen den Status und der Situation im Aufnahmeland. Die Ergebnisse zeigen Formen ethnischer Identität, die über die klassische Annahme der gegenseitigen Ausschließlichkeit hinausgehen, was auf eine Minderheitenidentität bei Migrant*innen mit niedrigem Status und eine Mehrheitsidentität bei Migranten mit hohem Status hindeutet. Migrants’ minority and majority identity are controversial political topics, which disclose challenges of integration and social cohesion. Based on a two-dimensional model of ethnic identity, the book asks about the role of social status for migrants’ identification with their origin group and the majority population. It focuses on intergenerational differences, migrant visibility, status mismatch, and exposure in the receiving country. Results reveal forms of ethnic identity beyond the classical assumption of mutual exclusiveness, which suggests that minority identity primarily relates to lower status positions and majority identity to higher status positions.The book thus contributes to the important discussion about migrant assimilation and alternative forms of incorporation.

In an age of mobility, borders appear to be everywhere. Encountered more and more in our everyday lives, borders locally enact global divisions and inequalities of power, wealth, and identity. This book critically examines everyday borders in the UK and Calais and shows them to be sites of ethical political struggle. From the Calais 'jungle' to the UK's 'hostile environment', it shows how borders are carried out through practices of everyday segregation that make life for some but not others unliveable.     Abstract: Afropolitan Encounters: Literature and Activism in London and Berlin explores what Afropolitanism does. Mobile people of African descent use this term to address their own lived realities creatively, which often includes countering stereotypical notions of being African. Afropolitan practices are enormously heterogeneous and malleable, which constitutes its strengths and, at the same time, creates tensions. This book traces the theoretical beginnings of Afropolitanism and moves on to explore Afropolitan practices in London and Berlin. Afropolitanism can take different forms, such as that of an identity, a political and ethical stance, a dead–end road, networks, a collective self–care practice or a strategic label. In spite of the harsh criticism, Afropolitanism is attractive for people to deal with the meanings of Africa and Africanness, questions of belonging, equal rights and opportunities. While not a unitary project, the vast variety of Afropolitan practices provide approaches to contemporary political problems in Europe and beyond. In this book, Afropolitan practices are read against the specific context of German and British colonial histories and structures of racism, the histories of Black Europeans, and contemporary right–wing resurgence in Germany and England, respectively.

    Abstract: Zusammenfassung: This book is the first epoch-spanning study on Jewish participation in the Italian women's movement, focussing in a transnational perspective on the experience of Italian-Jewish protagonists in Liberal Italy, during the First World War and the Fascist dictatorship until 1945. Drawing on ego-documents, contemporary journals and Jewish community archives, as well as records by the police and public authorities, it examines the tensions within the emancipation process between participation and exclusion. The book argues that the racial laws from 1938 did not represent the sudden end of an idyllic integration, but rather the climax of a long-term development. Social marginalization, the persecution of Jewish rights, and the assault on Jewish lives during fascism are analysed distinctly from the perspective of Jewish women. In spite of their significant influence on the transnational orientation of the Italian women's movement, their emancipation as women and Jews remained incomplete.

    Abstract: The global practice of skin bleaching is predominantly understood as an internalized legacy of colonialism and an embodiment of Western ideals of beauty. This book offers a new perspective on fair skin preference in India: it challenges the assumption that desires for light skin are always a desire of whiteness. Rather than talking back to the colonial centre, skin colour politics reorganise and reinforce social distinctions in Indian societies, which are neither exclusively local nor global. Based on primary research conducted in Delhi, this multi-dimensional study shows how skin colour intersects with and reproduces other categories of social distinction – primarily gender, class, caste, race, region and religion. It historically embeds fairness as an Indian, precolonial yet transnational ideal of beauty. The bleached body emerges as an active and thus, potentially resistant part of negotiating social status within multiple power relations and complex beauty regimes. By mapping a whole geography of skin colours in India, this book shows how fair skin as a locally embedded beauty norm and whiteness as a global cultural imperative interrelate. About the Author Nina Kullrich graduated in cultural and literary studies and currently works as project coordinator for an NGO with a focus on global justice and intersectional feminisms.

