    Abstract: As children, many of us learn to sing, 'If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.' But despite the familiarity of this tune, few of us realize that what we're singing is actually part of a pervasive - and centuries-old - musical scheme. This particular scheme, dubbed the 'Sweet Thing,' has generated a large group of songs spanning a broad range of topics, genres, and time periods, but all related through a specific stanzaic form. Early twentieth-century blues songs 'My Babe' and 'Motherless Children,' country songs 'Peg and Awl' and 'Crawdad Song,' and gospel songs 'Pure Religion' and 'This Train' use this form, along with popular songs like Ray Charles's 'I Got a Woman,' The Beatles's 'One After 909,' and the Velvet Underground's 'I'm Waiting for the Man.' Sweet Thing: The History and Musical Structure of a Shared American Vernacular Form studies one of the most productive and enduring shared musical resources in North American vernacular music. Author Nicholas Stoia offers the most comprehensive examination to date of the 'Sweet Thing's' long history, exploring how it made its way from sixteenth-century Scotland to eighteenth-century British broadside ballads to nineteenth-century American ragtime. Stoia also examines the form in various contexts, including early blues and country music, and moving forward to rhythm and blues, soul, and rock music, connecting these modern forms to their ancient roots. Through this close look at a ubiquitous musical from, Sweet Thing shows us how it has linked listeners and musicians alike across the boundaries of genre, race, and even time.

    Abstract: Where Ideas Go to Die explores the troubled relationship of US journalism and intellect. A defender of common sense, the press is irked at intellect yet often dependent on its critical autonomy. The social control of intellect by journalism is accompanied by social control of journalism in newsrooms and in classrooms where norms are cultivated. Anti-intellectualism consequently operates like dark matter in media, a presence inferred by its effects rather than directly observed or acknowledged. When journalists anticipate a punitive public, the reified resentment is no more real than the fiction of omnipotent citizens in democratic theory, yet the audience imagined compels how intellect is rendered in the news as nuisance, deviance, or object of ridicule. Interviews with 25 "dangerous professors" demonstrate how alliances in the academic-media nexus can seed intellect in newswork.

    Abstract: Sex Scene suggests that what we have come to understand as the sexual revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s was actually a media revolution. In lively essays, the contributors examine a range of mass media-film and television, recorded sound, and publishing-that provide evidence of the circulation of sex in the public sphere, from the mainstream to the fringe. They discuss art films such as I am Curious (Yellow), mainstream movies including Midnight Cowboy, sexploitation films such as Mantis in Lace, the emergence of erotic film festivals and of gay pornography, the use of multimedia in sex education, and the sexual innuendo of The Love Boat. Scholars of cultural studies, history, and media studies, the contributors bring shared concerns to their diverse topics. They highlight the increasingly fluid divide between public and private, the rise of consumer and therapeutic cultures, and the relationship between identity politics and individual rights. The provocative surveys and case studies in this nuanced cultural history reframe the "sexual revolution" as the mass sexualization of our mediated world.Contributors.     Abstract: Die Geschichte schwarzer Modetänze wird bislang meist augenzwinkernd als ansteckendes Tanzfieber verhandelt. Doch nicht mysteriöse Erreger, sondern handfeste politische Konflikte um Bürgerschaft, Arbeitsteilung und Geschlechterverhältnisse waren ihre Grundlage. Die Ästhetik der schwarzen Diaspora machte diese Konflikte auf den Tanzflächen neu verhandelbar. Tanztechnik verbündete sich dabei mit Medientechniken, die ebenfalls mit Bewegung, Wahrnehmung und der Möglichkeit von Verwandlung experimentierten. Astrid Kusser geht dieser Geschichte zwischen New York, Buenos Aires, Kapstadt, Viktoria in Kamerun und Berlin nach.
