    Abstract: "Seit etwa 150 Jahren gibt es die Religionsgemeinschaft Jehovas Zeugen in Europa. Ihr Weg in den einzelnen Ländern war auch davon abhängig, wie diese missionierende Gemeinschaft von der Mehrheit der Andersgläubigen, der Staatsmacht und den etablierten Kirchen behandelt wurde. Insofern ist die Geschichte von Jehovas Zeugen in Europa auch eine Geschichte über die gesellschaftliche Verfasstheit dieser Länder - deren Bereitschaft, religiöse Minderheiten zu akzeptieren und zu integrieren. Nicht nur in Diktaturen, sondern auch in manchen demokratischen Staaten erlebten Jehovas Zeugen Unterdrückung und Verfolgung, in anderen konnten sie sich relativ frei entfalten. Wie sich die unterschiedlichen Verhältnisse auf die Religionsgemeinschaft in der jeweiligen nationalen Gesellschaft auswirkten und welche Herausforderungen - zum Teil bis in die Gegenwart - Jehovas Zeugen zu bestehen hatten und noch haben, ist das Thema dieser auf drei Bände angelegten Studie."

Das bunte Gewirk ausgewählter Texte aus der »Bernischen kantonalen Irrenanstalt Waldau« aus dem Zeitraum 1895-1936 ist die Grundlage dieser Studie, die den 'Schreib-Ort Waldau' ersichtlich werden lässt.Die plurilaterale Betrachtung umfasst so berühmte Patienten der Anstalt wie Adolf Wölfli, Friedrich Glauser und Robert Walser, aber auch Texte unbekannter Schreibender. Sie zeigt auf, wie durch den performativen Akt des Schreibens die Klinik erst sicht- und lesbar wird und dadurch die Bedingungen geschaffen - aber auch thematisiert - werden, die ein weiteres Schreiben im Setting einer geschlossenen Anstalt prägen

Die hier analysierten Lebensgeschichten ihrer Einwohner_innen werfen Schlaglichter auf europäische Diskurse über soziale und politische Partizipation sowie auf individuelle und kollektive Identitätsbildung.

    Abstract: "Immigrant Faith examines trends and patterns relating to religion in the lives of immigrants. The volume moves beyond specific studies of particular faiths in particular immigrant destinations to present the religious lives of immigrants in the United States, Canada, and Europe on a broad scale. Religion is not merely one aspect among many in immigrant lives. Immigrant faith affects daily interactions, shapes the future of immigrants in their destination society, and influences society beyond the immigrants themselves. In other words, to understand immigrants, one must understand their faith. Drawing on census data and other surveys, including data sources from several countries and statistical data from thousands of immigrant interviews, the volume provides a concise overview of immigrant religion. It sheds light on whether religion shapes the choice of destination for migrants, if immigrants are more or less religious after migrating, if religious immigrants have an easier adjustment, or if religious migrants tend to fare better or worse economically than non-religious migrants. Immigrant Faith covers demographic trends from initial migration to settlement to the transmission of faith to the second generation. It offers the perfect introduction to big picture patterns of immigrant religion for scholars and students, as well as religious leaders and policy makers"--

Wie jedoch wirken sich diese negativen Stereotype auf das Alltagsleben und die Identitätskonstruktionen der Betroffenen aus? Am Beispiel deutsch-marokkanischer Interviewpartner_innen weist Maike Didero nach, dass divergierende Reaktionen auf das deutsche Islambild durch unterschiedliche translokale Positionierungen erklärt werden können. Ihre Studie präsentiert auf Grundlage der Subjekttheorien von Laclau/Mouffe, Butler und Bourdieu ein innovatives Konzept zur Analyse von narrativen Identitäten als performative Praxis
    Abstract: From 9/11 to the Sarrazin debate: that German Muslims are now confronted with a negative image is evident. Maike Didero asks how these negative stereotypes affect the everyday life and identity construction of those involved. Using the example of German-Moroccan interviewees, she shows that divergent reactions are due to different trans-local positioning. Based on the theories of the subject of Laclau/Mouffe, Butler, and Bourdieu, an innovative approach to the analysis of narrative identities is presented here as a performative practice

