Abstract: There have always been mail-order brides in America--but we haven't always thought about them in the same ways. In Buying a Bride, Marcia A. Zug starts with the so-called "Tobacco Wives" of the Jamestown colony and moves all the way forward to today's modern same-sex mail-order grooms to explore the advantages and disadvantages of mail-order marriage. It's a history of deception, physical abuse, and failed unions. It's also the story of how mail-order marriage can offer women surprising and empowering opportunities.Drawing on a forgotten trove of colorful mail-order marriage court cases, Zug explores the many troubling legal issues that arise in mail-order marriage: domestic abuse and murder, breach of contract, fraud (especially relating to immigration), and human trafficking and prostitution. She tells the story of how mail-order marriage lost the benign reputation it enjoyed in the Civil War era to become more and more reviled over time, and she argues compellingly that it does not entirely deserve its current reputation. While it is a common misperception that women turn to mail-order marriage as a desperate last resort, most mail-order brides are enticed rather than coerced. Since the first mail-order brides arrived on American shores in 1619, mail-order marriage has enabled women to improve both their marital prospects and their legal, political, and social freedoms. Buying A Bride uncovers this history and shows us how mail-order marriage empowers women and should be protected and even encouraged

Abstract: Scholars have long been divided over whether the Amazons of Greek legend actually existed. 'Postcolonial Amazons' offers a ground-breaking re-evaluation of the place of martial women in antiquity, bridging the gap between myth and reality by expanding our conception of the Amazon archetype to include the real female warriors of the ancient world.

Abstract: Packaged in handsome, affordable trade editions, Clydesdale Classics is a new series of essential literary works. It features literary phenomena with influence and themes so great that, after their publication, they changed literature forever. From the musings of literary geniuses like Mark Twain in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to the striking personal narrative of Harriet Jacobs in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, this new series is a comprehensive collection of our history through the words of the exceptional few. The original story for the 2013 Academy Award-winning film Twelve Years a Slave is the autobiographical account of Solomon Northup--an African American man born free in New York State who is tricked, kidnapped, taken to Washington, DC, and sold into slavery. After being drugged, bound, and denied his rights as a free man, Northup is sold and transported to slave owners in New Orleans. Here he experiences the true horrors of the slave trade--intense cruelty, beatings, sickness, negligence, barbarism, starvation. Throughout the book's melancholic prose, Northup recounts these horrific experiences in excruciating and agonizing detail. In one of the book's passages, he states: "My sufferings I can compare to nothing else than the burning agonies of hell!" For the next twelve years, Northup kept his identity hidden only to himself and remained imprisoned in this state of bondage. Originally published eight years before the Civil War and written in the same vein as the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, this groundbreaking work gave Americans from the north razor-sharp, firsthand insight into the tragedies that were occurring in the South. Still today, Northup's story is widely studied and reprinted, giving its readers a glimpse into a painful part of our country's past.

Abstract: "Most times left solely within the confine of plantation narratives, slavery was far from a land-based phenomenon. This book reveals for the first time how it took critical shape at sea. Expanding the gaze even more deeply, the book centers how the oceanic transport of human cargoes--infamously known as the Middle Passage--comprised a violently regulated process foundational to the institution of bondage. Sowande' Mustakeem's groundbreaking study goes inside the Atlantic slave trade to explore the social conditions and human costs embedded in the world of maritime slavery. Mining ship logs, records and personal documents, Mustakeem teases out the social histories produced between those on traveling ships: slaves, captains, sailors, and surgeons. As she shows, crewmen manufactured captives through enforced dependency, relentless cycles of physical, psychological terror, and pain that led to the making--and unmaking--of enslaved Africans held and transported onboard slave ships. Mustakeem relates how this process, and related power struggles, played out not just for adult men, but also for women, children, teens, infants, nursing mothers, the elderly, diseased, ailing, and dying. Mustakeem offers provocative new insights into how gender, health, age, illness, and medical treatment intersected with trauma and violence transformed human beings into the world's most commercially sought commodity for over four centuries."--Publisher's description

Abstract: Sexuality in the context of recovery is rarely talked about openly, in part because our broader culture may inhibit us from sharing our true experiences. For some, the prospect of sober sex feels like uncharted waters--in the past, we've rarely had sex without first numbing ourselves with drugs and alcohol. What does it mean to have an intimate relationship in sobriety? Exploring that question deepens our recovery journey. With this groundbreaking work, Jennifer Matesa uncovers the challenges real people encounter when they start taking their clothes off--without drinking or using in order to do so. Providing readers "a meeting between the covers," Matesa blends first-person accounts bravely shared by diverse members of the recovery community, insights from experts, and her own perspectives. The result is a book that creates a space for a vital, new dialogue about sexuality and intimacy. As we find a common language for this more hidden aspect of our healing, we can truly "practice these principles in all our affairs.".

