    Abstract: "This book focuses on the female slaves of the Ottoman imperial court who lived in the imperial harem between the second half of the seventeenth century and the end of the eighteenth, and who were later manumitted and transferred from the palace. Through an analysis of a wide range of hitherto unexplored archival and historical sources, it aims to explore the various aspects of female palace slaves' lives. The book's main argument is that the manumission of female palace slaves and their departure from the palace did not mean the severing of their ties with the imperial court; rather, it signaled the beginning of a new kind of relationship that would continue in various ways until their death. This evolving relationship had implications for several parties, including the manumitted female palace slaves, the imperial court, and urban society. By tracing these women's ongoing relations with the imperial court and patronage networks after their time in the harem, this book aims to reconstruct the lives of manumitted female palace slaves in an attempt to recapture what it meant to be a palace woman in the Ottoman world. It also explores the roles and places that palace women held in the imperial court. In doing so, it offers not just a new way of understanding the workings of the imperial court, but also a new way of understanding the lives of the actors within it"--

This book explores the role biology, psychology, economics, ideology, and coercion play in one's experience of fighting, emphasising the cultural and historical variability of combativeness. By drawing from numerous historical and contemporary examples from all over the world, Malešević demonstrates how social pugnacity is a relational and contextual phenomenon that possesses autonomous features.

    Abstract: Die Demokratie Nachkriegsdeutschlands ist gemeinhin untersucht worden, als hätte sie sich wie ein Phönix als Zivilgesellschaft aus der Asche des Zusammenbruchs des Nationalsozialismus erhoben. Aber die Geschichte war ganz anders. Man muß die Demokratisierung Deutschlands durch die amerikanische Besatzungsherrschaft anhand der originalen Dokumente nachzeichnen, um zu zeigen, welch spannende Dinge sich tatsächlich in der Stunde Null, dem (nicht nur) metaphorischen Wendepunkt der deutschen Geschichte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, ereignet haben. Uta Gerhardt befaßt sich anhand der konkreten Vorgaben, die damals die Politik bestimmten, mit den Programmperspektiven der amerikanischen Besatzungsherrschaft. Trotz seines zeitgeschichtlichen Stoffs handelt es sich aber um ein am Denken Max Webers geschultes soziologisches Buch, in dessen Zentrum die Frage steht, wie es mittels einer Herrschaft des Übergangs binnen kurzer Zeit gelingen kann, eine von Diktatur geprägte Gesellschaft in eine demokratische zu transformieren - eine Frage, die heute mehr denn je aktuell ist.

In so doing, İpşirli Argıt offers not just a new way of understanding the internal politics and dynamics of the Ottoman imperial court, but also a new way of understanding the lives of the actors within it.

    Abstract: Drawing on evolutionary epistemology, process ontology, and a social-cognition approach, this book suggests cognitive evolution, an evolutionary-constructivist social and normative theory of change and stability of international social orders. It argues that practices and their background knowledge survive preferentially, communities of practice serve as their vehicle, and social orders evolve. As an evolutionary theory of world ordering, which does not borrow from the natural sciences, it explains why certain configurations of practices organize and govern social orders epistemically and normatively, and why and how these configurations evolve from one social order to another. Suggesting a multiple and overlapping international social orders' approach, the book uses three running cases of contested orders - Europe's contemporary social order, the cyberspace order, and the corporate order - to illustrate the theory. Based on the concepts of common humanity and epistemological security, the author also submits a normative theory of better practices and of bounded progress.

    Abstract: Becoming Activists in Global China is the first purely sociological study of the religious movement Falun Gong and its resistance to the Chinese state. The literature on Chinese protest has intensively studied the 1989 democracy movement while largely ignoring opposition by Falun Gong, even though the latter has been more enduring. This comparative study explains why the Falun Gong protest took off in diaspora and the democracy movement did not. Using multiple methods, Becoming Activists in Global China explains how Falun Gong's roots in proselytizing and its ethic of volunteerism provided the launch pad for its political mobilization. Simultaneously, diaspora democracy activists adopted practices that effectively discouraged grassroots participation. The study also shows how the policy goal of eliminating Falun Gong helped shape today's security-focused Chinese state. Explaining Falun Gong's two decades of protest illuminates a suppressed piece of Chinese contemporary history and advances our knowledge of how religious and political movements intersect.

