    Abstract: "Medieval documents reveal that for centuries of European history, singing for a person at the moment of death was considered to be the ideal accompaniment to a life's ending. Rituals for the dying were well developed, practiced widely, and thoroughly integrated with music. Indeed, these rituals reveal that music, rather than the Eucharist, held a privileged position at the final breath. Music in Medieval Rituals for the End of Life examines and recovers, to the extent possible, the music sung for the dying during the Middle Ages. The book offers a view of the plainchant repertory through the sources of individual institutions. The first four chapters contain a series of "case studies": close readings of rituals from diverse communities, each as they appear in a single source. The rituals' chants are transcribed into modern notation and analyzed, both for their relationships between text and melody and for their functions within the rituals. Created for the powerful and the poor, the educated and the uneducated, women and men, monastics, clerics, and laity, these manuscripts offer a glimpse into the religious practices that distinguished communities from one another and bound them together within a single tradition. The book provides the first editions of the rituals' chants and considers the functions of the music. Why was music given such a prominent position within the deathbed liturgies? Why did communities gather and sing when a loved one was dying? The manuscripts reveal a lost art of comforting the dying and the grieving"--

Their chapters explore an acoustemology of intimacy, woman-centered eroticism generated through musical performance, desire and longing in ethnographic knowledge production, and listening as intimacy. On the other end of the spectrum, authors engage with and question the fetishization of race in jazz; examine conceptions of vulgarity and profanity in movement and dance-ethnography; and address pain, trauma, and violation, whether physical, spiritual, intellectual, or political. Authors in this volume strive toward empathetic, ethical, and creative ethnographic engagements that summon vulnerability and healing. They propose pathways to aesthetic, discursive transformation by reorienting conceptions of knowledge as emergent, performative, and sonically enabled.     Abstract: "Scholars in architectural and urban history have, over the last decade, been trying to come to terms with architecture's 'neoliberal turn' and its various impacts - from municipal policy to the artistic imagination. However most scholarship has focussed on generalizations, with very little work to date focussing on specific cases. Architecture and Retrenchment brings one such case to the fore - investigating the relation between architecture and the Swedish Model of the welfare state. It tracks the response of architecture to the gradual retrenchment and ultimate dismantling of the Swedish welfare state - which was, in its heyday, world-famous for its integration of architecture and the built environment into the welfare system. Ultimately, neoliberal economics prevailed, yet this book reveals how new architectural strategies and techniques were developed in order to protect the agency of architecture in the newly reorganised society of the 1980s and 1990s. Through eight in-depth case-studies, the book situates the often abstract, generalised discourse of neoliberalism and privatisation in specific architectural sites, and provides an original interpretation of how architecture, space, aesthetics, and politics converged at the end of the twentieth century"--

    Abstract: "Ralph Ellison famously characterized ensemble jazz improvisation as "antagonistic cooperation." Both collaborative and competitive, musicians play with and against one another to create art and community. In Antagonistic Cooperation, Robert G. O'Meally shows how this idea runs throughout twentieth-century African American culture to provide a new history of Black creativity and aesthetics. From the collages of Romare Bearden and paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat to the fiction of Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison to the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, O'Meally explores how the worlds of African American jazz, art, and literature have informed one another. He argues that these artists drew on the improvisatory nature of jazz and the techniques of collage not as a way to depict a fractured or broken sense of Blackness but rather to see the Black self as beautifully layered and complex. They developed a shared set of methods and motives driven by the belief that art must involve a sense of community. O'Meally's readings of these artists and their work emphasize how they have not only contributed to understanding of Black history and culture but also provided hope for fulfilling the broken promises of American democracy"--

