    Abstract: "Focused on research within Africa and the African diaspora, contributors to this volume think through the painful iterations of trauma, systemic racism, and the vestiges of colonial oppression as well as the processes of healing and emancipation that emerge from wounded states. Their chapters explore an acoustemology of intimacy, woman-centered eroticism generated through musical performance, desire and longing in ethnographic knowledge production, and listening as intimacy. On the other end of the spectrum, authors engage with and question the fetishization of race in jazz; examine conceptions of vulgarity and profanity in movement and dance-ethnography; and address pain, trauma, and violation, whether physical, spiritual, intellectual, or political.     Abstract: "Citizenship is a fantasy of political community without others. How is it faring in today's world of authoritarianism, failed states, and climate crisis? In a world where democratic experiment is, by now, a networked and global proposition? What might we learn from music - and from ethnomusicology? The relationship between the idea of citizenship and music is long-standing, but it has not yet been looked at from a perspective informed by postcolonialism and today's decolonizing debates. The case studies in this volume are, consequently, drawn from across Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Its first chapter locates the current ethnomusicological interest in citizenship in broad critical landscape, focusing on approaches to audience, media, voice and performance. The second surveys a growing body of recent ethnomusicological literature on citizenship, theorized in terms of identity, technocracy, and intimacy. The third comprises case studies developing an approach to citizenship and political subjectivity beyond conventional liberal categories, defined by mobility ('the citizen on his bike'), collectivity ('the citizen in the crowd') and activism ('the citizen in the square'). The conclusion offers an argument about the implications for citizenship studies of today's thinking in ethnomusicology, musicology and sound studies, reflecting on the hardening rhetoric of political belonging in Europe."

Schamanen bewegen sich in Ekstase in unsichtbaren Welten, mittelalterliche Mystikerinnen vereinigten sich in ihr mit Gott, und der Rausch war und ist ein fester Bestandteil jeder Gesellschaft. Weil sie schwer kontrollierbar sind, sind Ekstasen bis heute verpönt - völlig verschwunden sind sie jedoch nie. Und kehren mit aller Macht zurück: Überraschenderweise begegnen wir ihnen heute nicht nur beim Rave oder bei schamanistischen Ritualen, sondern auch in Yogaklassen, Achtsamkeitsseminaren und Workshops, die die Leistungsfähigkeit im Job verbessern sollen. Und nicht zuletzt zeigt sich der neue Boom der Ekstatik in Krisenphänomenen wie einer martialischen Männlichkeit, in Massenbewegungen wie dem gewaltsamen Sturm aufs Kapitol in Washington oder den Protesten gegen die Coronamassnahmen. Woher aber kommt diese neue Lust an der Ekstase?     Abstract: Chöre sind aus der deutschen Laienmusikszene ebenso wenig wegzudenken wie Berichte über mit dem gemeinsamen Singen einhergehende Gefühle. Was allerdings spielt sich in der Proben-Praxis von Chören im Hinblick auf gefühlsbezogene Phänomene ab? Welche Strukturen zeigen sich, wenn Affektivität nicht im Sinne privater Gefühlszustände, sondern als sozial gewachsenes Tun verstanden wird? Diesen Fragen widmet sich das vorliegende Buch, in dem die Praktiken eines Laien-Pop-Chors ethnographisch und mit Fokus auf affektivem Geschehen beforscht werden. Die praxistheoretisch fundierte Arbeit fokussiert dabei vor allem darauf, wie affektive Zuschreibungen in den Chorpraktiken sichtbar und als Mittel der Probenarbeit routinehaft eingesetzt werden. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf affektbezogenen Ansagen und davon ausgehend auf der Frage nach dem praktischen Wissen, das die Sänger*innen zu kompetenten Teilnehmer*innen ihrer Chor-Praxis macht. Das Potential praxeologischer Emotionskonzepte für die empirische Untersuchung musikbezogener Praxen manifestiert sich in detaillierten Fallanalysen der beforschten Praxis, die deren Affektivität nicht nur empirisch greifbar machen, sondern sie zugleich auch auf produktive Weise entmystifizieren. Die Autorin Anna Rizzi arbeitet als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin und Lehrkraft für besondere Aufgaben am Department Kunst und Musik der Universität zu Köln mit den Schwerpunkten Pop-Chor-Forschung und Musikvermittlung. Sie ist freiberuflich als Chorleiterin und Stimmbildnerin tätig.

