    Abstract: Dieser Open-Access-Sammelband hinterfragt, wie sich internationale Kulturzusammenarbeit zwischen Ländern unterschiedlicher Kultursysteme und -traditionen erreichen lässt. In Deutschland ist Auswärtige Kulturpolitik von dem Gedanken geleitet, dass globale Herausforderungen Multilateralismus erfordern. Im chinesischen Diskurs dagegen finden andere Kernbegriffe wie z.B. „Tianxia“ Verwendung, die im nicht-chinesischen Kontext einer Interpretation bedürfen. Um der Differenz – aber auch den Gemeinsamkeiten – auf den Grund zu gehen, untersuchen Wissenschaftler*innen und Praktiker*innen aus China und Deutschland Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmungen sowie Kooperationen in kulturellen Begegnungen. Auf diese Weise sollen Grundlagen für ein besseres gegenseitiges Verständnis sowie für kulturelle Kooperation zwischen beiden Ländern ermöglicht werden. Die Herausgeber*innen Prof. Dr. Chunchun Hu leitet den Masterstudiengang Europa-Studien an der Shanghai Academy of Global Governance and Area Studies, Shanghai International Studies University. Dr. Odila Triebel leitet den Bereich Dialog und Forschung „Kultur und Außenpolitik“ am ifa, Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen.     Abstract: History has always dealt with people, yet often gazing at the people from the perspectives of the non-people - colonizers, intruders, outsiders and the privileged elite insiders - who seem to have internalized the 'mainstream' perspective framed by the outsiders. In this context a group of scholars working on Darjeeling felt that there was a need for an inclusive people's history of the Darjeeling hills.The present volume tries to fill this gap of the missing voices of the people of the Darjeeling hills and their cultures through re-writing inclusive history of society and culture from 'below', not only by de coding the elements that are treated as tradition, but also the trans formations in the realms of arts and ecology. For, the tribal-scape of the Darjeeling hills is not a static/frozen zone and the people (hence, the geo-space) are in continuous transition from traditional beings towards becoming neo-traditional. Accepting history as constantly 'extra mural' the objectives of the book are to focus on un documented histories related to harmony, intimacy, belongingness and environ mental care and thereby, interact the living with what is often projected as 'dead', by rejecting to abide by any given set of references as the final/'scientific'/authentic and, thereby, opening up with other kinds of historical dialogue with the understated historical items that are accessible in Darjeeling.Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the print version of this book in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

    Abstract: Die Autorinnen und Autoren des vorliegenden Sammelbandes untersuchen Umbrüche, Krisen und Widerstände in der Geschichte sowie der Gegenwart der Türkei. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie gesellschaftlicher und politischer Wandel in Kunst und Literatur verhandelt wird, welchen Einfluss er auf transnationale Migrationsbewegungen hat, wie er den urbanen Raum verändert und welche Rolle akademische Freiheit dabei spielt. Alleine drei Militärputsche formten die Geschichte des Landes in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die anschließend einsetzende neoliberale Agenda der 1980er Jahre hatte nicht nur wirtschaftliche, sondern weitreichende soziale und kulturelle Folgen. Der Band verfolgt einen interdisziplinären und epochenübergreifenden Ansatz, der einerseits Wechselwirkungen zwischen Kultur und Politik untersucht und andererseits gesellschaftliche Strukturen in ihrer historischen Veränderlichkeit beleuchtet.     Abstract: "The conception of modernity as a moment of severance from a primitive past runs parallel to the conception of Europe as the 'locus of history.' The essays in this volume contest the temporal and spatial divisions--between Europe and the rest of the world; modernity and tradition; and between European rationality and Asia's excesses--which the conventional narrative of modernity creates. Drawing from Chinese and Indian culture and history instead, the authors of the book explore the Eurocentric ideas of modernity to see it in a transcultural and pluralistic light. The volume proposes an understanding of modernity not as a moment of rupture from the past but as a process of continuity and renewal. By studying the Bhakti movement, Confucian democracy, and the maritime and agrarian economies of China and India, this book showcases the dynamism in these cultures. These in turn challenge stereotypes which portray Asia as a 'moribund continent' characterized by 'Orientalist despotism' and stagnation. By exploring these on a theoretical plane, the authors expand and enlarge the terms of debate and revisit devalued terms and concepts like tradition, religion, authority, rural and provincial as resources for modernity.     