    Abstract: Power is an inescapable feature of human existence. It plays a role in all social contexts and is particularly important in the functioning of organizations and work groups. Organizational researchers have certainly recognised the importance of power but have traditionally focused on its negative aspects. Yet power can also have very positive effects. Power and Interdependence in Organizations capitalizes on significant developments in social science over the past twenty years to show how managers and employees can manage power in order to make it a constructive force in organizations. Written by a team of international academics, the book explores both the positive and negative aspects of power, identifying opportunities and threats. It shows that harnessing the positive aspects of power, as well as controlling its more destructive effects, has the potential to revolutionise the way that organizations function, making them both more humane and productive

    Abstract: When Nigeria hosted the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in 1977, it celebrated a global vision of black nationhood and citizenship animated by the exuberance of its recent oil boom. Andrew Apter's The Pan-African Nation tells the full story of this cultural extravaganza, from Nigeria's spectacular rebirth as a rapidly developing petro-state to its dramatic demise when the boom went bust. According to Apter, FESTAC expanded the horizons of blackness in Nigeria to mirror the global circuits of its economy. By showcasing masks, dances, images, and souvenirs from its many diverse ethnic groups, Nigeria forged a new national culture. In the grandeur of this oil-fed confidence, the nation subsumed all black and African cultures within its empire of cultural signs and erased its colonial legacies from collective memory. As the oil economy collapsed, however, cultural signs became unstable, contributing to rampant violence and dissimulation. The Pan-African Nation unpacks FESTAC as a historically situated mirror of production in Nigeria. More broadly, it points towards a critique of the political economy of the sign in postcolonial Africa.

    Abstract: Main description: Die Globalisierung, wie sie sich im Zuge der Epochenwende von 1989/90, der weltweiten Öffnung der Märkte, der neuen Kommunikationstechnologien und einer beschleunigten Mobilität herausgebildet hat, steht im Begriff, die Welt tiefreichend zu verändern. Soziale, wirtschaftliche, staatliche und kulturelle Identitäten und Vertrautheiten werden zunehmend in Frage gestellt.Von diesen Befunden gehen die in diesem Band publizierten Beiträge aus. Dabei stellen sich Fragen in zwei Richtungen: Wird die Globalisierung dazu führen, daß die Unterschiede und Besonderheiten zwischen den Nationen und Völkern immer mehr verschwinden? Welche kulturellen Kompetenzen sind erforderlich, um die Globalisierung im Sinne eines sozial verträglichen, wirtschaftlich erfolgreichen und damit möglichst gerechten Ausgleichs zu gestalten? Eine dritte durchgängige Perspektive des Bandes ist darin zu sehen, daß hier auch die religiösen, insbesondere christlichen Implikationen der Globalisierung eine ihnen zustehende Beachtung finden.Die Beiträge gehen auf das 8. Deutsch-Amerikanische Kolloquium zurück, das auf Initiative der School of Philosophy der Catholic University, Washington DC, und der Katholischen Sozialwissenschaftlichen Zentralstelle, Mönchengladbach, vom 12. bis 18. August 2004 in Detroit durchgeführt wurde.

    Abstract: As more historians acknowledge the central significance of science and technology in the making of the first Industrial Revolution, the need for a good, general history of the achievements of the Scientific Revolution has grown. Scientific Culture and the Making of the Industrial West explains this historical process by looking at how and why scientific knowledge became such an integral part of the culture of Europe. Seeking to understand the cultural origins of the Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth century, this text first looks at the scientific culture of the seventeenth century, focusing not only on England but following through with a study of the history of science and technology in France, the Netherlands, and Germany. Comparative in structure, this text explains why England was so much more successful at this transition than its continental counterparts
    Abstract: It also integrates science with worldly concerns, focusing mainly on the entrepreneurs and engineers who possessed scientific insight and who were eager to profit from its advantages, demonstrating that during the mid-seventeenth century, British science was presented within an ideological framework that encouraged material prosperity. Readable summaries of the major scientific achievements are included to better communicate the central innovations of the period, and recent scholarship is added to help enhance the discussion of the integration of science into Western culture. Blending the history of science and technology with cultural history, this text is ideal for early modern European history courses, as well as for courses in cultural studies and the history of science

    Abstract: Pfeffer argues that the world of organizations has changed in several important ways, including the increasing externalization of employment and the growing use of contingent workers; the changing size distribution of organizations, with a larger proportion of smaller organizations; the increasing influence of external capital markets on organizational decision-making and a concomitant decrease in managerial autonomy; and increasing salary inequality within organizations in the US compared both to the past and to other industrialized nations. These changes and their public policy implications make it especially important to understand organizations as social entities. But Pfeffer questions whether the research literature of organization studies has either addressed these changes and their causes or made much of a contribution to the discussion of public policy
