    Abstract: This book provides new and established researchers with innovative methodologies and research strategies to explore European security integration from a different perspective, challenging traditional theoretical interpretations. It takes a step back from well-established theoretical approaches to the European Union’s (EU) Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) to ask more fundamental questions about the core assumptions underpinning research on European security integration. It supports methodological innovations with an analysis of the most significant empirical problems of European security governance, including the war in Ukraine or the role of Russia in European security. In the last chapter, the author offers ideas for new pedagogical approaches to teaching European Studies. Kamil Zwolski is Associate Professor in International Politics at the University of Southampton, UK, and Jean Monnet Chair of European Security Governance. His research interests include the theory and practice of European security and its governance, Europe-Russia relations and the role of the EU/NATO in European security. His previous book, European Security in Integration Theory (2018), examines federalism and functionalism – two fundamentals, yet largely forgotten, theories of international integration, in the context of the war in Ukraine and contemporary European security order.

    Abstract: This volume examines some of the major challenges and opportunities for Europe in the light of the intensifying US-China global strategic rivalry.     Abstract: Over a million Kurdish-Yezidi refugees are dispersed across European cities and towns. However, they are neither recognized as a distinct community of stateless immigrants nor as a distinct European ethnic or religious minority. They are frequently utilized as data sources without having a voice to address their challenges. This oral testimony project, moving beyond, but contributing to, conventional academic research, provides these communities with a space to tackle multiple questions in their own languages and with their own voices. The book seeks to answer what drives their departures from their home countries, how they escape, what shapes their lives in receiving cities, and finally, how homeland affairs influence their lives in new environments. By addressing all these themes, this book presents refugee-centric knowledge by and with refugees as objects and subjects of their narratives and transcends neoliberal humanitarian, state-centric, and colonial hegemonic epistemes that limit refugees' epistemic capabilities and viewpoints. Veysi Dag is a research fellow of the Minerva Foundation at the Department of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also a research associate at SOAS, University of London. His research interests focus on studies of migration and diaspora, governance, social movements and transnationalism, comparative politics with a focus on refugee and migration policies in Europe, peacebuilding and conflict transformation, and regional policy analysis with a focus on Middle Eastern politics and the Kurdish-Turkish conflict.

It draws on an EU COST Action research network on Police Stops which engaged academics and practitioners from 29 countries to better understand the practice of police stops. It begins by examining how police stops are defined and the various legal rules and levels of accountability afforded. The chapters are arranged by theme to focus on a core aspect of the governance of police stops. These include: legal frameworks and police discretion; internal governance; external accountability and civilian oversight; possibilities for legal recourse; and the different roles of data and technology. Each compares the distinct approaches evident across Europe, often employing case studies. The book adopts a critical approach, acknowledging governance as contested and involving diverse (state, non-state and supranational) actors. It considers implications for policing in a rapidly changing environment globally. Elizabeth Aston is Professor of Criminology at Edinburgh Napier University, UK, and the Director of the Scottish Institute for Policing Research.     Abstract: Black communities have been making major contributions to Europe's social and cultural life and landscapes for centuries. However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory. For the first time in European history, leading Black scholars and activists examine this issue – with first-hand knowledge of the eight European capitals in which they live. Highlighting existing monuments, memorials, and urban markers they discuss collective narratives, outline community action, and introduce people and places relevant to Black European history, which continues to be obscured today.

    Abstract: This book examines similarities and differences in 31 European governments’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic hit Europe in early 2020. It spread across the continent during the Spring while anxious electorates were treated to news reports about health systems under duress and frustrated attempts by public procurement officials to obtain adequate supplies of medical and protective equipment. Over the next 15–18 months considered by this book, national responses exhibited both similarities and profound variations as the different endeavours to regulate social interactions constituted a stress test for political systems across Europe.     Abstract: Kulturelle Bildung kann maßgeblich die Persönlichkeitsentwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen unterstützen. Im Projekt InKuBi wurde ein Indikatorenset entwickelt, mit dem Entwicklungen in diesem Bereich analysiert werden können. Kinder und Jugendliche können sich durch kreatives Gestalten und die aktive Rezeption von Kunst und Kultur unabhängig von ihrem familiären, kulturellen, sozialen und ökonomischen Hintergrund mit der Welt auseinandersetzen. Schon lange fördert der Bund die kulturelle Bildung im Programm „Kultur macht stark". Bisher lagen aber keine belastbaren Daten zum Status quo und zu Entwicklungen im Rahmen des Programms vor. Um mehr Steuerungswissen zu generieren, wurde im Projekt InKuBi ein exemplarisches Indikatorenset entwickelt. Die Indikatoren orientieren sich an der Systematik des nationalen Bildungsberichts und legen den Grundstein für ein Monitoringsystem kultureller Bildung in Deutschland. Die Studie, die von der Stiftung Mercator gefördert wurde, zeigt die Entstehung und die Grundlagen des Indikatorensets sowie die Bedeutung einer datengestützten Gesamtschau für die kulturelle Bildung im Rahmen eines bundesweiten Bildungsmonitorings.

