    Abstract: This collection of essays explores the complex relations between Christians and Muslims at the dawn of the modern age. It begins by examining two seminal works by Nicholas of Cusa: De pace fidei, a dialogue seeking peace among world religions written after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, and Cribratio Alkorani (1460-61), an attempt to confirm Gospel truths through a critical reading of the Qur'an. After considering Nicholas, his sources, and his context, the book explores a wider range of late medieval texts on Christian-Muslim relations-not only Christian writings about Islam but also Muslim responses to Christianity. The book's focus is historical, but it can also contribute to efforts at increasing Muslim-Christian understanding today

Some of the key questions addressed here include whether sacred law operates differently from secular law, why laws change or stay the same and how different cultural and historical settings impact the development of legal rulings. In order to explore these questions, the author examines the decisions of thirty jurists from the largest legal tradition in Islam: the Hanafi school of law. He traces their rulings on the question of women and communal prayer across a very broad period of time - from the eighth to the eighteenth century - to demonstrate how jurists interpreted the law and reconciled their decisions with the scripture and the sayings of the Prophet.     Abstract: Inspired by a critical reconsideration of current monolithic approaches to the study of Greek religion, this book argues that ancient Greeks displayed a disquieting capacity to validate two (or more) dissonant, if not contradictory, representations of the divine world in a complementary rather than mutually exclusive manner. From this perspective the six chapters explore problems inherent in: order vs. variety/chaos in polytheism, arbitrariness vs. justice in theodicy, the peaceful co-existence of mono- and polytheistic theologies, human traits in divine imagery, divine omnipotence vs. limitat

    Abstract: Wie sollen wir leben? Worin besteht das Glück? In der flüchtigen Moderne wollen wir mit solchen Fragen am liebsten gar nicht behelligt werden. Wir wissen schliesslich genau, worauf es ankommt: Mehr Geld heisst mehr Glück, und jeder einzelne ist für seinen Erfolg und sein Scheitern selbst verantwortlich. Zugleich stürzt uns die Frage in bodenlose Ratlosigkeit, denn worin wir morgen unser Glück erblicken werden, scheint völlig unvorhersehbar. Dass eine Orientierung trotzdem möglich ist, zeigt der grosse Essayist Zygmunt Bauman, indem er Klassiker der Philosophie auf ihre Botschaften für die unmittelbare Gegenwart hin abklopft. Wenn wir Heutigen, so sein Fazit, schon gezwungen sind, unser Leben als Kunstwerk zu betrachten, uns permanent zu verändern und neu zu definieren, dann können wir die Anleitungen der Moral und Ethik zwar ausschlagen, den Konsequenzen unseres Handelns aber trotz allem nicht entkommen

    Abstract: "The international community created the Special Court for Sierra Leone to prosecute those who bore the greatest responsibility for crimes committed during the country's devastating civil war. Tim Kelsall examines some of the challenges posed by the fact that the Court operated in a largely unfamiliar culture, in which the way local people thought about rights, agency and truth-telling sometimes differed radically from the way international lawyers think about these things. By applying an anthro-political perspective to the trials, he unveils a variety of ethical, epistemological, jurisprudential and procedural problems, arguing that although touted as a promising hybrid, the Court failed in crucial ways to adapt to the local culture concerned.