Jahrhundert. Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt dabei auf der Musik der Gruppen Runrig und Capercaillie, die, eingebettet in die soziokulturellen und kulturpolitischen Veränderungen der „Gaelic Renaissance“ in den 1970er Jahren, begannen, unter Einfluss angloamerikanischer populärer Musikstile eigene, hybride musikalische Ausdrucksformen zu kreieren.〈ger〉
    Abstract: The present work describes and analyses the causes and the course of the revival of Gaelic traditional music in Scotland in the 20th century, in particular using the musicological and cultural theoretical models by Tamara Livingston and Owe Ronström. The work focuses on the music of the groups Runrig and Capercaillie, both of which, embedded in the sociocultural and cultural-political changes of the “Gaelic Renaissance” in the 1970s and under the influence of Anglo-American popular musical styles, began to create their own hybrid musical forms of expression.〈eng〉

Global conflicts of the 20th century fundamentally transformed not only national boundaries, power relations, and global economies, but also the arts and culture of every nation involved. An important, unacknowledged aspect of these conflicts is that they have unique musical soundtracks. Music in World War II explores how music and sound took on radically different dimensions in the United States and Europe before, during, and after World War II. Additionally, the collection examines the impact of radio and film as the disseminators of the war's musical soundtrack. Contributors contend that the European and American soundtrack of World War II was largely one of escapism rather than the lofty, solemn, heroic, and celebratory mode of "war music" in the past. Furthermore, they explore the variety of experiences of populations forced from their homes and interned in civilian and POW camps in Europe and the United States, examining how music in these environments played a crucial role in maintaining ties to an idealized "home" and constructing politicized notions of national and ethnic identity. Examinations of music signification have been an essential component in thinking about music for millennia, but it is only in the last few decades that music signification has been established as an independent area of study. During this time, the field has grown exponentially, incorporating a vast array of methodologies that seek to ground how music means and to explore what it may mean. Research in music signification typically embraces concepts and practices imported from semiotics, literary criticism, linguistics, the visual arts, philosophy, sociology, history, and psychology, among others.     Abstract: Music has long been an avenue for protest, seen as a way to promote freedom and equality, instill hope, and fight for change. Popular music, in particular, is considered to be an effective form of subversion and resistance under oppressive circumstances. But as Nomi Dave shows us in The Revolution's Echoes, the opposite is also true-music can often support, rather than challenge, the powers that be. Examining fifty years of history in Guinea, Dave introduces readers to the music supporting the authoritarian regime of former president Sékou Touré, and to the musicians who, even long after his death, have continued to praise dictators and avoid dissent. Dave shows that this isn't just the result of state manipulation-even in the absence of coercion, musicians and their audiences take real pleasure in musical praise of leaders. Time and again, whether in traditional music or in newer genres such as rap, Guinean musicians have celebrated state power and authority. With The Revolution's Echoes, Dave insists that we must grapple with the uncomfortable truth that some forms of music choose to support authoritarianism, generating new pleasures and new politics in the process

    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle.     Abstract: With its dynamic choreographies and booming drumbeats, taiko has gained worldwide popularity since its emergence in 1950s Japan. Harnessed by Japanese Americans in the late 1960s, taiko's sonic largesse and buoyant energy challenged stereotypical images of Asians in America as either model minorities or sinister foreigners. While the majority of North American taiko players are Asian American, more than four hundred groups now exist across the United States and Canada, and these groups are comprised of people from a variety of racial and ethnic identities. Using ethnographic and historical approaches combined with performance description and analysis, this text explores the connections between taiko and Asian American cultural politics at the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality.

    Abstract: Singing the Congregation examines how contemporary worship music shapes the way evangelical Christians understand worship and argues that participatory worship-music performances have brought into being new religious social constellations (“modes of congregating”). Through ethnographic investigation of five of these modes—concert, conference, church, public, and networked congregations—this book seeks to reinvigorate the analytic categories of “congregation” and “congregational music.” Drawing from theoretical models in ethnomusicology, congregational studies, and ecclesiology, Singing the Congregation reconceives the congregation as a fluid, contingent social constellation that is actively performed into being through communal practice—in this case, the musically structured participatory activity known as “worship.” By extension, “congregational music-making” is recast as a participatory religious musical practice capable of weaving together a religious community inside and outside local institutional churches. Congregational music-making is not only a means of expressing local concerns and constituting the local religious community; it is also a potent way to identify with far-flung individuals, institutions, and networks that this global religious community comprises. The unique congregations examined in each chapter include but extend far beyond local churches, revealing widespread conflicts over religious authority and far-ranging implications for how evangelicals position themselves relative to other groups in North America and beyond.

