Abstract: "Community planning is a path towards social progress, balancing and integrating change and maintaining valued cultural traditions and lifestyles. It brings together fields of practice and theory, too often isolated from each other. It spans community organization, urban and regional planning, design, communication, housing, employment, transport, and governance. Planning is a synthesis, drawing links between personal values, human activities, physical spaces and societal governance. Members, activists, and organizers need guidance to navigate various wants, rights, activities, funds, options, and choices to work together to create stronger, healthier, and happier communities. Planning for Community examines the accelerating impacts of social, environmental, and economic change on community life and organization and explores ways in which these changes can be anticipated, planned, and managed. It reviews and evaluates the evolving nature and challenges of place and interaction faced by traditional local communities. The author devotes chapters to understanding the values, aims, and methods of community planning and to the key operations in each of the fields of housing, work, transport, health, and environment. The final chapter offers inspiration for individuals to become more involved and influential in the lives of their local and wider communities"--

Abstract: "The science of behavioral economics explains the ways people are "predictably irrational." This book helps leaders understand how people "tick", how they react to incentives (monetary or non-monetary in nature) and what that means for working together - or against each other - at work. Understanding people is crucial for success in business and organizational life. But people are weird. The science of behavioral economics can help leaders understand the ways people are "predictably irrational" and what leaders can do about it. This book explains fascinating ways employees react to incentives (monetary or non-monetary) and what that means for teamwork - or working against each other - at work. Modern behavioral economics research is better suited than any other research direction to pursue these questions and provide answers. The author, one of the most influential economists in Germany, has been researching behavioral economics for 20 years and takes you on a journey to summarize for leaders the most important findings in the discpline, both for your own personal career, but also for the people and teams you lead"--
Abstract: Every leader should know the surprising research and strange conclusions of behavioral economics--for fairness, teamwork and productivityYou and your colleagues don't always make rational decisions. Sometimes that's a problem that leaders must address, and and sometimes that can be a good thing--when employees put their colleagues interests ahead of their own. Dr. Matthias Sutter, a leading economist from Germany's world-renowned Max Planck Institute explains the latest surprising insights based on behavioral economics research. The book explains how people tick, how they react to incentives (monetary or non-monetary in nature) and what that means for working together--or against each other--at work.Dr. Sutter summarizes new and classic behavorial science research that applies the everyday business world, so leaders can improve teams and organizations, the research-based way. Find out which factors are important for professional success, from career entry to senior management. Start your career on the right footing, advance quicker, and strategize how to meet your goals Understand what's holding your colleagues back from productivity and implement evidence-based changes Identify hidden biases in yourself and others to overcome inequalities and inefficiencies Become a better leader and decision-maker by learning to interpret people's actionsIndividuals, organizations, and teams will benefit from the often-counterintuitive wisdom in this book. Based on the author's 20 years of research--plus the findings of the world's top behavioral economists--Behavioral Economics for Leaders can help you get your team and your organization where you want to lead it

Abstract: "The Commodification Gap is an insightful institutionalist perspective on the field of gentrification studies. It is based on the empirical study of the relationship between the operation of gentrification and the institutions underpinning - but also influencing and restricting - it in three neighborhoods in London, Berlin and St. Petersburg. Matthias Bernt demonstrates how different institutional arrangements have resulted in the facilitation, deceleration or alteration of gentrification across time and place. The book is based on empirical studies conducted in Great Britain, Germany and Russia and contains one of the first-ever English language discussions of gentrification in Germany and Russia. It begins with an examination of the limits of the popular "rent-gap" theory and proposes the novel concept of the "commodification gap." It then moves on to explore how different institutional contexts in the UK, Germany and Russia have framed the conditions for these gaps to enable gentrification. The Commodification Gap is an indispensable resource for researchers and academics studying human geography, housing studies, urban sociology and spatial planning."--

Abstract: "Youth Urban Worlds: Aesthetic Political Action in Montreal grapples with the interaction between urban environments and cultures and the political process. Authors Boudreau and Rondeau argue persuasively that urban cultures challenge the very meaning and contours of the political process. With ethnographies delving into the perspectives and knowledges of racialized youth, urban farmers, and "voluntary risk takers," like dumpster divers, building climbers, and student protestors, Youth Urban Worlds theorizes aesthetics as an increasingly crucial form of political action in the contemporary urban setting. This interdisciplinary work, weaving together aspects of philosophy, critical geography, political sociology, urban anthropology, urban studies, and cultural studies, examines the centrality of fun, warmth, aesthetics, and embodiment to these youth's experiences of being in the world. Aesthetics serves as the predominant lens through which the lived reality of the subjects of the book is understood. It also explains how youth are able to practically and concretely impact the political process through the performance of risky and disruptive behavior. Moving from a contemporary history of urban Montreal from 1960, to an ethnographic description of the realities of urban youth in that city today, Youth Urban Worlds describes and explains the impact of aesthetics on the political."--