    Abstract: The present study focused on the question of why couples change their division of paid and unpaid labor when they become parents. The knowledge of changes during the transition to parenthood is well-established in previous research and quite stable in various countries. Extending this knowledge, the aim was to examine how couples, on the point of becoming mothers and fathers, perceived and explained these changes in their division of employment and housework, in what way they anticipated them, and how they explained unexpected changes. This analysis was done for West German couples as the western part of Germany is an example for the combination of a conservative welfare state that supports the male breadwinner norm, and parenthood ideals that increasingly suggest fathers’ active involvement in childcare and mothers’ labor market activity. In order to gain insight into couples’ decision-making processes, a qualitative research design was used. Both partners in fourteen couples were interviewed twice, once during the woman’s pregnancy and once about one year later. During the first interview, partners were asked about their current division of paid work and housework and its history. More importantly, they were asked about their plans concerning the division of paid work, housework, and childcare within the first year after the child’s birth and their reasoning for these plans. Following-up on the first interview, the second interview focused on the actual present division of paid work, housework, and childcare, and on changes since the previous interview. The interview guideline was informed by theoretical mechanisms of economic as well as gender and identity theories. Before the birth of their first child, both partners in each of the couples were active in the labor market. For the time after the child’s birth, the couples planned substantial changes mostly for the women’s paid work and not for the men’s. These plans were mostly realized. While a strong adult worker norm was present for men and women before the child’s birth, this was less strong for women after having their first child. In the reasonings, economic arguments and gendered explanations were common. Housework was not divided equally in most couples before the child’s birth; the female partners often did more housework and usually did more of the routine work. Most couples had no clear expectation for their division of housework after the child’s birth, but there was a notion that the partner who was supposed to do more childcare was also expected to do more housework. Accordingly, most of the male interviewees reduced their housework. The argument of available time was most often referred to. The division of childcare was planned with more detail than the division of housework during pregnancy. Most couples planned the female partner to invest more time than the male partner – which is in line with the plans for paid work. Most couples put their plans into practice after the child’s birth – at least more or less. Gendered explanations , (acquired) competencies and preferences were important in the couples’ reasoning. Paid and unpaid work are interrelated; decisions in one area influence the other. However, the findings for the three spheres revealed that paid and unpaid work were connected in different ways before the child’s birth, in the plans, and after the transition to parenthood. The study discusses limitations and policy conclusion. The most important policy conclusion is that gendered ideas about mothers’ and fathers’ share in paid work, housework, and childcare are quite prevalent, especially regarding the main responsibility for the child. Thus, policies aiming at enhancing gender equality should bear the narrative of the “Rabenmutter” and similar gendered expectations in mind since the cultural context affects the acceptance of policies.

    Abstract: Christiane Heimann provides insights on how the economic and political situation in Spain, Germany and the UK affects the institutional implementation of free labour movement and how mobile EU citizens navigate the institutional policies strategically. The study examines different profiles of EU citizens exercising free labour movement and shows ways of EU labour recruitment and transnational labour integration taking into account the institutional implementation of related EU policies. Intra-Community mobility policies and practices will be assessed in terms of their effectiveness for international recruitment and labour integration. She has conducted research and taught at the Universities in Germany, the UK, the US and Spain. Besides, she has worked in business and policy consultancy in Germany, Spain and at EU-level.

    Abstract: The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) is the central executive authority on migration and integration policy in Germany. Vinzenz Kratzer analyses the Federal Office's research output between 2005 and 2015 with a joint perspective of Ethnography and Political Science. In the wake of political reforms after the »paradigm change« around the turn of the millennium, the development of practically relevant knowledge can be traced. While governmental researchers were able to establish themselves in the bureaucracy with some success, they bought this influence with uncontroversial, depoliticized knowledge production, while the production of seemingly politically irrelevant knowledge - most importantly on racism and discrimination - is underdeveloped.

