Abstract: This edited volume investigates the Czech response to the European migration crisis of 2015. Focusing on the discourses and practices the book analyses the foreign policy ideas which were guiding the Czech foreign policy in the period from 2014 to 2019. The chapters offer a variety of methodologies (discourse analysis, content analysis, and case study) and perspectives (decision-makers, NGOs, emotions, foreign policy practice, and European partners). All the chapters rely on a common conceptual framework that operationalises foreign policy ideas as ideologies (Atlanticism, Europeanism, Internationalism, and Sovereignism) and roles (Democracy Supporter, Protectee, Faithful Ally, Regional Collaborator, Reformer, and Prosperity Builder). The main benefit of the book consists in using a unique conceptual framework to produce new empirical insights into the Czech foreign policy making. The book will be of particular interest to the students of the Czech politics and it can be also used as a case study in foreign policy-making. It also offers a nuanced perspective on the Central and Eastern Europe decision-making during the EU migration crisis which goes beyond the usual ideological classifications of those countries in the West European public discourse. Petr Drulák is a Professor at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the Faculty of Arts of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, a senior researcher at the Institute of International Relations in Prague, and a guest professor at the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA). He served as Ambassador of the Czech Republic to France and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. He published extensively on Central Europe, national interest, and theory of international relations (e.g., in European Journal of International Relations, Journal of European Public Policy,Geopolitics, Journal of International Relations and Development, and Osteuropa).

Abstract: “Across thirty three dazzling chapters, this groundbreaking collection from some of the world’s leading migration scholars makes a major contribution to the field of migration studies. Centring south-south migration raises vital theoretical, methodological, and empirical questions for research on mobility globally which go far beyond geographical movements within the symbolic geography of the ‘Global South’. Situated at the cutting edge of these debates, the contributors to this volume offer food for thought for scholars and students from a range of disciplines and locations.” --Lucy Mayblin, Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociological Studies University of Sheffield. Author of Asylum After Empire: Postcolonial Legacies in the Politics of Asylum Seeking (2017) and Migration Studies and Colonialism (with Joe Turner, 2020) This open access handbook examines the phenomenon of South-South migration and its relationship to inequality in the Global South, where at least a third of all international migration takes place. Drawing on contributions from nearly 70 leading migration scholars, mainly from the Global South, the handbook challenges dominant conceptualisations of migration, offering new perspectives and insights that can inform theoretical and policy understandings and unlock migration’s development potential. The handbook is divided into four parts, each highlighting often overlooked mobility patterns within and between regions of the Global South, as well as the inequalities faced by those who move. Key cross-cutting themes include gender, race, poverty and income inequality, migration decision making, intermediaries, remittances, technology, climate change, food security and migration governance. The handbook is an indispensable resource on South-South migration and inequality for academics, researchers, postgraduates and development practitioners. Abstract: This open access book explores the intersection of property law, relocation, and resettlement processes in the United States and among communities that grapple with migration as an adaptation strategy. As communities face the prospect of relocating because of rising seas, policy makers, disaster specialists, and community leaders are scrambling to understand what adaptation pathways are legally possible. While in its ideal application, law functions blindly and without variation, the authors find that legal contradictions come to bear on resettlement processes and place certain communities further in harm’s way. This book will unearth these contradictions in order to understand why successful community-based resettlement has presented such a challenge to communities that are experiencing increasing land deterioration as a result of climate change. Abstract: This edited volume offers innovative perspectives on the study of music as cultural diplomacy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), a region often overlooked in such discussions. It offers an innovative contribution to the field of ethnomusicology, as well as political science and international relations, by highlighting the agency of non-state actors (local voices, communities, and grassroots organizations), thereby contributing towards de-centering the state, hitherto conceived as the chief player in cultural diplomacy. This volume is divided into four main parts organized along the following themes: 1. History and Historiography, 2. Migration, Diaspora, and Ethics, 3. Statecraft and Music Making, and 4. Affective and Sensorial Diplomacy. The perspectives offered in this volume offer a deeper exploration of bottom-up initiatives of cultural diplomacy through music, instead of the more usual analyses of top-down, state-directed programmes. Overall, the aim is to reconceptualize Middle Eastern, North African and Arab Gulf musical practices in their relationship to power and cultural diplomacy in order build a broader and pluri-dimensional account of these contentious relationships. Abstract: Drawing on empirical research with older South Asian migrant women, this book puts forth new understandings on how older, settled, migrant women construct and understand age through recollections of key life course events that are structured around gendered positions. Divesting from a Western-centric view and presenting a decolonial and Black feminist lens to ageing, the author presents intersectionality and transnational positionality as useful tools to connect old age, migration and memory in critical studies on aging. Chapters flesh out life course memories at different key stages and examines how the intersections of multiple markers of identity (race, gender, language, immigration status, age, etc.) shape how older South Asian migrant women understand and experience their lives. This book will be of interest to scholars with a focus on Gender Studies, Migration Studies, Ageing Studies, and Mobility Studies.

