Abstract: Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important topic in the cultural sector. While museums have long focused on building digital object databases, the existing data can now become a field of application for machine learning, deep learning and foundation model approaches. This goes hand in hand with new artistic practices, curation tools, visitor analytics, chatbots, automatic translations and tailor-made text generation. With a decidedly interdisciplinary approach, the volume brings together a wide range of critical reflections, practical perspectives and concrete applications of artificial intelligence in museums and offers an overview of the current state of the debate.

Abstract: We witness an era with more screens than ever before, and within each screen, a multitude of visual varieties. Lisa Gotto investigates this medial diversity as a field of tension between large and small forms of digital image culture. This includes, on the one hand, the immersive potential of large image arrangements, such as digital 3D cinema, and, on the other hand, the compactness of mobile image forms, such as those of the smartphone film or the media practices of Instagram. Weaving together a rich variety of examples and sources, this book presents a multifaceted collection of essays that explore the transformational potential of digital media culture, contextualize its media-technical conditions, and reflect on its social consequences.

Abstract: Museums, Transculturality, and the Nation-State -- Introduction: Museum Narratives between Transculturality and the Nation-State -- 'Come On Home' -- Museums in Contemporary Educational and Cultural Systems [1971] -- Remembering and Forgetting in the National Museums of South Asia -- Repatriating Cultural Identity -- Die Völker der Erde (People of the Earth) -- On the In-Betweenness of the Paintings of Jean Baptiste Vanmour (1671-1737) at the Rijksmuseum -- Shameful Objects, Apologizing Subjects -- Towards a Cosmopolitical Exhibition Practice -- Visiting the Colección Poyón, or Indigeneity and the Nation-State in Guatemala -- Contributors.
Abstract: While the nation-state gave rise to the advent of museums, its influence in times of transculturality and post-/decolonial studies appears to have vanished. But is this really the case? With case studies from various geo- and sociopolitical contexts from around the globe, the contributors investigate which roles the nation-state continues to play in museums, collections, and heritage. They answer the question to which degree the nation-state still determines practices of collection and circulation and its amount of power to shape contemporary narratives. The volume thus examines the contradictions at play when the necessary claim for transculturality meets the institutions of the nation-state.With contributions by Stanislas Spero Adotevi, Sebastián Eduardo Dávila, Natasha Ginwala, Monica Hanna, Rajkamal Kahlon, Suzana Milevska, Mirjam Shatanawi, Kavita Singh, Ruth Stamm, Andrea Witcomb.

Abstract: How are sounds and music on the radio used from the viewpoint of identity politics? Current research on the sensual dimension of daily life based on broadcasting and sonorous cultural heritage.

Abstract: The same computer games are played by youths all over the world, and worldwide games become matters of concern in relation to children: worries rise about addiction, violence, education, time, and economy. Yet, these concerns vary depending upon where they are situated: in families, legal contexts, industry or science. They also play out differently across countries and cultures. This situated nature of computer game concerns is generally neglected. Not in this book: It gives a detailed mosaic of the complex and multiple everyday realities of computer game concerns in relation to children, as they are variably situated throughout society and across cultures

Abstract: Nadja Bieletzki explores how university presidents lead universities. She provides insights into the upper echelons of higher education management and focuses especially on university presidents in Germany. Special attention is given to the career background of university presidents and the way they conduct reform projects. Based on the results from semi-structured expert interviews and their qualitative analysis, the author shows that university presidents do not use all their formal power although their position has been strengthened by law. This can be explained by the collegial characteristics of universities, which drive and restrict presidential actions. Contents Analyzing Higher Education Management Career Paths of University Presidents Understanding Reforms in Universities with Micro/Organizational Politics Target Groups Researchers and students in the fields of sociology and political sciences with a focus on higher education research and science studies Science managers at higher education and research institutions as well as ministries with an interest in scientific results of higher education research The Author Dr. Nadja Bieletzki is coordinator of the Leibniz Center for Science and Society (LCSS) at the Leibniz University of Hannover.