    Abstract: In der aktuellen Berichterstattung werden vor allem die Unterschiede zwischen dem christlichen Westen und dem islamischen Osten betont. Bei einem näheren Blick auf die Geschichte der beiden Kulturräume lässt sich jedoch eine ähnliche Entwicklung ausmachen: Als Renaissance wird sowohl eine Phase im Heiligen Römischen Reich unter den Habsburgern als auch im Herrschaftsgebiet der Timuriden bezeichnet.Diese vermeintliche Ähnlichkeit bildet den Ausgangspunkt für eine Untersuchung der beiden Kulturräume in der Zeit um 900/1500. Damals lenkten die Herrscher Maximilian I. und Babur die Geschicke der beiden Dynastien. Ihre Selbstzeugnisse bilden die Grundlage für eine vergleichende Analyse. Die Fragen, die im Rahmen der Arbeit behandelt werden, lauten: Welche signifikanten Ähnlichkeiten zwischen diesen Texten lassen sich ausmachen und woher rühren sie? Lassen sich Unterschiede feststellen, die Hinweise auf eine Auseinanderentwicklung der beiden Kulturräume geben?Die Analyse lässt zahlreiche Gemeinsamkeiten zutage treten. Es zeigt sich, dass der typologische Vergleich literarischer Texte dazu beitragen kann, aktuelle Entwicklungen, in denen die trennenden Elemente zwischen Westen und Osten stark betont werden, historisch präziser einzuordnen. Doch auch der herausgearbeitete Unterschied kann aufschlussreich sein: Er lässt sich als Vorzeichen auf die Auseinanderentwicklung beider Kulturräume im Bereich der Ambiguitätstoleranz deuten.
    Abstract: The current media coverage emphasizes the differences between “Christian West” and “Islamic East”. However, a similarity in development can be found by having a closer look at the history of the Islamic world. For example, a period during the rule of the Timurid dynasty is also known as ‘Renaissance’. It took place at the same time as the ‘Renaissance’ under the rule of the Habsburgs in the Holy Roman Empire.This apparent similarity is used as a starting point for an analysis of the situation of the two cultural regions around 900/1500. The powerful dominions of the Habsburgs and the Timurids were ruled by the emperors Maximilian the First and Babur during that time. They both wrote self-testimonies which have been used for a comparative analysis. The thesis seeks to provide answers to the following questions: Which kind of important similarities can be found in the texts, and where do they originate? Can significant differences be identified which may reveal the starting point of the diverging development of the cultures?The results of the analysis indicate many similarities in the self-presentations. They show that a typological comparison of literary texts can lead to a more precise and historically correct interpretation than that of current trends, which rather promote differences between the cultures of West and East. Even the detected difference can be insightful: it is seen as an early sign of divergence of the two cultures in the area of intolerance of ambiguities.

    Abstract: Everyday articulations of music, place, urban politics, and inclusion/exclusion are powerfully present in Istanbul. This volume analyzes landscapes of music, community, and exclusion across a century and a half. An interdisciplinary group of scholars and artists presents four case studies: the rembetika, the music of the Asiks, the Zakir/Alevi tradition, and hip-hop, in Beyoglu, Üsküdar, the gentrifying Sulukule neighborhood, and across the metropolis. Alex Papadopoulos is Associate Professor of Geography at DePaul University, Chicago. He studies the contestation of urban space in European cities. Asli Duru is Marie Curie Fellow at The Open University, London, and studies everyday geographies of health and wellbeing.