Abstract: In twenty heavy chapters, this book chronicles Anselmi's experiences growing up as a straight edge, BMX-riding metal head in Rock Springs, Wyoming, a place with one of the highest per capita suicide rates in the United States. His grandpa was a well-known businessman and politician in the area, and was featured in a 1977 60 Minutes episode for his alleged connections to organized crime. This is only the beginning of Anselmi's heavy saga, and it interweaves all of the social and personal history one might expect from a story like thisincluding Black Sabbath, Pantera, and Metallica logo tattoos

Abstract: "This book introduces and explores Asian communities in the U.S., the Caribbean, and Latin America through literary, historical, and theoretical frameworks by bringing together the multiple cultural perspectives of an emerging field of study: the transnational field of Asians in the Americas. The new scholarship of these authors addresses familial, historical, and literary ties to Asia, while also introducing the contributions of Asians in the Americas in an interdisciplinary framework, easily accessible to students and scholars and amendable for course adoption. The subjects of these essays emphasize community by discussing identity, religion, culture, public health, business, language, film, and literature. They imagine the homeland and the possibilities that life in the country of residence holds. This volume seeks to understand the historically collapsed notion of Asians in the Americas, wherein Asian identity has been strategically invoked within rigid confines for political and ideological perspectives. Through a comparative framework, Imagining Asia in the Americas moves past research models that consider the immigrant as a static subject that cuts his ties with the homeland and immerses himself in a new identity specifically linked to the host country. Instead, they introduce new approaches to examine the intersections of the past and present in community formation as it is linked to the homeland as well as the resident country"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: This book is the product of the 2ndWorld Conference on Environmental History, held in Guimarães, Portugal, in 2014. It gathers works by authors from the five continents, addressing concerns raised by past events so as to provide information to help manage the present and the future. It reveals howour cultural background and examples of past territorial intervention can help to combat political and cultural limitations through the common language of environmental benefits without disguising harmful past human interventions.Considering that political ideologiessuch as socialism and capitalism, as well as religion, fail to offer global paradigms for common ground, an environmentally positive discourse instead of an ecological determinism might serve as an umbrella common language to overcome blocking factors, real or invented, and avoid repeating ecological loss. Therefore, agency, environmental speech and historical research are urgently needed in order to sustain environmental paradigms and overcome political, cultural an economic interests in the public arena. This book intertwines reflections on our bonds with landscapes, processes of natural and scientific transfer across the globe, the changing of ecosystems, the way in which scientific knowledge has historically both accelerated destruction and allowed a better distribution of vital resources or as it, in today's world, can offer alternatives that avoid harmingthose same vital natural resources: water, soil and air. In addition, it shows the relevance of culturalfactors both in the taming of nature in favor of human comfort and in the role of the environment matters in the forging of cultural identities, which cannotbe detached from technical intervention in the world. In short, the book firstly studies the past, approaching it as a data set of how the environment has shaped culture, secondly seeks to understand the present, and thirdly assesses future perspectives: whatto keep, what to change, and what to dream anew, considering that conventional solutions have not sufficed to protect life on our planet.

Abstract: This volume recasts the concepts of vulnerability and resistance, moving beyond the assumptions that they are opposites. Focusing on recent events and cultural practices in Turkey, Palestine, France, and the former Yugoslavia, the essays connect vulnerability to resistance by showing how women and other minorities use their own vulnerability as resistance.

    DDC: 305.23508996
    Keywords: Electronic books
Abstract: Like all teens, African American teens find themselves wondering what they should or should not be doing and how they should behave toward each other -- only they often have no male role model in the home and negative models, like gang-banger, on the street. As they struggle to build their characters, they receive feedback from multiple sources, causing confusion. TRAINING BLACK SPIRIT offers a guide through the fog of adolescence by providing a personal training aid in ethics -- values -- especially tailored for Black teens. TRAINING BLACK SPIRIT holds that our spirits, which protect and sustain us, direct and unify our thoughts, efforts, and actions. Author Dr. William L. Conwill helps Black teens prepare for adulthood in the family, the community, and the world by developing their characters. TRAINING BLACK SPIRIT builds upon African American cultural heritage, which is all too often absent from Black teens' experience. The principles presented in TRAINING BLACK SPIRIT provide directives or instructions on living, as well as a defense against destructive influences. like drugs and violence. These principles are represented throughout the text by Adinkra symbols, along with a martial-arts self-defense interpretation for each principle, which teens discuss with an adult facilitator.. Drawing on brain science, transpersonal psychology, and mainstream psychiatry, as well as ancient traditions, TRAINING BLACK SPIRIT guides Black teens in conducting a personal and conscious examination of the traditional principles that enable us to survive, create, and nurture life. Keeping teens from heading down the wrong road is am increasing challenge. TRAINING BLACK SPIRIT is a guide for young, black teensto explore their personal values or ethics through the use of symbols and values from West African culture to help build character. TRAINING BLACK SPIRIT
Abstract: prepares teens for obstacles they will met with in life, providing values and behaviors for coping with challenging life experiences. As a psychologist Dr. Conwill has worked extensively with teens in various settings, helping them their challenges, providing ethical principles to guide them through

Abstract: In Caribbean history, the European colonial plantocracy created a cultural diaspora in which African slaves were torn from their ancestral homeland. In order to maintain vital links to their traditions and culture, slaves retained certain customs and nurtured them in the Caribbean. The creation of lace-bark cloth from the lagetta tree was a practice that enabled slave women to fashion their own clothing, an exercise that was both a necessity, as clothing provisions for slaves were poor, and empowering, as it allowed women who participated in the industry to achieve some financial independence. This is the first book on the subject and, through close collaboration with experts in the field including Maroon descendants, scientists and conservationists, it offers a pioneering perspective on the material culture of Caribbean slaves, bringing into focus the dynamics of race, class and gender. Focussing on the time period from the 1660s to the 1920s, it examines how the industry developed, the types of clothes made, and the people who wore them. The study asks crucial questions about the social roles that bark cloth production played in the plantation economy and colonial society, and in particular explores the relationship between bark cloth production and identity amongst slave women
