    Abstract: A timely exploration of intellectual dogmatism in politics, economics, religion, and literature-and what can be done to fight itPolarization may be pushing democracy to the breaking point. But few have explored the larger, interconnected forces that have set the stage for this crisis: namely, a rise in styles of thought, across a range of fields, that literary scholar Gary Saul Morson and economist Morton Schapiro call "fundamentalist." In Minds Wide Shut, Morson and Schapiro examine how rigid adherence to ideological thinking has altered politics, economics, religion, and literature in ways that are mutually reinforcing and antithetical to the open-mindedness and readiness to compromise that animate democracy. In response, they propose alternatives that would again make serious dialogue possible.Fundamentalist thinking, Morson and Schapiro argue, is not limited to any one camp. It flourishes across the political spectrum, giving rise to dueling monologues of shouting and abuse between those who are certain that they can't be wrong, that truth and justice are all on their side, and that there is nothing to learn from their opponents, who must be evil or deluded. But things don't have to be this way. Drawing on thinkers and writers from across the humanities and social sciences, Morson and Schapiro show how we might begin to return to meaningful dialogue through case-based reasoning, objective analyses, lessons drawn from literature, and more.The result is a powerful invitation to leave behind simplification, rigidity, and extremism-and to move toward a future of greater open-mindedness, moderation, and, perhaps, even wisdom.

    Abstract: The unanticipated and unsolicited Russian aggression in the Ukraine in February 2022 highlighted the urgency of updating general assumptions about post-communist countries. The war has revealed the inadequacy of the terms and concepts employed for western democracies for describing, understanding, and predicting the developments in the “hybrid” regimes of Eastern Europe and the former USSR. Magyar and Madlovics strongly argue for a vocabulary and grammar tailored to the specifics of the post-communist bloc. In this concise companion to the 800-page The Anatomy of Post-Communist Regimes (CEU Press, 2020), they develop a conceptual framework in 120 propositions with (1) a typology of post-communist regimes and (2) a detailed presentation of ideal-type actors and the political, economic, and social phenomena in these regimes. Each of the 120 propositions contains a statement and a succinct discussion supported by illustrative tables, figures, and QR-codes that connect the interested reader to the more detailed analysis in the Anatomy. In a condensed form, the holistic approach of the Anatomy is retained by treating political, market, and communal spheres as parts of a single, coherent whole. An analysis of twelve countries illustrates the concrete application of the method.

    Abstract: This book explores the Arctic as a rapidly evolving phenomenon in international affairs of a rising number of stakeholders. For decades, Arctic studies used to be an affair of a relatively narrow group of experts from northern countries. This time is over due to a new Chinese Arctic policy, as well as growing regional interests from South Korea, Singapore, India and Japan. Contributors reflect on new roles for the Arctic region: both as a playground for the old school nation state competition and even confrontation, and a new source for international cooperation in energy, logistics and natural sciences. Climate change, political tensions and economic competition make Arctic a hotter venue of international relations. This new Arctic fever, studied through a comparative analysis of different regional agendas, especially with a focus on the US–China–Russia triangle, represents the main subject of our book, which will be of interest to scholars of geopolitics, of climate change, and of 21st century energy economics. Anastasia Likhacheva works as a Dean at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at the Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow, Russia. Her key area of expertise includes geo-economics with a particular focus on sanctions, Eurasian integration and Russian foreign policy in Greater Eurasia. She regularly prepares policy briefs for senior Russian public authorities and has been a member of expert working groups of the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East since 2014. She also co-leads the ThinkArctic Project within the Program of Russian Chairmanship in the Arctic Councli 2021-2023.

Focusing on Central Europe, the post-Soviet countries and China, the study provides concepts and theories to analyze the actors, institutions, and dynamics of post-communist democracies, autocracies, and dictatorships. The work explores the structural foundations of post-communist regime development; the types of state, with an emphasis on informality and patronalism; the types of actors in the political, economic, and communal spheres; the ways autocrats neutralize the institutions of public deliberation (media, elections, etc.); the color revolutions of civil resistance (as in Georgia and in Ukraine) and the defensive mechanisms of democracy and autocracy; the evolution of corruption and the workings of "relational economy"; an analysis of China as "market-exploiting dictatorship"; the sociology of "clientage society"; the instrumental use of ideology, with an emphasis on populism; and a six-regime framework for modeling regime trajectories. Written in textbook style, the book is suitable for both beginners who wish to understand the logic of post-communism and scholars who are interested in original contributions to comparative regime theory.     Abstract: In diesem Buch sind sieben Essays und Vorträge des weltweit beachteten kenianischen Autors (Jahrgang 1938) aus der Zeit vor 2009 über Dekolonisierung in Afrika versammelt, denen "der Ruf nach einer visionären, geeinten afrikanischen Führung zugrunde" liegt. Seit über sechzig Jahren schreibt Ngugi wa Thiong?o, der 2019 mit dem renommierten Erich-Maria-Remarque-Friedenspreis geehrt wurde, über die Geschichten, Herausforderungen und Zukunftssaussichten Afrikas, insbesondere seines Heimatlandes Kenia. Rezension (ekz): Der kenianische Autor (Jahrgang 1938) ist mit seinen Lebenserinnerungen "Träume in Zeiten des Krieges" (2010) und "Im Haus des Hüters" (2013) bei uns bekannt geworden und (war?) für den Literatur-Nobelpreis im Gespräch. In diesem Buch sind sieben Essays und Vorträge aus der Zeit vor 2009 versammelt, die grundsätzliche Themen behandeln wie die Verschleierungsfunktion des Wortes "Stamm", die Geschichte und gegenwärtige Bedeutung von Sklaverei, die afrikanischen Intellektuellen und ihr Verhältnis zur Sprachenvielfalt, zur Globalisierung und zu Massenvernichtungswaffen. Den Essays liegt "der Ruf nach einer visionären, geeinten afrikanischen Führung zugrunde", was nicht bedeutet, dass die Tatsache von 50 durchaus unterschiedlichen afrikanischen Staaten und die vielfach noch bestehenden Diktaturen übergangen würden. - Das Buch mag als Hintergrundmaterial für die innerafrikanische Kritik an der Art der Dekolonisation und auch an der westlichen "Entwicklungshilfe" genutzt werden und wäre dann eine gute Ergänzung zur westlichen Kritik etwa bei V. Seitz in "Afrika wird armregiert" (2018). (2)