Abstract: "The cities of South Africa and Nigeria are reputed to be dangerous, teeming with slums, and dominated by the informal economy but we know little about how people are divided up, categorised and policed. Colonial governments assigned rights and punishments, banned categories considered problematic (delinquents, migrants, single women, street vendors) and give non-state organisations the power to police low-income neighbourhoods. Within this enduring legacy, a tangle of petty arrangements has developed to circumvent exclusion to public places and government offices. In this unpredictable urban reality - which has eluded all planning - individuals and social groups have changed areas of public action through exclusion, violence and negotiation. In combining historical and ethnographic methods, Classify, Exclude, Police explores the effects and limits of public action, and questions the possibility of comparison between cities often perceived as incommensurable. Focusing on state formation, urbanization, and daily lives, Laurent Fourchard addresses debates and controversies in comparative urban studies, history, political science, and urban anthropology. The book provides a systematic, comparative approach to the practices, processes, arrangements used to create boundaries, direct violence, and produce social, racial, gender, and generational differences"--

Abstract: "If we want to understand the likelihood of future societies having regular beneficial contact with living greenspace, we should examine how outdoor experiences are handled by people in their everyday lives today. As a means of exploring this wager, The unsettling outdoors spends time with a series of groups who may be subject to a process of environmental estrangement that is often barely perceptible but which could easily become more widespread. By talking with those who have ended up running on indoor treadmills, those confronted by the lack of showers at summer music festivals, those who seldom consider the spaces outside their city offices, and those faced with the intimidating prospect of a living domestic garden, this book reveals the importance of this process and provides a wealth of suggestions about the effective study of everyday life."--

Abstract: "Multicultural Education: Issues and Perspectives, 10e, is designed to help current and future educators acquire the concepts, paradigms, and explanations needed to become effective practitioners in culturally, racially, linguistically, and social-class diverse classrooms and schools. An important goal of this book is to help teachers attain a sophisticated understanding of the concept of culture and to view race, class, gender, social class, and exceptionality as interacting concepts rather than as separate and distinct. Consequently, intersectionality--or how race, class, gender, and exceptionality are fluid variables that interact in complex ways--is an overarching concept in this book. Racial, cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity presents both opportunities and challenges to educators. Diversity continues to increase in the United States. There is a wide and growing ethnic, cultural, social-class, and linguistic gap between most of the nation's teachers and their students. Teachers are faced with both the challenges and opportunities of dealing with diversity creatively and constructively in their classrooms and schools"--

Abstract: "Presented in a comprehensive manner, this book provides a comprehensive foundation in algebraic approaches for the analysis of different types of social networks such as multiple, signed, and affiliation networks. The study of such configurations corresponds to the structural analysis within the social sciences, and the methods applied for the analysis are in the areas of abstract algebra, combinatorics, and graph theory. Current research in social networks has moved toward the examination of more realistic but also more complex social relations by which agents or actors are connected in multiple ways. Addressing this trend, this book offers hands-on training of the algebraic procedures presented along with the computer package multiplex, written by the book's author specifically to perform analyses of multiple social networks. An introductory section on both complex networks and for R will feature, however the subjects themselves correspond to advanced courses on social network analysis with the specialization on algebraic models and methods."--...

Abstract: The notion of otherness, often misused, requires important conceptualization work in order for it to be considered in all of its forms, and not simply reduced to the account of others. Although otherness certainly questions the link to the other (relation), it also questions the link to the self (reflexivity) and the link to knowledge (epistemology). Being tridimensional, the process of otherness is a paradox, the meaning of which can only be drawn thanks to ethics, psychoanalytical orientation and the history of philosophical ideas. This book, which relates to philosophy of education, seeks to explain the problematic notion of otherness, the desire for which is specific to humankind. It examines how otherness questions the limits of knowledge, transmission and language, and argues that it is in fact a value, a tool and practice for all the actors involved in the relationship between education, knowledge and care

Abstract: "Mediation is a very old practice that has been reborn to meet the needs of the contemporary world. It is thus increasingly present in today's societies. This book presents the theoretical foundations of mediation, as well as the way in which teachers and researchers in Information and Communication Sciences (ICS) have taken up this concept. Whether it is communicational, informational, cultural, organizational or societal, mediation belongs to a field of research, instituted by ICS, which sees in it a process of overcoming conflict, restoring communication and deconstructing social connections. Mediation: A Concept for Information and Communication Sciences inaugurates this set through its contribution to a state of the art of the theory and concepts used by the ICS community. It is addressed to teachers, researchers and students, as well as information professionals wishing to think about their daily practice."--Page 4 of cover

Abstract: "There are plenty of books on specialized risk topics but few that deal with the broad diversity and daily applicability of this subject. Risk applications require a robust knowledge of many attributes of this seemingly simple subject. This book teaches the reader through examples and case studies the fundamental (and subtle) aspects of risk - regardless of the specific situation. The text allows the reader to understand the concept of risk analysis while not getting too involved in the mathematics; in this method the reader can apply these techniques across a wide range of situations. The second edition includes new examples from NASA and several other industries as well as new case studies from legal databases. The many real-life discussion topics enable the reader to form an understanding of the concepts of risk and risk management and apply them to day-to-day issues"--