    Abstract: Everyday articulations of music, place, urban politics, and inclusion/exclusion are powerfully present in Istanbul. This volume analyzes landscapes of music, community, and exclusion across a century and a half. An interdisciplinary group of scholars and artists presents four case studies: the rembetika, the music of the Asiks, the Zakir/Alevi tradition, and hip-hop, in Beyoglu, Üsküdar, the gentrifying Sulukule neighborhood, and across the metropolis. Alex Papadopoulos is Associate Professor of Geography at DePaul University, Chicago. He studies the contestation of urban space in European cities. Asli Duru is Marie Curie Fellow at The Open University, London, and studies everyday geographies of health and wellbeing.

Not only was pestilence a biological problem, but it was also read as a symptom of spiritual degeneracy and it caused widespread social disorder. This original musicological approach further reveals how composers responded, in their works, to the discourses and practices surrounding one of the greatest medical crises in the pre-modern age.     Abstract: The book describes the confusing, contradictory and individualized musicscape in Turkey around the turn of the twenty-first century, including its prehistory throughout the twentieth century and sometimes beyond. Its focus lies on the recent tendency towards a disintegration of musical traditions into internationalism and multiple musical hybrids which might be described as a process of individualization. The category of individual as used here includes individual musicians, individual music pieces, individual life experiences, identities and approaches to music, individual musical projects, individual CDs and concerts, even individual concepts of music theory, conferences or research projects. Several factors lead to this development: A growing rate and importance of migration and international mobility; the increase of cross-cultural encounters and experiences; the availability of almost all Ottoman-Turkish, Anatolian and global musical styles, instruments and other musical elements via media; the opening up of identity discourses. A final chapter is intended as a reflection on the question of how this unprecedented musical expansion could have happened within an authoritarian state and society such as the Republic of Turkey.

In Zeiten der Weimarer Republik etwa floss der Jazz unaufhaltsam in die deutsche Unterhaltungskultur ein und begeisterte Publikum und Künstler gleichermaßen, gleichzeitig repräsentierten die USA für konservative Kreise einen libertär-demokratischen Geist, dem eine ‚zersetzende‘ Wirkung auf die deutsche Gesellschaft unterstellt wurde. Die ambivalente Beziehung der Deutschen gegenüber den USA setzte sich nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg fort: Ob als ‚Befreier‘ und Verbündete oder als ‚imperialistischer Feindesstaat‘ – je nach politischer Gesinnung und kultureller Zugehörigkeit konnte man in den USA und ihrer Kultur die Verheißung schlechthin oder den ultimativen Dämon erkennen. Euphorie und Hysterie bildeten gewissermaßen den roten Faden in der Amerikarezeption der Deutschen.

    Abstract: Singing God's Words is the first in-depth study of the experience and meaning of chanting or "reading" Torah among contemporary American Jews. This experience has been transformed dramatically in recent years by the impact of digital technology, feminism, the empowerment of lay people and a search for self-fulfillment through involvement with community. At a time when worshippers seek deeper spiritual experience, many Jews have found new meaning in the experience of reading Torah, an act that is broadly accessible to Jewish adults even as it requires intensive immersion with the text of the Bible in Hebrew. This book examines why and how growing numbers of American Jews in all denominations see the public chanting of Biblical texts during the synagogue service as one of the most authentic and personal expressions of their religious identity. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with men and women, both professionals and congregants, Jeffrey A. Summit describes how the reading of Torah embodies their understanding of historical religious practice, even as it is shaped by contemporary views of spiritual experience. Through this act, holiness becomes manifest at the intersection of Biblical chant, sacred text, the individual, and the community. - Jeffrey A. Summit is Research Professor in the Department of Music and Judaic Studies at Tufts University, where he also serves as rabbi and Neubauer Executive Director of Tufts Hillel. He is the author of The Lord's Song in a Strange Land: Music and Identity in Contemporary Jewish Worship (OUP). His CD Abayudaya: Music from the Jewish People of Uganda was nominated for a Grammy Award.
