Kurzfassung: In recent years, norms, normalities, and normativities have been disrupted. Although the idea of "normal" is local and subjective, norms are essential to social and collective behaviours, thus the meanings, ideologies, and relationships of power that structure those behaviours. At the same time, the disruption of norms can create disagreements about what is "normal" and inspire novel ways of being. This volume explores - from various discourse-analytic perspectives - the complex relationships between norms and discourse, and draws attention to the thematically and methodologically pluralistic work in Discourse Studies investigating these relationships across various social domains

Kurzfassung: "Unsurprisingly, people are consumed with interest in people - themselves, other people, how we interact as individuals in close relationships or as members of groups, and how groups interact with other groups. Attraction, love, language, communication, influence, persuasion, leadership, conformity, self and identity, culture, aggression, prejudice, and discrimination are all part of the human condition and of our everyday lives. It is therefore not unexpected that people might be preoccupied to understand the psychology underlying these phenomena, and this is precisely what social psychology offers - more than a century of systematic scientific research on, and associated theorizing of, the breadth and diversity of social behavior. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Social Psychology synthesizes what we know about human social behavior and explores avenues for future research. Across 79 scholarly and exhaustively referenced chapters, all written in an accessible style, nearly every topic that social psychologists study is comprehensively covered. Each chapter, which is self-contained but carefully cross-referenced, is written by a distinguished social psychologist and internationally prominent expert on the topic. The Encyclopedia is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in discovering what social psychology has discovered. It is a trusted source that can be turned to with confidence by students and researchers across the social and behavioral sciences, as well as by those who work in policy and applied settings, or by those who are simply interested in social psychology and human social behavior"--

Kurzfassung: "The landscape of our close interpersonal relationships looks significantly different in the 21st Century. Cultural, political, and legal changes have to some degree formed this landscape. For example, many adults choose to remain single, or get married much later in life, in their late 30s or even 40s. Online dating and cohabitation prior to or even instead of marriage have become more readily accepted and the norm rather than an exception. The nature and significance of our intimate relationships have significantly changed as well. Our friendships, on display on social media, have gained special importance in our lives. Issues surrounding gender identity and equity, as well as sexual orientation have also loomed large in the last few decades. With the help of technology, more couples, including same-sex couples, are now able to become parents. From same-sex to open and polyamorous marriages, our society has witnessed important changes in how we define and perceive some of our most important close relationships. The dissolution and reformation of partnerships and families are also important to understand in an age when divorce and step families are common. The formation of families through adoption, whether domestic or international, raises questions of identity and successful parenting"--
Kurzfassung: Over the course of the last few decades, the nature of close personal relationships has evolved dramatically. More and more people choose to marry in their 30s and 40s, meaning that an unprecedented number of people start families later in life than ever. Around the world, more cultures are embracing nontraditional lifestyles, ranging from cohabitation prior to marriage to polyamory. Many regions have grown more accepting of diverse gender and sexual orientations, and as a result, the image of what a family is, who has one, and at what age it is acceptable to start one all look very different from previous generations. Even our friendships have evolved, with technology bridging physical and interpersonal distances in previously impossible ways. This volume compiles the latest research and theory on close relationships in the twenty-first century from multi-disciplinary and international perspectives with the intent of taking stock of the cultural, political, and legal changes that have shaped the relationship landscape. Some of the important shifts that are captured are the rise of singlehood, online dating, and cohabitation, the new importance of social media, marriage equality, and changes in gender norms. Kurzfassung: "The shift to face-to-face communication since the start of the global pandemic has resulted in more conflicts among children and adolescents on social media, and aggressive and bullying behaviour becoming more severe on online platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Signal. This book holistically discusses the theoretical foundations underlying face-to-face and cyberaggression and provides practical advice for preventing and intervening in both forms of aggression and bullying among schoolchildren and adolescents across different countries. It offers practical tools to address notable shifts in expressions of aggression from offline to online settings since the COVID-19 outbreak in both Eastern and Western contexts. With nine chapters contributed by experts from the USA, Canada, Spain, Australia, Taiwan, Mainland China, and Hong Kong, the chapters offer cross-cultural insights, new definitions, theoretical frameworks, plus preventative and intervention strategies. The book also covers protective factors and issues related to both cyber and traditional forms of bullying and aggression. The book ends by forecasting future trends regarding online and offline aggression and bullying. The prevention and intervention strategies contained within for reducing both face-to-face and cyber aggression and bullying among children and adolescents provide invaluable insights to frontliners such as educators, teachers, social workers, counselors, psychologists, parents, and policymakers. It will also appeal to researchers by providing cutting-edge knowledge and conceptualization of online and traditional aggressive and bullying behaviour"--

