    Abstract: This collection of multi-disciplinary essays offers a fresh, perspective on Central Asian art and culture as it gains increased attention on both the local and international stage.     Abstract: "Mexico has become notorious for crime-related violence, and the efforts of governments and national and international NGOs to counter this violence have proven largely futile. Citizens against Crime and Violence studies societal responses to crime and violence within one of Mexico's most affected regions, the state of Michoacán. Based on comparative ethnography conducted over twelve months by a team of anthropologists and sociologists across six localities of Michoacán, ranging from the most rural to the most urban, the contributors consider five varieties of societal responses: local citizen security councils that define security and attempt to influence its policing, including by self-defense groups; cultural activists looking to create safe 'cultural' fields from which to transform their social environment; organizations in the state capital that combine legal and political strategies against less visible violence (forced disappearance, gender violence, anti-LGBT); church-linked initiatives bringing to bear the church's institutionality, including to denounce 'state capture'; and women's organizations creating 'safe' networks allowing to influence violence prevention"--

    Abstract: Foucaults Geschichte des Wahnsinns im Zeitalter der Vernunft erschien 1961 ursprünglich als Dissertation. Sie stellt verschiedene Aspekte des Wahnsinns und dessen Rollenbild in psychiatrischen Konzepten von der Antike über die Jahrhunderte kritisch dar, indem sie der Frage nachgeht, ob der Wahnsinn eine historische Universale oder etwas Gemachtes ist. Das Buch handelt auch von den bis in die Gegenwart hineinreichenden Bestrebungen der Psychiatrie am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts, den Wahnsinn auf Geisteskrankheit zu reduzieren und so, vom Gesunden, Normalen und Vernünftigen abspaltend, zu pathologisieren. Die gesellschaftlich verhängte Bestrafung für den Wahnsinn wird in den Behandlungsanstalten vollzogen. Das Bewusstsein verbindet die Begriffe "Wahnsinn" und "Verbrechen", während die Vernunft deren Behandlung in Gefängnisanstalten und Hospitals autorisiert. Der Nachbar wird eingesperrt, um seinen eigenen gesunden Menschenverstand zu beweisen, zitiert Foucault Dostojewski. Die Vernunft gilt als allgemein akzeptierter Gegensatz zum Wahnsinn. Sie ist gekennzeichnet durch die gnadenlose Sprache des Nicht-Wahnsinns, in der die Menschen in ihrer Haltung überlegener Vernunft miteinander verkehren. Anstatt diese Polarität hinzunehmen, schlägt der Autor vor, die Suche nach einem einheitlichen und absoluten Wahrheitsbegriff aufzugeben und einen Zwischenraum der Leere distanziert wahrzunehmen, in dem die Trennung zwischen dem wahnsinnigen und nicht wahnsinnigen Menschen noch nicht vollzogen ist.     Abstract: This book attempts to reintegrate women into the socio-political milieu of early medieval Orissa. Its sources are inscriptions, mostly Sanskrit, that date from the seventh century to the end of the reign of the Imperial Ganga ruler, Anantavarman Codagangadeva (CE 1078-1147). The evidence indicates that royal and non-royal women had varying but undeniably important roles to play in the socio-political fabric of this prominent regional entity. The Bhauma-Kara dynasty (c. mid-eighth/ninth-late tenth century) that witnessed the rule of six women, four of them in succession, is a case in point. In addition, the palpable presence of several other royal and non-royal women is consistently documented in the epigraphic record. This is an aspect that has received very little attention in secondary works, thereby rendering this study a pioneering one. The work follows on from Rangachari's earlier Invisible Women, Visible Histories: Gender, Polity and Society in North India (7th to 12th century ad), which had focused on important gendered aspects of early medieval north India through an analysis of literary and epigraphic sources of Kashmir, Kanauj, Bengal and Bihar. The invisibilization of women, whereby their presence is routinely ignored or trivialized, was, similarly, its underlying essence.

    Abstract: "This book presents innovative and creative ethnographic perspectives on the intersection between art, anthropology, and contested cultural heritage resulting from ethnographic and artistic research by the TRACES project (an interdisciplinary research project funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme involving a collaboration between institutional partners in 11 European countries). The case studies in this volume critically assess and evaluate how and in which arrangements artistic/aesthetic methods and creative everyday practices contribute to strengthening communities both culturally and economically. They also explore the extent to which these methods emphasize minority voices and ultimately set in motion a process of reflexive Europeanisation from below which unfolds within Europe and beyond its borders. At the heart of these ethnographic case studies is the development of a new way of transmitting contentious cultural heritage, which responds to the present situation in Europe of unstable political conditions and a sense of Europe in crisis. With chapters looking at difficult art exhibitions on colonialism, death masks, Holocaust memorials and skull collections, the contributors articulate a response to the crisis in current economic-political conditions in Europe and advances brand new theoretical groundwork on the configuration of a renewed European identity. Through combining studies of heritage within museums, this volume will appeal to students and scholars of anthropology, heritage and museum studies, and visual culture"--

    Abstract: By presenting a history of Western ethnography of animism in East Timor during the Portuguese period, this intriguing study offers an original synthesis of the country`s history, culture and anthropology. The book consists of ten chapters, each one a narrative of the work and experience of a particular ethnographer. Covering a selection of seminal 19th- and 20th-century ethnographies, the author explores the relationship between spiritual beliefs, colonial administration, ethnographic interests and fieldwork experience. It is argued that the presence of outsiders precipitated a new `transformative animism` as colonial control over Portuguese Timor was consolidated. This came about because increasingly powerful outsiders posed threats and offered rewards to the Timorese just as the powerful ancestor spirits had long done; consequently, the Timorese ritualised their dealings with outsiders following their established model for appealing to spirits. Bringing colonial and professional ethnography into the one frame of reference, it is shown that ethnographers of both types not only bore witness to these processes of transformative animism, they also exemplified them.

