Damit reagiert es auf die negative soziale Dynamik mit optimistischen Antworten und hat zum Ziel, den sozialen Zusammenhalt vor Ort zu stärken - eine Aufgabe, die gerade die post-pandemische Gesellschaft herausfordern wird.

    Abstract: This volume analyzes the development of the reactions to Covid-19 by governments, the public and the crime patterns in 16 European countries. All countries are members of the European Union and share common European norms and values, but the Covid-19 pandemic can serve as an example of how these norms and values are interpreted differently with regard to people’s trust in public institutions, governmental control strategies, dealing with fear, anxiety and other emotional responses to the new virus, crime patterns and law enforcement priorities to prevent and combat them. The volume provides empirical data based on available statistics, media analysis and qualitative data from interviews and observations, and examines the similarities and differences in crime patterns and the consequences for local communities and law enforcement priorities. .

    Abstract: Angesichts moderner Medizintechnik verfassen immer mehr Menschen in Deutschland eine Patientenverfügung, damit sie im Zweifelsfall sterben dürfen. Allerdings ist die Patientenverfügung weit weniger Ausdruck eines autonomen Patientenwillens, als sie scheint. Dieser Band zeichnet basierend auf zahlreichen Gesprächen aus kulturanthropologischer Perspektive die Entstehungsgeschichten einzelner Patientenverfügungen nach. Dabei werden hintergründige Wirkmechanismen offengelegt, vor denen sich Individuen in einem komplexen Gefüge aus Interaktionen, Wissenshierarchien und gesellschaftlichen Verhaltensnormen als präventiv handelnde Akteure konstituieren.     Abstract: Die britische Mathematikenthusiastin ("Mathematik der Liebe"), Professorin in London, schreibt über das Wirken von Algorithmen in den Daseinsdimensionen "Macht, Daten, Justiz, Medizin, Autos, Kriminalität, Kunst." Die Algorithmen entscheiden für uns oder bereiten Entscheidungen vor, doch sie sind indiskret, fehlerbehaftet (wie menschliches Handeln), ungerecht und gaukeln eine Sicherheit vor, die sie nur bedingt geben können. Die Autorin referiert die z.T. bekannten Beispiele. Vieles grenze, vor allem in der sogenannten KI, die sie lieber eine erweiterte Computerstatistik nennen wolle, an "Zauberei", vor allem dann, wenn nicht mehr erklärt werden könne, wie die Ergebnisse zustande kämen. Die Kernfrage bleibe also, wie sehr wir den Algorithmen trauen und sie als Autorität in unserem/über unser Leben anerkennen. Man muss nicht zum Cyborg werden, aber ein vernünftiges und rationales Miteinander von menschlichen und algorithmisierten Verfahren sei ein anstrebenswertes Ziel. Sehr gut zu lesen, gut neben z.B. K.     Abstract: "This book describes the most important kinds of texts in English and introduces the methodological techniques used to analyze them. Three analytical approaches are introduced and compared, describing a wide range of texts from the perspectives of register, genre, and style. The primary focus of the book is on the analysis of registers. Part 1 introduces an analytical framework for studying registers, genre conventions, and styles. Part 2 provides detailed descriptions of particular text varieties in English, including spoken interpersonal varieties (conversation, university office hours, service encounters), written varieties (newspapers, academic prose, fiction), and emerging electronic varieties (e-mail, internet forums, text messages). Finally, Part 3 introduces advanced analytical approaches using corpora, and discusses theoretical concerns, such as the place of register studies in linguistics, and practical applications of register analysis.     Abstract: Amok: Erfurt, Emsdetten, Winnenden, Lörrach ... Nach einem Amoklauf ist in den Medien schnell von einer 'unfassbaren Tat' die Rede, eine geradezu ritualisierte Berichterstattung setzt ein. Sie ist, so der Soziologe Jörn Ahrens, eine Reaktion auf den Kontrollverlust, den ein Amoklauf für eine Gesellschaft bedeutet. Tatsächlich muss man sogar von einem doppelten Kontrollverlust sprechen: aufseiten der Gesellschaft und aufseiten des Täters. Denn es bedarf immer einer Gelegenheit zur Gewalttat und der Bereitschaft zu ihr. Dieses Buch untersucht, wie Gesellschaften auf Taten reagieren, bei denen exzeptionelle Gewalt angewendet wird, die prominent im öffentlichen Raum verübt werden und das gesellschaftlich akzeptierte Ausmaß an Regelverletzungen überschreiten. Es zeigt außerdem, wie das Vertrauen in die Sicherheit der Lebenswelt wiederhergestellt wird. Der Autor geht diesen Aspekten anhand der öffentlichen Reaktionen auf vier Amokläufe in Deutschland nach - und entwirft zugleich eine Soziologie der Gewalt. Jörn Ahrens ist Professor für Kultursoziologie an der Universität Gießen. The English past has featured many representations of declining community, expressed by those who lamented its loss in quite different periods and in diverse genres. This book analyses how community spirit and the passing of community have been described in the past...whether for good or ill...with an eye to modern issues, such as the so-called 'loneliness epidemic' or the social consequences of alternative structures of community. It does this through examination of authors such as Thomas Hardy, James Wentworth Day, Adrian Bell and H.E. Bates, by appraising detective fiction writers, analysing parish magazines, considering the letter writing of the parish poor in the 18th and 19th centuries, and through the depictions of realist landscape painters such as George Morland. K.D.M. Snell addresses modern social concerns, showing how many current preoccupations had earlier precedents. In presenting past representations of declining communities, and the way these affected individuals of very different political persuasions, the book draws out lessons and examples from the past about what community has meant hitherto, setting into context modern predicaments and judgements about 'spirits of community' today"...

