    Abstract: How did Britons understand their relationship with the East in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries? James Watt's new study remaps the literary history of British Orientalisms between 1759, the 'year of victories' in the Seven Years' War, and 1835, when T. B. Macaulay published his polemical 'Minute on Indian Education'. It explores the impact of the war on Britons' cultural horizons, and the different and shifting ways in which Britons conceived of themselves and their nation as 'open' to the East across this period. Considering the emergence of new forms and styles of writing in the context of an age of empire and revolution, Watt examines how the familiar 'Eastern' fictions of the past were adapted, reworked, and reacted against. In doing so he illuminates the larger cultural conflict which animated a nation debating with itself about its place in the world and relation to its others

    Abstract: Der afroamerikanische Polizist Horace berichtet über Brutalität, Willkür und hemmungslosen Schusswaffengebrauch im Einsatz gegen schwarze Verdächtige in den USA. Die "Mordhauptstadt" New Orleans steht dabei ebenso im Focus wie Erfahrungen mit der ganz alltäglichen Drogen- und Gangkriminalität. Der Autor arbeitet seit Jahrzehnten auf Bundes- und Kommunalebene bei der US-Polizei in Führungs- und Spezialpositionen und wird z.B. von CNN als Sicherheitsexperte befragt. Er interviewte Polizisten aller Dienstgrade, Politiker, Gemeindevertreter und Überlebende von Polizeigewalt zum Thema "Rassismus". Seine ungezählten Erlebnisberichte darüber, dass Brutalität, Willkür und hemmungsloser Schusswaffengebrauch zur "Cop-Culture" gehören sind beängstigend. Auch sechs seiner Kollegen/-innen kommen zu Wort und beschreiben zahllose Fälle von "Racial Profiling", von gewalttätigen Beamten, die nicht verurteilt werden oder von Tötungen in Polizeigewahrsam. Ferguson als Schauplatz von Protesten der Bewegung BlackLifeMatters gegen Rassismus und Polizeigewalt steht ebenso im Focus wie korrupte Sicherheitsbehörden, die "Mordhauptstadt" New Orleans und die ganz alltägliche Drogen- und Gangkriminalität. Niedrigschwelliger Schreibstil gepaart mit sparsam eingesetztem statistischem Material, beeindruckend, breite Empfehlung. (2)

    Abstract: "The Power of Place Riots, strikes, and protests broke out in the streets of Shanghai and Bombay, renamed Mumbai in 1995, with impressive frequency during the twentieth century. Many of the landmark protests and social movements had close connections with the neighborhoods, workplaces, and civic space of each city. By the late twentieth century, as the political geography of each city changed rapidly with the commodification of urban land, so too did the patterns of political contention. Using a comparative historical lens, Frazier chronicles the political biographies of these two metropolises and leading centers of manufacturing and finance. Debates over ideology, citizenship, and political representation took material form through clashes over housing, jobs, police violence, public space, among much else in the lived experience of urban residents. Frazier puts contemporary debates over informal housing, eviction of inner-city residents, scarcities of manufacturing jobs, and questions of unequal citizenship in illuminating historical context"--

    Abstract: Statements of resolve - in which leaders indicate that their country is committed to a position and will not back down - are a fixture of international conflict. However, scholars have not agreed on how much these statements affect conflict outcomes or which conditions give them coercive credibility. Statements of Resolve argues that an important and underappreciated factor influencing the impact of resolved statements is the ability to follow through. Roseanne W. McManus explains how adversaries analyze a leader's ability to follow through on statements and shows that perceptions of the ability to follow through are influenced not only by military capabilities but also by less obvious domestic political conditions. Through rigorous statistical tests based on quantitative coding of US presidential statements and case studies of three Cold War conflicts, this book shows that resolved statements can effectively coerce adversaries, but only when a sufficient physical and political ability is present