Kurzfassung: This book combines theoretical and empirical research across various academic disciplines, including economics, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and political science, to describe why individuals adopt political ideologies and how this choice can potentially exacerbate conflict and violence. Ideology is particularly important to conflict. Data on intra- and international conflict shows that the number of ideologically driven conflicts has increased tremendously in recent decades. Although some researchers have started to investigate extensively the link between ideology and conflict, they struggle to find holistic explanations through which ideologies might shape conflict. This book addresses this effort by providing an interrelated multidisciplinary framework to explain the multidimensional functions of ideology. It illustrates that ideologies are not only capable of shaping conflictual behavior or mobilizing political actors, but also of addressing human needs, desires, and preferences. Hence, this book seeks to explain how individuals adopt ideologies that match their underlying needs and preferences; that ideologies have the capacity to reconcile deprived psychological human needs; and that radical groups and organizations use ideologies to recruit individuals and pursue their objectives. To understand these relationships better and to apply the theoretical background to real-world situations, we include real-life cases that describe how depriving individuals of resources that satisfy their underlying needs and preferences can lead them to adopt particular ideologies that are disseminated by radical groups or organizations. These radical groups or organizations then make decisions, which can potentially lead to conflict onset and continuous long-term struggles.

Kurzfassung: The question of how people develop extreme, radical or even terrorist ideas and behaviors is one which is attracting more and more scientific attention. There are many factors that contribute to such extremist attitudes. This book focuses on one specific contributor which has received only little attention in the past: social exclusion. Recent research shows that being kept apart from others, physically or emotionally, is a powerful event in people's lives. The chapters provide an overview of the existing body of research for the first time and explore the exclusion-extremism link in depth by gathering together a seminal collection of essays, written by leading social psychologists. Timely, novel, and highly instructive, this volume delivers an expert understanding of psychological underpinnings of such behavior and offer inspiration for future research

Kurzfassung: Along with the concepts of social role, social group, social network, social class, and social structure, the notion of impersonality is one of the pillars of the sociological imagination: the ability to think beyond individuals and see them as members of particular social categories. Although almost every sociologist is at least implicitly cognizant of the fundamental contrast between personalness and impersonality, it has yet to be explicitly conceptualized. Don't Take It Personally comprehensively addresses the fundamental distinction between the specific and generic visions of personhood. Over the course of the book, Eviatar Zerubavel articulates the fundamental features of impersonality; the process of producing impersonality; the impersonal logic underlying the notion of individuals as countable quantities; the relationship between modernity and impersonality; and considers what is gained and what is lost by impersonalizing so much of social life. Drawing on fascinating examples from diverse social contexts, Don't Take It Personally introduces a general framework to better understand the deeper connection between seemingly disparate phenomena, from racial profiling and hate crimes to "secret Santa" gifting
Kurzfassung: "Don't Take It Personally examines the fundamental distinction between two contrasting visions of personhood - one featuring specific individuals characterized by their singularity and the other envisioning unspecified, effectively generic ones. Whereas the former characterizes our "personal" relationships with our friends, for instance, the latter underlies the more "impersonal" relationships between doctors and patients or store staff and customers. The distinction between those two visions of personhood is most compellingly captured by contrasting a company's decision to lay off ten percent of its employees and only later determine specifically who they would be with an a priori decision to fire those specific individuals, as well as by the U.S. Department of Justice's insistence that "No one is above the law"--

Kurzfassung: "The accruement of crises over the last two decades, with their particular manifestations in the European context, has evoked the feeling of living in exceptional times, as captured in the recurrent claim that we live in the "age of anxiety." The main aim of this collection is to analyse, from a multidisciplinary perspective, the causes and consequences of the current dominance of the discourse of fear, anxiety, and crisis through the experience of distinct and often interdependent moral panics in twenty-first-century Europe. With its multidisciplinary approach, this volume sheds light on the need to view the interrelationship between different crises and their associated affects as crucial in attaining a more nuanced understanding of the aetiology and effects of the current "age of anxiety." This multidisciplinary scrutiny of the interrelationship of twenty-first-century fears, anxiety and crises signals an original engagement with these complex phenomena in order to make their emergence and profound effects on contemporary society more comprehensible. The timeliness of the thematic focus and the rigorous in-depth analyses make this collection relevant to students and academics within the fields of sociology, literary and cultural studies, political science and anthropology, as well as to those in European studies and global studies"--

Kurzfassung: What makes a person want to become a terrorist? Who becomes involved in terrorism, and why? In what ways does participating in violent extremism change someone? And how can people become deradicalized? John Horgan - one of the world’s leading experts on the psychology of terrorism - takes readers on a globe-spanning journey into the terrorist mindset. Drawing on groundbreaking personal interviews as well as decades of research from psychologists and others, he traces the pathways that lead people into violent extremism and explores what happens to them as their involvement deepens. Horgan provides an up-to-date, evidence-based understanding of the patterns, motives, and mentalities of violent extremists from the Islamic State and al-Shabaab to white supremacists and incels. He argues that there is not a straightforward psychological profile of a terrorist, in part because of the great variety of today’s extremists, who are able to attract a more diverse pool of recruits than ever before. But even though there is no one-size-fits-all profile, psychological study can provide crucial insight into why and how people become terrorists.

