    Abstract: This book contributes to a growing body of work celebrating the visual methods and tools that aid knowledge transfer and welcome new audiences to social science research.     Abstract: A focus on methods can currently be observed in all subfields of linguistics. Rarely, however, is a perspective taken that integrates these individual sub-areas. The book brings together the current discussion of methods and assembles contributions that move along the spectrum of ethnography, mixed methods, and digital humanities and are framed by method(olog)ic reflections that the contributors have undertaken together
    Abstract: In allen Teilbereichen der Linguistik ist derzeit ein Fokus auf Methoden zu beobachten. Selten wird jedoch eine diese einzelnen Teilbereiche integrierende Perspektive auf Methoden und v.a. auch auf Methodologie eingenommen. Der Band unternimmt vor diesem Hintergrund den Versuch, die aktuellen Diskussionen um die Methodik der Linguistik, die sich aus den unterschiedlichen Methodeninnovationen der letzten Jahrzehnte ergaben, zu bündeln. Entwicklungen wie die verstärkte Software- und Datenorientierung, die methodische Vielfalt in Projektkooperationen oder der Trend zu ethnographischen Ansätzen werden in einer Reihe methodisch sehr unterschiedlicher Studien reflektiert. Sie haben jedoch alle gemein, dass sie auf ihre Weise traditionelle Grenzen linguistischer Methodik überschreiten; mögen diese intra- oder interdisziplinärer Natur sein. Rahmende Beiträge betten diese Studien in einen Diskussionszusammenhang ein, der für eine methodologische Reintegration der linguistischen Teildisziplinen plädiert. Insofern will der Band ein Anstoß sein. Einen ersten Versuch einer solchermaßen integrierenden Diskussion dokumentiert der Band mit Respondenzen auf dieses Plädoyer einerseits und andererseits mit zwölf zusammenführenden Thesen zur aktuellen Lage der linguistischen Methodendiskussion

    Abstract: In allen Teilbereichen der Linguistik ist derzeit ein Fokus auf Methoden zu beobachten. Selten wird jedoch eine diese einzelnen Teilbereiche integrierende Perspektive auf Methoden und v.a. auch auf Methodologie eingenommen. Der Band unternimmt vor diesem Hintergrund den Versuch, die aktuellen Diskussionen um die Methodik der Linguistik, die sich aus den unterschiedlichen Methodeninnovationen der letzten Jahrzehnte ergaben, zu bündeln. Entwicklungen wie die verstärkte Software- und Datenorientierung, die methodische Vielfalt in Projektkooperationen oder der Trend zu ethnographischen Ansätzen werden in einer Reihe methodisch sehr unterschiedlicher Studien reflektiert. Sie haben jedoch alle gemein, dass sie auf ihre Weise traditionelle Grenzen linguistischer Methodik überschreiten; mögen diese intra- oder interdisziplinärer Natur sein. Rahmende Beiträge betten diese Studien in einen Diskussionszusammenhang ein, der für eine methodologische Reintegration der linguistischen Teildisziplinen plädiert. Insofern will der Band ein Anstoß sein. Einen ersten Versuch einer solchermaßen integrierenden Diskussion dokumentiert der Band mit Respondenzen auf dieses Plädoyer einerseits und andererseits mit zwölf zusammenführenden Thesen zur aktuellen Lage der linguistischen Methodendiskussion. A focus on methods can currently be observed in all subfields of linguistics. Rarely, however, is a perspective taken that integrates these individual sub-areas.     Abstract: Wer unsere heutige Medienwirklichkeit verstehen will, kommt nicht umhin, sich mit den Technologien rund um Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) und Algorithmen auseinanderzusetzen. Folgerichtig hat sich in jüngerer Zeit innerhalb der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften ein Forschungsstrang entwickelt, der diese Technologien - zumeist aus kritisch-interventionistischer Perspektive - ins Zentrum rückt. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich dagegen "postkritisch" und "bottom-up" den gesellschaftlichen Selbstbeobachtungen im Hinblick auf die KI-Technologien im öffentlichen Diskurs und entwickelt für deren Erforschung das Programm einer Medienkulturrhetorik. Dieses Programm bringt Kulturwissenschaft und Rhetorik zusammen, um die Handlungsmöglichkeiten spätmoderner Subjekte im "KI-Zeitalter" zu ergründen, und wird im Rahmen einer empirischen Fallstudie zur massenmedialen Berichterstattung über KI und der Auseinandersetzung mit ebendieser in den sozialen Medien am Beispiel Facebook erprobt. Anspruch dieser Untersuchung ist es, sowohl einen Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung kulturwissenschaftlicher Methodologie als auch für ein tieferes Verständnis unserer Kulturen zu leisten und dabei zugleich Anknüpfungspunkte für die (didaktische) Praxis zu bieten.