    Abstract: The Culture of Invention in the Americas takes the theoretical contribution of one of anthropology's most radical thinkers, Roy Wagner, as a basis for conceptual improvisation. It uses Wagner's most synthetic and complex insights - developed in Melanesia and captured in the title of his most famous book, The Invention of Culture - as a springboard for an exploration of other anthropological and societal imaginaries. What do the inherent reflexivity, recursiveness and limits of all and any peoples' anthropologies render for us to write and think about, and live within? Who is doing anthropology about whom? Which are the best ways to convey our partial grasp of these conundrums: theory, poetry, jokes? No claim is made to resolve what should not be seen as a problem. Instead, inspired by Roy Wagner's study and use of metaphor, this book explores analogical variations of these riddles.The chapters bring together ethnographic regions rarely investigated together: indigenous peoples of Mexico and Lowland South America; and Afro-American peoples of Brazil and Cuba.     Abstract: About 150 years ago L. H. Morgan compared relationship terminologies, societal forms, and ideas of property to recognize the interdependence of the three domains.     Abstract: The contrapuntal readings practiced in the present volume, which are based on different ways of thinking and seeing reality, call into question the sorting and classifications practiced up to now. Migration is not degraded to a collaborative research centre, but is rather seen as a social analysis and placed at the centre of scientific considerations. The focus is on approaches and ideas in which historical developments and global changes are thought from the perspective and experience of migration, without however overlooking the asymmetrical power relations and structural inequalities. The Motto "Migration moves and forms" expresses this attitude. - Die in dem vorliegenden Band praktizierten kontrapunktischen Lesarten, die auf anderen Denk­haltungen und Wirklichkeitsauffassungen beruhen, suspendieren lang eingeübte Sortierungen und Klassifikationen. Migration wird nicht zu einem Sonderforschungs­bereich degradiert, sondern als Gesellschaftsforschung betrachtet und ins Zentrum ­wissenschaftlicher Überlegungen gerückt. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Zugänge und Gedanken, in denen historische Entwicklungen und globalgesellschaftliche Zusammenhänge aus der Perspektive und Erfahrung von Migration ­gedacht werden, ohne jedoch die asym­metrischen Machtverhältnisse und strukturellen Ungleich­heiten zu übersehen. Das Motto "Migration bewegt und bildet" bringt diese Haltung zum Ausdruck.

    Abstract: Ruptures brings together leading and emerging international anthropologists to explore the concept of ‘rupture’. Understood as radical and often forceful forms of discontinuity, rupture is the active ingredient of the current sense of a world in turmoil, lying at the heart of some of the most defining experiences of our time: the rise of populist politics, the corollary impulse towards protest and even revolutionary change, as well as moves towards violence and terror, and the responses these moves elicit. Rupture is addressed in selected ethnographic and historical contexts: images of the guillotine in the French revolution; reactions to Trump’s election in the USA; the motivations of young Danes who join ISIS in Syria; ‘butterfly effect’ activism among environmental anarchists in northern Europe; the experiences of political trauma and its ‘repair’ through privately sponsored museums of Mao’s revolution in China; people’s experience of the devastating 2001 earthquake in Gujarat; the ‘inner’ rupture of Protestant faith among Danish nationalist theologians; and the attempt to invent ex nihilo an alphabet for use in Christian prophetic movements in Congo and Angola.

    Abstract: Sketches in the Theory of Culture is a remarkable work by all measures. Written by Zygmunt Bauman when he was still a professor in Poland and originally intended for publication in 1968, it was suppressed by the Polish government in the wave of repression following the protests in March of that year.     Abstract: Migration has always been a feature of Nepali society. Waves of Khas, Brahmans, and associated service castes were already moving south and east through the Himalayan foothills a millennium ago. As the population expanded, Nepalis from all backgrounds have continually moved onwards in search of new farmland and new opportunities, often encouraged to do so by local communities, local headmen, and the state. In the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, that process continued eastwards from present-day Nepal into the north-east of India and beyond. Over the last thirty years international labour migration, as well as migration consequent on tertiary education, has radically changed the patterns of settlement of Nepalis outside their homeland. The present volume covers the many different contexts-from the USA to the Gulf, from India to Burma and Singapore-where large numbers of Nepalis are settled or working long-term. Taken together, and organized by region of settlement, the contributions in this book provide a comprehensive overview of Nepali diaspora populations around the world in their contemporary contexts. The common theme binding this volume is the exploration of the process of 'ethnogenesis' or the emergence of strong ethnic identities in which the contributors analyse how such identities strengthen more easily in the diaspora with a large population, than in the homeland.
