    Abstract: Arguing that demographic thought begins not with quantification but in attempts to control the qualities of people, Human Empire traces two transformations spanning the early modern period. First was the emergence of population as an object of governance through a series of engagements in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, Ireland, and colonial North America, influenced by humanist policy, reason of state, and natural philosophy, and culminating in the creation of political arithmetic. Second was the debate during the long eighteenth century over the locus and limits of demographic agency, as church, civil society, and private projects sought to mobilize and manipulate different marginalized and racialized groups - and as American colonists offered their own visions of imperial demography. This innovative, engaging study examines the emergence of population as an object of knowledge and governance and connects the history of demographic ideas with their early modern intellectual, political, and colonial contexts

    Abstract: Our conception of the culture and values of the ancient Greco-Roman world is largely based on texts and material evidence left behind by a small and atypical group of city-dwellers. The people of the deep Mediterranean countryside seldom appear in the historical record from antiquity, and almost never as historical actors. This book is the first extended historical ethnography of an ancient village society, based on an extraordinarily rich body of funerary and propitiatory inscriptions from a remote upland region of Roman Asia Minor. Rural kinship structures and household forms are analysed in detail, as are the region's demography, religious life, gender relations, class structure, normative standards and values. Roman north-east Lydia is perhaps the only non-urban society in the Greco-Roman world whose culture can be described at so fine-grained a level of detail: a world of tight-knit families, egalitarian values, hard agricultural labour, village solidarity, honour, piety and love

Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Lahore, Pakistan, Governing Thirdness provides important insights about the identity, marginalization and governance of the Khawaja Sira as they try to live an unliveable life. Taking a broad view of governance, this book includes a comprehensive analysis of governance of the Khawaja Sira across legal, social and administrative institutions. It also argues that labels like third gender and transgender fails to account for the gender fluid lives and multiple types of individuals who identify as Khawaja Sira, yet these categories, largely imported from the west, are used without much thought to govern this heterogeneous group

    Abstract: How do memory and remembrance relate to the specific mode of transitional justice that lays emphasis on restoration? What is captured and what is obliterated in individual and collective efforts to come to terms with a violent past? Across this volume consisting of twelve in-depth contributions, the politics of memory in various countries are related to restorative justice under four headings: restoring trust, restoring truth, restoring land and restoring law. While the primary focus is a philosophical one, authors also engage in incisive analyses of historical, political and/or legal developments in their chosen countries. Drawing on politics, popular culture, psychoanalysis, and more, Alexander-Floyd examines our conflicting ideas, opinions, and narratives about Black women, showing how they are equally revered and reviled as an embodiment of good and evil, cast either as victims or villains, citizens or outsiders. Ultimately, Alexander-Floyd showcases the complex experiences of Black women as political subjects. At a time of extreme racial tension, Re-Imagining Black Women provides insight into the parts that Black women play, and are expected to play, in politics and popular culture

    Abstract: American political observers express increasing concern about affective polarization, i.e., partisans' resentment toward political opponents. We advance debates about America's partisan divisions by comparing affective polarization in the US over the past 25 years with affective polarization in 19 other western publics. We conclude that American affective polarization is not extreme in comparative perspective, although Americans' dislike of partisan opponents has increased more rapidly since the mid-1990s than in most other Western publics. We then show that affective polarization is more intense when unemployment and inequality are high; when political elites clash over cultural issues such as immigration and national identity; and in countries with majoritarian electoral institutions. Our findings situate American partisan resentment and hostility in comparative perspective, and illuminate correlates of affective polarization that are difficult to detect when examining the American case in isolation

    Abstract: In the Middle Ages everyone, it seems, entered into some form of marriage. Nuns - and even some monks - married the bridegroom Christ. Bishops married their sees. The popes, as vicars of Christ, married the universal Church. And lay people, high and low, married each other. What united these marriages was their common reference to the union of Christ and Church. Christ's marriage to the Church was the paradigmatic symbol in which all the other forms of union participated, in superior or inferior ways. This book grapples with questions of the impact of marriage symbolism on both ideas and practice in the early Christian and medieval period. In what ways did marriage symbolism - with its embedded concepts of gender, reproduction, household, and hierarchy - shape people's thought about other things, such as celibacy, ecclesial and political relations, and devotional relations? How did symbolic cognition shape marriage itself? And how, if at all, were these two directions of thinking symbolically about marriage related?