    Abstract: Food plays a central role in the production of culture and is likewise a powerful resource for the representation and organisation of social order. Status is asserted or contested through both the materiality of food (its substance, its raw economics, and its manufacture or preparation) and through its discursivity (its marketing, staging, and the way it is depicted and discussed). This intersection of materiality and discursivity makes food an ideal site for examining the place of language in contemporary class formations, and for engaging cutting-edge debates in sociolinguistics on language materiality. In this book, Gwynne Mapes integrates theories of mediatization, materiality, and authenticity in order to explore the discursive production of elite status and class inequality in food discourse.

    Abstract: Social practice theories help to challenge the often hidden paradigms, worldviews, and values at the basis of many unsustainable practices. Discourses and their boundaries define what is seen as possible, as well as the range of issues and their solutions. By exploring the connections between practices and discourses, Minna Kanerva develops a conceptual approach enabling purposive change in unsustainable social practices. Radical transformation towards new meatways is arguably necessary, yet complex psychological, ideological, and power-related mechanisms currently inhibit change.

    Abstract: Even though it is well established that academic achievement is influenced by social origin, there are still open questions regarding the underlying mechanisms of this relation. In the quantitative sociology of education, cultural capital theory is often used to narrow this research gap. The cultural capital theory describes factors that mediate and thus explain the effect of social origin on academic achievement. However, there are different interpretations of the theory that are subject to some criticism. Bourdieu's works, although they serve as the origin of many approaches to solutions, are criticized for unclear definitions and hypotheses as well as insufficient empirical evidence. The further developments and interpretations of the theory that are meanwhile in common use are also subject to considerable criticism as empirical applications show limited explanatory power, the theoretical focus on high culture is too narrow, and the interrelated concept of habitus is ignored. Although the different readings of the theory give rise to different criticisms, they offer, together and in complement with related disci-plines, the elements of a more comprehensive theory. This thesis specifies such an integrating theory that is testable with quantitative empirical methods. This is not achieved by developing a precise interpretation of Bourdieu's work or other existing theories. Rather, this revised theory consists of elements of different interpretations of the cultural capital theory, but also from psychology and educational research. The aim of the thesis is to derive a theory with a higher explanatory power than the common theory and to demonstrate this in direct empirical comparison. The theory referred to as common theory describes the elaboration based on DiMaggio (1982) and the extension by Crook (1997) and de Graaf et al. (2000). First, a theory is specified based on the answers to three basic questions. (1) How can the central terms of a useful theory of cultural capital and habitus be defined? (2) How are cultural capital and habitus acquired? (3) How does cultural capital and habitus affect academic achievement? The answers to these questions result in the revised theory. On this basis, hypotheses are formulated on the acquisition of cultural capital and habitus and their effect on academic achievement. The theory explains the effect of social origin on academic achievement via social differences in skills, knowledge, and motivational factors. They have distinctive effects or affect the ability to learn and follow school lessons or serve as explicit assessment criteria. In the common theory, social inequalities in academic achievement are accounted for by differences in high cultural characteristics and reading activities. High cultural characteristics function as means of social distinction of the upper classes, whereas reading furthers learning. Second, the hypotheses derived from the revised theory of cultural capital and habitus are tested empirically. The re-specification of the concepts is complemented by adapted operationalizations. Multiple-group path analyses using NEPS Starting Cohort 3 data are applied to test the hypotheses. Maximum likelihood estimators with robust standard errors are used and sampling strata and clustering in schools are accounted for. To avoid biased results due to item-nonresponse, multiple imputation by chained equations is utilized, creating 100 imputed data sets. Cultural capital and habitus are conceptualized as mediators of the social origin effect on academic achievement. Hence, the following question arises: (4) Do the postulated causal pathways make a significant contribution to the explanation of social inequalities in academic achievement? Based on the multiple-group path analyses, these indirect effects are tested. Third, the explanatory power of the revised and the common theory are compared regarding social inequalities in academic achievement. The underlying claim is that only if the revised theory performs better than the common theory, it is legitimate. Thus, the following question has to be answered: (5) Does the revised theory show a higher explanatory power with regard to social inequalities in academic achievement than the common theory? Therefore, the standardized indirect effects of social origin on academic achievement are compared. Moreover, the squared semi-partial correlations of social origin and academic achievement are contrasted when the mediating variables of the respective models are controlled. Summarized, the revised theory explains the effect of social origin on academic achievement considerably better than the common theory. The higher explanatory power of the revised model is based on the consideration of passive and active linguistic skills. Moreover, social distinction measured by high cultural activities does not explain the effect of social origin on academic achievement when linguistic skills are considered. Future research could address alternative characteristics that might serve as means of social distinction, for example high cultural knowledge or language use. Another field of future research could be the social differences in parenting practices that account for social differences in skills, knowledge, and motivation that affect academic achievement.