Abstract: Over a million Kurdish-Yezidi refugees are dispersed across European cities and towns. However, they are neither recognized as a distinct community of stateless immigrants nor as a distinct European ethnic or religious minority. They are frequently utilized as data sources without having a voice to address their challenges. This oral testimony project, moving beyond, but contributing to, conventional academic research, provides these communities with a space to tackle multiple questions in their own languages and with their own voices. The book seeks to answer what drives their departures from their home countries, how they escape, what shapes their lives in receiving cities, and finally, how homeland affairs influence their lives in new environments. By addressing all these themes, this book presents refugee-centric knowledge by and with refugees as objects and subjects of their narratives and transcends neoliberal humanitarian, state-centric, and colonial hegemonic epistemes that limit refugees' epistemic capabilities and viewpoints. Veysi Dag is a research fellow of the Minerva Foundation at the Department of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also a research associate at SOAS, University of London. His research interests focus on studies of migration and diaspora, governance, social movements and transnationalism, comparative politics with a focus on refugee and migration policies in Europe, peacebuilding and conflict transformation, and regional policy analysis with a focus on Middle Eastern politics and the Kurdish-Turkish conflict.

Abstract: This edited book focuses on the intersection of return migration and crises in non-Western countries. The book explores a wide range of theoretical and methodological perspectives while offering practical insights to address the intricate issues surrounding return migration and crises. The topics covered within this volume include return migration trends, the pivotal roles and contributions of return migrants, the social, psychological, and policy challenges faced by returnees, emerging issues stemming from return migration in their home countries, and the public and formal responses to return migration and the reintegration of returnees, and the roles of crises in these areas. This edited volume brings together diverse perspectives of academic researchers, practitioners, and policymakers on return migration. The book features cases of multiple non-Western countries in Asia (Philippines, China, India), Europe (Lithuania, Turkey, & Ukraine), the Middle East and North Africa (Morocco), and South America and the Caribbean (Mexico, Peru & Dominican Republic). Findings provide a unique opportunity to critically explore current thinking on return migration and investigate the relationship between migration and crisis from varying policy and operational viewpoints. This book, hence, attends to practitioners to develop creative solutions to both global and local policies and practices of return migration management in emerging market countries, which will support and accommodate both their returnees and residents amid challenging times. Jungwon Yeo is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Administration at the University of Central Florida. Her primary research focuses on enhancing attitudes, behaviors, and cognitions of diverse individuals and organizations and their collective decision-making process in critical policy contexts, such as disaster and crisis management, migration, and human security. Additionally, her research explores key topics shaping contemporary discourse in public administration, including accountability, ethics, leadership, and social justice, and their consequential impact on public service provision. Her research experience is demonstrated through refereed publications, national and international conference presentations, and multi-year interdisciplinary research grant awards.

Abstract: This book provides a focused and comprehensive understanding of the conflict surrounding the Rohingya displacement, using a unique peace and conflict transformation viewpoint. Divided into four sections and nineteen chapters, it covers significant themes related to the conflict. It provides an in-depth examination of its security implications, media impact, and the need for a long-term transformation strategy. The authors offer a sharp perspective on the crisis, covering a wide range of topics, including human rights abuses, geopolitics, media influence, and repatriation of the Rohingya. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of the conflict, providing readers with a thorough understanding of the Rohingya displacement-related conflict. The authors advocate for a peaceful end to the conflict through repatriation, offering valuable conflict transformation tools for decision-makers in Bangladesh and around the world. This book is essential for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the conflict's security implications and highlights original research from academics on the role of the media. It is relevant for scholars, politicians, decision-makers in the security and refugee management fields, academics studying the media, and humanitarian actors.

Abstract: This open access book brings together different perspectives on migration and the city that are usually discussed separately, to show the special character of the urban context as a territorial and political space where people coexist, whether by choice or necessity. Drawing on heterogeneous situations in cities in different world regions (including Europe, North America, the Middle East, South, Southeast and East Asia and the Asia Pacific) contributions to this volume examine how migration and the urban context interact in the twenty-first century. The book is structured in four parts. The first looks at cities as hubs of cultural creativity, exploring the many dimensions of cultural diversity and identity as they are negotiated in the urban context. The second focuses on what lies outside the large urban centres of today, notably suburbs, while the third part engages with migration and diversity in small and mid-sized cities, many of which have adopted strategies to welcome growing numbers of migrants. Last but not least, the fourth part looks at the challenges and opportunities that asylum-seeking and irregular migration flows bring to cities. By providing a variety of empirical cases based on various world regions, this book is a valuable resource for researchers, students and policy makers.

