    Abstract: Why technology is not an end in itself, and how cities can be “smart enough,” using technology to promote democracy and equity. Smart cities, where technology is used to solve every problem, are hailed as futuristic urban utopias. We are promised that apps, algorithms, and artificial intelligence will relieve congestion, restore democracy, prevent crime, and improve public services. In The Smart Enough City, Ben Green warns against seeing the city only through the lens of technology; taking an exclusively technical view of urban life will lead to cities that appear smart but under the surface are rife with injustice and inequality. He proposes instead that cities strive to be “smart enough”: to embrace technology as a powerful tool when used in conjunction with other forms of social change—but not to value technology as an end in itself. In a technology-centric smart city, self-driving cars have the run of downtown and force out pedestrians, civic engagement is limited to requesting services through an app, police use algorithms to justify and perpetuate racist practices, and governments and private companies surveil public space to control behavior. Green describes smart city efforts gone wrong but also smart enough alternatives, attainable with the help of technology but not reducible to technology: a livable city, a democratic city, a just city, a responsible city, and an innovative city. By recognizing the complexity of urban life rather than merely seeing the city as something to optimize, these Smart Enough Cities successfully incorporate technology into a holistic vision of justice and equity

    Abstract: "The number of bicyclists are increasing in the United States, especially among the working class and people of color. In contrast to the demographics of bicyclists in the United States, advocacy for bicycling has focused mainly on the interests of white, upwardly mobile bicyclists, leading to neighborhood conflicts and accusations of racist planning. In Bike Lanes Are White Lanes, scholar Melody L. Hoffmann argues that the bicycle has varied cultural meaning as a "rolling signifier." That is, the bicycle's meaning changes in different spaces, with different people, and in different cultures. The rolling signification of the bicycle contributes to building community, influences gentrifying urban planning, and upholds systemic race and class barriers. In this study of three prominent U.S. cities--Milwaukee, Portland, and Minneapolis--Hoffmann examines how the burgeoning popularity of urban bicycling is trailed by systemic issues of racism, classism, and displacement. From a pro-cycling perspective, Bike Lanes Are White Lanes highlights many problematic aspects of urban bicycling culture and its advocacy as well as positive examples of people trying earnestly to bring their community together through bicycling.     Abstract: Cities play a pivotal but paradoxical role in the future of our planet. As world leaders and citizens grapple with the consequences of growth, pollution, climate change, and waste, urban sustainability has become a ubiquitous catchphrase and a beacon of hope. Yet, we know little about how the concept is implemented in daily life - particularly with regard to questions of social justice and equity. This volume provides a unique and vital contribution to ongoing conversations about urban sustainability by looking beyond the promises, propaganda, and policies associated with the concept in order to explore both its mythic meanings and the practical implications in a variety of everyday contexts. The authors present ethnographic studies from cities in eleven countries and six continents. Each chapter highlights the universalized assumptions underlying interpretations of sustainability while elucidating the diverse and contradictory ways in which people understand, incorporate, advocate for, and reject sustainability in the course of their daily lives.

    Abstract: Our continued use of the combustion engine car in the 21st century, despite many rational arguments against it, makes it more and more difficult to imagine that transport has a sustainable future. Offering a sweeping transatlantic perspective, this book explains the current obsession with automobiles by delving deep into the motives of early car users. It provides a synthesis of our knowledge about the emergence and persistence of the car, using a broad range of material including novels, poems, films, and songs to unearth the desires that shaped our present "car society." Combining social, psychological, and structural explanations, the author concludes that the ability of cars to convey transcendental experience, especially for men, explains our attachment to the vehicle.

