Abstract: Biases related to gender and other demographic factors creep into decisions about which projects to fund with venture capital. Data-driven approaches can help tease out those biases and limit their impact. Algorithmic methods identify potential instances of discrimination and increase transparency, making it easier to find and fix problems. Aversion to algorithms can be tempered by letting decision makers retain some subjective control over the data-driven process.

Abstract: Neural networks are getting smaller. Much smaller. The OK Google team, for example, has run machine learning models that are just 14 kilobytes in size—small enough to work on the digital signal processor in an Android phone. With this practical book, you’ll learn about TensorFlow Lite for Microcontrollers, a miniscule machine learning library that allows you to run machine learning algorithms on tiny hardware. Authors Pete Warden and Daniel Situnayake explain how you can train models that are small enough to fit into any environment, including small embedded devices that can run for a year or more on a single coin cell battery. Ideal for software and hardware developers who want to build embedded devices using machine learning, this guide shows you how to create a TinyML project step-by-step. No machine learning or microcontroller experience is necessary. Learn practical machine learning applications on embedded devices, including simple uses such as speech recognition and gesture detection Train models such as speech, accelerometer, and image recognition, you can deploy on Arduino and other embedded platforms Understand how to work with Arduino and ultralow-power microcontrollers Use techniques for optimizing latency, energy usage, and model and binary size

Abstract: Currently used at many colleges, universities, and high schools, this hands-on introduction to computer science is ideal for people with little or no programming experience. The goal of this concise book is not just to teach you Java, but to help you think like a computer scientist. You’ll learn how to program—a useful skill by itself—but you’ll also discover how to use programming as a means to an end. Authors Allen Downey and Chris Mayfield start with the most basic concepts and gradually move into topics that are more complex, such as recursion and object-oriented programming. Each brief chapter covers the material for one week of a college course and includes exercises to help you practice what you’ve learned. Learn one concept at a time: tackle complex topics in a series of small steps with examples Understand how to formulate problems, think creatively about solutions, and write programs clearly and accurately Determine which development techniques work best for you, and practice the important skill of debugging Learn relationships among input and output, decisions and loops, classes and methods, strings and arrays Work on exercises involving word games, graphics, puzzles, and playing cards The updated second edition of Think Java also features new chapters on polymorphism and data processing, as well as content covering changes through Java 12.

Abstract: Learn how to stop pouring vast sums of money into technology projects that don't have a lasting impact by closing the communication gap between IT and leadership. Too many businesses miss opportunity after opportunity to design, plan, and achieve intentional business change. Why? Because they charter projects focused on delivering software products: IT projects. But as this groundbreaking book points out, there's no such thing as an IT project—or at least there shouldn't be. It's always about intentional business change, or what's the point? It's time to stop providing simplistic, one-dimensional, all-you-gotta-do panaceas. When the only constant in business is change, truly useful IT has to help you change instead of build solutions that are obsolete even before they are completed. IT consultant Bob Lewis, author of the bestselling Bare Bones Project Management, has joined forces with seasoned CIO Dave Kaiser to give you the tools you need. It's a multidimensional, relentlessly practical guide. Condensed to handbook length and seasoned with Lewis's trademark sardonic humor, it's an enjoyable and digestible read as well. Lewis and Kaiser take you step by step through the process of building a collaboration between IT and the rest of the business that really works. Insisting on intentional business change takes patience, communication, and courage, but it has a huge payoff. More to the point, insist on anything else and every penny you spend will be a wasted dime and a waste of time.

Abstract: As more and more data is being collected, concerns are constantly being raised about what data is appropriate to collect and how (or if) it should be analyzed. There are many ethical, privacy, and legal issues to consider, and no clear standards exist in many cases as to what is fair and what is foul. This means that organizations must consider their own principles and risk tolerance in order to implement the right policies. Bill Franks (International Institute For Analytics) explores a range of ethical, privacy, and legal issues that surround analytics today, framing the big questions to consider and detailing some of the trade-offs and ambiguities that must be addressed to answer them. This session was recorded at the 2019 O'Reilly Strata Data Conference in San Francisco.

