    Abstract: Kaum eine gesellschaftliche Domäne scheint heute mehr zu existieren, in der man nicht partout erfolgreich zu sein hat. Woher rührt der Siegeszug dieser Leitorientierung? Welche sozialen Voraussetzungen und Folgen hat das zusehends allgegenwärtige Motto: Erfolg um jeden Preis?     Abstract: In 14 bislang unveröffentlichten Essays entwickelt der britische Soziologe Martin Albrow seine These vom 'Globalen Zeitalter', die er zuerst in den 1990er Jahren vortrug, um das Neue an unserer Epoche zu kennzeichnen. Anregungen von Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, Arnold Toynbee und Norbert Elias gehen dabei in einen globalen Diskurs ein, der einen neuen Zugang sucht zu bleibenden menschlichen Dilemmata im Zusammenhang mit Glaube, Gerechtigkeit und Verantwortung. Auch wenn der Autor die Überzeugung von der Unabwendbarkeit von Globalisierung und Amerikanisierung nicht teilt, vertritt er doch die Auffassung, der Entwurf unserer Zeit als von dem Phänomenen der Globalisierung geprägt beinhalte die Notwendigkeit einer kollektiven Antwort auf die Herausforderungen, die sich der Menschheit heute stellen. Die Hoffnung auf eine menschliche Zukunft beruht auf einer normativen Ordnung der globalen Gesellschaft, einer Weltregierung, die es den disparaten lokalen, nationalen und globalen Kulturen erlaubt, zu koexistieren und zu prosperieren.
    Abstract: In 14 previously unpublished essays British sociologist Martin Albrow develops the Global Age thesis that he first proposed in the 90s to capture the novelty of our own epoch. He absorbs insights from Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, Arnold Toynbee and Norbert Elias into a global discourse that shapes new approaches to abiding human dilemmas of faith, justice and responsibility. Even in resisting the idea that globalization and Americanization are inevitable he argues that framing our time as global promotes a collective response to the challenges facing humankind. The hope for a human future depends on a normative ordering of global society, on global governance that allows local, national and global cultures to co-exist and thrive.

The authors foreground the complex hybridity of literary genres and social milieus, capturing elements that have eluded traditional literary history.     Description / Table of Contents: "Aspirations, desires, opportunism and exploitation are fundamental elements of the ways in which donor-driven development intervenes in the lives of people in poor countries. Alongside structural and material interventions, emotional engagements are central to processes of social change and the making of selves for those caught up in development's slipstream. Intimate Economies of Development: Mobility, Sexuality and Health in Asia elaborates this proposition by showing that culture, sexuality and health are inevitably and inseparably linked within specific trajectories of modernization in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. As mobility and migration increase and opportunities proliferate throughout Asia, different cultural groups increasingly interact as a result of both targeted interventions and all-consuming trends of socio-economic change; but they do so with different capabilities and expectations. This book engages with issues of moral frameworks and sexual rights discourses but uniquely grounds its arguments in interlocking details of people's everyday lives and aspirations in developing Asia. Part and parcel of this widening landscape of mobility and contingent intimacy is the ever-present threats of infectious disease, most prominently HIV/AIDS, and people-trafficking. Thus, impact assessment and targeted interventions aiming to address negative consequences frequently accompany infrastructure development. This path-breaking book, drawn on more than 20 years of ethnographic research in the Mekon region, shows clearly how current models of mitigation are inadequate as subjective experiences and aspirations are profoundly enmeshed in strategies of livelihood improvement."--

Vor dem Hintergrund einer Ideengeschichte von Melancholie und Depression entwickelt Konstantin Ingenkamp dazu eine eigene, kulturwissenschaftlich informierte Perspektive, die sich sowohl gegen die immer stärkere Pathologisierung als auch gegen die verbreitete These wendet, dass psychische Erkrankungen immer weiter zunehmen.Stattdessen wird Depression als ein zur Conditio humana gehörender Gemütszustand beleuchtet, der sich als Kehrseite des »Positiven Denkens« in den protestantischen Erweckungsbewegungen des 19. Jahrhunderts ebenso wiederfinden lässt wie als Gegenbegriff zur »mentalen Gesundheit« während des Kalten Krieges. Erst mit dem Boom der Psychopharmaka in der zeitgenössischen »Gesundheitsgesellschaft«, so zeigt der Autor, wird die Depression zur Volkskrankheit.
    Abstract: How and why did depression become an epidemic disease? Based on a conceptual history of melancholy and depression, Konstantin Ingenkamp develops his own perspective, which is well-founded in cultural science. It is directed against the increasing pathologizing as well as against the wide-spread thesis that mental illnesses are constantly increasing.Instead, depression is viewed as a state of mind that is part of the human condition and that can be found as the opposite of »positive thinking« in protestant awakening movements of the 19th century, and also as a counter term of »mental health« during the cold war. Only with the boom of psychotropic drugs in the contemporary »health society« does depression become an epidemic disease, as the author shows.