Können diese nun auch noch auf die Möglichkeiten künstlicher Intelligenz und digitaler Überwachung zurückgreifen, ist der Mensch als autonomes Wesen in Gefahr. Um die Werte der Aufklärung in die Zukunft zu retten, legt Paul Mason eine radikale Verteidigung des Humanismus vor. Ausgehend von Karl Marx’ Frühschriften, entwirft er ein Bild vom Menschen, das ihn als ein selbstbestimmtes und zugleich gemeinschaftliches Wesen zeigt. Mason begleitet uns an die Orte vergangener und gegenwärtiger Kämpfe um Würde und Gerechtigkeit, von der Pariser Kommune über das von der Sparpolitik gebeutelte Griechenland bis hin zum Protest indigener Aktivisten auf der Inselgruppe Neukaledonien. Die Erben der Frauen und Männer auf den Barrikaden von damals, so Mason, sind die vernetzten Individuen von heute.

    Abstract: Noch vor wenigen Jahren richtete sich die westliche Öffentlichkeit in der scheinbaren Gewissheit des gesellschaftlichen Fortschritts ein: Der weltweite Siegeszug von Demokratie und Marktwirtschaft schien unaufhaltsam, Liberalisierung und Emanzipation, Wissensgesellschaft und Pluralisierung der Lebensstile schienen die Leitbegriffe der Zukunft. Spätestens mit dem Brexit und der Wahl Donald Trumps folgte die schmerzhafte Einsicht, dass es sich dabei um Illusionen gehandelt hatte. Tatsächlich wird erst jetzt das Ausmaß des Strukturwandels der Gesellschaft sichtbar: Die alte industrielle Moderne ist von einer Spätmoderne abgelöst worden, die von neuen Polarisierungen und Paradoxien geprägt ist - Fortschritt und Unbehagen liegen dicht beieinander. In einer Reihe von Essays arbeitet Andreas Reckwitz die zentralen Strukturmerkmale der Gegenwart pointiert heraus: die neue Klassengesellschaft, die Eigenschaften einer postindustriellen Ökonomie, den Konflikt um Kultur und Identität, die aus dem Imperativ der Selbstverwirklichung resultierende Erschöpfung und die Krise der Liberalismus. „Nach der wegweisenden Studie „Gesellschaft der Singularitäten“ beschäftigt sich Andreas Reckwitz in seiner Essaysammlung mit dem Strukturwandel der Gesellschaft.     Abstract: Ein frühgeschichtliches Lesebuch, das die Anfänge der Menschheit einmal "gegen den Strich" interpretiert und die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung und die Staatsentwicklung kritisch wertet. Eine stufenweise Entwicklung vom Jäger und Sammler zum Bauern und zu den Staaten fand so nicht statt. Rezension: Ein im Grunde anthropologisches Werk, das ein in den USA sehr bekannter Politologe aufgrund der Lektüre der relevanten Studien über die Frühgeschichte (von Historikern, von Archäologen, von Ethnologen u.a.) verfasst hat: Auf dieser Grundlage bürstet er die gängige Interpretation der Entwicklung der Zivilisation gegen den Strich, indem er die Sesshaftwerdung, die Landwirtschaft mit Haustieren und Nutzpflanzen und auch die Verstaatlichung nicht als eine folgerichtige Entwicklung interpretiert, wie es das gängige Narrativ stets wiederholt. Er zeigt, dass alles parallel bestand und rückt die nicht sesshaften Jäger und Sammler, die ebenfalls schon zielgerichtet (z.B. mit Feuer) gewirtschaftet haben, in den Vordergrund. Er legt alles in einer klaren, verständlichen Sprache dar und diskutiert die Möglichkeiten der Interpretation der Forschungsergebnisse. Die Fragwürdigkeit einer Interpretation von Gesellschaften, die kaum ein Zeugnis hinterlassen haben, bringt er vielfach zur Sprache. - Gut lesbar, mit umfangreichem Apparat (Literaturverzeichnis, Namens- und Stichwortregister).     Abstract: Scheppernde Sounds, lautes Benehmen und schrille Mode: Das Vokabular, mit dem Zeitgenossen Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine neue Jugendszene beschrieben, markiert einen Kulturbruch. Ästhetische Konflikte kulminierten in Straßenkrawallen, Polizeimaßnahmen und Zensurgesetzen. Zugleich etablierten Tourneen, Piratensender und Fanclubs grenzüberschreitend neue Inhalte. Bodo Mrozek analysiert einen Wandel, der sich in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren vollzog und die Gesellschaft prägte: Was zunächst als Jugenddelinquenz bekämpft wurde, galt zehn Jahre später als Inbegriff urbaner Kultur. Dokumente aus sechs Staaten bilden das Material dieser transnationalen Geschichte der Popkultur.