    Abstract: Mai Sato examines public attitudes to the death penalty in Japan, focusing on knowledge and attitudinal factors relating to support for, and opposition to, the death penalty. She uses a mixed-method approach and mounts quantitative and qualitative surveys to assess Japanese death penalty attitudes. The author’s main findings show that death penalty attitudes are not fixed but fluid. Information has a significant impact on reducing support for the death penalty while retributive attitudes are associated with support. This book offers a new conceptual framework in understanding the death penalty without relying on the usual human rights approach, which can be widely applied not just to Japan but to other retentionist countries.     Abstract: "One of the most vexing problems in the theory and practice of politics is the issue of difference. How do we build a just and stable polity in the face of identity differences that have historically been the basis for inequality, injustice, and violence? Such differences can take a variety of forms, including religious difference, race and ethnicity, language difference, urban/rural tensions, and gender. In many countries, divisions such as these are the fault lines that threaten the stability of the social and legal order. This book addresses the role of constitutions and constitutionalism in dealing with the challenge of difference. In the spring of 2011, a conference held at Indiana University brought together a distinguished group of lawyers, political scientists, historians, religious studies scholars, and area studies experts to consider how constitutions and constitutionalism address issues of difference across a wide swath of the world we called "Pan-Asia." Pan-Asia runs from the Middle East, through Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and into Oceania. This is a meta-region across which ideas and influences have traveled for centuries. It is also an area of the world that includes every type of difference in abundant supply. Pan-Asia, therefore, provides a wonderful laboratory for examining the role of constitutions in addressing difference. The existing literatures, while rich in other ways, do not speak directly to this issue of constitutions as a mechanism for addressing difference.     Abstract: "This book describes the most important kinds of texts in English and introduces the methodological techniques used to analyze them. Three analytical approaches are introduced and compared, describing a wide range of texts from the perspectives of register, genre, and style. The primary focus of the book is on the analysis of registers. Part 1 introduces an analytical framework for studying registers, genre conventions, and styles. Part 2 provides detailed descriptions of particular text varieties in English, including spoken interpersonal varieties (conversation, university office hours, service encounters), written varieties (newspapers, academic prose, fiction), and emerging electronic varieties (e-mail, internet forums, text messages). Finally, Part 3 introduces advanced analytical approaches using corpora, and discusses theoretical concerns, such as the place of register studies in linguistics, and practical applications of register analysis.     Abstract: Geburt, Hochzeit und Tod - schon immer zählten diese biographischen Übergänge und die mit ihnen einhergehenden Rituale zu den zentralen Wendepunkten im Leben, da sie meist wesentliche rechtliche wie soziale Veränderungen mit sich brachten. Konkreten Ausdruck fand ihr herausragender Stellenwert oftmals in kostspieligen Festen. Seit dem Spätmittelalter wurden Letztere den städtischen Obrigkeiten zunehmend ein Dorn im Auge, so dass sie mit speziellen Gesetzen gegen den als unmäßig und unangemessen aufgefassten Prachtaufwand vorgingen. Diese sogenannten 'Hochzeits-, Tauf- und Begräbnisverordnungen' werden im vorliegenden Buch am Beispiel der Städte Frankfurt am Main und Augsburg in all ihrer Bandbreite untersucht und verglichen. Neben den Gesetzesinhalten stehen hierbei insbesondere die Implementierung der Normen sowie deren Bewertung und Umsetzung durch die Bevölkerung im Fokus.