    Abstract: "Religion and Democratization is a comparative study of how regime types and religion-state arrangements frame questions of religious and political identities in Muslim and Catholic societies. The book proposes a theory for modeling the dynamics of "Religiously Friendly Democratization" processes in which states institutionally favor specific religious values and organizations and allow religious political parties to contest elections. Religiously friendly democratization has a transformative effect on both the democratic politics and religious life of society. The book explains this transformation as a function of religiously friendly democratization's effects on the political goals of religious leaders and the political salience of the religious identities of religious individuals. In a religiously charged national setting, as scholars working on the inclusion-moderation hypothesis have argued, religiously friendly democratization can generate more support for democracy among religious actors. By embedding religious ideas and values into its institutions, however, religiously friendly democratization also mediates the effects of secularization on national religious markets, creating more favorable conditions for the emergence of public religions and new trajectories of religious life. The book anchors its theoretical claims in case studies of Italy and Algeria, integrating original qualitative evidence and statistical data on voters' political and religious attitudes. It also considers the dynamics of religiously friendly democratization across the Muslim world today, through a comparative analysis of Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey and Indonesia"--

    Abstract: "One of the most vexing problems in the theory and practice of politics is the issue of difference. How do we build a just and stable polity in the face of identity differences that have historically been the basis for inequality, injustice, and violence? Such differences can take a variety of forms, including religious difference, race and ethnicity, language difference, urban/rural tensions, and gender. In many countries, divisions such as these are the fault lines that threaten the stability of the social and legal order. This book addresses the role of constitutions and constitutionalism in dealing with the challenge of difference. In the spring of 2011, a conference held at Indiana University brought together a distinguished group of lawyers, political scientists, historians, religious studies scholars, and area studies experts to consider how constitutions and constitutionalism address issues of difference across a wide swath of the world we called "Pan-Asia." Pan-Asia runs from the Middle East, through Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and into Oceania. This is a meta-region across which ideas and influences have traveled for centuries. It is also an area of the world that includes every type of difference in abundant supply. Pan-Asia, therefore, provides a wonderful laboratory for examining the role of constitutions in addressing difference. The existing literatures, while rich in other ways, do not speak directly to this issue of constitutions as a mechanism for addressing difference.     Abstract: "This book focuses on the return of the diasporic Greek second generation to Greece, primarily in the first decade of the twenty-first century, and their evolving, often ambivalent, senses of belonging and conceptualizations of 'home.' Drawing from a large-scale research project employing a multi-sited and multi-method comparative approach, Counter-Diaspora is a narrative ethnographic account of the lives and identities of second-generation Greek-Americans and Greek-Germans. Through an interdisciplinary gender and generational lens, the study examines lived migration experiences at three diasporic moments: growing up within the Greek diasporic setting in the United States and Germany; motivations for the counter-diasporic return; and experiences in the 'homeland' of Greece. Research documents and analyzes a range of feelings and experiences associated with this 'counter-diasporic' return to the ancestral homeland. Images and imaginations of the 'homeland' are discussed and deconstructed, along with notions of 'Greekness' mediated through diasporic encounters. Using extensive extracts from interviews, the authors explore the roles of, among other things, family solidarity, kinship, food, language, and religion, as well as the impact of 'home-coming' visits on the decision to return to the ancestral 'homeland.'     Abstract: Main description: Wie und warum wurde Depression zur Volkskrankheit? Vor dem Hintergrund einer Ideengeschichte von Melancholie und Depression entwickelt Konstantin Ingenkamp dazu eine eigene, kulturwissenschaftlich informierte Perspektive, die sich sowohl gegen die immer stärkere Pathologisierung als auch gegen die verbreitete These wendet, dass psychische Erkrankungen immer weiter zunehmen. Stattdessen wird Depression als ein zur Conditio humana gehörender Gemütszustand beleuchtet, der sich als Kehrseite des »Positiven Denkens« in den protestantischen Erweckungsbewegungen des 19. Jahrhunderts ebenso wiederfinden lässt wie als Gegenbegriff zur »mentalen Gesundheit« während des Kalten Krieges. Erst mit dem Boom der Psychopharmaka in der zeitgenössischen »Gesundheitsgesellschaft«, so zeigt der Autor, wird die Depression zur Volkskrankheit.

    Abstract: The sectional conflict over slavery in the United States was not only a clash between labour systems and political ideologies but also a viscerally felt part of the lives of antebellum Americans. This book contributes to the growing field of emotions history by exploring how specific emotions shaped Americans' perceptions of, and responses to, the sectional conflict in order to explain why it culminated in disunion and war. Emotions from indignation to jealousy were inextricably embedded in antebellum understandings of morality, citizenship, and political affiliation. Their arousal in the context of political debates encouraged Northerners and Southerners alike to identify with antagonistic sectional communities and to view the conflicts between them as worth fighting over. Michael E. Woods synthesizes two schools of thought on Civil War causation: the fundamentalist, which foregrounds deep-rooted economic, cultural, and political conflict, and the revisionist, which stresses contingency, individual agency, and collective passion