Kurzfassung: “This book offers a fascinating insight into the everyday lives of women who use drugs in Sweden. Adopting a queer phenomenological perspective, Dr Eleonorasdotter brings a fresh perspective to debates about drug use and notions of ‘harm’. Well-researched and written, the book engages with gendered, classed and stigmatising constructions of women who use drugs represented in policy and practice. We are encouraged to think about what it means to be a woman who uses drugs living and working in Sweden today. An excellent addition to the literature.” -Michelle Addison, Associate Professor of Criminology, Durham University, UK "This is a thought-provoking and intelligent book, brushing aside the negativity which is continually connected with women who use any kind of mind altering substances. Eleonorasdotter is successful in challenging the one-dimensional view of using women as well as in offering a feminist account of the lives of her respondents in the Swedish context. This is a must-read for everyone in the addiction field – users, treaters, researchers, and policymakers." -Elizabeth Ettorre, Professor of Sociology, University of Liverpool, UK. This open access book explores the everyday use of psychoactive substances in contemporary Sweden, focusing on women's use. Drawing on an ethnographic study, it uses critical theory such as queer phenomenology to analyse twelve women’s narratives of their use of drugs. The book also draws attention to the social, legal, cultural, embodied and gendered background of drugs and drug use in the contemporary global North, and how the meanings of drug use have shifted over time, with a specific focus on Sweden. It examines topics such as stigma, happiness, children, the body, gifts, the drug market, medication, sickness and health by directing attention to the women’s orientations towards objects and people, and how the women align or do not align with social and cultural norms. It discusses how drug-related spaces and directions can be analysed in terms of gender and class, and how, in turn, the directions of contemporary society and culture can be affected by drug use. It speaks to academics in Sociology, Criminology, Ethnology, Anthropology, Gender studies, Law and History. Emma Eleonorasdotter is a researcher and lecturer in Ethnology at Lund University, Sweden. She is an ethnologist and a cultural analyst interested in inequality and everyday lives, and has been part of the editorial team of the Swedish anti-racist cultural magazine Mana since 2008. .

Kurzfassung: Hate speech has been extensively studied by disciplines such as social psychology, sociology, history, politics and law. Some significant areas of study have been the origins of hate speech in past and modern societies around the world; the way hate speech paves the way for harmful social movements; the socially destructive force of propaganda; and the legal responses to hate speech. On reviewing the literature, one major weakness stands out: hate speech, a crime perpetrated primarily by malicious and damaging language use, has no significant study in the field of linguistics. Historically, pragmatic theories have tended to address language as cooperative action, geared to reciprocally informative polite understanding. As a result of this idealized view of language, negative types of discourse such as harassment, defamation, hate speech, etc. have been neglected as objects of linguistic study. Since they go against social, moral and legal norms, many linguists have wrongly depicted those acts of wrong communication as unusual, anomalous or deviant when they are, in fact, usual and common in modern societies all over the world. The book analyses the challenges legal practitioners and linguists must meet when dealing with hate speech, especially with the advent of new technologies and social networks, and takes a linguistic perspective by targeting the knowledge the linguist can provide that makes harassment actionable

Kurzfassung: The scientific study of human mating has mushroomed over the past three decades, and this growth in turn has generated a proliferation of evolving literature revealing fresh discoveries about mate attraction, mate choice, mate retention, marital satisfaction, jealousy, infidelity, intimate partner violence, breakups, internet dating, cyberstalking, and sexual coercion. In The Oxford Handbook of Human Mating, editor David M. Buss showcases contributions from"the best and the brightest" scientists in the field, providing up-to-date summaries of theories and empirical evidence of the science of human mating strategies.Much of the research in the field is guided by sexual selection theory. Over 150 years after Darwin's proposal of sexual selection theory, it has become the most important overarching theoretical framework for the scientific study of the mating strategies of all sexually reproducing species, including humans. A mountain of research centered around Darwin's classic book has documented the many complexities of human mate competition and mate choice; how these processes differ between the sexes;and how they differ as a function of sex ratio, mate value, social contexts, ovulation cycles, personality characteristics, and cultural norms and mating rituals. Thus, the science is now ripe for a collection of work by eminent scholars in the field.David M. Buss is a leading researcher and pioneer in the study of human mating strategies, and he applies his expertise to the curation of this volume, which includes major sections covering theories of human mating; mate selection and mate attraction; mate competition; sexual conflict in mating; human pair bonding; the endocrinology of mating; and mating in the modern world