    Abstract: Zwischen 1986 und 1989 fanden abseits des offiziellen DDR-Kulturbetriebes 13 Jenaer Hofvernissagen statt, die einem breiten Publikum freie Formen bildender Kunst, Literatur, Musik, Film und Theater zugänglich machten. So entstand in Jena eine „kulturelle Parallelwelt", in der alternative Handlungsmuster und Lebensentwürfe öffentlich sichtbar wurden. Neben zeit­, kultur­ und kunstgeschichtlichen Aufsätzen sowie Werkbetrachtungen vermitteln zahlreiche historische Quellen, Fotografien und Kunstwerke das Wirken einer überregional bedeutsamen, selbstbestimmten Kulturszene in den letzten Jahren der DDR.

    Abstract: Kulturelle Bildung kann maßgeblich die Persönlichkeitsentwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen unterstützen. Im Projekt InKuBi wurde ein Indikatorenset entwickelt, mit dem Entwicklungen in diesem Bereich analysiert werden können. Kinder und Jugendliche können sich durch kreatives Gestalten und die aktive Rezeption von Kunst und Kultur unabhängig von ihrem familiären, kulturellen, sozialen und ökonomischen Hintergrund mit der Welt auseinandersetzen. Schon lange fördert der Bund die kulturelle Bildung im Programm „Kultur macht stark". Bisher lagen aber keine belastbaren Daten zum Status quo und zu Entwicklungen im Rahmen des Programms vor. Um mehr Steuerungswissen zu generieren, wurde im Projekt InKuBi ein exemplarisches Indikatorenset entwickelt. Die Indikatoren orientieren sich an der Systematik des nationalen Bildungsberichts und legen den Grundstein für ein Monitoringsystem kultureller Bildung in Deutschland. Die Studie, die von der Stiftung Mercator gefördert wurde, zeigt die Entstehung und die Grundlagen des Indikatorensets sowie die Bedeutung einer datengestützten Gesamtschau für die kulturelle Bildung im Rahmen eines bundesweiten Bildungsmonitorings.

    Abstract: Postkoloniale Perspektiven im Kunstbetrieb und in der Kulturellen Bildung haben Hochkonjunktur. Doch werden diese Konzepte meist genutzt, ohne dass eine tiefergreifende Auseinandersetzung mit ihnen stattfindet. Dabei wären umfassendere Debatten um und mit Theorien des Postkolonialismus dringend notwendig, etwa, um die Zumutungen der dominanten eurozentrischen Ausstellungs- und Vermittlungspraxen aufzudecken. Die Beiträge des Bandes beleuchten die Verantwortung der Kunst und Kunstvermittlung aus einer explizit postkolonialen Perspektive. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf dem »double bind«, der das Feld durchzieht und sich äußert in einer dilemmatischen Position zwischen Subversion und Affirmation. Dabei werden sowohl diskriminierende Praxen im Feld entlarvt als auch eine (auto-)kritische Theorieentwicklung vorangetrieben.