Abstract: This book examines the efforts of the government in Scotland to manage the increase of migrants travelling to Britain at the end of the nineteenth century. Focussing on the period between 1885 and 1914, the book explores how the Scottish machinery of government handled the administration of ‘foreigners.’ The author uses a comparative, thematic approach to analyse migrant experiences, identities, and relationships with state institutions. Drawing from state records held by the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh, the book argues that Scottish officials in semi-autonomous boards began to recognise, describe and enumerate the presence of the ‘foreigner’ in the early twentieth century, framing their handling of foreignness in accordance with the Aliens Act of 1905. The author goes on to explain that institutions operating in Scotland developed a distinctly Scottish approach to alien matters, which continued up until the Second Word War. Therefore, an increasing number of important decisions affecting migrants were taken by a distinctly Scottish machinery of government, impacting on how Scottish officials understood foreignness, and how those identified as foreigners understood their identity in relation to Scottishness. Contributing significantly to current heated debates on migration and identity amongst researchers and the general public in Europe and beyond, this book provides essential insights into the ways in which a ‘sub-state’ began to develop practices, processes and attitudes towards migration which were not always in line with that of the central government. Terence McBride is an Honorary Associate in History at the Open University in Scotland. He has published widely on the migrant experience in Scotland, including articles in Immigrants and Minorities and Historical Research.

Abstract: The book deconstructs the interplay between governance, migration, international relations, and security as a complex and constantly evolving dynamic that has significant implications for individuals, societies, and nations around the world. This book shows that the connections between governance, migration, international relations, and security have become increasingly significant for several reasons. First, it unpacks how globalization has led to an unprecedented level of interconnectedness between nations, resulting in a need for increased understanding of how governance frameworks, migration patterns, and international relations impact security both within and between nations. Second, it shows that the movement of people across borders has become a significant challenge, with more people on the move now than at any time in human history. Third, it highlights the increasingly complex and interdependent nature of international relations, which requires a nuanced understanding of how different actors, including governments, international organizations, and non-state actors, interact and influence each other. Fourth, the book addresses how security concerns have become increasingly pressing in today's world, with the rise of non-state actors, such as terrorist groups, as well as the proliferation of cyber threats. The book positions that an understanding of these dynamics, and their implications, is critical for both academics and policymakers, to build effective international partnerships and respond to global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and economic crises. It is relevant to researchers across the social sciences, including development studies, international relations, global politics, migration, public health, and environmental policy.

Abstract: 1. Introduction: Transnational Cross-Cultural Marriage in Australia’s Multicultural Society -- 2. Histories of Spousal Migration -- 3. ‘An Ocean of Fishes’: Negotiating Love Online -- 4. Creating Intercultural Families.
Abstract: " Marriage Migration, Intercultural Families and Global Intimacies connects moral panics over the centuries. From settlement, Australian society has stereotyped women who move to marry, or marry as they move. Here, Robinson’s weaves together a deft review of the literature with vignettes from interviewees in cross-cultural marriages. Traversing the centuries, and technologies, her analysis reveals why the circumstance of a couples’ courtship is an unreliable indicator of a companionate marriage." —Deirdre McKay, Professor of Sustainable Development, Keele University, UK This book brings an innovative study of marriage migration in Australia, offering new insights into issues of intimacy and authenticity online. In doing so, it delivers on five main objectives: exploring emotional attachment and personal life in global spaces; interrogating stereotypes and their pervasive influence on personal relations; analysing attitudes and social practice within the institution of marriage; investigating immigration policy, marriage, and citizens’ rights; theorizing gender and class relations in the current global order. The analysis moves between ‘online’ and ‘offline’ social relations and processes, with comparative data enabling a critical framing of the data on marriage relationships developed online. This important contribution places contemporary forms of transcultural marriage and marriage brokering in a historical context of ‘marriage’ in the ‘Anglosphere’ tradition, and in particular historical forms of marriage migration in settler colonial and now multicultural Australia—including histories of colonial era ‘bride ships’ and post WW2 ‘proxy brides’ from southern Europe. Abstract: How do international students and alumni contribute to development in their countries of origin? Is the development effect larger when students return to their countries of origin directly after completing their studies and become involved locally there, or can they also support the development of their country of origin if they remain abroad after their studies and contribute their knowledge and capital to the development process of their country of origin via transnational networks? This question is examined in the case of the German scholarship program of the Catholic Academic Foreigner Service (KAAD) in five countries of different developing regions: Georgia, Ghana, Indonesia, Colombia and Palestinian territories. The authors Dr. Sascha Krannich is a research associate at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen with a focus on migration, human rights and global health. Abstract: This book explores key issues on the relational and operational dimension of the professional actions aimed at ensuring the well-being and inclusion of migrants in the reception system. Starting from the assumption that well-being is a multi-level phenomenon related to different and complex questions, the chapter authors articulated their reflections developing some thematic contents, complementary to one another, from the perspectives of different social actors involved in the inclusion process. A special attention is paid to the risk factors as potential obstacles to the inclusion, not only in the achievement of well-being but also in the relationship with the receiving society and with the reception system. Case studies will be presented to show how this complexity is explored integrating different theoretical perspectives with the participation of all social actors involved in inclusion pathways (unaccompanied migrant minors, immigrant families, refugees, social operators, voluntary guardians). The authors share the social responsibility in investing in human and professional resources in the reception system and in connecting it with the local community. Updating the social workers’ tools and methods become more and more relevant to enable the diffusion of new skills, functions, and roles in the management of reception of migrant minors and adults.