    Abstract: Wie steht es um die politische Gleichheit in Gesellschaften, in denen Einkommen immer weiter auseinanderdriften und die Armen sich kaum noch politisch beteiligen? Mit einer umfassenden empirischen Untersuchung politischer Repräsentation in Deutschland zeigt die Autorin, dass die Entscheidungen des Deutschen Bundestages seit den 1980er-Jahren systematisch zugunsten oberer Berufs- und Einkommensgruppen verzerrt sind. In der Folge wird nicht nur das Gleichheitsversprechen der Demokratie verletzt, sondern es werden auch vermehrt Entscheidungen getroffen, die ökonomische Ungleichheit tendenziell verschärfen.

    Abstract: The Egyptian army decided to intervene and take down existing regimes three times in the post-colonial state: once in 1952, and again more recently in 2011 and 2013. In old and new cases of intervention, the military institution deployed the same nationalist rhetoric about its duty as the "guardian" of the nation and the protector of national security and unity. However, the new army of the last three years is not the same institution that existed sixty years ago. This book argues that a new military institution was born in Egypt in the 1980s, after the country fought its last war with its traditional enemy and signed a peace treaty. It is an army of "neo-liberal officers," who run vast business enterprises, enjoy financial autonomy beyond public scrutiny, and intervene in politics with heavy leverage for reasons different than those of the old army--albeit by using the same nationalist rhetoric. Under such militarism, the country's existing economic crisis is growing acutely worse. The Egyptian pound has been drastically devalued, prices of basic goods have skyrocketed, unemployment rates have further increased, and foreign investors have not arrived to the country yet. As Abul-Magd explores the deep historical roots of the country's current fragile state, she also offers proscriptions for demilitarizing the nation, including divesting the Egyptian military of its business enterprises by curbing the financial support it receives from Arab Gulf states and other powers

    Abstract: "Some 250,000 people died in the southern Somalia famine of 2011-12, which also displaced and destroyed the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands more. Yet this crisis had been predicted nearly a year earlier. The harshest drought in Somalia's recent history coincided with a global spike in food prices, hitting this arid, import-dependent country hard. The policies of Al-Shabaab, a militant Islamist group that controlled southern Somalia, exacerbated an already difficult situation, barring most humanitarian assistance, while the government's counter-terrorism policies criminalized any aid falling into their hands. A major disaster resulted from the production and market failures precipitated by the drought and food price crisis, while the famine itself was the result of the failure to quickly respond to these events - and was thus largely human-made. This book analyses the famine: the trade-offs between competing policy priorities that led to it, the collective failure in response, and how those affected by it attempted to protect themselves and their livelihoods. It also examines the humanitarian response, including actors that had not previously been particularly visible in Somalia - from Turkey, the Middle East, and Islamic charities worldwide

    Abstract: Der Autor verfolgt das Ziel, das Perspektiventableau für die Lernprozesse in der politischen Bildung zu erweitern. Das Buch stellt heraus, inwieweit politikwissenschaftliche Gegenstände auch unter ökonomischen Aspekten analysiert und beurteilt werden können. Anhand der gegebenen Verschränkungen von Politik und Wirtschaft und mittels ausgewählter wirtschaftsdidaktischer Forschungsfelder wird die politikdidaktische Verwertbarkeit ökonomischer Aspekte untersetzt. Eine Debatte um den homo oeconomicus sowie eine Diskussion zum Anliegen des Beutelsbacher Konsenses runden diese Untersuchungen ab. Auf theoretisch konzeptioneller Basis und mit Bezug auf Unterrichtsbeispiele wird gezeigt, dass vor allem die Neue Politische Ökonomie und die Neue Institutionenökonomik eine „Gelenkstelle par excellence“ zwischen politischer und ökonomischer Bildung verkörpern.     Abstract: "When South Africa finally held its first democratic elections in 1994, the country had a much higher poverty rate than in other countries at a similar level of development. This was the legacy of apartheid. Twenty years later, poverty was still widespread. Seekings and Nattrass explain why poverty has persisted in South Africa since 1994. They demonstrate who has and who has not remained poor, how public policies both mitigated and reproduced poverty, and how and why these policies were adopted. Their analysis of the South African welfare state, labour market policies and the growth path of the South African economy challenge conventional accounts that focus only on 'neoliberalism'. They argue, instead, that policies were, in important respects, social democratic. They show how social democratic policies both mitigate and reproduce poverty in contexts such as South Africa, reflecting the contradictory nature of social democracy in the global South"..