The Revolution Within answers this question through an in-depth study of unarmed resistance against Israeli rule in the Palestinian Territories over more than a decade. Despite having strong anti-regime sentiment, Palestinians initially lacked the internal organizational strength often seen as necessary for protest. This book provides a foundation for understanding participation and mobilization under these difficult conditions. It argues that, under these conditions, integration into state institutions - schools, prisons and courts - paradoxically makes individuals more likely to resist against the state. Diverse evidence drawn from field research - including the first, large-scale survey of participants and non-participants in Palestinian resistance, Arabic-language interviews, and archival sources - supports the argument. The book's findings explain how anti-regime resistance can occur even without the strong civil society organizations often regarded as necessary for protest and, thus, suggest new avenues for supporting civil resistance movements.

Many Muslims regard the pan-Islamic community, the umma, as the embodiment of the spiritual kinship of the faith, but it has also often been assumed to be inherently antagonistic to adherents of other faiths. Questions over relations with the Other are mirrored by debates over what constitutes the acceptable contours of Islamic doctrine itself. Indeed, the umma has had variant and contested meanings over time, and divergent perspectives on its inclusiveness or exclusiveness and whether it must have concrete or institutional form have become acute. The rise of jihadist movements has especially brought these related issues to the fore, with the targeting of external and internal 'enemies' presented as part of a purifying and defensive mission to rescue the umma from its current degradation. The anthem of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), 'My Umma, Dawn Has Appeared', extols Muslims to give up this life in order to revive the umma and assure victory for Islam. The idea of the umma, so central and yet so elusive, has taken on a talismanic quality

    Abstract: Political interest is the strongest predictor of 'good citizenship', yet hardly anything is known about it. For the first time in over three decades, here is a study explaining what political interest is, where it comes from, and why it matters. Providing the most thorough description available of political interest in four Western democracies this study analyzes large household panel data sets rarely used in political science to explain how interest develops in people's lives. In an accessible manner, the book's analytical approach pushes applied social scientists to consider how panel data can be used to better understand political behavior. It does so in a way that doesn't gloss over complexities, and explains them in straightforward language. Advanced statistical methods are presented informally, accompanied by graphical illustrations that require no prior knowledge to understand the methods used

    Abstract: Does religion influence political participation? This book takes up this pressing debate using Christianity in sub-Saharan Africa as its empirical base to demonstrate that religious teachings communicated in sermons can influence both the degree and the form of citizens' political participation. McClendon and Riedl document some of the current diversity of sermon content in contemporary Christian houses of worship and then use a combination of laboratory experiments, observational survey data, focus groups, and case comparisons in Zambia, Uganda, and Kenya to interrogate the impact of sermon exposure on political participation and the longevity of that impact. Pews to Politics in Africa leverages the pluralism of sermons in sub-Saharan Africa to gain insight into the content of cultural influences and their consequences for how ordinary citizens participate in politics.