    Abstract: This study provides empirical evidence on the considerable but often unnoticed impact of EU accession on the mobility and integration of migrants from Bulgaria in Germany. Original data from a time-location sampling survey in Hamburg reveal that free movement not only induced a high level of mobility among EU citizens from Bulgaria after 2007 but also enabled their more permanent settlement in Germany. The study also provides statistical evidence that EU citizenship contributed to better legal integration of Bulgarian migrants in Germany, but national policies shaped to a greater extent their integration in terms of participation in the core areas of life. Restrictive policies such as transitional periods in the freedom of work hampered labour market integration and created more disadvantaged positions for workers. Inclusive policies such as the dual citizenship policy facilitated the naturalisation of settled migrants and led to exceptionally high naturalisation rates for Bulgarians that point to their successful integration in society. However, integration successes remain almost unnoticed in public discourse, which is dominated by the image of Bulgarian migration as a challenge.     Abstract: Die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit gibt einen Überblick über die Konzeption der System Justification Theory – eine Theorie, die besagt, dass Benachteiligte den Status quo eines Systems rechtfertigen und bekräftigen, auch auf Kosten von Eigen- und Gruppeninteressen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, im Rahmen einer konzeptuellen Klärung die Theorie von anderen verwandten Theorien abzugrenzen, Gemeinsamkeiten und wichtige Unterscheidungsmerkmale zu identifizieren. Die theoretischen Aspekte – Hypothesen und Annahmen – werden strukturiert aufgearbeitet und mit exemplarischen Studienergebnissen veranschaulicht. Zudem wird die Relevanz der System Justification Theory für die kommunikationswissenschaftliche Forschung anhand dervier Forschungsbereiche Wahlentscheidungen, Leugnung des Klimawandels, Rassismus und Sexismus verdeutlicht. Abschließend wird die Theorie einer kritischen Betrachtung unterzogen, aus der Hinweise für zukünftige Forschungsbereiche abgeleitet werden.

    Abstract: "Christopher Chitty was a graduate student and activist at UC-Santa Cruz who committed suicide in 2015. The project that Chitty left behind, entitled SEXUAL HEGEMONY, reveals how the policing of male homosexuality happened in conjunction with the establishment of capitalist economies across Europe and the U.S. Writing against a thesis of modernization in which sexual freedom advances alongside the development of commodity production and state formation, Chitty instead shows how the rise of capitalism has embedded a bourgeois sexual hegemony into property relations, economic crises, and political institutions. Drawing on queer theory, Marxism, Foucault, Gramsci, and world-systems-analysis, Chitty demonstrates that male same-sex intimacy and sex have systematically been constructed as problematic for bourgeois polities. The book begins with an introduction by Christopher Nealon that situates Chitty's work among new scholarship bringing Marxism into conversation with queer theory, and that speculates on some of the Marxist feminist texts that might have helped extend Chitty's limited analysis of lesbian and other non-male queer sexualities. Chitty's own work begins by considering Michel Foucault's idea that sexuality arises from the discourse of sexual science. Instead, Chitty argues that sexuality came into being as a result of the contradiction between the forces and relations of production inherent in the development of capitalism. The book's chapters proceed in chronological order, tracking the politicization of male homosexuality in Florence, Amsterdam, London, Paris, and New York. Chitty considers the secular offices of the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean world, which employed a sliding scale of penalties to regulate a flourishing culture of sodomy in Florence [...].