Hatzaad Harishon ("The First Step") was a New York-based, multiracial Jewish organization that worked to increase recognition and legitimacy of black Jews in the sixties and seventies. In Stepping into Zion, Janice W. Fernheimer examines the history and archives of Hatzaad Harishon to illuminate the definition and borders of Jewish identity, which have critical relevance to Jews of all traditions as well as to non-Jews. Fernheimer focuses on a period when white Jewish identity was in flux and deeply influenced by the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. In 1964, white and black Jews formed Hatzaad Harishon to foster interaction and unity between black and white Jewish communities. They raised the question of who or what constitutes Jewishness or Jewish identity, and in searching for an answer succeeded-both historically and rhetorically-in gaining increased recognition for black Jews. Fernheimer traces how members of Hatzaad Harishon, who did not share the same set of definitions, were able to create common ground in a process she terms "interruptive invention." Through insightful interpretation of Hatzaad Harishon's archival materials, Fernheimer chronicles the group's successes and failures within the larger rhetorical history of conflicts that emerge when cultural identities shift or expand.     Abstract: Die vorliegende Studie zeichnet auf der Basis bislang nur in Manuskriptform zugänglicher Quellen aus Kirchenarchiven in Aleppo und Damaskus einen Konflikt zwischen gesellschaftlichen Gruppen mit komplexen Profilen nach. Dafür werden miteinander verflochtene politische, wirtschaftliche und administrative Ursachen der Ereignisse analysiert, die mit in der Frühzeit der Tanzimat-Reformen initiierten Prozessen des Wandels verbunden waren.
    Abstract: Die Untersuchung richtet den Fokus insbesondere auf den städtischen Raum, der bedeutende historische Entwicklungen reflektiert, die wiederum auf ihn zurückwirken. Diese Perspektive ermöglicht es, eine Geschichte der Aleppiner Bevölkerung zu entwerfen, über die verfügbare Quellen meist schweigen.

The history of this region has commonly been explored through the lens of the major superpowers who competed over its territory in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including Britain, Russia, and China. Here, we are offered a comprehensive overview of the history of the Ismaili community in Tajikistan. Leadership and Authority in Central Asia identifies traditional forms of religious authority within the network of religious functionaries at a range of levels and discusses the functions of Ismaili political leaders as they have evolved through time. Skilfully applying an interdisciplinary approach -- drawing on historical sources, including unpublished materials, and ethnographic fieldwork data collected through interviews -- and a perceptive analysis of political theories of leadership in communist and post-communist societies, this book challenges the ways religious and secular categories have been distinguished in recent scholarship.     Abstract: "This book offers a comparative analysis of religious education and state policies towards religious education in seven different countries and in the European Union as a whole. Most of the cases studied have not been presented previously in the English speaking world. The comparative contextualization of the different countries studied here, Muslim majority, Orthodox Christian, Jewish and secular (or laic) is also new. The challenge addressed by the book's different studies, is quite simply if religious education can itself be a vehicle for civic enculturation and the creation of ties of belonging and meaningful solidarity across different ethnic and religious communities in the contemporary world. In many of the countries studied, the state and the program of state-making was associated with one religio-ethnic community and then the question remains if religious education that privileges that religious community can provide such shared terms of meaning for members of different communities. This is the challenge faced by such countries at Bulgaria, Israel, Malaysia and in a slightly different way (facing not religious diversity but ethnic difference), Turkey. The case of Cyprus, by contrast, is one of a country actually split along lines of ethno-religious difference. Additional studies of the connection between religious education and the terms of citizenship in the EU, France and the USA provide important contrasts to the challenges facing us as we seek to educate our citizenry in an age of religious resurgence and global politics"--

    Abstract: The apostle Paul deals extensively with gender, embodiment, and desire in his authentic letters, yet many of the contemporary philosophers interested in his work downplay these aspects of his thought. Christ Without Adam is the first book to examine the role of gender and sexuality in the turn to the apostle Paul in recent Continental philosophy. It builds a constructive proposal for embodied Christian theological anthropology in conversation withÑand in contrast toÑthe ÒPaulinismsÓ of Stanislas Breton, Alain Badiou, and Slavoj _i_ek. PaulÕs letters bequeathed a crucial anthropological aporia to the history of Christian thought, insofar as the apostle sought to situate embodied human beings typologically with reference to Adam and Christ, but failed to work out the place of sexual difference within this classification. As a result, the space between Adam and Christ has functioned historically as a conceptual and temporal interval in which Christian anthropology poses and re-poses theological dilemmas of embodied difference. This study follows the ways in which the appropriations of Paul by Breton, Badiou, and _i_ek have either sidestepped or collapsed this interval, a crucial component in their articulations of a universal Pauline subject. As a result, sexual difference fails to materialize in their readings as a problem with any explicit force. Against these readings, Dunning asserts the importance of the Pauline AdamÐChrist typology, not as a straightforward resource but as a witness to a certain necessary failureÑthe failure of the Christian tradition to resolve embodied difference without remainder. This failure, he argues, is constructive in that it reveals the instability of sexual difference, both masculine and feminine, within an anthropological paradigm that claims to be universal yet is still predicated on male bodies.