    Abstract: Anfang der 1920er Jahre erreichte Jazzmusik Europa und verbreitete sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit durch Hörensagen, amerikanische Musikerinnen und Musiker und später auch Schallplatten in Deutschland. Die Musik wirbelte das kulturelle Leben und seine Diskurse in einem Maße auf, dass die kulturelle Elite um den Fortbestand der europäischen musikalischen Traditionen bangte: Jazz wurde einerseits vehement abgelehnt und andererseits euphorisch begrüßt und als Ausdruck von Freiheit verstanden.Dieser "Jazzaufprall" in den Jahren zwischen 1924 und 1929 wird in der Studie anhand von zeitgenössischen Betrachtungen beleuchtet: Was passierte mit den unterschiedlichen Dimensionen des Stadtlebens? Wie wurden die fremde Kultur und die Musik in die bestehenden kulturellen Szenen eingeordnet? Und inwiefern konstruierten sich in Berlin durch diesen internationalen Einfluss neue Facetten einer urbanen Identität?

    Abstract: "In this deep dive into the Jamaican music world filled with the voices of creators, producers, and consumers, Larisa Kingston Mann-DJ, media law expert, and ethnographer-identifies how a culture of collaboration lies at the heart of Jamaican creative practices and legal personhood. In street dances, recording sessions, and global genres such as the riddim, notions of originality include reliance on shared knowledge and authorship as an interactive practice. In this context, musicians, music producers, and audiences are often resistant to conventional copyright practices. And this resistance, Mann reveals, goes beyond cultural concerns. Because many working-class and poor people are cut off from the full benefits of citizenship on the basis of race, class, and geography, Jamaican music spaces are an important site of social commentary and political action in the face of the state's limited reach and neglect of social services and infrastructure. Music makers organize performance and commerce in ways that defy, though not without danger, state ordinances and intellectual property law and provide poor Jamaicans avenues for self-expression and self-definition that are closed off to them in the wider society.     Abstract: Der Sammelband stellt die Frage nach den Erscheinungsformen und Ausdrucksweisen des Antisemitismus in der Musik. Als „negative Leitidee der Moderne“ ist Antisemitismus in sämtlichen Musikrichtungen zu finden und wird auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen vermittelt: sei es durch Songtexte, Albumcover, Musikvideos, Bühnenauftritte, durch die Musikform bzw. des Stils an sich oder die ideologische und strukturelle Einbindung von Musiker:innen in die extrem rechte Szene bis hin zur Beeinflussung ganzer Musikszenen durch die antisemitische BDS-Kampagne. In den Aufsätzen geben die Autor:innen daher einen Überblick zu aktuellen Entwicklungen und liefern Analysen und Einschätzungen zu den mannigfaltigen antisemitischen Verstrickungen in der Musik. Mit Beiträgen von Lukas Geck, Maria Kanitz, Annica Peter, Jan Schäfer, Jakob Baier, Kai E. Schubert, Niels Penke, Marcus Stiglegger, Timo Büchner, Melanie Hermann, Marc Grimm, Nico Unkelbach, Nicholas Potter, Nathalie Friedländer, Tom D. Uhlig.
    Abstract: This anthology addresses the question of how anti-Semitism appears and is expressed in modern music. As a ‘negative guiding idea of modernity’, anti-Semitism can be found in all musical genres and is conveyed on different levels, be it through song lyrics, album covers, music videos, stage performances, through the musical form or style itself, or the ideological and structural integration of musicians into the extreme rightwing scene, all the way to the influence of entire music scenes through the anti-Semitic BDS campaign. In the essays in this book, the authors therefore give an overview of current develop-ments and provide analyses and assessments of the manifold anti-Semitic manifestations in music. With contributions by Lukas Geck, Maria Kanitz, Annica Peter, Jan Schäfer, Jakob Baier, Kai E.     Abstract: Der Kalte Krieg wurde kälter, der Kampf um die politisch-ideologische Lufthoheit zwischen Ost und West heftiger. Aber zugleich geschah in den späten 70ern und 80ern Erstaunliches. Der deutsch-deutsche Kulturaustausch geriet heftig in Bewegung - ausgerechnet in dem Bereich, der als besonders sensibel galt: der Pop- und Rockmusik. DDR-Bands wie City, Pankow und Puhdys wurden erstmals auf BRD-Tour geschickt, Karat traten bei "Wetten, dass...?" auf, ließen Hunderttausende von West-Mark nach Ost-Berlin fließen. Im Gegenzug durften Westkünstler wie Udo Lindenberg, Peter Maffay und Rio Reiser in der DDR spielen, rockten Die Toten Hosen semilegal in Ostkirchen. Es ging um Propaganda und Devisen, versteckte Botschaften, politische Manöver. Joachim Hentschel erzählt hier zum ersten Mal die ganze Geschichte dieser Zeit, spricht mit Zeitzeugen und beleuchtet die Hintergründe: Wer waren die Strippenzieher? Welche Rolle spielten Stasi, DDR-Kulturministerium und FDJ, westliche Plattenfirmen und Impresarios? Und wie viel trug der große Kulturhandel zur Wende von 1989 und zum Mauerfall bei?