Kurzfassung: "Practicing Sectarianism explores the imaginative and contradictory ways that people live sectarianism. Essays use the concept as an animating principle within a variety of sites across Lebanon and its diasporas and over a range of historical periods. With contributions from historians and anthropologists, this volume reveals the many ways sectarianism is used to exhibit, imagine, or contest power: What forms of affective pull does it have on people and communities? What epistemological work does it do as a concept? How does it function as a marker of social difference? Examining social interaction, each essay analyzes how people experience sectarianism, sometimes pushing back, sometimes evading it, sometimes deploying it strategically, to a variety of effects and consequences. The collection advances an understanding of sectarianism simultaneously constructed and experienced, a slippery and changeable concept with material effects. And even as the book's focus is Lebanon, its analysis fractures the association of sectarianism with the nation-state and suggests possibilities that can travel to other sites. Practicing Sectarianism , taken as a whole, argues that sectarianism can only be fully understood--and dismantled--if we first take it seriously as a practice"--

Kurzfassung: In the decade that has passed since the first edition of this book was published, there has been a significant cultural shift towards the acceptance of LGBTQ people in the United States, yet there are many ways that institutional and interpersonal discrimination takes place in the lives of LGBTQ people. Even as the world changes for the better- with the legalization of same-sex marriage, federal protections for LGBTQ people in the workplace, and more widespread acceptance of LGBTQ people- everyday homophobia and transphobia persists. Microaggressions are subtle, unconscious, and unintentional discrimination that is experienced by people of marginalized groups. In contrast to outright assaults and hate crimes, or conscious prejudicial treatment motivated by fear or dislike of "the other," microaggressions are more covert in nature, sometimes intentional or unintentional, communicating hostile, insulting, or negative messages about people of oppressed groups. This book highlights the microaggressions that LGBTQ people face on an everyday basis and examines the impacts that such experiences have on mental health

Kurzfassung: "A concise guide to understanding, assessing, and addressing bullying. There has been an explosion of media attention on youth bullying and peer victimization over the last decade, with cyberbullying becoming more prevalent through the use of social media. While any bullying has serious negative physical and mental health effects which can lead the bullied individual to great despair and even suicide, there are also negative outcomes for the bullies themselves. This volume, written by leading experts, provides clinicians with clear guidance on how to assess and treat this complex behavior. In this evidence-based guide, practitioners learn about bullying, its prevalence, how cyberbullying differs from in-person bullying, what models are available for understanding how bullying occurs, and the best tools and approaches for assessment of these behaviors. The reader is guided through the most effective school-based prevention programs that aim to reduce bullying, and a clinical vignette gives hands-on insight into how a bullying case in a school is managed. Additional resources are provided in an appendix. This book is ideal for educational psychologists, child psychologists, and anyone working with children and adolescents who is committed to helping those being bullied."--

Kurzfassung: The question of whether men are predisposed to war runs hot in contemporary scholarship and online discussion. Within this debate, chimpanzee behavior is often cited to explain humans' propensity for violence; the claim is that male chimpanzees kill outsiders because they are evolutionarily inclined, suggesting to some that people are too. The longstanding critique that killing is instead due to human disturbance has been pronounced dead and buried. In Chimpanzees, War, and History, R. Brian Ferguson challenges this consensus. By historically contextualizing every reported chimpanzee killing, Ferguson offers and empirically substantiates two hypotheses. Primarily, he provides detailed demonstration of the connection between human impact and intergroup killing of adult chimpanzees. Secondarily, he argues that killings within social groups reflect status conflicts, display violence against defenseless individuals, and payback killings of fallen status bullies. Ferguson also explains broad chimpanzee-bonobo differences in violence through constructed and transmitted social organizations consistent with new perspectives in evolutionary theory. He deconstructs efforts to illuminate human warfare via chimpanzee analogy, and provides an alternative anthropological theory grounded in Pan-human contrasts that is applicable to different types of warfare. Bringing readers on a journey through theoretical struggle and clashing ideas about chimpanzees, bonobos, and evolution, Ferguson opens new ground on the age-old question--are men born to kill?

Kurzfassung: "The book contributes to social psychology's Milgram paradigm and the sociology of morality by offering an original theory of the emergence of moral dilemmas in social interaction. Taking Milgram's notorious "obedience" experiments as a case study of morality in interaction, it argues that Milgram's "obedient" and "defiant" behavioural outcomes should be understood in terms of the tension between participants' moral obligations to the confederate Learner and their institutional obligations to the confederate Experimenter. Using the theoretical and methodological approach of ethnomethodological conversation analysis, the book analyses a large number of archived audio-recordings of Milgram's experiments to support this argument. It is organized in three parts: Part I (Chapters 1-2) introduces the project on Milgram and morality, situating it in relevant literatures and advancing an original theoretical framework for understanding the Milgram paradigm and the sociology of morality. Part II (Ch 3-5) focuses on the experiment itself, applying the theoretical framework to analyse morality in interaction. Part III (Ch 6-8) examines recordings of the post-experiment debriefing interviews that Milgram conducted with participants immediately after each session, addressing current debates relevant to the study of morality and Milgram and offering a new explanation - "doing ordinariness" - for obedient and defiant behaviour in Milgram's lab. Overall, in centring the constitutive orders of social interaction that made the experiment possible in the first place, as well as the participants' own reasons, justifications, and accounts for their actions, the book tells a new, empirically-grounded story about Milgram: one about justice - and injustice - in the making"--

