Politicized motherhood persists, and motherhood continues to inspire women's participation and direct their concerns. In The Political Consequences of Motherhood, Jill S. Greenlee investigates the complex relationship between motherhood and women's political attitudes. Combining a historical overview of the ways motherhood has been used for political purposes with recent political opinion surveys and individual-level analysis, she explains how and when motherhood shapes women's thoughts and preferences.     Abstract: In this paper, I argue that linguistics is a historical science in more than one sense: Not only is the object, language, embedded in time, but so is the study of it. This has consequences for our conception of language change. A central result of previous sociolinguistic analyses of spoken Copenhagen Danish, starting with Brink & Lund 1975, is that during the latter half of the 19th century the common European low back vowel (a) was differentiated in the Copenhagen speech community into at least four different vowel qualities all of them bearing both linguistic and sociolinguistic information. I present evidence from an unbroken chain of Copenhagen informants ranging from birth years 1905 until 1962-71. Various sections of this sample have been studied by different researchers using auditory classification of variants, and the total sample has been coded once more by the LANCHART centre. The analysis shows that auditory coding reveals the same patterns of differences between sociologically characterized groups but the relative figures classified as belonging to the various variants diverge quite dramatically and seem to be dependent on the age of the coder and the point in time at which the coding takes place. I suggest explanations for these facts and discuss whether this is a problem for the validity of sociolinguistic research or perhaps an inescapable condition for research within the language sciences.

    Abstract: Misunderstanding is a pervasive phenomenon in social life, sometimes with serious consequences for people's life chances. Misunderstandings are especially hazardous in high-stakes events such as job interviews or in the legal system. In unequal power encounters, unsuccessful communication is regularly attributed to the less powerful participant, especially when those participants are members of an ethnic minority group. But even when communicative events are not prestructured by participants' differential positions in social hierarchies, misunderstandings occur at different levels of interactional and social engagement. Misunderstanding in Social Life examines such problematic talk in ordinary conversation and different institutional settings, including socializing events and story tellings, education and assessment activities, and interviews in TV news broadcasts, employment agencies, legal settings, and language testing. The analyzed interactions are located in a variety of sociocultural environments and conducted in a range of languages, including English, French, German, Hebrew, Japanese, such language varieties as Aboriginal Australian English and Maori New Zealand English, and nonnative varieties. The original studies included in this volume adopt a variety of theoretical perspectives, including discourse-pragmatic approaches, conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, social constructionism, tropological and narrative analysis. They represent multiple views of misunderstanding as a multilayered discourse event.

Die zutreffende Bewertung ihrer Rolle setzt eine umfassende Bestandsaufnahme und den Vergleich ihrer Erscheinungsformen voraus. Die hiermit vorgelegte Bestandsaufnahme berücksichtigt ausgehend von den Märchen und Sagen des Altertums, des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit auch das europäische und das deutsche Kunstmärchen. Über 140 ausgewertete Sammelwerke dürften einen repräsentativen Überblick ermöglicht haben. Populäre Erzählungen fast aller Zeiten und Völker, insbesondere aber Märchen, schildern Zerstückelungen von Menschen und Tieren, vor allem Enthauptungen, was zu intensiven Diskussionen über die Zuträglichkeit solcher Themen nicht nur für Kinder führt. Die bisherigen Deutungen des Phänomens werden gesichtet, ergänzt und erweitert. Als wesentliche Funktionen schneidender und stechender Geräte kommen die des schlichten Werkzeuges in Betracht, die des Verbrechenswerkzeuges, aber auch – nicht selten als Teil einer magischen Dreiheit – die als Träger dieser Magie, als Brücke in das Reich des Jenseitigen und nicht zuletzt als Manifestation des Unbewussten. Linien in die Gegenwart volkstümlicher Literatur schließen die Gesamtschau ab.

All the papers are anchored in instrumental empirical data analysis. The volume provides a welcome contribution to the field for anyone interested in Cognitive Linguistics and its new developments.     Abstract: Language not only expresses identities but also constructs them. Starting from that point, Language and Identity examines the interrelationships between language and identities. It finds that they are so closely interwoven, that words themselves are inscribed with ideological meanings. Words and language constitute meanings within discourses and discourses vary in power. The powerful ones reproduce more powerful meanings, colonize other discourses and marginalize or silence the least powerful languages and cultures. Language and culture death occur in extreme cases of marginalization. This book also demonstrates the socio-economic opportunities offered by language choice and the cultural allegiances of language, where groups have been able to create new lives for themselves by embracing new languages in new countries. Language can be a 'double-edged sword' of opportunity and marginalization. Language and Identity argues that bilingualism and in some cases multilingualism can both promote socio-economic opportunity and combat culture death and marginalization. With sound theoretical perspectives drawing upon the work of Bakhtin, Vygotsky, Gumperz, Foucault and others, this book provides readers with a rationale to redress social injustice in the world by supporting minority linguistic and cultural identities and an acknowledgement that access to language can provide opportunity.

    Abstract: Benedict Anderson hat im Zusammenhang mit der Entstehung nationaler Gebilde das erfolgreiche Konzept der imagined communities geprägt. Die Schaffung einer nationalen Sprache, einer Ursprungslegende und einer Erinnerungskultur ermöglicht die Konstitution eines Feldes der nationalen Zeit. Diesem zeitlichen Feld entspricht auch ein räumliches. So wurden nationale Formationen im europäischen Raum immer wieder auf bestimmte Landschaftstypologien zurückgeführt. Aufgrund seines diskursiv-medialen Ansatzes geraten bei Anderson landschaftliche Phänomene jedoch erst gar nicht in den Blick. Rainer Guldin schließt diese theoretische Lücke hier exemplarisch für den deutschen Sprachraum. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei Prozesse der Metaphorisierung, denen auch Simon Schama in seinem Buch über Landschaft und Gedächtnis nachgegangen ist.

    Abstract: This volume provides a detailed analysis of language contact in North Africa and explores the historical presence of the languages used in the region, including the different varieties of Arabic and Berber as well as European languages. Using a wide range of data sets, it provides a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms of language contact under classical diglossia and societal bilingualism, examining multiple cases of oral and written code-switching. It also describes contact-induced lexical and structural change in such situations and discusses the possible appearance of new varieties within the context of diglossia. Examples from past diglossic situations are examined, including the situation in Muslim Spain and the Maltese Islands. An analysis of the current situation of Arabic vernaculars, not only in the Maghreb but also in other Arabic-speaking areas, is also presented.     Abstract: This book sheds new light on the problem of how the human mind evolved. Harry Smit argues that current studies of this problem misguidedly try to solve it by using variants of the Cartesian conception of the mind, and shows that combining the Aristotelian conception with Darwin's theory provides us with far more interesting answers. He discusses the core problem of how we can understand language evolution in terms of inclusive fitness theory, and investigates how scientific and conceptual insights can be integrated into one explanatory framework, which he contrasts with the alternative Cartesian-derived framework. He then explores the differences between these explanatory frameworks with reference to co-operation and conflict at different levels of biological organization, the evolution of communicative behaviour, the human mind, language, and moral behaviour.
