    Abstract: In a series of legal battles starting in 1882, South Asian Muslims made up of modernists, traditionalists, reformists, Shias and Sunnis attempted to modify the laws relating to their places of worship. Their efforts failed as the ideals they presented flew in the face of colonial secularism. This book looks at the legal history of Muslim endowments and the intellectual and social history of sectarian identities, demonstrating how these topics are interconnected in ways that affected the everyday lives of mosque congregants across North India.     Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich den macht- und identitätspolitischen Dimensionen kolonialer Verwaltungspraktiken im ehemaligen Schutzgebiet Deutsch-Südwestafrika und seiner Diamantabbaugebiete. Kernelement der Untersuchung stellen verschiedenste Primärquellen aus dem Bundesarchiv Lichterfelde dar. Anhand konkreter Schrifterzeugnisse kann so die Offenlegung komplexer Verflechtungen zwischen bürokratischer Regulationsmacht, institutioneller Gewalt, wirtschaftlichen Ausbeutungsstrukturen und persönlichen Schicksalen anschaulich erfolgen. Im Vordergrund der Analyse stehen die Nachzeichnung grober Entwicklungslinien und Funktionsweisen deutsch-südwestafrikanischer Verwaltungsbehörden sowie konkrete Repressionspraktiken. Anhand einzelner Dokumente der Diamantverordnung wird in diesem Zusammenhang deutlich, wie als sogenannte Eingeborene klassifizierte Menschen der Zugriff auf Erlaubnisscheine zum Schürfen von Diamanten kategorisch verwehrt und ihr bloßer Aufenthalt in den Abbaugebieten durch das Verwehren von Passierscheinen kriminalisiert wurde. Die Konstruktion von bürokratischen Identitätskategorien führte folglich zur räumlichen und sozialen Parzellierung in der Kolonie und produzierte sowie naturalisierte aktiv rassistische Ausschlussmechanismen.
    Abstract: This paper deals with aspects of power and identity politics in colonial administrative practices in the former German South-West Africa protectorate and its diamond mining areas. The core element of the study is a variety of primary sources from the Lichterfelde national archives. As a result, the complex inter-relationships between bureaucratic regulatory power, institutional violence, structures of economic exploitation and personal stories can be laid out in clear terms based on concrete written documents. The analysis foregrounds a retracing of the approximate development and functioning of administrative authorities in German South-West Africa as well as concrete practices of repression. Against this backdrop, individual documents from the Diamantverordnung (Diamond Ordinance) show clearly how persons classified as so-called Eingeborene, or indigenous people, were categorically denied access to diamond mining permits, and how their mere presence in the mining areas was criminalized by a refusal to grant them travel permits. The construction of bureaucratic categories of identity consequently led to a spatial and social partitioning within the colony and produced both naturalized and actively racist mechanisms of exclusion.

    Abstract: Reckoning with colonial legacies in Western museum collections What are the possibilities and limits of engaging with colonialism in ethnological museums? This book addresses this question from within the Africa department of the Ethnological Museum in Berlin. It captures the Museum at a moment of substantial transformation, as it prepared the move of its exhibition to the Humboldt Forum, a newly built and contested cultural centre on Berlin’s Museum Island. The book discusses almost a decade of debate in which German colonialism was negotiated, and further recognised, through conflicts over colonial museum collections. Based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork examining the Museum’s various work practices, this book highlights the Museum’s embeddedness in colonial logics and shows how these unfold in the Museum’s everyday activity. It addresses the diverse areas of expertise in the Ethnological Museum – the preservation, storage, curation, and research of collections – and also draws on archival research and oral history interviews with current and former employees. Working through Colonial Collections unravels the ongoing and laborious processes of reckoning with colonialism in the Ethnological Museum’s present – processes from which other ethnological museums, as well as Western museums more generally, can learn. With a preface by Sharon Macdonald.

    Abstract: Europe is often described as `flooded` by migrants or by Muslim `others,` with Western African men especially portrayed as a security risk. At the same time the intensified mobility of privileged people in the Global North is celebrated as creating an increasingly cosmopolitan world. This book looks critically at racialization of mobility in Europe, anchoring the discussion in the aspiration of precarious migrants from Niger in Belgium and Italy. Their voices show some of the contradictions in current discourses. The book contextualizes their experiences within the ongoing securitization of mobility in their home country and the persistent denial of racism and colonialism that seeks to secure the innocence of Europe.