Kurzfassung: This handbook brings together expertise from a range of disciplinary perspectives and geographical contexts to address a key question facing prison policymakers, architects and designers – what kind of carceral environments foster wellbeing, i.e. deliver a rehabilitative, therapeutic environment, or other ‘positive’ outcomes? The Palgrave Handbook of Prison Design offers insights into the construction of custodial facilities, alongside consideration of the critical questions any policymaker should ask in commissioning the building of a site for human containment. Chapters present experience from Australia, Chile, Estonia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States – jurisdictions which vary widely in terms of the history and development of their prison systems, their punitive philosophies, and the nature of their public discourse about the role and purpose of imprisonment, to offer readers theories, frameworks, historical accounts, design approaches, methodological strategies, empirical research, and practical approaches. Dominique Moran is Professor of Carceral Geography in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, UK. Yvonne Jewkes is Professor of Criminology at the University of Bath and Honorary Visiting Professor of Criminology at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Kwan-Lamar Blount-Hill is Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University, USA. Kurzfassung: Volume 2 of Theater(s) and Public Sphere in a Global and Digital Society continues the exploration of the fundamental contribution that artistic and cultural forms bring to social dynamics and how these can consolidate cohabitation and create meaningfulness, in addition to fulfilling economic and regulatory needs. As symbolic forms of collective social practices, artistic and cultural forms weave together the meaning of territories, contexts, and peoples, and also of the generations who traverse them. This volume examines several case studies in the relationship between cultural forms and society. These forms of meaning interact with the social imaginary, mediate marginalization, transform barriers into bridges, and are indispensable tools for any social coexistence and its continuous rethinking in everyday life. The various epistemic approaches present here refer to sociology, theatre studies, cultural studies, psychology, economy of culture, and social statistics which observe theatre as a social phenomenon.Contributors are: Maria Shevstova, Ilaria Riccioni, Roberta Paltrinieri, Gerhard Glüher, Raimondo Guarino, Mariselda Tessarolo, Raffaele Federici, Marco Serino, Maria Grazia Turri, Elena Olesina, Elena Polyudova, Marisol Facuse, Vincenzo Del Gaudio, Laura Gemini, Stefano Brilli, Jessica Camargo Molano, Annalisa Cicerchia, Simona Staffieri and Giulia Cavrini

Kurzfassung: "Humans are social animals. Thus, we cannot survive in isolation. We satisfy our needs through seeking, maintaining, and engaging in relationships and interaction with other people. However, social interactions are complex"--
Kurzfassung: This book takes the reader on an exciting journey presenting the development of resource theory of social exchange originated from Uriel G. Foa and Edna B. Foa. This groundbreaking theory has inspired and generated a tremendous amount of basic and applied research in various disciplines of psychology, sociology, management, economics, marketing, and political science. This book, edited by Kjell Törnblom and Ali Kazemi, two prominent and leading scholars in this field, complements and deepens the Foas' pioneering work from 1974. Within these covers the reader will find an abbreviated version of the Foas' out-of-print original, which is increasingly referred to by current researchers, alongside new chapters on current issues, developments, and applications written by eleven scholars. The book has a simple and clear-cut message: resource theory is not an exercise in academic hair-splitting but has far-reaching societal implications in that it can provide interesting solutions to a wide range of social issues

Kurzfassung: Can respect help to re-establish social relations within and between groups- also in situations of intergroup conflict? In the present lines of research, I propose respect to be of fundamental importance for social cohesion within and between groups. I conceive of respect as recognition as an equal (Honneth, 1995, Simon, 2007) and develop an integrative conceptualization and measurement in order to examine its role for intergroup reconciliation (Chapter 2 and 4). I present two studies examining the distinct influence of respect and disrespect as compared to a neutral condition at first within groups and then between groups (Chapter 3). Within groups, a respectful treatment seems equivalent to a neutral treatment and both increased group identification, group-serving motivation, and category salience equivalently when compared to a disrespectful treatment. As opposed, a respectful treatment between groups decreased category salience compared to disrespectful treatment and may benefit to overcome intergroup boundaries. In the context of intergroup conflict, I present five studies (Chapter 5-7) examining the role of respect on the willingness to reconcile between victims and perpetrators (Shnabel & Nadler, 2008). Here, I focused on how the willingness to reconcile is affected by a respectful message in addition to needs-based messages, or alone. Results revealed that respect had a consistent effect on the willingness to reconcile of victims, in addition to the needs-based message. More importantly perceived respect was the central mediating process between manipulated respect and the willingness to reconcile for victims and perpetrators. I discuss theoretical and practical implications of respect for relations within and between groups as well as methodological limitations and challenges in the experimental study of respect (Chapter 8).