Abstract: During Israel's military operation in Gaza in the summer of 2014 the commanding officer of the Givati infantry brigade, Col. Ofer Vinter, called on his troops to fight "the terrorists who defame the God of Israel". This unprecedented call for religious war by a senior IDF commander caused an uproar, but it was just one symptom of a profound process of religionization, or de-secularization, that Israeli society has been going through since the turn of the twenty-first century. This book analyses and explains the reasons for the religionization of Israeli society, a process known in Hebrew as hadata. It argues that this process had its origins in the 1967 war, has been accelerating since 2000, and is manifested in a number of key social fields. It further argues that Jewish religion, inseparable from Jewish nationality, was embedded in Zionism from its inception at the end of the 19th Century but was subdued to a certain extent in favour of the national aspect in the interest of building a modern nation-state. In addition to discussing religionization in the military, the educational system, and the media of mass communications, the book includes a major chapter on the religionization of the Israeli visual fine arts field, a topic that has not been researched before now. Through careful examination of religionization, this book sheds light on a major development in Israeli society, which will additionally inform our understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As such, it is a key resource for students and scholars of Israel Studies, and those interested the relations between religion, politics and nationalism, secularization and new social movements

    Abstract: As contemporary socio-ecological challenges such as climate change and biodiversity preservation have become more important, the three pillars concept has increasingly been used in planning and policy circles as a framework for analysis and action. However, the issue of how culture influences sustainability is still an underexplored theme. Understanding how culture can act as a resource to promote sustainability, rather than a barrier, is the key to the development of cultural sustainability. This book explores the interfaces between nature and culture through the perspective of cultural sustainability. A cultural perspective on environmental sustainability enables a renewal of sustainability discourse and practices across rural and urban landscapes, natural and cultural systems, stressing heterogeneity and complexity. The book focuses on the nature-culture interface conceptualised as a place where experiences, practices, policies, ideas and knowledge meet, are negotiated, discussed and resolved. Rather than looking for lost unities, or an imaginary view of harmonious relationships between humans and nature based in the past, it explores cases of interfaces that are context-sensitive and which consciously convey the problems of scale and time. While calling attention to a cultural or 'culturalised' view of the sustainability debate, this book questions the radical nature-culture dualism dominating positive modern thinking as well as its underlying view of nature as pre-given and independent from human life.

    Abstract: "After decades of mismanagement and direct military rule, Myanmar's contested transition to a more democratic government has rapidly shifted the outlook in this significant Southeast Asian nation. Since 2011, the removal of Western sanctions and new foreign investments have resulted in high rates of economic growth and an expanding middle class, albeit from a very low base. In a result unthinkable a few years earlier, former political prisoner and Nobel laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, and her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), formed a national government in early 2016. However, despite significant political and economic reforms since the liberalisation process commenced, the transition to civilian rule remains constrained by the military's 2008 Constitution, which guarantees that it operates unfettered by civilian oversight. As a result, although some ethnic conflicts have abated, others continue to fester while new conflicts have erupted. With a daunting task ahead the NLD government has made some progress in removing the vestiges of repressive military-era laws but many remain untouched and some of the practices of the new government provide unwelcome reminders of its authoritarian history. This timely Handbook describes the political, economic, cultural and strategic dimensions of this crucial period of transition in Myanmar life. It presents explanations for contradictory trends, including those that defy some of the early narratives about the comprehensive transformation of Myanmar life.     