    Abstract: Kann es eine Islamfeindlichkeit ohne die Religion des Islam geben? Naime Cakir zeigt, dass nicht allein die Terroranschläge des 11. September 2001 für die zunehmenden antiislamischen Vorurteile und Feindbilder in Deutschland verantwortlich sind, sondern auch die Erkenntnis, dass die ehemaligen Gastarbeiter ihren Lebensmittelpunkt auf Dauer in die Bundesrepublik verlegt haben und nun für sich beanspruchen, Objekt von Verantwortung zu sein. Damit waren für die Residenzgesellschaft und für die Einwanderer die etablierten Rollen des Gastgebers und des Gastes irritiert. Die Studie zeichnet nach, wie der Islam zum Gegenstand öffentlicher Anerkennungskonflikte gemacht worden ist, da es einer Neujustierung der Rollen innerhalb des Gesellschaftsgefüges bedurfte, die die Marginalisierung der mittlerweile etablierten Einwanderer weiterhin zu gewährleisten hatte

    Abstract: Seit Ende der 1990er Jahre machen Naturwissenschaftler und Umweltschutzaktivisten die mit der Jagd verbundene Lebensweise der Inuit für den Rückgang einiger Tierpopulationen in Grönland verantwortlich. Jedoch: Indigene Völker nehmen im ökologischen Diskurs (noch) einen Sonderstatus ein, da ihnen zugeschrieben wird, dass sie einen ressourcenschonenden Umgang mit natürlichen Gütern aus der Tier- und Pflanzenwelt praktizieren.Schützenswerte Natur vs. grönländische Kollektividentität: Kalaalimernit - der grönländische Ausdruck für einheimisches Essen - wird zum umkämpften Terrain. Frank Sowa zeichnet nach, wie die globalen Modelle von »Natur«, »Indigenität« und »(National-)Kultur« zunehmend die Handlungsfähigkeit der lokalen Akteure strukturieren
    Abstract: Since the late 1990s, scientists and environmental activists have held the hunting lifestyle of the Inuit responsible for the decline of certain Greenlandic animal populations. However, indigenous peoples (still) receive special status in the ecological discourse, in that the practice of resource-efficient dealings with natural (animal- and plant-based) goods is attributed to them.Nature in need of protection clashes with Greenlandic collective identity as the Greenlandic expression for local food - Kalaalimernit - becomes a contested terrain.     Abstract: Was ist ein gutes Leben? Und vor allem: Wo und auf welche Weise lässt es sich gut leben? Diese Fragen untersucht Julia Rössel am Beispiel von Zugezogenen in der Uckermark. Sie beschreibt deren Weg zum guten Leben - vom Wunsch nach Veränderung bis zum dortigen Alltagsleben und dessen Reflexion. Durch eine enge Verzahnung von theoretischer und empirischer Arbeit entwickelt sie ein Konzept zur Produktion von Räumen des guten Lebens und eröffnet interessante Perspektiven für die Entwicklung peripherer Regionen. Darüber hinaus bietet die Studie einen empirischen Zugang zu Lefebvres Produktion von Raum, der auf der Ebene des Individuums ansetzt und gleichzeitig gesellschaftliche Aspekte nicht aus dem Blick verliert.

    Abstract: Kann es eine Islamfeindlichkeit ohne die Religion des Islam geben? Naime Cakir zeigt, dass nicht allein die Terroranschläge des 11. September 2001 für die zunehmenden antiislamischen Vorurteile und Feindbilder in Deutschland verantwortlich sind, sondern auch die Erkenntnis, dass die ehemaligen Gastarbeiter ihren Lebensmittelpunkt auf Dauer in die Bundesrepublik verlegt haben und nun für sich beanspruchen, Objekt von Verantwortung zu sein. Damit waren für die Residenzgesellschaft und für die Einwanderer die etablierten Rollen des Gastgebers und des Gastes irritiert. Die Studie zeichnet nach, wie der Islam zum Gegenstand öffentlicher Anerkennungskonflikte gemacht worden ist, da es einer Neujustierung der Rollen innerhalb des Gesellschaftsgefüges bedurfte, die die Marginalisierung der mittlerweile etablierten Einwanderer weiterhin zu gewährleisten hatte