Abstract: Chapter 1: Introduction -- Chapter 2: The State and transnationalism -- Chapter 3: The Transnational Emigration State -- Chapter 4: The Transnational Immigration State and the totalitarian temptation -- Chapter 5: The revolt of ecotones.
Abstract: This work in two parts examines the relations between transnational societies and states. The second volume of this work contends that current policies meant to control or enhance transnational flows have led to the emergence of a transnational policy apparatus coined the transnational state. This book proposes an innovative conceptual framework to grasp the transformations of the contemporary state in both sending and receiving countries. It shows how states expand beyond national territorial limits by reaching out to migrants where they are. In response to the migrants’ endeavours to circumvent the constrains imposed by selective migration policies, public authorities expand the reach of their control beyond (externalisation), within (internalisation) and at (expansion) borders. A totalitarian temptation seems to have seized contemporary state bureaucracies, affecting the very nature of borders and societies. The core argument of this research is that the development of the transnational state is not random. It is a process shaping and shaped by the structures of the transnational society. Abstract: In recounting their migration journey, references to nationality pervade the narratives of Zimbabweans in South Africa. Given the challenges many migrants confront based on their nationality, this presents a seeming paradox. This qualitative interview study, conducted with Zimbabwean migrants in two areas of Cape Town—Observatory and Dunoon—aims to elucidate the nuances of national self-descriptions in a demanding environment. Identifying as Zimbabwean serves as a sanctuary and a retreat, where alternative identifications often prove transient; embracing Zimbabweanness fosters an affirmative and positive self-perception, surpassing the limitations of other collective self-descriptions. Rather than pre-emptively characterizing a nationalist demeanour, the articulation of national self-description emerges as a strategic tool to navigate experiences of hostility and discrimination, while also asserting legitimate claims to equal opportunities. In this way, nationality takes a trajectory that diverges from conventional notions of nationality (and the ones of the nation-state or citizenship) as per Northern theory, contributing to alternative conceptualizations within the framework of the Global South. About the author Johannes Kögel studied philosophy and sociology in Munich and Cape Town. He currently works as a research associate at the University of Munich (LMU München). Abstract: This open access book is an exploration of city responses to migrants with a precarious status in Europe. It provides new evidence and analysis from research on three cities in Austria, Germany and the UK: Vienna, Frankfurt and Cardiff. The book explores strategies and services of municipal authorities towards precarious migrants and their cooperation with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in service provision. It focuses on healthcare, education, housing and access to advice; and particular attention is given to the situation of women. The book develops the concept of precarity in relation to migration status, and of horizontal governance arrangements within municipal authorities. It explores the tension between exclusion and inclusion of migrants who have limited rights of access to welfare services, and contributes evidence on the factors shaping municipal policy making, as well as on the framing of rationales for providing access to essential services.

Abstract: “This is a most worthy and timely contribution which will clearly have an impact on regional studies of the Balkans, the new Eastern Europe, and post communism.” — Martyn Rady, Masaryk Professor Emeritus of Central European History, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London, UK This book provides a broad, interdisciplinary analysis of events impacting on North Macedonia since its independence, particularly during the last decade. In the past thirty years, the country has gone through deep political, social and economic transition, along with a name change from ‘Macedonia’ to the ‘Republic of North Macedonia’ following the Prespa Agreement signed with Greece. The contributors consider Macedonia’s challenges, its multi-ethnic make-up and its ambition to enter the European mainstream through the auspices of the European Union and NATO. The volume includes chapters on international politics and North Macedonia’s place in the region’s security architecture as well as the difficulties of the privatisation of socially owned enterprises, political corruption, state capture and backsliding. The book also covers the controversial ‘Skopje 2014’ project in addition to the impact of migration along the ‘Balkan Route’ and the current wranglings with Bulgaria over identity politics. Robert Hudson is Emeritus Professor in European History and Cultural Politics at the University of Derby, UK, Professor honoris causa at University American College Skopje, North Macedonia and the former Director of the Identity, Conflict, and Representation Research Centre. Ivan Dodovski is Professor in Critical Theory and Dean of the School of Political Science at University American College Skopje, North Macedonia.