    Abstract: Though the Beatles are nowadays considered national treasures, this book shows how and why they inspired phobia as well as mania in 1960s Britain. As symbols of modernity in the early sixties, they functioned as a stress test for British institutions and identities, at once displaying the possibilities and establishing the limits of change. Later in the decade, they developed forms of living, loving, thinking, looking, creating, worshipping and campaigning which became subjects of intense controversy. The ambivalent attitudes contemporaries displayed towards the Beatles are not captured in hackneyed ideas of the 'swinging sixties', the 'permissive society' and the all-conquering 'Fab Four'. Drawing upon a wealth of contemporary sources, The Beatles and Sixties Britain offers a new understanding of the band as existing in creative tension with postwar British society: their disruptive presence inciting a wholesale re-examination of social, political and cultural norms

    Abstract: Als Reaktion auf die Kolonialisierung weiter Teile der islamischen Welt durch westliche Mächte entstand eine neue geistige Strömung, die besonders darauf bedacht war, den Islam den modernen Zeiten anzupassen. Dieser Reformdiskurs erfasste alle Teile der islamischen Welt und man diskutierte vielerorts die Frage einer Reformfähigkeit des Islams. Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich mit dem tunesischen Reformdenker at-Tahir al-Haddad (1899-1935), der der islamwissenschaftlichen Forschung trotz seines langjährigen Wirkens bislang unbekannt geblieben ist, und seinem Werk "Die tunesische Frau in Gesetz und Gesellschaft". Mit diesem Werk verfolgte al-Haddad die Absicht, hinsichtlich der Frauenproblematik die traditionelle tunesische in eine moderne Gesellschaft umzuformen. Er löste damit jedoch eine Welle der Empörung und Ablehnung aus, die sich auf dramatische Weise auf sein Leben auswirken sollte. Erst zwei Jahrzehnte nach seinem Tod konnten die Gedanken des verkannten Reformers auf die Gestaltung der tunesischen Gesellschaft Einfluss nehmen.

    Abstract: In Deutschland leben zahlreiche Musiker*innen aus der Türkei, die in ihrem Herkunftsland aus politischen Gründen nicht uneingeschränkt leben und musizieren könnten. Sie verließen die Türkei aufgrund des Militärputsches von 1980, der Diskriminierung ihrer kurdischen und/oder alevitischen Identität oder des gescheiterten Gezi-Protests und erneuter Einschränkungen von Minderheitsgruppierungen im Musikleben. Kirsten Seidlitz untersucht, wie sie von Deutschland aus mit ihrem musikalischen Schaffen politisch kommentieren, inwiefern die deutsche Gesellschaft mit Musik erreicht, aufgeklärt und beeinflusst werden kann, und ob die in Deutschland produzierte Musik zurück in die Türkei gelangt.

    Abstract: Die Entstehung der Soziologie lässt sich durch die berühmte Forderung Émile Durkheims zusammenfassen: Soziales nur durch Soziales erklären. Ihre Geschichte ist also mit dem Versprechen verknüpft, die soziale Wirklichkeit unter Ausschluss alles Nicht-Sozialen zu erforschen - womit die Perspektive auf den Menschen verdrängt wird. Doch kann der Mensch aus der Soziologie überhaupt verdrängt werden? Rafael Alvear Moreno reflektiert diese Frage in Hinblick auf die Beschreibung der Motive und Konsequenzen des genannten Versprechens anhand der Großtheorien von Jürgen Habermas und Niklas Luhmann. Seine Untersuchung wird dabei von der dialektischen Figur durchkreuzt, dass es keine Verdrängung ohne Einbeziehung gibt - was unmittelbar in eine soziologische Anthropologie führt

    Abstract: This interdisciplinary study explores how classical ideals of generosity influenced the writing and practice of gift giving in medieval Europe. In assuming that medieval gift giving was shaped by oral 'folk models', historians have traditionally followed in the footsteps of social anthropologists and sociologists such as Marcel Mauss and Pierre Bourdieu. This first in-depth investigation into the influence of the classical ideals of generosity and gift giving in medieval Europe reveals to the contrary how historians have underestimated the impact of classical literature and philosophy on medieval culture and ritual. Focusing on the idea of the gift expounded in the classical texts read most widely in the Middle Ages, including Seneca the Younger's De beneficiis and Cicero's De officiis, Lars Kjær investigates how these ideas were received, adapted and utilised by medieval writers across a range of genres, and how they influenced the practice of generosity

    Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit folgt Foucault in der Annahme, dass der zoologische Garten eine Heterotopie, ein Anderer Raum ist. Dies führte zur Forschungsfrage, wodurch er sich zu einem solchen Raum konstituiert, wie er sich als solcher produziert und reproduziert, durch wen oder was und wie er hergestellt wird und welche Funktionen er in der Gesellschaft erfüllt. Diese Arbeit untersucht den Anderen Raum primär im Zoo Zürich und im Tiergarten Schönbrunn. Hier gibt es Regenwaldhallen, die eigenständige Ökosysteme simulieren. Sie bündeln heterotopische Eigenschaften der Zoos wie unter einem Brennglas. Für die explorative Annäherung an die Heterotopie Zoo bot sich die ethnographische Methode an. Ihre vielfältigen Forschungserträge bilden den Kern dieser Arbeit; gerahmt werden sie von einer historischen Darstellung zoologischer Gärten und von raumsoziologischen Betrachtungen. Gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen schrieben sich in den letzten sechzig Jahren deutlich in die Heterotopie Zoo ein. Sie ist seither wirkmächtige Teilnehmerin an diesen Prozessen und bestimmt gesellschaftliche Werte mit. Mit ihren Aktivitäten wirkt sie in den Rest-Raum hinein, so dass eine wechselseitige Beeinflussung stattfindet.

Three analytical approaches are introduced and compared, describing a wide range of texts from the perspectives of register, genre, and style. Focusing on the postcolonial settlement of the Atlantic frontier and Rio de Janeiro, Miki argues that the exclusion and inequality of indigenous and African-descended people became embedded in the very construction of Brazil's remarkably inclusive nationhood. On the one hand, many Americans support the creation of a powerful bureaucracy of coercion made up of police and military forces in order to provide public security. At the same time, many of those citizens also demand the private right to protect their own families, home, and property. This book diagnoses this schizophrenia as a product of a distinctive institutional history, in which private forms of violence - vigilantes, private detectives, mercenary gunfighters - emerged in concert with the creation of new public and state forms of violence such as police departments or the National Guard. This dual public and private face of American violence resulted from the upending of a tradition of republican governance, in which public security had been indistinguishable from private effort, by the nineteenth-century social transformations of the Civil War and the Market Revolution

    Abstract: Why do Americans have such animosity for people who identify with the opposing political party? Jaime E. Settle argues that in the context of increasing partisan polarization among American political elites, the way we communicate on Facebook uniquely facilitates psychological polarization among the American public. Frenemies introduces the END Framework of social media interaction. END refers to a subset of content that circulates in a social media ecosystem: a personalized, quantified blend of politically informative 'expression', 'news', and 'discussion' seamlessly interwoven into a wider variety of socially informative content. Scrolling through the News Feed triggers a cascade of processes that result in negative attitudes about those who disagree with us politically. The inherent features of Facebook, paired with the norms of how people use the site, heighten awareness of political identity, bias the inferences people make about others' political views, and foster stereotyped evaluations of the political out-group

    Abstract: The family is a major area of scholarly research and public debate. Many studies have explored the English family in the 16th and 17th centuries, focusing on husbands and wives, parents and children. 'The Ties that Bind' explores in depth the other key dimension: the place of brothers and sisters in family life, and in society. Moralists urged mutual love and support between siblings, but recognized that sibling rivalry was a common and potent force. The widespread practice of primogeniture made England distinctive. The eldest son inherited most of the estate and with it, a moral obligation to advance the welfare of his brothers and sisters.     Abstract: This is a revolutionary reinterpretation of the French past from the early fifteenth century to the establishment of the Third Republic, focused on public challenges and defenses of masculine hierarchy in relations between women and men. Karen Offen surveys heated exchanges around women's 'influence'; their exclusion from 'authority'; the increasing prominence of biomedical thinking and population issues; concerns about education, intellect, and the sexual politics of knowledge; and the politics of women's work. Initially, the majority of commentators were literate and influential men. However, as more and more women attained literacy, they too began to analyze their situation in print and to contest men's claims about who women were and should be, and what they should be restrained from doing, and why. As urban print culture exploded and revolutionary ideas of 'equality' fuelled women's claims for emancipation, this question resonated throughout francophone Europe and, ultimately, across the seas