Kurzfassung: "People are social animals and change is a social process. To understand this social process and explain the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of individuals, knowledge of how people are influenced by the presence of others is crucial. In this regard, bias, is a concept with a lot of potential. Cognitive and social biases, by influencing human thinking, feelings, and behaviour, provide insights and knowledge that are helpful, if not essential for the field of organisational behaviour and change management. The statements stated above may seem obvious and self-evident, but practice as well as science, show that it is not. Organizational Behaviour and Change Management: The Impact of Cognitive and Social Bias aims at unleashing the potential of cognitive and social biases to develop a more effective change management theory and practice. To do so thousands of scientific articles were analysed and assessed. The most prominent biases are structured by using a practical and comprehensible framework based on five core social motives (belonging, understanding, controlling, trusting and self-enhancing). With its evidence-based, systematic and integrative approach, this book provides scientists and practitioners in the field of organisational behaviour and change management with the best available evidence, linking biases to organisational behaviour and change and thereby further enriching the field of change management"--

Kurzfassung: This is the rise of the anti-capitalist neurodiversity movement
Kurzfassung: Beyond simplistic narratives of normativity and difference, this book exposes the very myth of the 'normal' brain as a product of intensified capitalism. Exploring the histories of the neurodiversity and disability movements, Chapman shows how the rise of capitalism created an 'empire of normality' that transformed our understanding of the body into that of a productivity machine. The author contends that neurodivergent liberation is possible - but only by challenging the deepest logics of capitalism. This volume is a guide to understanding the systems that shape our bodies, minds and deepest selves - and how we can undo them. --Adapted from publisher's description

Kurzfassung: Recent social and political psychological research indicates that increased access to ancestry testing has strengthened the notion of genetic essentialism among some groups, or the idea that our biology ties us to particular ethnic identities. Using research from both the social sciences and the genetics literature as support, 'Ancestry Reimagined' establishes realistic expectations about what we can learn from our DNA as a foundation for examining the psychological impact of ancestry testing, including the differences between how this information is perceived versus its reality.

Kurzfassung: From fake news to conspiracy theories, from inflammatory memes to misleading headlines, misinformation has swiftly become the defining problem of our era. The crisis threatens the integrity of our democracies, our ability to cultivate trusting relationships, even our physical and psychological well-being-yet most attempts to combat it have proven insufficient. In Foolproof, one of the world's leading experts on misinformation lays out a crucial new paradigm for understanding and defending ourselves against the worldwide infodemic. With remarkable clarity, Sander van der Linden explains why our brains are so vulnerable to misinformation, how it spreads across social networks, and what we can do to protect ourselves and others. Like a virus, misinformation infects our minds, exploiting shortcuts in how we see and process information to alter our beliefs, modify our memories, and replicate at astonishing rates. Once the virus takes hold, it's very hard to cure. Strategies like fact-checking and debunking can leave a falsehood still festering or, at worst, even strengthen its hold. But we aren't helpless. As van der Linden shows based on award-winning original research, we can cultivate immunity through the innovative science of "prebunking": inoculating people against false information by preemptively exposing them to a weakened dose, thus empowering them to identify and fend off its manipulative tactics. Deconstructing the characteristic techniques of conspiracies and misinformation, van der Linden gives readers practical tools to defend themselves and others against nefarious persuasion-whether at scale or around their own dinner table.

Kurzfassung: Why bother refuting your opponents, when you can just take away their platform or career? Greg Lukianoff was one of the first to raise the alarm about the troubling social and psychological consequences of the growing intolerance of opposing viewpoints on university campuses in America; a phenomenon which then swept through the English-speaking world. In this new book, he teams up with Rikki Schlott to show how this trend has spread to a wide range of workplaces and cultural spaces, which are giving up on a culture of free speech in favour of cancel culture. Drawing on original research and data, along with hundreds of new examples from publishing to psychotherapy, comedy, science and medicine, this book shows how the left and the right both work to silence their enemies in different ways. It's not simply a matter of Twitter spats; people are losing their jobs, livelihoods and sometimes their lives over it. Eye-opening, urgent and transformative, The Canceling of the American Mind argues that cancel culture is not merely a moral panic, but a dysfunctional way in which people battle for power, status and dominance: moving us away from being able to argue productively, listen generously and ultimately be civil when we disagree. This book offers concrete steps towards reclaiming a culture of free speech, with materials specifically tailored for parents, teachers, business leaders and all those who use social media. It shows how we can all harness intellectual humility to become more resilient and open minded

Kurzfassung: The 'ethical turn' in anthropology has been one of the most vibrant fields in the discipline in the past quarter-century. It has fostered new dialogue between anthropology and philosophy, psychology, and theology and seen a wealth of theoretical innovation and influential ethnographic studies. This book brings together a global team of established and emerging leaders in the field and makes the results of this fast-growing body of diverse research available in one volume. Topics covered include: the philosophical and other intellectual sources of the ethical turn; inter-disciplinary dialogues; emerging conceptualizations of core aspects of ethical agency such as freedom, responsibility, and affect; and the diverse ways in which ethical thought and practice are institutionalized in social life, both intimate and institutional. Authoritative and cutting-edge, it is essential reading for researchers and students in anthropology, philosophy, psychology and theology, and will set the agenda for future research in the field