    Abstract: This book analyzes conflicting notions of identity and belonging in contemporary Europe. Addressing the creation, negotiation, and (re)use of diverse spaces and places of belonging, the book examines their fascinating complexities in the context of a changing Europe. Taking an innovative interdisciplinary approach, the volume examines renegotiations of belonging played out through cultural encounters with difference and change, in diverse public spaces and contested places.     Abstract: Die Covid-19-Pandemie fordert die europäische Idee heraus: Denn nicht nur die EU-Außengrenzen, sondern auch Binnengrenzen innerhalb des Schengen-Raums wurden ab Frühjahr 2020 wieder verstärkt kontrolliert, durch an deren Überquerung anknüpfende Quarantäne- und Test-Vorschriften zum Hindernis oder auch zeitweise ganz geschlossen. Damit sind die geographischen Grenzverläufe für Berufspendelnde, für Ausflügler:innen oder für Einkaufende wieder ,real‘.     Abstract: Why does an entire society believe that there are witches who must be burned? What roles did the emerging 'state', the professions of clerics and jurists, and the public involved play in each case? And how could this project be finished? From a sociological point of view, the findings of recent international research on witches provide a model of a more general, highly ambivalent, 'pastoral' attitude, according to which a shepherd has to care for the welfare of his flock as well as for its erring sheep. The first main part describes the clerical initial situation, which developed the 'Dominican' demonological model of witchcraft on the basis of the still dominant magico-religious mentality in the 15th century. A model, according to the second part of the book, which then in the course of the 16th century in Western Europe increasingly fell into the hands of the not so innocent jurists. From there it developed into a legal witch persecution that realized the early European witch model from the village witch to the mass persecutions to the late child witches. The third part describes how witch persecutions slowly became less important towards the end of the 17th century as a general witchcraft 'politics' game in the transition from a confessional state to a (court) 'civil service' state. The author Prof. Dr. Stephan Quensel is a lawyer and criminologist. Until his retirement in 2002, he was a professor in the Department of Resocialization and Rehabilitation in the Sociology program at the University of Bremen. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