    Abstract: "This book explores the growing tension between multilingualism and monolingualism in the European Union in the wake of Brexit, underpinned by the interplay between the rise of English as a lingua franca and the low status of translations in EU bodies, agencies and institutions. The book draws on an interdisciplinary approach highlighting insights from such fields as sociolinguistics, translation studies, and philosophy of language in looking at data drawn from official EU documents and online resources, many of which are increasingly initially produced in English and then translated into other languages, but not published as translations. Against this background, Heinrichsmeier presents the results of her two-year sociolinguistic study examining how a group of older women of different ages negotiated their way through their own and others' expectations of ageing and constructed different kinds of older - and other - identities for themselves. Through vivid and nuanced analysis of their chat and practices in a small village hair salon, Heinrichsmeier reveals these women's subtle and skilful manipulation of stereotypes of ageing and the impact of the evolving talk on their identity constructions.     Abstract: "Literacy and Second Language Learning for the Linguistic Integration of Adult Migrants (LASLLIAM)" is a new reference guide of the Council of Europe. It was developed by a group of experts and the Council of Europe Education Department to support high-quality learning environments for non- and low-literate migrants. Language skills foster, among others, social inclusion, and access to education and employment. Within this context, non-literate or low-literate migrants have specific educational needs, as they must learn a second language while either learning to read and write for the first time or developing basic literacy competences in an alphabet or writing system sometimes different from the one they will have learned initially. When it comes to language or knowledge of society courses, these needs are rarely taken into consideration, and this group of migrants is rarely offered a sufficient number of hours to reach the language level required. This is why LASLLIAM has been conceived: it aims at supporting language educators, curriculum designers and language policymakers in their endeavour to design, implement, evaluate and improve curricula tailored toward the specific needs of the target learners.

    Abstract: "Cybermobbing ist ein spezifischer Typ digitaler Gewalt, der vor allem unter Kindern und Jugendlichen vorkommt und in den Fokus der breiten Öffentlichkeit geraten ist. Die Cybermobbing-Forschung ist geprägt von zahlreichen sozialpsychologischen und medienwissenschaftlichen Studien. Eine linguistische Beschäftigung mit konkretem Sprachmaterial stand jedoch bis heute aus. Im vorliegenden Buch wird anhand vieler authentischer Beispiele erörtert, wie sich Cybermobbing im Netz zeigt, in welchen Formvarianten es als kommunikatives Phänomen in Erscheinung tritt und wie die Spezifik der Online-Kommunikation in der virtuellen Welt Einfluss auf die spezifischen Prozesse dieser verbalen Gewalt nimmt. Umfangreiche Detailanalysen helfen, die Spezifik des Emotionspotenzials dieser Texte besser zu verstehen. Das Buch ist einerseits für die spezifische Medialität digitaler Kommunikation und somit die Medienlinguistik allgemein äusserst relevant, andererseits bildet es einen wichtigen Referenzpunkt für künftige Untersuchungen anderer Formen verbaler Gewalt in der digitalen Kommunikation wie auch in anderen Kommunikationsformen"--

    Abstract: "Aus sprachwissenschaftlicher Sicht liegt in der Untersuchung von massenmedialen TV-Formaten,die von Fernsehschaffenden und der Medienwissenschaft als Infotainment bezeichnet werden, eine Forschungslücke vor. Es ist bislang nichts darüber bekannt, wie die Interagierenden in solchen Sendungen situativ mit den massenmedialen Anforderungen von Informationsvermittlung und Entertainment umgehen. Die Untersuchung geht auf der Basis von 40 Stunden Sendematerial einer bekannten deutschen Kochsendung der Frage nach, mittels welcher verbalen sowie körperlich-visuellen Verfahren die Beteiligten die mediale Gattung situativ als Infotainment hervorbringen. Zu diesem Zweck wird rekonstruiert, wie die Interagierenden die für die Sendung konstitutiven Aktivitäten "Informieren", "Belehren" und "Bewerten" durchführen, um den Anforderungen der Gattung im Spannungsfeld von Informationsvermittlung und Entertainment zu begegnen. Die Untersuchung leistet so einen Beitrag zur multimodalen Fundierung einer linguistischen Analyse von konversationellen Aktivitäten und zeigt Perspektiven für eine Weiterentwicklung einer gesprächsanalytisch arbeitenden Medienlinguistik auf"--

    Abstract: The concept of authenticity has received some attention in recent academic discourse, yet it has often been left under-defined from a sociolinguistic perspective. This volume presents the contributions of a wide range of scholars who exchanged their views on the topic at a conference in Freiburg, Germany, in November 2011. The authors address three leading questions: What are the local meanings of authenticity embedded in large cultural and social structures? What is the meaning of linguistic authenticity in delocalised and/or deterritorialised settings? How is authenticity indexed in other contexts of language expression (e.g. in writing or in political discourse)? These questions are tackled by recognised experts in the fields of sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and contact linguistics. While by no means exhaustive, the volume offers a large array of case studies that contribute significantly to our understanding of the meaning of authenticity in language production and perception.