Kurzfassung: This book provides original evidence arguing for dignity as an indicator of public health, by offering a scientific framework for measuring dignity and its social determinants. Hitlin and Andersson show that dignity can be efficiently measured by using simple survey items that ask individuals whether there is "dignity" in their life or in how they are treated by others. Hitlin and Andersson show that dignity possesses universal value for health and well-being in America, providing a scientific basis for collective consensus and social inspiration

Kurzfassung: How do parents cooperate with each other, what value do they attach to their interaction and how is the degree of cooperation related to social status? The study takes a close look at the social relationships among various groups of Chinese parents at a Chinese Mandarin language school in a metropolitan city in Germany. Taking an ethnographic approach, it captures a vivid picture of the parental social interactions in and outside the Chinese school setting. The study reveals the significance of social interactions, discussing it in relation to the parents’ socioeconomic backgrounds and individual migrant trajectories.

Kurzfassung: Maritime spaces are socially constructed by humans and refer to seas and islands, coasts, port cities and villages, as well as ships and other human-made marine structures. Social interaction with marine environments and living beings, e.g. in a symbolic, cultural or economic manner, has led to the emergence of spatial structures which affect the knowledge, beliefs, meanings and obstinately patterns. Those structures shape mutual expectations of human beings and form the perception, imagination, or memory of inhabitants of maritime spaces. They enable or restrict human action, construct people's everyday life, their norms and values, and are changeable. Kurzfassung: Conspiracy theories were already around before the Covid-19 pandemic, but public attention to this topic increased during that time (Eysenbach, 2020; Grodzicka & Harambam, 2021), potentially also due to the lower adherence to norms ensuring public safety among people believing in conspiracy theories (Pummerer, Böhm, et al., 2022). Conspiracy theories are explanations for societal and political events that allege secret, yet harmful, arrangements by a powerful individual or group (Douglas et al., 2017; Goertzel, 1994). In addition to lower adherence to safety-measures regarding Covid-19, believing in conspiracy theories has also been related to other behaviors that go against the accepted social norm, for example a greater willingness to engage in everyday crimes and violent political action, and lower prosocial engagement and intentions to vote in public elections (Imhoff et al., 2021; Jolley et al., 2019; Jolley & Douglas, 2014b; van der Linden, 2015). Despite many examples linking the belief in conspiracy theories to single non-normative behaviors, a broader examination of the relationship between and causality of a conspiracy belief and norm adherence so far is missing. This dissertation examines the relationship between conspiracy belief and adherence to social norms. It reports that higher conspiracy belief is related to lower norm adherence across different kinds of social norms, and that a higher conspiracy belief subsequently leads to lower adherence to norms questioned by the conspiracy theory. In a second step, it also examines different ways of how norm adherence among people believing in conspiracy theories might be increased. Studies reported in this dissertation suggest that norm adherence can be increased by addressing conspiracy theories early on, through social interventions based on the expectations of people close to the individual, and by prompting reasoning why a behavior is considered normative. Overall, this dissertation suggests that the lower norm adherence among people believing in conspiracy theories is a result of a different social reality that is accompanied and caused by the belief in conspiracy theories. By describing and examining this social reality through one theoretical and four empirical manuscripts, this dissertation makes an important contribution in understanding conspiracy belief. It further opens up new routes for interventions aimed at reducing conspiracy belief as well as increasing norm adherence among people higher in conspiracy belief.

Kurzfassung: "The monograph The Paradigm of Social Interaction presents a paradigmatic synthesis in sociology. This is a reaction to the growing paradigmatic divisions in the discipline and an attempt at fostering the cumulative development of sociological knowledge. The suggested conceptual fusion includes micro-sociological interaction theories, recent theories of organizational interactions and the experience from the study on global trends. The intention is to support the building and explanatory application of middle-range theories in all action spheres and at all micro-, mezzo- and macro-social structural levels. The paradigmatic synthesis is developed around five analytical concepts of the determinants of social interactions: environmental, technological, economic, political and cultural complexes. Another conceptual framework fostering explanations consists of social actors, relations and processes as key parameters of the social interaction paradigm. The book also examines COVID pandemic as a multidimensional crisis, applying the synthetic paradigm as a heuristic tool and knowledge organizing framework. It is used in the studies on social innovations, societal transformations, and global social trends as well. The book will be of interest to researchers, university teachers, doctoral and Master students in the fields of sociology, social theory, critical sociology, philosophy of social sciences, innovation and societal transformation studies"--