Abstract: “Moving beyond a market-centric paradigm of social in/exclusion, this book critically interrogates the push/pull socio-political factors by which marginalised groups are simultaneously included and excluded across the EU. This sensitive and thought-provoking account highlights the progress being made, the obstacles that remain, and the need for all EU students to rethink conceptualisations and understandings of equality.” –Paul Copeland, School of Politics and International Relations, Queen Mary University of London, UK This volume provides an updated analysis of the most significant constitutive aspects for the political sociology of the EU. It examines in detail how civic and political activism regarding the inclusion and integration of gender and sexual minorities, as well as migrants and refugees, have become substantial forces in Europe today. It exhibits a political sociology perspective that moves away from the predominant state-centrism and institutional focus in mainstream analyses of European politics. It brings to the fore the role of citizens, civil society and identity politics as well as transnational societal phenomena impacting on the ambivalent civic in/exclusion tendencies prevalent in the EU. The book highlights the linkage of EU institutions and policies to established and new societal actors in response to recent challenges of the EU.

Abstract: This book offers a detailed narrative of Dalit migrants' everyday experience in urban areas with regard to the availability and accessibility of welfare services and state institutions. It discusses caste, specifically the identity of integration for Dalit migrants and the social work profession to integrate a marginalized community. Further, the book also highlights social, political, cultural, and economic changes among Dalit migrants in cities. The book traces the trajectory of Dalit migrants and captures their mobility from rural to urban areas, which is a complex economic and social phenomenon. In consideration of this complexity, the author explores the process of migration in its finer details through a focus on lived experiences of Dalit migrants in cities. Dalits often migrate to cities in search of better employment and livelihood opportunities because their occupations are invariably associated with their caste in villages. This book investigates the role of caste-based identity in Dalit migrants’ emancipation and integration in cities. In addition, the book examines the role of caste in the exclusion of Dalit migrants in cities and explains the dynamic nature of the 'state' and Dalit migrants' assertion. Among the topics covered in the book's seven chapters: Mumbai/Bombay: Migration, Caste, and Dalits Caste and Migration: The City—A Site for ‘Inclusion’ and Emancipation Entitlement, Deprivation, and Basic Services: Everyday Experience of Dalit Migrants with the State Dalit Migrants: Assertion, Emancipation, and Social Change is intended for students, academicians, and researchers in social work, migration studies, labour studies, development studies, population science, and economics. Developmental professionals also will be keen to read the book.

Abstract: This book explores how questions about home and belonging have been framed in the discourses on race, migration, and social relationships. It does this with the aim of envisioning alternative modes of living and reimagining our political communities in ways that question the legacy of colonization and constructed identities which detract from our sense of obligation to each other and the planet. The book questions problematic categories of difference to transform human relations beyond the materialism of our global political economy. Questions addressed in the volume include: In what ways are combative colonial identities of difference manufactured within our national and global spaces of encounter? How can we expel the racialized and tribalized political identities that seek to purify and deny the complexities and sacredness of being human? How do we embrace the notion that everyone we encounter is a mirror reflecting our fears of suffering and our desires for happiness? The book is set in the context of re-emerging ultra-nationalists and anti-migrant politicians on the national and international stage, advancing various strands of extreme-right and protectionist ideology couched as redemptive-welfarist strategies. The adverse impacts of these strategies seem to be reifying a possessive idea of citizenship and identity, engendering a national fantasy that portrays communities as homogenous entities inhabiting enclosed borders. This is essentially a compendium of conversations across the intersection of the racial, national, ethnic, spiritual, and sexual boundaries in which we live. Benjamin Maiangwa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Prior to joining Lakehead University, he was Teaching Fellow in International Relations and Peace and Conflict Studies in the School of Government and International Affairs (SGIA), Durham University, UK. He was also instructor at the University of Manitoba and the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT). Maiangwa's research focuses broadly on the intersection of politics, culture, and society. His publications and outreach activities use storytelling, action research, and critical ethnography to explore notions of contested belonging, home, mobility, and people's experiences of conflict and peace. .