    Abstract: "This book is concerned with refugee status determination in the context of 'natural' disasters and climate change. Considering evidence that the legal predicament of people who seek recognition of refugee status in this connection has been inconsistently addressed by judicial bodies in leading refugee law jurisdictions, and identifying epistemological as well as doctrinal impediments to a clear and principled application of international refugee law in this connection, the book develops a methodlogy that is theoretically informed by decades of scholarship in disaster risk reduction and doctrinally guided by a human rights-based approach. When disasters are understood as purely reflecting the indiscriminate forces of nature, it is difficult to imagine how a person may establish a well-founded fear of being persecuted, as required by Article 1A(2) of the Refugee Convention. However, when disasters are understood as the consequence of natural hazards interacting with exposed and vulnerable social conditions, the kinds of circumstances in which a person may establish eligibility for recognition of refugee status become much clearer. However, applying the dominant human rights-based approach in the context of disasters and climate change reveals deeply rooted assumptions about the meaning of core elements of the refugee definition, and a recalibrated human rights-based interpretation of general application as developed"--

    Abstract: For decades, lesbian feminists across the United States and Canada have created information to build movements and survive in a world that doesn't want them. InInformation Activism Cait McKinney traces how these women developed communication networks, databases, and digital archives that formed the foundation for their work. Often learning on-the-fly and using everything from index cards to computers, these activists brought people and their visions of justice together to organize, store, and provide access to information. Focusing on the transition from paper to digital-based archival techniques from the 1970s to the present, McKinney shows how media technologies animate the collective and unspectacular labor that sustains social movements, including their antiracist and trans-inclusive endeavors. By bringing sexuality studies to bear on media history, McKinney demonstrates how groups with precarious access to control over information create their own innovative and resourceful techniques for generating and sharing knowledge

    Abstract: In "Discrimination in Education" leistet Sebastian E. Wenz methodische, theoretische und empirische Beiträge zur Untersuchung diskriminierenden Verhaltens von Lehrkräften gegenüber Schülerinnen und Schülern unterschiedlicher Ethnizität, sozialer Herkunft und Geschlecht. Wenz beschreibt verschiedene Motivationen zur Untersuchung von Diskriminierung innerhalb und außerhalb des Bildungswesens, diskutiert ausführlich zahlreiche Definitionen von Diskriminierung und zeigt die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Theorien aus verschiedenen Disziplinen zur Erklärung von Diskriminierung auf der individuellen Ebene und der Ungleichheit zwischen Gruppen im Bildungswesen auf. Im empirischen Teil des Buches untersucht Wenz die beiden wichtigsten Determinanten von Diskriminierung – Vorurteile und Stereotype – anhand von Daten der Allgemeinen Bevölkerungsumfrage der Sozialwissenschaften (ALLBUS) und dem Nationalen Bildungspanel (NEPS). Der wichtigste empirische Beitrag in Discrimination in Education ist eine experimentelle Studie mit einer Zufallsstichprobe von über 200 Grundschullehrkräften. Mit seinem Studiendesign adressiert Wenz verschiedene Limitationen der bisherigen Forschung. Nachdem er die vielschichtigen Ergebnisse seines Experiments diskutiert hat, macht Wenz abschließend verschiedene Vorschläge, wie zukünftige Studien weitere Evidenz zum Problemkomplex Diskriminierung im Bildungswesen sammeln können.