Kurzfassung: This book puts forward a new model of acculturation combining psychological, sociolinguistic and identity theories to study Turkish immigrants across the globe. The authors argue that such a multidisciplinary perspective is very important in understanding acculturation processes in migrants, particularly for pivotal aspects such as language and identity. Studying one group or several groups within a country is the most common methodological approach in acculturation studies. The authors argue on the basis of their extensive ethnographic work that focusing on one immigrant ethnic group across countries instead provides deeper insights into interactive acculturation orientations of both the receiving societies and immigrant groups. They therefore synthesize findings from their work on Turkish immigrants in Australia and several countries in Europe. Moreover, they include extensive accounts of acculturation across several generations of Turkish migrants, thereby giving readers insights into the long-term acculturation process. The book critically discusses language maintenance and shift, child-rearing practices and socialization beliefs, and educational achievement in Turkish immigrants, and uses a mixed-methods approach. It is meant for researchers and policy makers interested in acculturation and the role of the acculturation context. In a nutshell, the book stresses the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of linguistic habits and cultural integration tendencies and convinces the reader about the complexity of the background factors that play a role in shaping the behaviour of immigrant minorities. Anyone who reads the book will be equipped with the skills to critically assess research on immigrant language maintenance

Kurzfassung: "Psychological research has produced a rich body of empirical data documenting humanity's propensity to commit infidelity in the context of long-term relationships, but comparatively little work has been dedicated to synthesizing these data into an integrated framework that encompasses the full range of its processes, from why it occurs in the first place to how it affects the long-term relationship thereafter. This edited handbook integrates a broad range of topics such as characteristics related to the propensity to commit infidelity, sex differences in reactions to infidelity, our inclination to dissolve relationships after infidelity, and other responses to infidelity. It showcases contributions from experts in social psychology, evolutionary psychology, and others who specialize in research on romantic relationships. The handbook discusses the processes of infidelity alongside sources of variation, such as sexual orientation, developmental life history, individual differences, and culture. This volume captures the interdisciplinary quality of research on the predictors, nature, and consequences of infidelity for the broader social scientific community interested in trust in romantic relationships"--

Kurzfassung: A revolutionary, evidence-based guide for developing resilience and grit to confront our whitewashed history and build a better future- in the vein of Think Again and Do Better. The racial fault lines of our country have been revealed in stark detail as our national news cycle is flooded with stories about the past. If you are just now learning about the massacre in Tulsa, the killing of Native American children in compulsory "residential schools" designed to destroy their culture, and the incarceration of Japanese Americans, you are not alone. The seeds of today's inequalities were sown in past events like these. The time to unlearn the whitewashed history we believed was true is now. If we close our eyes to our history, we cannot make the systemic changes needed to mend our country. Today's challenges began centuries ago and have deepened and widened over time. To take the path to a more just future, we must not ignore the damage but see it through others' eyes, bear witness to it, and uncover its origins. As historians share these truths, we will need psychologists to help us navigate the shame, guilt, disbelief, and resistance many of us feel. Dolly Chugh, award-winning professor of social psychology and author of the acclaimed The Person You Mean to Be, gives us the psychological tools we need to grapple with the truth of our country. Through heartrending personal histories and practical advice, Chugh invites us to dismantle the systems built by our forbearers and work toward a more just future

Kurzfassung: The book goes beyond mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) to a holistic approach centered on healing. The book lays at the intersection of peacebuilding, global mental health, and development. In many parts of the world, entire generations live in chronic violence—just surviving. The exposure to violence has long-lasting effects which are not well accounted for in conflict analysis, stabilization efforts, peacebuilding, and governance initiatives. Extreme exposure to violence, abuse, neglect, and marginalization negatively affects levels of resilience and the ability of affecting the transition from violence to peace. A healing-centered peacebuilding approach requires fundamental changes in how systems are designed, organizations function, and practitioners engage with people, their communities, and their institutions. Key elements of the practice-based approach included inclusion, customization and contextualization, breaking cycles of violence, systems thinking, and trauma-informed tools. The approach considers emotional distress to be a critical variable in violent conflict and instability. Trauma is not only a consequence of violence, but also a cause of instability.

Kurzfassung: "Researchers in group psychology and group psychotherapy rarely consider each other's work, despite their clear areas of common interest. This book demonstrates how these separate but related lines of research can be used to inform and enrich each other. Led by two past presidents of APA's Society of Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy, this book features expert contributors who examine the interface between social or organizational research on groups and clinical research, as well as the application of findings in each area. They reveal that different kinds of groups are far more similar than they are different, and illustrate how group psychology as a line of inquiry and practice benefits from improved dialogue among its domains. For example, there is growing literature on how individual personality factors such as attachment can affect group processes and outcomes in group psychotherapy. Similarly, research on expectations of social inclusion and ostracism in groups has a long history in social psychology, and there is great potential for these areas of inquiry to inform future research in both clinical and social contexts. The book will inspire greater collaboration among researchers"--