    Abstract: How do we accommodate a growing urban population in a way that is sustainable, equitable, and inviting? This question is becoming increasingly urgent to answer as we face diminishing fossil-fuel resources and the effects of a changing climate while global cities continue to compete to be the most vibrant centers of culture, knowledge, and finance. Jan Gehl has been examining this question since the 1960s, when few urban designers or planners were thinking about designing cities for people. But given the unpredictable, complex and ephemeral nature of life in cities, how can we best design public infrastructurevital to cities for getting from place to place, or staying in placefor human use? Studying city life and understanding the factors that encourage or discourage use is the key to designing inviting public space. In How to Study Public Life Jan Gehl and Birgitte Svarre draw from their combined experience of over 50 years to provide a history of public-life study as well as methods and tools necessary to recapture city life as an important planning dimension. This type of systematic study began in earnest in the 1960s, when several researchers and journalists on different continents criticized urban planning for having forgotten life in the city. City life studies provide knowledge about human behavior in the built environment in an attempt to put it on an equal footing with knowledge about urban elements such as buildings and transport systems. Studies can be used as input in the decision-making process, as part of overall planning, or in designing individual projects such as streets, squares or parks. The original goal is still the goal today: to recapture city life as an important planning dimension.     Abstract: In Frankreich und Deutschland werden in den 1970er bzw. 1990er Jahren mit der politique de la ville und der Sozialen Stadt quartiersbezogene Förderprogramme etabliert. In beiden Ländern werden vielfach Quartiere gefördert, die als solche mit hohem „Migrantenanteil" beschrieben werden. Während in der Sozialen Stadt Migranten zu einer zentralen Zielgruppe geworden sind, werden sie in der politique de la ville auf nationaler Ebene nicht explizit erfasst - geschuldet dem französischen Ideal der égalité, der Gleichbehandlung aller. Es scheint damit deutliche Unterschiede zu geben, wie „kulturelle Differenzierungen" - aktuell bedeutsame Gesellschaftsdifferenzierungen nach Kategorien wie Staatsangehörigkeit und „Ethnie" - „problematisiert" werden. Ein Vergleich der Stadtpolitiken zeigt allerdings, dass sich vor allem auf lokaler Ebene transnational übereinstimmende politische Logiken nachzeichnen lassen, die sich in verschiedenen Handlungsstrategien widerspiegeln und wirkmächtig werden.​.

    Abstract: »Zuhause«: jeder kennt es, jeder hat eins, etwas so Selbstverständliches hat es immer schon gegeben. – Wirklich? Oder gehört der private Haushalt als Ort der Familie zu den Neuerfindungen des innovativen 19. Jahrhunderts? Was bedeuteten Ernährung, Hygiene, Gesundheit, Liebe, Erziehung, Frömmigkeit und Bildung für den Haushalt um 1800 – und was bedeuteten sie um 1900? Zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts waren Möbel, Kleidung und Küchengeräte Einzelstücke. Gegen Ende des Jahrhunderts gab es bereits Massenprodukte, Maschinen und Wegwerfartikel in den wohlhabenderen Haushalten. Auch der familiäre Gefühlshaushalt revolutionierte sich grundlegend. Kindheit und Jugend bildeten sich als eigene Lebensphasen überhaupt erst aus. Zwischen Biedermeier und vorfabrizierten Küchenprodukten eröffnet sich das historische Spannungsfeld von Privatisierung und Industrialisierung des häuslichen Alltags, von Intimisierung und zugleich Standardisierung des Familienlebens. Die Autoren des Katalogs zur Ausstellung, die vom 9. April bis 28. August 2011 im Museum für Kunst und Technik des 19. Jahrhunderts Baden-Baden gezeigt wird, widmen sich dem Wandel der Beziehung zwischen den Gegenständen und praktischen Abläufen im Haushalt einerseits und ihrer technischen, künstlerischen oder religiösen Deutung andererseits im Verlauf des 19. Jahrhunderts. In der Gegenüberstellung von historischen Alltagsgeräten mit Gemälden fragen Ausstellung und Katalog: Wie interpretierten die Ingenieure, wie die bildenden Künstler den tief greifenden Wandel des häuslichen Lebens?

    Abstract: Jede Stadt ist anders. Das liegt nicht nur an charakteristischen Bauweisen oder einmaligen Sehenswürdigkeiten.