    Abstract: This is a study of Vietnam's socialist transition and state transformation, generally known as đổi mới. It examines the drivers of socialist-regime change, the nature of the đổi mới state, and the basis of regime legitimacy in Vietnam. The Element argues that despite its 'one-party rule' label, the party-state apparatus that channels said rule has become fragmented. State-building during the đổi mới period involved negotiations and bargaining that redefine authority and power relations within the state apparatus. The party-state's accountability projects are designed to target the specific self-aggrandizing tendencies of the state apparatus, its policies, and abuse of state power. At the leadership level, patterns of resource allocation underlying the đổi mới growth model as well as the VCP's cadre rotation approach have accommodated central and sub-national state elites across sectors and levels, helping shore up the legitimacy of the đổi mới state in the eyes of the state elite. The combination of sustained economic growth, expansion of political space, accountability, and tolerance of small-scale public protests have been factors in strengthening regime-society legitimization.

    Abstract: Why do some individuals participate in risky, anti-regime resistance whereas others abstain? The Revolution Within answers this question through an in-depth study of unarmed resistance against Israeli rule in the Palestinian Territories over more than a decade. Despite having strong anti-regime sentiment, Palestinians initially lacked the internal organizational strength often seen as necessary for protest. This book provides a foundation for understanding participation and mobilization under these difficult conditions. It argues that, under these conditions, integration into state institutions - schools, prisons and courts - paradoxically makes individuals more likely to resist against the state. Diverse evidence drawn from field research - including the first, large-scale survey of participants and non-participants in Palestinian resistance, Arabic language interviews, and archival sources - supports the argument. The book's findings explain how anti-regime resistance can occur even without the strong civil society organizations often regarded as necessary for protest and, thus, suggest new avenues for supporting civil resistance movements.

    Abstract: Whilst past studies have examined when and how negotiations begin, and how wars end, this is the first full-length work to analyze the closing phase of negotiations. It identifies endgame as a definable phase in negotiation, with specific characteristics, as the parties involved sense that the end is in sight and decide whether or not they want to reach it. The authors further classify different types of negotiator behavior characteristic of this phase, drawing out various components, including mediation, conflict management vs resolution, turning points, uncertainty, home relations, amongst others. A number of specific cases are examined to illustrate this analysis, including Colombian negotiations with the FARC, Greece and the EU, Iran nuclear proliferation, French friendship treaties with Germany and Algeria, Chinese business negotiations, and trade negotiations in Asia. This pioneering work will appeal to scholars and advanced students of negotiation in international relations, international organisation, and business studies.

    Abstract: Focusing on the rising support for the populist right in Eastern Europe, this book examines how anger and resentment towards minorities is being utilized in politics. Bustikova details the process by which the acquisition of political power and demand for rights by ascendant minority groups precipitates a backlash of mobilization from the radical right. However, this book also argues that prejudice against minorities is not a sentiment exclusive to right-wing voters and is not the root cause of increasing support for the radical right. Rather, this study reveals variation in how minorities are accommodated by the government and explains the electoral successes and failures of radical right parties. By examining the capitalization on these feelings of discontent towards politically assertive minorities and with the governmental policies that yield to their demands, Bustikova exposes volatile, zeitgeist-dependent conditions under which once fringe right-wing parties have risen to prominent but precarious positions of power.

In the contemporary world, nearly all governance situations are polycentric, but people are not necessarily used to thinking this way. Governing Complexity provides an updated explanation of the concept of polycentric governance. The editors provide examples of it in contemporary settings involving complex natural resource systems, as well as a critical evaluation of the utility of the concept. With contributions from leading scholars in the field, this book makes the case that polycentric governance arrangements exist and it is possible for polycentric arrangements to perform well, persist for long periods, and adapt. Whether they actually function well, persist, or adapt depends on multiple factors that are reviewed and discussed, both theoretically and with examples from actual cases.