    Abstract: Non-elected actors, such as non-governmental organizations and celebrity activists, present themselves as representatives of others to audiences of decision-makers, such as state leaders, the European Union, the United Nations, and the World Trade Organization. These actors are increasingly included in the deliberation and decision-making processes of such institutions. To take one well-known example, the non-governmental organization, Oxfam, presses decision-makers and governments for fair trade rules on behalf of the world's poor. What entitles such 'self-appointed representatives' to speak and act for the poor? As The Economist asked, 'Who elected Oxfam?'. Montanaro claims that such actors can, and should, be conceptualized as representatives, and that they can - though do not always - represent others in a manner that we can recognize as democratic. However, in order to do so, we must stretch our imaginations beyond the standard normative framework of elections

    Abstract: Rwanda and Bosnia both experienced mass violence in the early 1990s. Less than ten years later, Rwandans surprisingly elected the world's highest level of women to parliament. In Bosnia, women launched thousands of community organizations that became spaces for informal political participation. The political mobilization of women in both countries complicates the popular image of women as merely the victims and spoils of war. Through a close examination of these cases, Marie E. Berry unpacks the puzzling relationship between war and women's political mobilization. Drawing from over 260 interviews with women in both countries, she argues that war can reconfigure gendered power relations by precipitating demographic, economic, and cultural shifts. In the aftermath, however, many of the gains women made were set back. This book offers an entirely new view of women and war and includes concrete suggestions for policy makers, development organizations, and activists supporting women's rights

    Abstract: The Atlantic Slave Trade from West Central Africa, 1780–1867, traces the inland origins of slaves leaving West Central Africa at the peak period of the transatlantic slave trade. Drawing on archival sources from Angola, Brazil, England, and Portugal, Daniel B. Domingues da Silva explores not only the origins of the slaves forced into the trade but also the commodities for which they were exchanged and their methods of enslavement. Further, the book examines the evolution of the trade over time, its organization, the demographic profile of the population transported, the enslavers' motivations to participate in this activity, and the Africans' experience of enslavement and transportation across the Atlantic. Domingues da Silva also offers a detailed 'geography of enslavement', including information on the homelands of the enslaved Africans and their destination in the Americas

    Abstract: A persistent tradition existed in antiquity linking Caria with the island of Crete. This central theme of regional history is mirrored in the civic mythologies, cults and toponyms of southwestern Anatolia. This book explains why by approaching this diverse body of material with a broad chronological view, taking into account both the origins of this regional narrative and its endurance. It considers the mythologies in the light of archaeologically attested contacts during the Bronze Age, exploring whether such interaction could have left a residuum in later traditions. The continued relevance of this aspect of Carian history is then considered in the light of contacts during the Classical and Hellenistic periods, with analysis of how, and in which contexts, traditions survived. The Carians were an Anatolian people; however, their integration into the mythological framework of the Greek world reveals that interaction with the Aegean was a fundamental aspect of their history

    Abstract: In this innovative legal history of economic life in the Western Indian Ocean, Bishara examines the transformations of Islamic law and Islamicate commercial practices during the emergence of modern capitalism in the region. In this time of expanding commercial activity, a mélange of Arab, Indian, Swahili and Baloch merchants, planters, jurists, judges, soldiers and seamen forged the frontiers of a shared world. The interlinked worlds of trade and politics that these actors created, the shared commercial grammars and institutions that they developed and the spatial and socio-economic mobilities they engaged in endured until at least the middle of the twentieth century. This study examines the Indian Ocean from Oman to India and East Africa over an extended period of time, drawing together the histories of commerce, law and empire in a sophisticated, original and richly textured history of capitalism in the Islamic world

    Abstract: Based on the chance survival of a remarkable cache of documents, India and the Islamic Heartlands recaptures a vanished and forgotten world from the eighteenth century spanning much of today's Middle East and South Asia.     Abstract: Meaningful Resistance explores the origins and dynamics of resistance to markets through an examination of two social movements that emerged to voice and channel opposition to market reforms. Protests against water privatization in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and rising corn prices in Mexico City, Mexico, offer a lens to analyze the mechanisms by which perceived, market-driven threats to material livelihood can prompt resistance. By exploring connections among marketization, local practices, and political protest, the book shows how the material and the ideational are inextricably linked in resistance to subsistence threats. When people perceive that markets have put subsistence at risk, material and symbolic worlds are both at stake; citizens take to the streets not only to defend their pocketbooks, but also their conceptions of community. The book advances contemporary scholarship by showing how attention to grievances in general, and subsistence resources in particular, can add explanatory leverage to analyses of contentious politics

    Abstract: This book utilizes cuisine to understand the construction of the colonial middle class in Bengal who indigenized new culinary experiences as a result of colonial modernity. This process of indigenization developed certain social practices, including imagination of the act of cooking as a classic feminine act and the domestic kitchen as a sacred space. The process of indigenization was an aesthetic choice that was imbricated in the upper caste and patriarchal agenda of the middle-class social reform. However, in these acts of imagination, there were important elements of continuity from the pre-colonial times. The book establishes the fact that Bengali cuisine cannot be labeled as indigenist although it never became widely commercialized. The point was to cosmopolitanize the domestic and yet keep its tag of 'Bengaliness'. The resultant cuisine was hybrid, in many senses like its makers.