Abstract: A real-world guide for adapting to the new energy era The Energy Disruption Triangle is a treatise on the energy revolution's real-world impacts, and a handbook for anyone looking to weather the storm. Three major technologies are already changing the energy paradigm: solar energy, electric vehicles, and energy storage. As technology continues to evolve and become more accessible to the masses, the nation's energy habits will experience a dramatic upheaval; this book provides actionable guidance to help you adapt. We are already in the beginning stages of this black swan event, and most people don't know what's coming—but it will come much sooner and much faster than anyone thinks. This book reveals the revolution happening right before our eyes, and shows you how to thrive in this new era. Learn how our energy supplies—and usage—are changing Understand why energy storage matters, and how the technology is evolving Explore the history and future of groundbreaking energy technologies Delve into the disruption of the U.S. energy supply, and the possibility of energy independence Rapidly advancing battery technology is boosting energy storage for homeowners, utilities, and electric vehicle manufacturers, stranding fossil fuels in the ground due to the high price of extraction relative to cost-effective sources such as solar and wind. Traditional energy sources are being phased out, and our nation has come to a fork in the road: uphold the status quo and allow our energy supply to be disrupted, or adapt and advance to a state of total energy independence. The Energy Disruption Triangle explores the state of U.S. energy from source to consumer, and provides insight into the three sectors that are changing the world.

Abstract: The business ideas and innovation philosophies of the world’s great entrepreneurs—for anyone to implement in any business Steve Jobs. Jeff Bezos. Larry Page. Sergey Brin. Zhang Ruimin. Marc Benioff. Millions of words have been written about the great entrepreneurs of the world. This book is not about describing their achievements. Nor is it about their charisma, personal trials, or their place in popular culture. We have all heard or read about them already. This book is about the entrepreneur, the thinker. It is about the grand ideas, the disruptive thoughts, the innovative underpinnings and business philosophies that gave rise to their achievements. Thank You For Disrupting: The Disruptive Business Philosophies of The World’s Great Entrepreneurs examines 20 of the most significant business leaders of our time. Author Jean-Marie Dru, himself a disruptor who coined the term decades ago, explains not only the impact these leaders have had on their own companies, but also their immense influence on the business world as a whole. Each chapter is replete with in-depth analyses, insightful comments, and personal observations from the author, including discussions covering the experimentation and platforms of Jeff Bezos, to the recruitment policies and core values of Sergey Brin and Larry Page, to the complete CSR and company activism of Paul Polman, and many more. Illustrating how the vision of a disruptive innovator can reach far beyond his or her company, this engaging book encourages and inspires readers to become disruptors in in their own businesses. The Disruptive Business Philosophies of The World’s Great Entrepreneurs is a must-read for anyone interested in the why and how behind the most significant and influential business achievements of our time.

Abstract: Testing in production has gotten a bad rap. People act like testing in production implies you aren’t doing due diligence with your tests before production. But it’s more like a fact of life: you can only catch the easy bugs in staging—the known-unknowns, the things you predicted would fail, and the things that have failed before. Which isn’t nothing, but it’s no better than running tests on your laptop. Most interesting problems are only going to manifest under real workloads, on real data, with real users doing unpredictable things under real concurrency and resource pressure. So you should use much fewer of your scarce engineering cycles poring over staging and much more of them building guard rails for prod. Production—where your customers live—is the only environment that matters. Time spent interacting with nonprod systems is wasted time. Replicas are not valuable for helping build your instincts, your skill set, your intuition. Secondary environments actually train you to expect faulty assumptions and to take dangerous shortcuts and run terrifying commands. You should force people to develop and test on production as much as possible and interact with production every day. Charity Majors (Honeycomb) dives into tooling and shares ways to harden production and make it safe for engineers to do their work directly on it—from deploys and canarying to feature flags, instrumentation and observability, human practices and workflows, and much more. This session was recorded at the 2019 O'Reilly Velocity Conference in San Jose.