    Abstract: This book discusses the emerging threats to European stability in different borderland regions, from the Greater Middle East to the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans and the Black Sea. It highlights the specific geopolitical risks that could, left unchecked, have global repercussions. The book shows how recent events have exasperated underlying problems that have been slowly destabilizing each of these regions for years.     Abstract: This book provides an entry point to the most cutting-edge lines of research on popular political mobilisation in Europe. It brings together leading scholars from Germany, France, Britain, the Netherlands and Spain. The chapters explore the connected dimensions of popular participation within different countries and across borders, covering the topics of iconoclasm, popular acclamations, street politics, associations, petitions and electoral agitation. Focusing on the role of disenfranchised citizens and women, this collection broadens the themes of traditional political historical research that has identified political participation with the right to vote and struggles for political inclusion, and brings a wide array of formal and informal political practices to the centre of nineteenth-century European life. A must-read for scholars, undergraduates, and graduate students wishing to explore multiple dimensions of the history of political engagement and politicisation. Diego Palacios Cerezales is a Senior Researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain. Previously, he was a Lecturer in European History at the University of Stirling, in the UK, and he has also held teaching and research positions at various Spanish and Portuguese universities. Diego’s research focuses on the transnational history of petitioning from the Age of Revolution to the third wave of democratisation (1789–1989), as well as on the history of policing in Spain and Portugal. In diesem Band wird argumentiert, dass es für das Verständnis der Bemühungen der EU um den Umgang mit der Vielfalt unter ihren Mitgliedern und Bürgern effektiver ist, die EU als Staat zu betrachten. Die Autoren räumen zwar ein, dass der EU wichtige Aspekte der Staatlichkeit fehlen, zeigen aber, dass die Betrachtung der Bemühungen der EU um ein Gleichgewicht zwischen Vielfalt und Einheit durch die Brille der Staatspolitik ein fruchtbarer Weg ist, um die Union zu verstehen. Anstatt die EU als etwas Unvergleichliches und Einzigartiges zu begreifen, das weder eine internationale Organisation noch ein Staat ist, wird in dem Buch argumentiert, dass die EU als ein Gemeinwesen verstanden werden kann, das viele Ansätze und Strategien mit komplexen und vielfältigen Staaten teilt. Die Bemühungen der EU um den Aufbau politischer Strukturen, die der Vielfalt Rechnung tragen, sind daher lehrreich für andere Staaten dieser Art. Die Erfahrungen der EU tragen dazu bei zu verstehen, wie Staaten und andere Gemeinwesen auf die Herausforderungen der Vielfalt reagieren können, einschließlich der Vielfalt der konstituierenden Einheiten oder der subnationalen Gruppen und Identitäten.     Abstract: Seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg galten Massenkommunikation und Propaganda als integrale Faktoren des politischen und militärischen Geschehens. Damit wuchs der Bedarf an systematischer Expertise und wissenschaftlicher Erforschung. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und im Kalten Krieg wurde die Planung, Beobachtung und Analyse von Propaganda zu einem wichtigen Feld strategischer Wissensproduktion. Im Wege einer dreiseitig verflochtenen Wahrnehmungs- und Beziehungsgeschichte untersucht Benno Nietzel, welche Rolle Kommunikationsexperten und Wissenschaftler in der Propaganda dreier Länder spielten: in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion. Verschiedene Akteursgruppen konkurrierten jeweils um Gehör, Einfluss und Zuständigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Propaganda. Aus ihren Erfolgen und ihrem Scheitern ergibt sich eine alternative Geschichte von Verwissenschaftlichungsprozessen und Expertentum im 20. Jahrhundert, die von Ungleichzeitigkeiten, Gegenläufigkeiten und Widersprüchen gekennzeichnet ist

    Abstract: This book, a follow-up publication to the 2016 volume Foreign Fighters under International Law and Beyond, zooms in on the responses that the international community and individual States are implementing in response to (prospective and actual) returning foreign fighters (FFs) and their families, focusing on returnees from Syria and Iraq to European countries. As States and international organisations are still ‘learning by doing’, the role of the academic community is to help steer the process by bridging the divide between international standards and their implementation at the national level and between security concerns and human rights law. Furthermore, the academic community can and should assist in identifying ways forward that are both effective, sustainable and international law-compliant. Those are, ultimately, the goals that the present volume seeks to pursue. The observations, recommendations and warnings included in this book will be useful in future debates on (returning) FFs, both in the academic world and in the world of policy makers and practitioners, as well as to the public at large. Francesca Capone is Associate Professor of International Law at the Istituto DIRPOLIS of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, Italy.     Abstract: This book brings together empirical and theoretical case-study research on art and heritage crime. Drawn from a diverse group of researchers and professionals, the work presented explores contemporary conceptualisations of art crime within broader contexts. In this volume, we see ‘art’ in its usual forms for art crime scholarship: in paintings and antiquities. However, we also see art in fossils and in violins, chairs and jewellery, holes in the ground and even in the institutions meant to protect any, or all, of the above. And where there is art, there is crime. Chapters in this volume, alternatively, zoom in on specific objects, on specific locations, and on specific institutions, considering how each interact with the various conceptions of crime that exist in those contexts. This volume challenges the boundaries of what we understand as “art and heritage crimes” and displays that both art, and criminality related to art, is creative and unpredictable.