Abstract: Lisa Dühring reconstructs the relationship between public relations and marketing research on a metatheoretical level. She presents a concise systematization of the theoretical discourse in both disciplines since the beginning of the twentieth century by differentiating key phases of development and evaluating current research approaches. This study argues for a stronger connection of both disciplines and a better profiling within the mother disciplines of communication and business studies by fostering critical and interpretative approaches. This book is strongly recommended to everybody interested in the history and epistemology of marketing and public relations theory and the relationship between both fields. Contents • State of Research: The Academic Debate on the Relationship between Marketing and Public Relations • The Philosophy of the Social Sciences • The History Marketing Thought • The History of Public Relations Thought • New Perspectives on the Future Relationship between Marketing and Public Relations Target Groups Researchers, students and practitioners in the fields of marketing, marketing communications, corporate communications, communications management, public relations, strategic communications and organizational communication The Author Dr. Lisa Dühring is a former research associate at the Institute for Communication and Media Studies, Leipzig, Germany and currently works at the International Office at Leipzig University.

- Vorwort , Literaturangaben , Beiträge in Deutsch, 1 Beitrag in Englisch

Abstract: The cultural field of advertising is a much-debated topic with perspectives focusing on a range of concepts from harassment and the anxiety of influence to notions of desire and affirmation. Abstract: Drawing on the sociology of Max Weber, Barbara Thériault investigates today's relations toward difference within German police forces. Accompanying and interviewing police officers whose job it is to contribute to the acknowledgement of difference, the sociologist outlines three ideal types of actors - an empathetic, a principled, and an opportunist one - and the motives underlying their actions. A fourth type, the specialist, is conspicuously absent. Why is that so? Solving this enigma helps depicting the relations to difference within police forces: it points to a specific »spirit« of diversity and a singular way to apprehend the individual in Germany.

Abstract: Councillors are the essence of local representative democracy, linking ordinary citizens and decision-makers in municipal arenas. In cross-national perspective, and taking in countries from across Europe, this book analyses the recruitment patterns, career, party associations, role perceptions, and attitudes to democracy, representation, and participation of local councillors. Matters such as gender, parties, institutions, municipal reform, functions in governance networks, and councillor influence are considered using data collected in an international survey, covering some 12,000 members of the local political elite. Drawing on diverse and eclectic literature, the contributions in this volume comprise a comprehensive and revealing analysis of modern councillors. Abstract: Sara Nofri combines several research methods (multilingual bibliographic research, quantitative content analysis, semiotic text analysis, interviews to journalists) and a cross-cultural, interdisciplinary perspective for investigating environmental communication in the daily quality press of Germany, Italy, Sweden and UK. She provides an in-depth portrait of the features, the focus, the themes and stakeholders involved, individuates different "cultures of environment" and "cultures of communication", and provides insights and practical tools to analyze and then evaluate environmental communication. The methodological approach of this study can be readily transposed to studies investigating other contexts, cultures and media. Abstract: Though battling virtual worlds in high fidelity started to spread from youth into mainstream culture decades ago the study of music in games is still a research desideratum of media studies and musicology. Particularly in German-speaking countries this issue has only been paid very little attention. This limited recognition is contradictory to a global game market worth 30 billion dollars, and as important for the production and distribution of music as other media sectors. Numbers of computer users have multiplied in recent years. Especially in the formative teenage years, games are just as i

Abstract: Wie analysiert man eigentlich populäre Musik?

These processes lead to an inner globalization of societies in which worldwide constellations of »reflexive« (Ulrich Beck), »multiple« (Shmuel N. Eisenstadt), »entangled« (Shalini Randeria) and »global« (Arjun Appadurai) modernities simultaneously and immediately clash in social action: a process of cosmopolitanization in which »the global« is localized and »the local« is globalized in radical new ways. In this book, an international selection of prominent critical thinkers address this premise and provide their interpretations of imminent challenges, concomitant social dynamics and political implications.