Abstract: While a mitigation is any action you might take to reduce the impact of a breakage—such as SSHing into an instance and clearing the cache or switching off machines to close down a vulnerability—generic mitigations are actions that first responders can take even before the root cause is fully understood. As such, they’re useful for addressing a wide variety of outages. Every service should employ at least one or two generic mitigations to minimize outage impacts. In this Spotlight on Cloud , Jennifer Mace, site reliability engineer at Google, shows you how to distinguish between specific and generic mitigations and how to identify what generic mitigations your service might need. Abstract: As acute shortages for data scientists and engineers further develop in competitive talent markets, it’s imperative to address biases and bottlenecks in the hiring of data scientists and engineers. Most companies approach hiring and talent management as an art, relying on judgment and experience when conceptualizing jobs, drafting JDs, and screening and assessing candidates. Maryam Jahanshahi (TapRecruit) explains how often-innocuous recruiting decisions have dramatic impacts on hiring outcomes, from the success of a hiring process to the candidate pool composition and the amount of time it takes to hire. She then discusses how using data-driven approaches provide an arbitrage opportunity that has significant impact on both the quality and diversity of candidate pools for data science and engineering roles. Maryam covers the role of confounders in the hiring process, explores the complexity of job descriptions, and shares how she extracted signal from noise to extract the key conclusions she presents. She then presents key hiring heuristics in three vignettes: the one word that creates significant ripple effects at every stage of the hiring process; the surprising way that startups do better in the talent war for data scientists and engineers; and hacking diversity, or how she and her team learned to reproducibly and robustly recruit a diverse pool of data scientists and engineers. This session was recorded at the 2019 O'Reilly Strata Data Conference in San Francisco.

Abstract: Security is an ever more important topic for system designers. As our world becomes digital, today’s safely hidden back office system is tomorrow’s public API, open to anyone on the internet with a hacking tool and time on their hands. So the days of hoping that security is someone else’s problem are over. The security community has developed a well-understood set of principles used to build systems that are secure (or at least securable) by design, but this topic often isn’t included in the training of software developers, who assume that it’s only relevant to security specialists. Even when principles are explained, they’re often shrouded in the jargon of the security engineering community, and so mainstream developers struggle to understand and apply them. Eoin Woods (Endava) explains why secure design matters and then introduces a set of 10 of the most important proven principles for designing secure systems, distilled from the wisdom of the security engineering community. He discusses each principle in the context of mainstream system design, rather than in the specialized language of security engineering, focusing on how it’s applied in practice to improve security. This session was recorded at the 2019 O'Reilly Software Architecture Conference in New York.

Abstract: Gain the key language concepts and programming techniques of Scala in the context of big data analytics and Apache Spark. The book begins by introducing you to Scala and establishes a firm contextual understanding of why you should learn this language, how it stands in comparison to Java, and how Scala is related to Apache Spark for big data analytics. Next, you’ll set up the Scala environment ready for examining your first Scala programs. This is followed by sections on Scala fundamentals including mutable/immutable variables, the type hierarchy system, control flow expressions and code blocks. The author discusses functions at length and highlights a number of associated concepts such as functional programming and anonymous functions. The book then delves deeper into Scala’s powerful collections system because many of Apache Spark’s APIs bear a strong resemblance to Scala collections. Along the way you’ll see the development life cycle of a Scala program. This involves compiling and building programs using the industry-standard Scala Build Tool (SBT). You’ll cover guidelines related to dependency management using SBT as this is critical for building large Apache Spark applications. Scala Programming for Big Data Analytics concludes by demonstrating how you can make use of the concepts to write programs that run on the Apache Spark framework. These programs will provide distributed and parallel computing, which is critical for big data analytics. What You Will Learn See the fundamentals of Scala as a general-purpose programming language Understand functional programming and object-oriented programming constructs in Scala Use Scala collections and functions Develop, package and run Apache Spark applications for big data analytics Who This Book Is For Data scientists, data analysts and data engineers who intend to use Apache Spark for large-scale analytics.