    Abstract: This book deals with the economic impact of technological changes and the rise of passenger shipping on social relations on board and ashore in European shipping industries between c.1850 and 2000. The changes in motive power, communication techniques and positioning technologies and the rise of passenger shipping went together with the creation of new tasks and functions and the marginalization or disappearance of traditional jobs and skills. This book presents case-studies on changes in different maritime professions between the middle of the nineteenth century and the end of the twentieth century, covering the shipping industries of a variety of seafaring countries in Europe. The subjects include changes in maritime labour at large, changes in specific groups of deck, catering or engine room personnel, such as captains, cooks, catering personnel, engineers, or radio-operators. A number of chapters employ a prosopographical or micro-historical approach, while others apply a spatial perspective, analyze business records, materials from professional associations or distil information from large sets of quantitative data. This book will be of interest to academics and students of economic history, maritime and labour history. Karel Davids is Professor Emeritus of Economic and Social History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He has published and taught on economic and social history, maritime history, the history of technology and global history. Joost Schokkenbroek has been Executive Director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum since July 2017. Prior to this he was affiliated with The Kendall Whaling Museum in the USA (1988-1990) and Het Scheepvaartmuseum (The Dutch National Maritime Museum) in Amsterdam (1991-2017), where he worked as Chief Curator, in combination with a Professorship of Maritime History and Maritime Heritage at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. .

Across the chapters, contributors from different countries examine the data, press coverage, and provide professional observations on how policing, law enforcement, police powers and community relations were managed. They focus on how security and governmental actors often failed to align with the formal scripts that were specifically designed for crisis-management, resulting in the wavering application of professional discretion and coercive powers. Their different approaches were evident: in some regions police were less dominantly visible compared to other regions, where the police used a top-down visible and repressive stance vis-à-vis public alignment with COVID rules, including the imposition of lockdown and curfews. Some contributors draw on data from the COROPOL (Corona Policing) Monitor which collated data on crime, plural policing and public order in Europe and around the world during the early phases of the COVID crisis. Overall, this book seeks to provide comparative critical insights and commentary as well as a practical and operational understanding of security governance during the COVID-19 crisis and the lessons learned to improve future preparedness. Monica den Boer is Professor of Military Policing Operations at the Netherlands Defence Academy. Her primary research focus is on the evolution of military policing, as well as border policing, international policing, urban policing and the policing of organised crime and terrorism. She served as member of the Dutch national parliament from 2017 to 2020. Prior to this she worked in several academic and professional environments, including the Police Academy of the Netherlands and the VU University Amsterdam. Eric Bervoets is a police scientist and criminologist. He has been active as a researcher since 1997. After a master's degree in public administration at Rotterdam Erasmus University, the Netherlands, Bervoets obtained his PhD in 2006 with a dissertation on policing troubled neighbourhoods. In 2020, he was appointed Research Fellow at the Netherlands Defence Academy. Linda Hak obtained her BSc in Criminology at Erasmus University and a master’s degree in Legal Psychology at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. She served as a research intern at Bureau Bervoets and is employed as a detective assistant for the National Police of the Netherlands.

    Abstract: As we face new global challenges - from climate change to the international political order - the need to re-examine the historical roots of cosmopolitanism and liberal principles on a global scale has become increasingly central to the political conversation. Cosmopolitanism and the Enlightenment brings together leading scholars in cultural history, the history of ideas and global politics in order to reassess the complexity of cosmopolitanism during the Enlightenment and its various interpretations over time. Through a fresh and revisionist perspective, the volume explores issues of universalism and cultural diversity, the idea of civilization, race, gender, empire, colonialism, global inequality, national patriotism, international and civil conflict, and other forms of political discourse, challenging the simple negative stereotype that the Enlightenment was inevitably hierarchical and Eurocentric. This timely intervention into the debate about the legacy of the Enlightenment highlights both the plurality and the continuing relevance of Enlightened cosmopolitanism to contemporary global concerns.