    Abstract: This book focuses on music, sound and space and how they have been employed to transform public and private experience.
    Abstract: Music, Sound and Space is the first collection to integrate research from musicology and sound studies on music and sound as they mediate everyday life. Music and sound exert an inescapable influence on the contemporary world, from the ubiquity of MP3 players to the controversial use of sound as an instrument of torture. In this book, leading scholars explore the spatialisation of music and sound, their capacity to engender modes of publicness and privacy, their constitution of subjectivity, and the politics of sound and space. Chapters discuss music and sound in relation to distinctive genres, technologies and settings, including sound installation art, popular music recordings, offices and hospitals, and music therapy. With international examples, from the Islamic soundscape of the Kenyan coast, to religious music in Europe, to First Nation musical sociability in Canada, this book offers a new global perspective on how music and sound and their spatialising capacities transform the nature of public and private experience.

    Abstract: A Historiography of the Modern Social Sciences includes essays on the ways in which the histories of psychology, anthropology, sociology, economics, history and political science have been written since the Second World War. Bringing together chapters written by the leading historians of each discipline, the book establishes significant parallels and contrasts and makes the case for a comparative interdisciplinary historiography. This comparative approach helps explain historiographical developments on the basis of factors specific to individual disciplines and the social, political, and intellectual developments that go beyond individual disciplines. All historians, including historians of the different social sciences, encounter literatures with which they are not familiar.     Abstract: Interest in Shi'a Islam has increased greatly in recent years, although Shi'ism in the Indian subcontinent has remained largely underexplored. Focusing on the influential Shi'a minority of Lucknow and the United Provinces, a region that was largely under Shi'a rule until 1856, this book traces the history of Indian Shi'ism through the colonial period toward independence in 1947. Drawing on a range of new sources, including religious writing, polemical literature and clerical biography, it assesses seminal developments including the growth of Shi'a religious activism, madrasa education, missionary activity, ritual innovation and the politicization of the Shi'a community. As a consequence of these significant religious and social transformations, a Shi'a sectarian identity developed that existed in separation from rather than in interaction with its Sunni counterparts. In this way the painful birth of modern sectarianism was initiated, the consequences of which are very much alive in South Asia today

    Abstract: "This comprehensive and authoritative statement of fundamental principles of sociological analysis integrates approaches that are often seen as mutually exclusive. John Scott argues that theorising in sociology and other social sciences is characterised by the application of eight key principles of sociological analysis: culture, nature, system, structure, action, space-time, mind and development. He considers the principal contributions to the study of each of these dimensions in their historical sequence in order to bring out the cumulative character of knowledge. Showing that the various principles can be combined in a single disciplinary framework, Scott argues that sociologists can work most productively within an intellectual division of labour that transcends artificial theoretical and disciplinary differences. Sociology provides the central ideas for conceptualising the social, but it must co-exist productively with other social science disciplines and disciplinary areas"--

    Abstract: This collection of essays examines the ways in which disputes and controversies about the application of scientific knowledge are resolved. Four concrete examples of public controversy are considered in detail: the efficacy of Laetrile, the classification of homosexuality as a disease, the setting of safety standards in the workplace, and the utility of nuclear energy as a source of power. The essays in this volume show that debates about these cases are not confined to matters of empirical fact. Rather, as is seen with most scientific and technical controversies, they focus on and are structured by complex ethical, economic, and political interests. Drs. Engelhardt and Caplan have brought together a distinguished group of scholars from the sciences and humanities, who sketch a theory of scientific controversy and attempt to provide recommendations about the ways in which both scientists and the public ought to seek more informed resolutions of highly contentious issues in science and technology.     Abstract: With the unrelenting unrest in places such as Iraq, Afghanistan and the Sudan, the plight of refugees has become an increasingly discussed topic in international relations. Why do we have refugees? When did the refugee 'problem' emerge? How can the refugee ever be reconciled with an international system that rests on sovereignty? Looking at three key periods - the inter-war period, the Cold War and the present day - Emma Haddad demonstrates how a specific image has defined the refugee since the international states system arose in its modern form and that refugees have thus been qualitatively the same over the course of history. This historical and normative approach suggests new ways to understand refugees and to formulate responses to them. By examining the issue from an international society perspective, this book highlights how refugees are an inevitable, if unanticipated, result of erecting political borders

Der vorliegende Band präsentiert erstmals die wichtigsten Texte Luhmanns zu einer Theorie der Moral. Luhmanns großes Projekt - eine Theorie der Gesellschaft - bestimmt auch seinen Blick auf die Moral, die er nicht, wie in der Philosophie üblich, substantiell betrachtet, sondern funktional. In einer individualisierten Gesellschaft stellt sich aus seiner Perspektive stets die Frage, wie Handlungskoordinationen auf der Ebene der Interaktionen möglich sind. Hier gewinnen moralische, aber auch rechtliche Regeln und Konventionen ihre Bedeutung. Um diese zu erfassen, bedarf es laut Luhmann einer Reflexionstheorie der Moral, deren Konturen in den hier versammelten Aufsätzen sichtbar werden.