Abstract: In the literature on forced migration, little is known about the experiences of Iraqi refugees resettled in the United States through the US Refugee Admissions, Reception and Placement Program. As part of its longstanding refugee resettlement policy, the United States has accepted and provided safe haven to thousands of refugees. Focusing primarily on the situation of Iraqis resettled in Arizona since the 1990s, this research uses interview findings and first-hand data to examine various aspects of their post-resettlement experiences through a meta-theoretical approach that includes aspects of humanitarian governance, adaptation, acculturation and integration. Building on this theoretical understanding, this book examines the process from the first moment of resettlement to integration as a multi-layered social reality and reveals the fundamental impact of forced migration on the 'politics of refugee life'. By examining the US resettlement program in relation to the role and functions of resettlement agencies and non-profit organizations in collaboration with the government, this book highlights the fundamental difference between refugee integration and migrant integration, introduces new concepts of integration, discusses the US refugee admissions, reception and placement program and refugee integration in relation to the organization of humanitarian governance globally, and offers recommendations for improving resettlement and integration processes. Abstract: This book discusses the displacement of urban populations, inequality, and poverty in three cities in South Asia—Colombo, Jaffna in Sri Lanka, and Kochi in India. It focuses on the long-term effect resettlement and relocation has on the lives and livelihoods of urban internal displacement of populations (IDPs) primarily from urban poor classes. It also discusses the concerns faced by the displacement in post-war Sri Lanka. It examines the impacts of conflict on poverty and recovery in peri-urban settings. It emphasizes the role of agency of urban IDPs in strengthening their own well-being. It draws attention to how the agency of urban IDPs is compromised by the displacement processes and the weak local level governance structures in the cities. The book is intended for researchers, graduate students, and teachers of Geography, Social Policy, Refugees and Migration Studies, History, International Development, Urban Studies, and South Asian Studies.

Abstract: This book examines the relationship between immigration, crime, police and politics in the city of Buenos Aires during the Cambiemos ("Let's Change") administration, which took place in Argentina between 2015 and 2019. It draws on semi-structured interviews with migrants to offer insights into interactions between police and migrants, narratives of police violence, police attitudes towards migrants, the nexus between police and politics and the perception of the vulnerability of the migratory community of belonging to police action. Using a mixed methods approach, it also draws on secondary quantitative data regarding police practices of detention of migrants and examines political discourses around the immigration-crime association. In essence, it discusses the changes in attitude of the police towards different ethnic-national groups during the administration Cambiemos. In this sense, it presents empirical research and methodological insights from the Global South. Federico Luis Abiuso is Postdoctoral Fellow at Instituto de Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales del Litoral, in Social Sciences (University of Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Professor of Social Research Methodology at the University of Buenos Aires and University of Belgrano, Argentina.

Abstract: “Well informed from the empirical and the theoretical points of view, this important volume helps reflecting on the ways in which multiple crises affects mobility as well as increasing inequalities In terms of class, ethnic background, gender, and generation. Face to these challenges, solidarity is reclaimed but in new forms.” —Donatella Della Porta, Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence, Italy “The book is a necessary intervention on the contemporary juncture of multiple crises, reconfiguring mobility regimes, and morbid resurgences. An impressive array of expertise tracing the whimsical operations of capitalist borders, the resistances they call forth, and the reconfigurations of solidarities and citizenships that results. Instructive for our present, and the future, however it ends up being born…” —Olga Demetriou, Durham Global Security Institute, School of Government and International Affairs, Durham University, UK “The Crisis-Mobility Nexus illuminates the complex relationship between systemic crises and mobility regimes. The book provides a comprehensive understanding of how interconnected crises reconfigure the dynamics of both mobility and immobility through both novel theoretical conceptualizations and intriguing real-world case study analyses.” —Noel B. Salazar, Cultural Mobilities Research (CuMoRe), KU Leuven, Belgium Situated at the intersections of anthropology, migration, citizenship, and social movement studies, this volume theorises a crisis-mobility nexus by focusing on empirical case studies. These concern migration struggles; the entanglements of crisis, social mobility, and citizenship; as well as the impact of COVID-19 (im)mobility on social movements. By highlighting examples from these streams, the book illuminates entanglements between them, while emphasising the role of solidarity as well as de-solidarisation in creating, shaping, or resisting various regimes of mobility. Leandros Fischer is Assistant Professor for International Studies at the Department of Culture and Learning at Aalborg University, Denmark. He researches migration, citizenship, and social and political movements. .