    Abstract: The Crisis behind the Euro-Crisis encourages dialogue among scholars across the social sciences in an attempt to challenge the narrative that regarded the Euro-crisis as an exceptional event. It is suggested instead that the Euro-crisis, along with the subsequent crises the EU has come to face, was merely symptomatic of deeper systemic cracks. This book's aim is to uncover that hidden systemic crisis - the 'crisis behind the Euro-crisis'. Under this reading it emerges that what needs to be questioned is not only the allegedly purely economic character of the Euro-crisis, but, more fundamentally, its very classification as an 'emergency'. Instead, the Euro-crisis needs to be regarded as expressive of a chronic, dysfunctional, but 'normal' condition of the EU. By following this line of analysis, this book illuminates not only the causes of contemporary turbulences in the European project, but perhaps the 'true' nature of the EU itself

    Abstract: Der Liberalismus ist in Verruf geraten. Oft wird er nur noch als Elitenattitüde wahrgenommen, als exklusive Kultur urbaner Globalisierungsgewinner. Wie konnte es so weit kommen? War der Liberalismus schon immer eine Sache arroganter, im Zweifelsfall heuchlerischer Moralisierer? Jan-Werner Müller zeigt, wie und warum sich solche Vorstellungen nach dem Ende des Kalten Krieges entgegen allen Erwartungen liberaler Triumphalisten durchsetzten. Vor allem aber formuliert er auf den Spuren der in Deutschland immer noch weitgehend unbekannten Denkerin Judith Shklar einen Liberalismus, der sich an der Vorstellung eines Lebens ohne Furcht und Abhängigkeiten orientiert.     Abstract: Based on the theoretical reconstruction of neglected post-WWI writings and political action of W. E. B. Du Bois, this volume offers a normative account of transnational cosmopolitanism. Pointing out the limitations of Kant's cosmopolitanism through a novel contextual account of Perpetual Peace, Transnational Cosmopolitanism shows how these limits remain in neo-Kantian scholarship. Inés Valdez's framework overcomes these limitations in a methodologically unique way, taking Du Bois's writings and his coalitional political action both as text that should inform our theorization and normative insights. The cosmopolitanism proposed in this work is an original contribution that questions the contemporary currency of Kant's canonical approach and enlists overlooked resources to radicalize, democratize, and transnationalize cosmopolitanism.

    Abstract: Riots, strikes, and protests broke out in the streets of Shanghai and Bombay (renamed Mumbai in 1995), with impressive frequency during the twentieth century. Many of the landmark protests and social movements had close connections with the neighborhoods, workplaces, and civic space of each city. By the late twentieth century, as the political geography of each city changed rapidly with the commodification of urban land, so too did the patterns of political contention. Using a comparative historical lens, Frazier chronicles the political biographies of these two metropolises and leading centers of manufacturing and finance. Debates over ideology, citizenship, and political representation took material form through clashes over housing, jobs, police violence, public space, among much else, in the lived experience of urban residents. Frazier puts contemporary debates over informal housing, eviction of inner-city residents, scarcities of manufacturing jobs, and questions of unequal citizenship in an illuminating historical context.

    Abstract: Drawing on evolutionary epistemology, process ontology, and a social-cognition approach, this book suggests cognitive evolution, an evolutionary-constructivist social and normative theory of change and stability of international social orders. It argues that practices and their background knowledge survive preferentially, communities of practice serve as their vehicle, and social orders evolve. As an evolutionary theory of world ordering, which does not borrow from the natural sciences, it explains why certain configurations of practices organize and govern social orders epistemically and normatively, and why and how these configurations evolve from one social order to another. Suggesting a multiple and overlapping international social orders' approach, the book uses three running cases of contested orders - Europe's contemporary social order, the cyberspace order, and the corporate order - to illustrate the theory. Based on the concepts of common humanity and epistemological security, the author also submits a normative theory of better practices and of bounded progress.