Um einen Ausweg aus dieser Krise zu finden, sollte, so die provokative These dieses Buchs, diese Spannung bis zum äußersten ausgereizt werden.Bruno Latour, der die etablierten Grenzen zwischenWissenschaft, Kultur, Technik und Natur eingerissen hat, schlägt vor, zwei unterschiedliche Konzepte von Gesellschaft zu unterscheiden. Der einen Auffassung zufolge ist "Gesellschaft" eine unveränderliche abstrakte Entität, die ihren Schatten auf andere Bereiche wirft: auf die Wirtschaft, das Recht, die Wissenschaft etc. Nach der anderen hingegen ist "Gesellschaft" notwendig instabil: eine Verbindung überraschender Akteure, die die einlullende Gewißheit, einer gemeinsamen Welt anzugehören, in Frage stellen. Die Analyse dieser unerwarteten Verknüpfungen höchst unterschiedlicher Bereiche, wie etwa zwischen Viren, Wissenschaftlern, Leidenschaften, Naturkatastrophen oder Erfindungen, ist nach Bruno Latour Aufgabe der Soziologie.

    Abstract: Die nächste Gesellschaft ist die Computergesellschaft. Sie wird sich von der Buchdruckgesellschaft der Moderne so dramatisch unterscheiden wie diese von der Schriftgesellschaft der Antike. Hatte es die Antike mit einem Überschuß an Symbolen zu tun und die Moderne mit einem Überschuß an Kritik, so wird sich die nächste Gesellschaft durch einen Überschuß an Kontrolle auszeichnen. Auf die Struktur eines Überschusses an Sinn, so hat Niklas Luhmann spekuliert, muß eine Kultur mit der selektiven Handhabung dieses Überschusses antworten, wenn die Gesellschaft die Einführung eines neuen Kommunikationsmediums überleben können soll. Die in diesem Band versammelten Studien arbeiten diese These aus und zeigen, wie die Soziologie mit relativ einfachen Ideen vielfach vernetzte und scheinbar opake Phänomene anschaulich werden lassen kann.

Während sich in den frühen Stammesgesellschaften eine starke Bindung an den Nahraum beobachten läßt, führt die Moderne gerade über die alternativlos gegebenen Räume hinaus und eröffnet neue Horizonte. Die Klage über den Verlust der Gemeinschaft, des Lokalen und der Tradition findet hier ihren Ausgangspunkt. Die vorliegende Arbeit argumentiert, daß diese Bindung des Sozialen an die Nahverhältnisse einer systematischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Raum in der Soziologie lange im Weg stand. Im Durchgang durch zentrale soziologische Theoriepositionen und anhand einzelner Fallstudien werden nicht nur die Auswirkungen dieser Privilegierung der Nähe aufgezeigt, sondern wird auch der Gleichzeitigkeit von Deterritorialisierungs- und Reterritorialisierungsprozessen, von Öffnungen und Schließungen nachgegangen.

Ihre umfangreichen empirischen Studien belegen: Die einzelnen gehen höchst erfinderisch und (teilweise) spielerischer mit dem Zeithaushalt um, als bisher angenommen wurde. In zahlreichen ausführlichen Gesprächen mit Personen aus allen Gesellschaftsschichten und Altersgruppen hat sich gezeigt, daß die disziplinierende Dimension von Zeit - Termindruck, Routinetätigkeiten, kalendarische Unterteilungen, Zeitmangel und Alterung - von den einzelnen durch Gegenstrategien kompensiert wird. Barbara Adam beschreibt, welche Mittel und Wege die einzelnen finden und erfinden, um Zeit für soziale Interaktionen, Zeit für den Körper (für Krankheit wie Heilung), die Umwelt, Zeit für das Lernen, aber auch für Muße und Luxus zu gewinnen. Damit besitzt, so die These der Autorin, der Umgang des einzelnen mit der Zeit die typische Doppeldeutigkeit aller Dimensionen der Gesellschaft der Individuen: Jeder kann gegen den Zwang der Zeit auf eigene Weise vorgehen, er ist zugleich aber gezwungen, einen eigenen Zeithaushalt zu schaffen.