Using case studies from Malaysia, this volume offers timely and invaluable insights into how de-globalization is taking place and its consequences for world peace and prosperity.” ----Amitav Acharya, Distinguished Professor, American University, Washington DC This book focuses on the discourse of de-globalisation in Malaysia by looking at the implications of this process politically, economically, socially, and environmentally. The rise of right-wing political parties and a decline in global economic interdependence have rapidly fuelled the de-globalisation process by creating conflicts and uncertainties in many parts of the world. The battle against the Covid-19 pandemic has spurred a great challenge among the global community, thus becoming a catalyst in the de-globalising process worldwide. While there have been contested opinions on whether we are now in the temporary phase of de-globalisation, what is clear is that the pandemic adds momentum to the trend. Now that the world has entered the post-Covid-19 phase, is the discourse of de-globalisation still relevant? Since the emergence of this pandemic, Malaysia has been facing not only a change of government but also a rapid decline in its economy, a rise in unemployment and living costs, with the human rights situation deteriorating as the State of Emergency was imposed. All of these add up to a shift toward de-globalisation. Chapters in this book, therefore, engage with this issue from different perspectives, such as conventional warfare, bio-constitutional implications to the right to health, labour, migrants and refugees, digital education, indigenous people and so forth. Abstract: This book explores how endangered local interpreters in Afghanistan were seen through Western eyes in the period from 2014, when the West drew down the bulk of its military forces, to the summer of 2021, when NATO forces withdrew completely. The author examines how these interpreters were understood and represented by Western governments, militaries, agencies, press and lobby organisations, how the understandings changed over time, and to what extent the representations reflect distinct rationales for intervention/historic relationships with Afghanistan, specific immigration and anti-terrorism policies, and notions of citizenship. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of translation and interpreting, history, war studies, and migration studies. Abstract: This book provides a broad survey of Chinese rural households at a time of rapid change in China’s rural economy, examining the dual identity of households as consumers as well as producers of goods in terms of supply and demand. Based on the results of the China Rural Household Panel Survey (CRHPS) by Zhejiang University, this book analyzes four types of economic activities of rural households in China, particularly considering changes at the micro level. It examines how households strive to maximize family efficacy through input-output production decision-making in allocating limited resources. Examining data pertaining to agricultural production, land exploitation, migration and nationalization, as well as changes in economic behavior, this book offers a snapshot of the current situation of rural households in China and suggestions to improve living standards and related policies.

Abstract: This book focusses on the interaction between different kinds of violence and radicalization. Current research criticizes linear models of radicalization and assumes that individuals are involved in radical actions even without extremist preferences. In recent years, the research on radicalization and the use of violence has increasingly been focused on this phenomenon of individual radicalization. However, radicalization is a manifold phenomenon on various levels and exists in miscellaneous variations. The book provides an impetus for analysing social situations that contain the potential for the emergence of conflict. This is done through new outlooks on the role of emotions, the influence of narratives and representations, the connection between (non)violence and emancipation and, lastly, new approaches and perspectives on deradicalization.

Abstract: This book is about the social protection of lower-skilled migrants from Sri Lanka. It reasons out the importance of protecting Sri Lankan migrant workers considering the significant economic contribution of lower-skilled migrant workers and their higher level of exposure to risks at all stages of international migration: pre-departure, on the job, and after returnee reintegration. The book explores social protection programmes for low-skilled immigrants from three perspectives: legal aspects, national policies, and programmes. The chapter on legal background for protecting migrant workers focuses on declarations and on labour laws on the national and international level. Policies and programmes identify national level labour policies and other related policies that apply to migrant workers, as well as available social protection programmes for Sri Lankan migrant workers. In turn, the solutions for minimizing the related risks faced by Sri Lankan migrant workers. Highlighting the economic contribution of migrant workers and their vulnerability at all stages of migration, this book offers a timely and important contribution for policy makers and practitioners as well as scholars of migration studies, public policy and related fields.

Abstract: This book is the first of a work in two parts addressing the relations between the transnational society and the state. It is dedicated to the analysis and conceptualisation of transnational societies. This work moves beyond the mere depiction of transborder socialities by shedding light on the fundamental structures underpinning them. It investigates the mechanics of their formation and evolution, their demise or transformation into diasporas. It theorises transmigrants as plural humans embedded and socialised in multiple settings, and whose activities are sustained and framed by three key social institutions: transnational families, businesses and associations. It sheds light on the construction of an intersubjective moral framework regulating the relations between migrants and non-migrants. Finally, it examines the space-time continuum of transnational societies. Thomas Lacroix is a geographer, CNRS director of research at the Centre for International Research of Sciences Po Paris and a fellow of the Institut Convergence Migrations.

Abstract: "This book is certainly useful for historians, as well as economists, sociologists and demographers. Nonetheless, policy makers and all the organizations (including non-profits) dealing with and managing human migration will find this work helpful." - Giovanni Gregorini, Professor, Faculty of Linguistic Sciences and Foreign Literatures and Chair, Department of History and Philology, Italy. This edited collection sheds light on the complex nature of migratory movements through the lens of economic and social history. It addresses a variety of migration issues involving Europe and the Americas in order to offer new insights on past and future migration and integration policies. The volume comprises multi-disciplinary research from both continents dealing with the economic, political, demographical and sociological impact of migration. This interdisciplinary approach aims to stimulate intellectual dialogue on the migration phenomenon among the international community of scholars in Europe and North and South America. It is divided into three parts, which offer an essential contribution to the issue of migration and aim at better understanding the effect that different forms of migration have had and will continue to exert on economic and social change in receiving countries. This book is a valuable resource for a wide audience including academics, students in the economic and social sciences, and government and EU officials working with migration topics. Francesca Fauri teaches Economic History at the Department of Economics of the University of Bologna. Her main research interests concern the history of European economic integration, local business history, Italy’s aviation history and Italian and European migration movements. Debora Mantovani teaches Sociology of Inequality at the Department of Political and Social Science of the University of Bologna. Her main research interests include the sociology of migration and education and primarily focus on children of immigrants’ school integration.