Abstract: From determining the most convenient rider pickup points to predicting the fastest routes, Uber uses data-driven analytics to create seamless trip experiences. Uber’s analysts and engineers wanted to run real-time analytics with deep learning models. But copying data from one source to another is pretty expensive. Zhenxiao Luo explains how Uber supports real-time analytics with deep learning on the fly, without any data copying. He starts with the company’s big data infrastructure, specifically Hadoop, Spark, and Presto, and discusses how Uber uses Presto as an interactive SQL engine and deployed Hadoop Distributed File System, Pinot, MySQL, and Elasticsearch as storage solutions. He then details how Uber built a Presto Elasticsearch connector from scratch to support real-time analytics on heterogeneous data. He concludes by sharing the company’s production experience and roadmap. This session was recorded at the 2019 O'Reilly Strata Data Conference in San Francisco.

Abstract: How can you communicate effectively and create meaningful interactions in an increasingly digital world? By teaching. In Make Yourself Clear , educational experts and entrepreneurs Reshan Richards and Stephen J. Valentine explain the many parallels between teaching and business and offer companies, both large and small, concrete advice for building the teaching capacity of their salespeople, leaders, service professionals, and trainers. The rise of digital communications has led to three emergent, often problematic, forces: automation, an increase in the speed and volume of information transfer, and an unmet need for people to feel more than satisfied in their interpersonal transactions, particularly between sellers and consumers. Through a mix of research, anecdotes, case studies, and theoretical speculation, this book equips readers to build understanding within their current and future audiences by leveraging the tools, methods, and mindsets used by successful teachers. You will be equipped to understand others better, and in turn, to be better understood. Make Yourself Clear is not prescriptive, nor does it suggest rigid steps, pillars, or frameworks. Instead, it provides immediately recognizable and relatable context, suggesting actions that can be tried, measured, tested, and iterated upon in any communication context that involves the exchange of information and ideas. Ground your business communications in proven techniques Profit from expert instruction given by those who have helped thousands of readers and workshop students Develop your sales career by applying effective teaching practices to customer and colleague interactions For educators, adopt the latest best practices into your teaching style Backed by thorough research and extensive real-world testing, Make Yourself Clear opens a door to more productive communication and more effective interactions. It offers compelling and relevant insights to longtime fans of the work of Richards and Valentine and newcomers alike, leading to real and lasting benefits.

Abstract: Machine Learning with Spark and Python Essential Techniques for Predictive Analytics, Second Edition simplifies ML for practical uses by focusing on two key algorithms. This new second edition improves with the addition of Spark—a ML framework from the Apache foundation. By implementing Spark, machine learning students can easily process much large data sets and call the spark algorithms using ordinary Python code. Machine Learning with Spark and Python focuses on two algorithm families (linear methods and ensemble methods) that effectively predict outcomes. This type of problem covers many use cases such as what ad to place on a web page, predicting prices in securities markets, or detecting credit card fraud. The focus on two families gives enough room for full descriptions of the mechanisms at work in the algorithms. Then the code examples serve to illustrate the workings of the machinery with specific hackable code.

Abstract: In recent years, we’ve seen tremendous improvements in artificial intelligence, due to the advances of neural-based models. However, the more popular these algorithms and techniques get, the more serious the consequences of data and user privacy. These issues will drastically impact the future of AI research—specifically how neural-based models are developed, deployed, and evaluated. Yishay Carmiel (IntelligentWire) shares techniques and explains how data privacy will impact machine learning development and how future training and inference will be affected. Yishay first dives into why training on private data should be addressed, federated learning, and differential privacy. He then discusses why inference on private data should be addressed, homomorphic encryption and neural networks, a polynomial approximation of neural networks, protecting data in neural networks, data reconstruction from neural networks, and methods and techniques to secure data reconstruction from neural networks. This session was recorded at the 2019 O'Reilly Artificial Intelligence Conference in New York.