It identifies endgame as a definable phase in negotiation, with specific characteristics, as the parties involved sense that the end is in sight and decide whether or not they want to reach it. The authors further classify different types of negotiator behavior characteristic of this phase, drawing out various components, including mediation, conflict management vs resolution, turning points, uncertainty, home relations, amongst others. A number of specific cases are examined to illustrate this analysis, including Colombian negotiations with the FARC, Greece and the EU, Iran nuclear proliferation, French friendship treaties with Germany and Algeria, Chinese business negotiations, and trade negotiations in Asia. This pioneering work will appeal to scholars and advanced students of negotiation in international relations, international organisation, and business studies.

    Abstract: Christian Democratic actors and thinkers have been at the forefront of many of the twentieth century's key political battles - from the construction of the international human rights regime, through the process of European integration and the creation of postwar welfare regimes, to Latin American development policies during the Cold War. Yet their core ideas remain largely unknown, especially in the English-speaking world. Combining conceptual and historical approaches, Carlo Invernizzi Accetti traces the development of this ideology in the thought and writings of some of its key intellectual and political exponents, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. In so doing he sheds light on a number of important contemporary issues, from the question of the appropriate place of religion in presumptively 'secular' liberal-democratic regimes, to the normative resources available for building a political response to the recent rise of far-right populism.

    Abstract: Combining international political theory and EU studies, Richard Bellamy provides an original account of the democratic legitimacy of international organisations. He proposes a new interpretation of the EU's democratic failings and how they might be addressed. Drawing on the republican theory of freedom as non-domination, Bellamy proposes a way to combine national popular sovereignty with the pursuit of fair and equitable relations of non-domination among states and their citizens. Applying this approach to the EU, Bellamy shows that its democratic failings lie not with the democratic deficit at the EU level but with a democratic disconnect at the member state level. Rather than shifting democratic authority to the European Parliament, this book argues that the EU needs to reconnect with the different 'demoi' of the member states by empowering national parliaments in the EU policy-making process.

    Abstract: Many treatments of the twentieth-century Latin American left assume a movement populated mainly by affluent urban youth whose naïve dreams of revolution collapsed under the weight of their own elitism, racism, sexism, and sectarian dogmas. Many leftists struggled against capitalism and empire while also confronting racism, patriarchy, and authoritarianism. The left's ideology and practice were often shaped by leftists from marginalized populations, from Bolivian indigenous communities in the 1920s to the revolutionary women of El Salvador's guerrilla movements in the 1980s. Through ten historical case studies of ten different countries, Making the Revolution highlights some of the most important research on the Latin American left by leading senior and up-and-coming scholars, offering a needed corrective and valuable contribution to modern Latin American history, politics, and sociology

    Abstract: Authoritarian populist parties have advanced in many countries, and entered government in states as diverse as Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland. Even small parties can still shift the policy agenda, as demonstrated by UKIP's role in catalyzing Brexit. Drawing on new evidence, this book advances a general theory why the silent revolution in values triggered a backlash fuelling support for authoritarian-populist parties and leaders in the US and Europe. The conclusion highlights the dangers of this development and what could be done to mitigate the risks to liberal democracy.

However, emotions have been treated implicitly rather than theorized directly in much of organization theory, and in some literatures, have been ignored altogether. This Element focuses on emotions as intersubjective, collective and relational, and reviews structuralist, people-centered and strategic approaches to emotions in different research streams to provide one of the first broad examinations of emotions in organization theory. Charlene Zietsma, Maxim Voronov, Madeline Toubiana and Anna Roberts provide suggestions for future research within each literature and look across the literatures to identify theoretical and methodological considerations.

    Abstract: Borders sit at the center of global politics. Yet they are too often understood as thin lines, as they appear on maps, rather than as political institutions in their own right. This book takes a detailed look at the evolution of border security in the United States after 9/11. Far from the walls and fences that dominate the news, it reveals borders to be thick, multi-faceted and binational institutions that have evolved greatly in recent decades. The book contributes to debates within political science on sovereignty, citizenship, cosmopolitanism, human rights and global justice. In particular, the new politics of borders reveal a sovereignty that is not waning, but changing, expanding beyond the state carapace and engaging certain logics of empire