Abstract: This book explores the role of entrepreneurship in economic and social integration of post-Soviet immigrants in the European Union, and the ways in which national institutions influence these processes. The book traces the development of economic models and immigration policies in Austria, Spain, and Hungary and their influence on post-Soviet immigration and entrepreneurship in these countries. As such, the book provides an interdisciplinary approach in the study of institutions relevant to students, researchers and practitioners interested in the economics of migration, labor economics, and the political economy. Abstract: This edited volume explores the principle of solidarity in international and EU law. Although the concept is regularly invoked in international and EU legal and policy debates alike, its meaning, nature and functions, as well as normative contours still remain nebulous. The contributions in this volume reflect on the legal trajectory of solidarity in international and EU law and offer unique insights into the evolution and status of the principle in different fields of international and EU law. By doing so, the book also serves as a springboard for answering broader questions pertaining to what the stage of development of this principle may imply for the two legal orders and their interaction. As the chapters of this book show, the debate on solidarity is premised on conflicting visions regarding the values underpinning the international legal order as well as the self-interest or community-oriented driving forces behind States’ action at the international level. The regional (EU law) perspective offers a new lens through which to revisit classic questions pertaining to the nature of modern international law and to assess its continuing relevance in a world of regional organizations presenting different visions (and levels) of co-operation. This book, the second volume to appear in the Global Europe Series, will appeal to international and EU law researchers and policy-makers alike with an interest in the nature and function of the principle of solidarity in international and EU law. Eva Kassoti is Senior researcher in EU and International Law at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague, The Netherlands and the Academic Co-ordinator of CLEER. Narin Idriz is Researcher in EU Law at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Abstract: By focusing on the question “Why leave?” Amrita Datta tells touching human stories as part of an important global trend: the reconfiguring mobility amidst rapid political changes and an unprecedented pandemic. Nuanced and powerful, the book shows that migration is never about jobs or status only, it is also about everyday dignity and liveability, for instance the ability of making friends and moving around in a city safely, which are in turn conditioned by large political forces. A very timely and significant contribution to migration studies and global anthropology. -------- Biao Xiang, Director, Anthropology of Economic Experimentation, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle, Germany This book tells the stories of Indian immigrants in Germany, including Blue Card holders and students categorized as highly skilled migrants, as well as others choosing shadow migration pathways in order to leave the country. It investigates their motivations for leaving India and choosing Germany as an immigration destination. Grappling with the stories of tech workers fleeing the pandemic, activists fleeing the witch hunting of the government, women escaping gender(ed) violence and queer people seeking freedom, this book uses reflexivity as an analytical tool. Investigation of their transcultural practices also reveals a general intent among Indians to create homes in Germany, despite several challenges to such efforts, including structural and everyday symbolic racism. Amrita Datta is a migration scholar currently based at the Department of Sociology, University of Siegen, Germany, as a Marie Sklowdowska-Curie Fellow. Earlier, she earned a doctoral degree in Sociology from the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. .

Abstract: This book compares anti-immigrant attitudes across 8 countries on 5 continents. It develops a general framework that explores grievances, personal interactions, and entrenched beliefs that explain anti-immigrant attitudes. Using original survey research with 1,000 respondents per country, the authors test the salience of their theoretical expectations across eight very diverse cases: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Africa, the USA, and Turkey. The empirical study allows to decipher the degree to which the drivers of anti-immigrant attitudes are universal or context-specific. One the one hand, they find that positive interactions between natives reduce critical attitudes toward immigrants in all 8 countries. On the other hand, there are some country specific differences in the influence of various grievances and the three proxy variables measuring entrenched beliefs populist attitudes, nationalism and social conservativism. This book appeals to scholars and students of political sociology, comparative politics, public opinion research and related fields.

Abstract: "The revised fourth edition of Migration Theory continues to offer a one-stop synthesis of contemporary thought on migration. Editors Catherine B. Brettell and James F. Hollifield remain committed to include coverage that is comparative and global in scope while enhancing similarities and differences between one academic field and the next. All chapters have been revised to highlight cutting-edge issues in the field of migration today. The 4th edition welcomes two new authors, Professors Marie Price and François Héran, to offer a fresh approach with their chapters on geography and demography respectively. Designed for undergraduate and graduate courses in migration studies, a primary goal of the text is to assist instructors in guiding students who may have little background on migration, to understand important issues and the debates. This ensures Migration Theory is a highly valuable guide not only to the perspectives of one's own discipline but to those of cognate fields"--