Abstract: Der Band enthält die Beiträge einer Tagung zum Verhältnis von Humor und Religiosität in der Moderne. Zwischen einer humorvollen Sichtweise auf die Welt, die dieser trotz Widrigkeiten eine heitere Seite abgewinnen kann, und der religiösen Vermittlung von Transzendenz und Immanenz lassen sich diverse Verbindungen erkennen. Unter diesem Aspekt werden hier kanonische und vernachlässigte Humor-Theorien und humoristische Kunstwerke betrachtet - von Jean Paul, Hegel und E.T.A Hoffmann, über Kierkegaard, Moritz Lazarus und Freud, bis zur Bewährungsprobe humoristischer Verfahrensweisen unter der Herrschaft des Nationalsozialismus. Die kontroverse Idealisierung der Realität durch Humor erscheint auf diese Weise auch als eine Ausformung der umfassenderen Fragestellung, wie Religiosität unter den Bedingungen der Moderne redlich zum Ausdruck gebracht werden kann, angesichts der Entfremdung von und Kritik an institutionalisierter Religion.     Abstract: Das Ideal des ehrbaren Kaufmanns hat eine lange Tradition. In Europa wurden Tugenden wie Ehrlichkeit und Verlässlichkeit seit dem Mittelalter in Handbüchern für Kaufleute gelehrt. Das Leitbild des ehrbaren Kaufmannes, welches das Vertrauen in die Integrität des Handelspartners in das Zentrum rückte, entstand in einer Zeit, in der Kaufleute Reisende waren, denen man überwiegend mit Skepsis begegnete. In einer von Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise geprägten Zeit wird das Leitbild des ehrbaren Kaufmanns wieder intensiv diskutiert. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes untersuchen dieses Leitbild aus der Perspektive unterschiedlicher Disziplinen wie Philosophie, Literaturwissenschaft, Geschichte, Rechtswissenschaft und Politikwissenschaft sowie erstmalig in kulturvergleichender Sicht (Europa, islamische Welt, Japan).     Abstract: Der Band präsentiert einen Querschnitt einer jungen, gegenwartsbezogenen Türkeiforschung.     Abstract: Alle kulturellen Praktiken sind verkörpert: Ihnen ist die Spannungseinheit von leiblichem Erleben, physischem Tun und kulturellem Sinn eingeschrieben. Von den Kognitions- bis zu den Kulturwissenschaften ist Verkörperung daher mittlerweile ein zentrales Forschungsthema. Der vorgelegte Band widmet sich in interdisziplinärer Perspektive exemplarischen Praktiken und Ritualen des Körpers und will einem drohenden neuen Dualismus zwischen leiblicher und kultureller Verkörperung entgegenwirken.     Abstract: The integration of Muslims into European societies is often seen as a major challenge that is yet to be confronted. This book, by contrast, starts from the observation that on legal, political and organizational levels integration has already taken place. It showcases the variety of theoretical approaches that scholars have developed to conceptualize Muslim life in Europe, and provides detailed empirical analysis of ten European countries. Demonstrating how Muslim life unfolds between conviviality and contentious politics, the contributors describe demographic developments, analyze legal controversies, and explore the action of government and state, Muslim communities and other civil society actors. Driving forces behind the integration of Islam are discussed in detail and compared across countries.

    Abstract: "The Sinophone framework emphasises the diversity of Chinese-speaking communities and cultures, and seeks to move beyond a binary model of China and the West. Indeed, this strikingly resembles attempts within the queer studies movement to challenge the dimorphisms of sex and gender. Bringing together two areas of study that tend to be marginalised within their home disciplines Queer Sinophone Cultures innovatively advances both Sinophone studies and queer studies. It not only examines film and literature from Mainland China but expands its scope to encompass the underrepresented 'Sinophone' world at large (in this case Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and beyond). Sehr interessante Einblicke und Ansätze, sachlich-fundiert und kenntnisreich. Für Wissenschaftler und Profis, aber auch für eingehender am Thema interessierte Laien. (Elisabeth Mair-Gummermann)