    Abstract: Biographical note: Stephan Conermann (Prof. Dr.) ist Professor für Islamwissenschaft an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Bonn. Zu seinen Forschungsschwerpunkten zählen Transformationsprozesse in islamischen Gesellschaften, narrative Strategien in vormodernen Texten muslimischer Autoren, der Islam in Indien bis zur Neuzeit, Kultur und Geschichte der Mamlukenzeit und die deutsche Orientalistik im Spannungsfeld kulturwissenschaftlicher Methodenvielfalt.
    Abstract: Die Kultur- und Geisteswissenschaften durchlaufen derzeit einen fundamentalen Wandlungsprozess: Mit den neuen Herausforderungen der Globalisierung werden europäische geisteswissenschaftliche Kategorien zunehmend in Frage gestellt und neu reflektiert. Insbesondere die »Kleinen Fächer« werden sich angesichts dessen nur behaupten können, wenn sie sich innovativen kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen öffnen, die die gegenwärtigen globalen Zustände kritisch zu durchdringen vermögen. Die Beiträge des Bandes zeigen, inwieweit die »Kleinen Fächer« tatsächlich bereit sind, diesen »Cultural Turn« zu vollziehen, inwiefern eine kulturwissenschaftliche Ausrichtung diese Fächer stärkt und fragen, ob eine solch verbindende Perspektive disziplinenübergreifend zur Orientierung verhilft.

    Abstract: Sowohl der Begriff als auch die Vorstellung von »Kultur« verändern sich aktuell radikal. Intellektuelle aus allen Disziplinen sind damit befasst, eine Neubestimmung und -positionierung von »Kultur« vorzunehmen. Im Zeitalter von Globalisierung und Migration ist die Vorstellung von einer zugleich an ein Volk, eine Nation und an einen spezifischen Ort gebundenen Kultur im Herder'schen Sinne offenbar obsolet geworden. Man versucht vielmehr, die Fluidität, die Dynamik und die Grenzüberschreitungen zwischen Kulturen zu begreifen. Die Beiträge in diesem Band zeigen, dass das Konzept der Transkulturalität, welches zunehmend sowohl die Interkulturalitäts-Studien als auch die Postcolonial Studies als kulturwissenschaftliches Paradigma ablöst, hierfür einen methodischen Ansatzpunkt bietet.

    Abstract: The phenomenon of multimodality has, as Jewitt observes, generated interest "across many disciplines...against the backdrop of considerable social change." Contemporary societies are grappling with the social implications of the rapid increase in sophistication and range of multimodal practices, particularly within interactive digital media, so that the study of multimodality also becomes essential within an increasing range of practical domains. As a result of this increasing interest in multimodality, scholars, teachers and practitioners are on the one hand uncovering many different issues arising from its study, such as those of theory and methodology, while also exploring multimodality within an increasing range of domains. Such an increase and range of interest in multimodality heralds the emergence of a distinct multimodal studies field: as both the mapping of a domain of enquiry, and as the site of the development of theories, descriptions and methodologies specific to and adapted for the study of multimodality. The present volume presents a range of works by an impressive international roster of contributors who both explore issues arising from the study of multimodality and explore the scope of this emerging field within specific domains of multimodal phenomena. Contributors aim to show that each individual work and works in general within multimodal studies represent a dialectic or complementarity between the exploration of issues of general significance to multimodal studies and the exploration of specific domains of multimodality; while characterizing specific works as tending to some degree towards one or other of these main areas of focus. Such a characterization is seen as part of a move towards the identification and thus development of a distinct field of multimodal studies.

    Abstract: Imagination in Gesprächen: aus gesprächsanalytischer Perspektive wird ein mentales Phänomen untersucht. Analysiert werden Sequenzen aus Interaktionen, in denen die Sprecher Rollen von Figuren übernehmen, deren Äußerungen animieren und sich in eine imaginierte Szene hineinversetzen. Imagination wird als konversationelle Aktivität und als mentales Phänomen der Herstellung einer gemeinsamen Kognition verstanden. Die Studie leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Thema ‚Imagination‘ und verbindet auf beeindruckende Weise die Forschungsbereiche Interaktionale Linguistik und Kognitive Semantik.Imagination in conversations: This book explores a mental phenomenon from a conversation analytic perspective. It analyses sequences from interactions in which the speakers assume the roles of characters, animate what they say and put themselves in an imagined scene. Imagination is understood as conversational activity and mental phenomenon to establish a shared cognition.     Abstract: Volume 4 includes unique records of Orok (Uilta), a Tungusic language (dictionaries, texts, grammatical comments) noted down by Pilsudski directly from native informants at the beginning of the 20th century on Sakhalin. The original source material is identified with the help of - and confronted against - all the existing contemporary dictionaries with the assistance of leading specialists in the field (the Novosibirsk Avrorin group, also called the school of Manchu-Tungusologists). Abundant comparative data are quoted. All necessary introductory information and commentaries of ethnographic, historical, and linguistic nature are provided. Archival photos taken by Pilsudski are juxtaposed with related contemporary photos especially taken for this purpose. In addition, samples of original manuscript pages are reproduced. Bibliographical data and indices are provided in conformity with the previous volumes.