    Abstract: "Gold, Festivals, and Music in Southeast Brazil: Sounding Portugueseness is a study of the musical legacy of the 18th century Brazilian gold rush that integrates ethnographic research of the main genres of former mining communities in Brazil -- from liturgical music in the style of European art music to Afro-Brazilian musical expressions. Its content and structure are informed by Norbert Elias' idea of the civilizing process, which is explored regarding its relevance in interpreting sociocultural processes and choreo-musical expressions in the small town Morro Vermelho. The book's innovative feature is its focus on a little-known area to non-Brazilian scholars,and its focus on the colonial and European heritage in Brazil. Morro Vermelho's cultural traditions have received relatively limited attention. The Catholic festival of Our Lady of Nazareth provides a setting for the documentation and analysis of the musical setting and is thus placed at the centre of the discussion. It leads through the vast writings on Brazilian identity and challenges the view on Brazilian-ness as constructed in terms of the mixing of races. Norbert Elias's concept of the "civilizing process" structures the book and is relevant for understanding the cultural sphere of the festival of Our Lady of Nazareth. The book combines discourses of Portugueseness with historical sources and observations from fieldwork and community building in the virtual world. The focus on the music to support social constructions of "Portugueseness" is supported with evidence from diverse data sources: music (literature and fieldwork recordings), original interviews, marketing materials and historical narratives. The combination of archival, ethnographic and bibliographic research methods attempts a seamless narrative.     Abstract: Seit Februar 2020 widmet sich ein interdisziplinärer Projektverbund in Sachsen gesellschaftlichen Erfahrungen und kulturellem Wandel im Osten Deutschlands und in Ostmitteleuropa vor und nach 1989. Vier Teilprojekte verschränken sich dabei unter dem gemeinsamen Begriff multipler Transformationen. Zur Theoretisierung ihrer handlungstheoretisch, praxeologischen Perspektive bedienen sich die Projektbearbeiter*innen gleichermaßen ethnografischer Methoden, Oral History, Teilnehmender Beobachtung und Quellenanalyse. Im Beitrag werden die theoretischen Vorüberlegungen ausgehend von der Transformationsforschung vorgestellt. Zwei volkskundlich-kulturwissenschaftlich geprägte Projekte gewähren darauffolgend erste Einblicke in den Wandel von alltäglicher Lebenswelten der Menschen: An der Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft der sorbischen Minderheit wird die Bedeutung kulturellen Erbes zwischen ethnischer Selbstvergewisserung und ökonomischer Inwertsetzung am Beispiel der Band SERVI und des gleichnamigen Verlags aufgezeigt. Am Beispiel der Margarethenhütte in Großdubrau werden neue Vergemeinschaftungsformen auf Basis ehemaliger VEB-Mitarbeiter*innen beleuchtet, die nach 1989 einen neuen Umgang mit sozialem Erbe suchten. Dabei wird deutlich, dass interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit an Querschnittsthemen wie solchen des Umgangs mit verschiedenen Formen von Erbe für die Betrachtung multipler Transformationen ausgehend vom institutionellen Wandel 1989/90 fruchtbar werden kann.
    Abstract: In February 2020, an interdisciplinary project cluster in Saxony, Germany, commenced research into societal experience and cultural change in East Germany and East-Central Europe before and after 1989. The cluster is comprised of four research projects within the broader theoretical framework of ‘multiple transformations’, with all projects utilising a practice-based perspective. The case studies draw on ethnography, participant observation, oral history and source analysis. In this paper, we discuss the concept of ‘multiple transformations’ and present two of our projects on the changes in everyday life in this period. The first, on the culture and creative industries of the Sorbian minority in Saxony and Brandenburg, shows the significance of cultural heritage for the self-determination of this group and the deployment of heritage for economic purposes, using the examples of the band SERVI and the publisher of the same name. The second project, on the former state-owned enterprise Margarethenhütte in Großdubrau, Saxony, illustrates the emergence of community-building organisations after the termination of work-based community structures in 1989, which have since aimed to preserve labour heritage. Together, these projects show the significance of practices and processes of heritage in different forms across our studies of ‘multiple transformations’ after the institutional changes of 1989/90. The paper demonstrates that interdisciplinary collaboration on these themes has particular potential for the study of this period.