Through analysis of a range of discourses, it focuses on the roles played by intellectuals in formulating, communicating, and contesting ideas about work and its ethical value. The book moves away from the idea of a singular Weberian work ethic as fundamental to modern notions of work and instead emphasises how different languages of work were harnessed for a variety of social, intellectual, religious, economic, political, and ideological objectives. Rather than a singular work ethic that left a decisive mark on the development of Western culture and economy, the volume stresses plurality. The essays draw on approaches from intellectual, social, and cultural history. They explore how, why, and in what contexts labour became an important and openly promoted value; who promoted or opposed hard work and for what reasons; and whether there was an early modern break with ancient and medieval discourses on work. These historicized visions of work ethics help enrich our understanding of present-day changing attitudes to work.     Abstract: Depuis plusieurs décennies, le rapport à la mort et aux morts connaît une véritable mutation dans la société occidentale. Transformations des rites funéraires, notamment sous l’effet de la déchristianisation de l’Occident, diffusion d’un pluralisme religieux, pratiques individuelles en sont les traits les plus marquants. Mais c’est davantage l’acte de mourir, voire la définition même de la mort, qui semblent aujourd’hui changer radicalement. Cette mutation, profonde, n’est pourtant pas un fait nouveau. Elle n’est que le prolongement d’une autre transformation, plus ancienne, qui a touché l’ensemble du monde occidental dès le XVIIIe siècle, où l’on a commencé à déplacer et éloigner les sépultures à la périphérie des villes. La « transition » – si ce n’est la rupture – qui s’est alors produite en seulement quelques générations est venue bouleverser un régime funéraire qui s’était imposé depuis la fin de l’Antiquité, articulant des espaces destinés aux morts aux lieux sacrés, et faisant cohabiter les vivants et les défunts. Cet ouvrage vient analyser la manière dont s’est mis en place cet effacement progressif à travers les siècles, en tentant de dresser une histoire longue des rapports entre les vivants et les morts.

    Abstract: "Europeanisation of the Contemporary Far Right explores the role of transnational European identity in far-right mobilisation strategies. Focusing on the national members of two trans-European far-right coalitions - Generation Identity and Fortress Europe - the author explores the extent to which European far-right extra-parliamentary actors Europeanise their mobilisation. Drawing on social movement literature, the book argues that national extra-parliamentary actors' Europeanisation processes are influenced by their political and discursive opportunities and resources. Focusing on the groups' mobilisation during the 'refugee crisis' (2015-2017), the analysis considers the groups' frames, collective action, and coalition-building in the period, finding that the depth of the groups' resources particularly affects their capacity to mobilise. This book will be of interest to scholars, students, and civil society actors in fields related to the far right, European studies, social movements, and migration"--

    Abstract: Im Gegensatz zur Kunst gilt Kitsch als profan und wenig reflexiv. Doch ist diese Entgegensetzungen nicht zu einfach gedacht? Könnte es nicht zahlreiche Zwischenstufen der Reflexivität geben? Thomas Küpper geht diesen Fragen nach und diskutiert verschiedene Positionen dazu aus Literatur, Philosophie, Film und Fernsehen, von Walter Benjamin bis André Rieu. Dabei zeigt er auf, dass Kitsch bestimmte Formen von Reflexivität braucht, um dem Publikum heile Welten, große Gefühle und kleine Fluchten bieten zu können: Wie beim Fiktionspakt im Sinne von Samuel Coleridge geht das Publikum einen Pakt mit dem Kitsch ein.

Es handelt sich dabei um eine Filminstallation von Isaac Julien sowie eine Fotografie und eine multimediale Rauminstallation von Tanja Ostojić. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass die Art und Weise, wie Flucht- und Migrationsbewegungen auf den und innerhalb des europäischen Kontinents repräsentiert werden, nicht zuletzt auch davon abhängt, wie letzterer – verstanden als räumliches und identitäres Konzept – imaginiert wird. Daher liegt ein Schwerpunkt in der Analyse der künstlerischen Arbeiten auf den Repräsentationen Europas. Theoretischer Bezugspunkt hierfür sind postkoloniale und kritische Europastudien. Darüber hinaus spielt Weiblichkeit eine wichtige Rolle in der Formierung spezifischer (Vorstellungs-)Bilder von Flucht und Migration einerseits, Europa andererseits und schließlich ihres Verhältnisses zueinander. Sie stellt daher den zweiten Schwerpunkt in der Analyse dar, die auf Beiträge in der feministischen Forschung zur Formierung von (nationalen) Gemeinschaften Bezug nimmt.
    Abstract: The dissertation examines three artistic works dealing with migration to and within Europe. The works examined are a film installation by Isaac Julien as well as a photograph and a multimedia installation by Tanja Ostojić. It is assumed that the way in which migration is represented on and within the European continent depends not least on how the latter - understood as a spatial and identitary concept - is imagined. Therefore, the analysis of the artistic works focuses on the representation of Europe. Theoretical reference points for this are postcolonial and critical European studies. Furthermore, femininity plays an important role in the formation of specific (imagined) images of migration on the one hand, of Europe on the other, and finally their relationship to one another. It therefore constitutes the second focus of the analysis, which makes reference to contributions in feminist research on the formation of (national) communities.