Abstract: Green technologies are no longer the “future” of science, but the present. With more and more mature industries, such as the process industries, making large strides seemingly every single day, and more consumers demanding products created from green technologies, it is essential for any business in any industry to be familiar with the latest processes and technologies. It is all part of a global effort to “go greener,” and this is nowhere more apparent than in fermentation technology. This book describes relevant aspects of industrial-scale fermentation, an expanding area of activity, which already generates commercial values of over one third of a trillion US dollars annually, and which will most likely radically change the way we produce chemicals in the long-term future. From biofuels and bulk amino acids to monoclonal antibodies and stem cells, they all rely on mass suspension cultivation of cells in stirred bioreactors, which is the most widely used and versatile way to produce. Today, a wide array of cells can be cultivated in this way, and for most of them genetic engineering tools are also available. Examples of products, operating procedures, engineering and design aspects, economic drivers and cost, and regulatory issues are addressed. In addition, there will be a discussion of how we got to where we are today, and of the real world in industrial fermentation. This chapter is exclusively dedicated to large-scale production used in industrial settings.

Abstract: The essential resource that offers a comprehensive understanding of OLED optimizations Highly Efficient OLEDs. Materials Based on Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) offers substantial information on the working principle of OLEDs and on new types of emitting materials (organic and inorganic). As the authors explain, OLEDs that use the Singlet-Harvesting mechanism based on the molecular property of TADF work according to a new exciton harvesting principle. Thus, low-cost emitter materials, such as Cu(I) or Ag(I) complexes as well as metal-free organic molecules, have the potential to replace high-cost rare metal complexes being currently applied in OLED technology. With contributions from an international panel of experts on the topic, the text shows how the application of new TADF materials allow for the development of efficient OLED displays and lighting systems. This new mechanism is the gateway to the third-generation of luminescent materials. This important resource: Offers a state-of-the-art compilation of the latest results in the dynamically developing field of OLED materials Is edited by a pioneer in the field of OLED material technology Contains a detailed application-oriented guide to new low-cost materials for displays and lighting Puts the focus on the emerging fields of OLED technology Written for materials scientists, solid state chemists, solid state physicists, and electronics engineers, Highly Efficient OLEDs. Materials Based on Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence offers a comprehensive resource to the latest advances of OLEDs based on new TADF materials.

Abstract: Are you drowning in a sea of digital photos? Unable to find the shots you’re looking for, or to stay on top of managing all the photos you’re taking? Digital photography expert Jeff Carlson gives you a plan for tackling this problem, starting with preparing your camera ahead of time, then choosing the right app to manage your photos, judging and organizing your photos, and backing up your photos for safekeeping. In this book—an expanded and updated version of Take Control of Your Digital Photos on a Mac —Jeff extends his advice to cover both macOS and Windows (along with limited coverage of mobile platforms), and to address a broader range of photo management apps, including Apple Photos, Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, and Exposure X5 . With this book, you’ll learn how to: Get started with the minimum amount of work: Take advantage of software intelligence to do some of the categorizing work for you, and find out how you can accomplish some tasks even if you have little time. Prep your camera: Learn four actions you can take before you head out the door that will make things easier after you return with new pictures. Get your app together: Decide which app you’ll use to organize your digital photos, compare popular choices, and find out Jeff’s recommended application. Import the right way: Learn how to assign valuable metadata to all images that come in during the import stage. Pick winners and losers: Assign ratings to your photos, and remove or hide unwanted photos. Apply keywords and metadata: Take a second pass on applying keywords to individual shots (after starting the process during import), learn how to apply geotags using GPS data from external devices (like an iPhone), and use facial recognition to collect shots of specific friends and family members. Search with smart albums: Build smart albums whose contents change depending on criteria you’ve specified, allowing you to find photos more easily. While searching, learn how to remove duplicate photos. Go mobile: Find the right online service for making your photos available on mobile devices, based on your needs and which desktop photo management app you use. Protect your photos: Learn how to implement a backup strategy that will preserve all your data, not just your photos, and how to archive photos for the future.