    Abstract: "On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence via a makeshift wired loudspeaker system to thousands of listeners in Hanoi. Five days later, Ho's Viet Minh forces set up a clandestine radio station using equipment brought to Southeast Asia by colonial traders. The revolutionaries garnered support for their coalition on air by interspersing political narratives with red music (nhạc đỏ). Voice of Vietnam Radio (VOV) grew from these communist and colonial foundations to become contemporary Vietnam's largest producer of music. In the first comprehensive English-language study on the history of radio music in mainland Southeast Asia, Lonán Ó Briain examines the broadcast voices that reconfigured Vietnam's cultural, social, and political landscape over a century. Ó Briain draws on a year of ethnographic fieldwork at the VOV studios (2016-17), interviews with radio employees and listeners, historical recordings and broadcasts, and archival research in Vietnam, France, and the United States. From the Indochinese radio clubs of the 1920s to the 75th anniversary celebrations of the VOV in 2020, Voices of Vietnam offers a fresh perspective on this turbulent period by demonstrating how music production and sound reproduction are integral to the unyielding process of state formation"--

    Abstract: "Ralph Ellison famously characterized ensemble jazz improvisation as "antagonistic cooperation." Both collaborative and competitive, musicians play with and against one another to create art and community. In Antagonistic Cooperation, Robert G. O'Meally shows how this idea runs throughout twentieth-century African American culture to provide a new history of Black creativity and aesthetics. From the collages of Romare Bearden and paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat to the fiction of Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison to the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, O'Meally explores how the worlds of African American jazz, art, and literature have informed one another. He argues that these artists drew on the improvisatory nature of jazz and the techniques of collage not as a way to depict a fractured or broken sense of Blackness but rather to see the Black self as beautifully layered and complex. They developed a shared set of methods and motives driven by the belief that art must involve a sense of community. O'Meally's readings of these artists and their work emphasize how they have not only contributed to understanding of Black history and culture but also provided hope for fulfilling the broken promises of American democracy"--

    Abstract: As the art that calls most attention to temporality, music provides us with profound insight into the nature of time, and time equally offers us one of the richest lenses through which to interrogate musical practice and thought. In this volume, musical time, arrayed across a spectrum of genres and performance/compositional contexts is explored from a multiplicity of perspectives. The contributions to the volume all register the centrality of time to our understanding of music and music-making and offer perspectives on time in music, particularly though not exclusively attending to contemporary forms of musical work. In sharing insights drawn from philosophy, music theory, ethnomusicology, psychology of performance and cultural studies, the book articulates a range of understandings on the metrics, politics and socialities woven into musical time.
