    Abstract: This new work summarizes the research on all forms of media on children, looking at how much time they spend with media everyday, television programming and its impact on children, how advertising has changed to appeal directly to children and the effects on children and the consumer behavior of parents, the relationship between media use and scholastic achievement, the influence of violence in media on anti-social behavior, and the role of media in influencing attitudes on body image, sex and work roles, fashion, & lifestyle. The average American child, aged 2-17, watches 25 hours of TV per week, plays 1 hr per day of video or computer games, and spends an additional 36 min per day on the internet. 19% of children watch more than 35 hrs per week of TV. This in the face of research that shows TV watching beyond 10 hours per week decreases scholastic performance. In 1991, George Comstock published Television and the American Child, which immediately became THE standard reference for the research community of the effects of television on children. Since then, interest in the topic has mushroomed, as the availability and access of media to children has become more widespread and occurs earlier in their lifetimes. No longer restricted to television, media impacts children through the internet, computer and video games, as well as television and the movies. There are videos designed for infants, claiming to improve cognitive development, television programs aimed for younger and younger children-even pre-literates, computer programs aimed for toddlers, and increasingly graphic, interactive violent computer games. *Presents the most recent research on the media use of young people *Investigates the content of children's media and addresses areas of great concern including violence, sexual behavior, and commercialization *Discusses policy making in the area of children and the media *Focuses on experiences unique to children and adolescents

    Description / Table of Contents: Migration, bislang verstanden als Bewegung im physisch-geografischen Raum, wird vor allem durch imaginäre Prozesse des Raumbegehrens motiviert. Imaginäre Topografien etablieren dabei ein Netz von Bedeutungen, in dem Räume und Raumlogiken entstehen und Migrationsformen als kulturelle Raumpraktiken für einzelne Subjekte, auch für Staaten signifikant werden können. An dieser Raumkonstitution sind heute neben Schrift- verstärkt auch Bild- und Klangmedien beteiligt.     Abstract: Migration, bislang verstanden als Bewegung im physisch-geografischen Raum, wird vor allem durch imaginäre Prozesse des Raumbegehrens motiviert. Imaginäre Topografien etablieren dabei ein Netz von Bedeutungen, in dem Räume und Raumlogiken entstehen und Migrationsformen als kulturelle Raumpraktiken für einzelne Subjekte, auch für Staaten signifikant werden können. Diese Definition vergisst jedoch die Semantik der Masse, die in die Wortbildung eingeht und bis heute gesellschaftsweite Vorstellungen über die Funktionsweise von Massenmedien bestimmt. Dabei verweist der Masse-Begriff vor allem auf einen spezifischen Rezeptionsmodus. Das Buch untersucht, wie massenpsychologische Konzepte seit Gustave Le Bon das Wissen über Massenmedien und ihre Rezipienten konturieren. Ebenso zeigt es auf, welche Vorstellungen von Medien die Massentheorie bereithält

    Abstract: Soul-Musik und »Black Power«-Solidarität, blonde »Afros« und schwarz-weiße Werbekampagnen: Afroamerikanisches hatte in verschiedenen Feldern der Gegen- und Popkultur der Bundesrepublik um 1968 Konjunktur. Diese Studie zeigt Formen und Hintergründe der »Afroamerikanophilie« auf und zeichnet damit ein ungewohntes Bild der Zeit um 1968, als ein zunehmend »exklusives« afroamerikanisches Selbstbewusstsein entstand und die »weiße« Suche nach imaginären Einlassstellen in die »schwarze« Welt zugleich eine neue Qualität gewann.     Abstract: Due to falling fertility rates, the aging of the baby-boom cohort, and increases in life expectancy, the percentage of the population that is elderly is expected to increase rapidly in the United States and Japan over the next two decades. These fourteen essays show that, despite differences in culture and social and government structure, population aging will have many similar macro and micro effects on the economic status and behavior of the elderly in both countries. The most obvious effects will be on social programs such as public pension systems and the provision for medical needs of the elderly. But, the contributors demonstrate, aging will also affect markets for labor, capital, housing, and health care services. It will affect firms through their participation in the demand side of the labor market and through their provisions for pensions. And aging will influence saving rates, the rate of return on assets, the balance of payments, and, most likely, economic growth. This volume will interest scholars and policy makers concerned with the economics of aging.

    Description / Table of Contents: Städte haben ihren individuellen Sound - einen Klang, der sich auch musikalisch darstellt. Dazu gehört - aber nicht nur - die Umsetzung von industriellem Krach in futuristische »rumori« oder konkreten »bruit«. Städte sind Zentren der Kommunikation, hochaktive Knotenpunkte globaler Netzwerke. Hier treffen Menschen mit den unterschiedlichsten ethnischen, sozialen und kulturellen Hintergründen sowie musikalischen Bedürfnissen und Fähigkeiten aufeinander. Aus dieser Konfrontation entstehen Musiken, in denen sich ihr Anderssein und ihre Identität manifestieren, in denen sich aber auch Spuren der Anpassung und Integration finden - und die fast immer populäre Musikformen annehmen. Denn die Stadt als Handelsplatz macht zur Ware, was zuvor als Volksmusik mündlich tradiert wurde oder als Kunst gemeint war. Die Stadt ermöglicht unendlich viele Chancen der Kommunikation, die doch nie ausreichend zu sein scheinen