    Abstract: This book explores how decolonization and decoloniality provide liberationist knowledge to question and replace the hegemony of Western knowledge systems imposed on Africa. It critically examines the silencing and exclusion of subalterns in global knowledge production and the far-reaching implications of this for pedagogy and policy. As global power is concentrated in the global north where Eurocentrism and white supremacy validate the monopoly of knowledge and its centrality and universality, African perspectives continue to be marginalized or excluded in research, creating the problem of misrepresentation of the continent. It is to this challenge that this book has responded-the urgent need to eliminate the vestiges of colonialism in the academy and research methodologies.Coloniality is seen not only as a historical phenomenon but also as an ethnocentric continuum, dominating all aspects of present life, especially monopolizing human epistemology, the threshold of human existence, and even development activities. This book provides a balanced overview of what a feasible decoloniality should be. It is all-inclusive, aggregating differing perspectives, including decolonial feminist and LGBTQ thought. It deploys a holistic approach that critiques the limitations to decoloniality, the impediments that culminated in the failure of the late 20th century struggle for decoloniality, and the problems associated with current African resistance to academic decoloniality.The book closes with a discussion of African futurism. Seen as the advanced stage of decoloniality, African futurism involves the application of "traditional" (indigenous) instruments of articulation and cohesion such as Afro-spirituality, myths, folklore, and indigenous techno-scientific innovations, deployed in their capacity to drive, harness, and actualize future possibilities.

    Abstract: This critical text is a timely ethnography of how global powers, local resistance, and capital flows are shaping contemporary African foodways. Ghana was one of the first countries targeted by a group of US donors and agribusiness corporations that funded an ambitious plan to develop genetically modified (GM) crops for African farmers. The collective believed that GM crops would help farmers increase their yields and help spark a "new" Green Revolution on the continent. Soon after the project began in Ghana, a nationwide food sovereignty movement emerged in opposition to GM crops. Today, in spite of impressive efforts and investments by proponents, only two GM crops remain in the pipeline. Why, after years of preparation, millions of dollars of funding, and multiple policy reforms, did these megaprojects effectively come to a halt? One of the first ethnographies to take on the question of GM crops in the African context, We Are Not Starving: The Struggle for Food Sovereignty in Ghana blends archival analysis, interviews, and participant observation with Ghanaian scientists, farmers, activists, and officials. Ultimately the text aims to illuminate why GM crops have animated the country and to highlight how their introduction has opened an opportunity to air grievances about the systematic de-valuing and exploitation of African land, labor, and knowledge that have been centuries in the making. Die Welt der Basler Mission wird lebendig mit ihren heute undenkbaren Regeln des evangelischen Zölibats und der Heiratsvermittlung durch den Missionsvorstand. Aus Zeitdokumenten werden im zweiten Teil die historischen Rahmenbedingungen sichtbar: Der weitverbreitete Rassismus, die Gewalttätigkeit in den deutschen Kolonien und die zwiespältige Rolle der Missionen. Die Ausplünderung Afrikas setzt sich heute mit neuen Methoden im neokolonialen System fort.     Abstract: As far too many intellectual histories and theoretical contributions from the 'global South' remain under-explored, this volume works towards redressing such imbalance. Experienced authors, from the regions concerned, along different disciplinary lines, and with a focus on different historical timeframes, sketch out their perspectives of envisaged transformations. This includes specific case studies and reflexive accounts from African, South Asian, and Middle Eastern contexts. Taking a critical stance on the ongoing dominance of Eurocentrism in academia, the authors present their contributions in relation to current decolonial challenges. Hereby, they consider intellectual, practical and structural aspects and dimensions, to mark and build their respective positions. From their particular vantage points of (trans)disciplinary and transregional engagement, they sketch out potential pathways for addressing the unfinished business of conceptual decolonization. The specific individual positionalities of the contributors, which are shaped by location and regional perspective as much as in disciplinary, biographical, linguistic, religious, and other terms, are hereby kept in view. Drawing on their significant experiences and insights gained in both the global north and global south, the contributors offer original and innovative models of engagement and theorizing frames that seek to restore and critically engage with intellectual practices from particular regions and transregional contexts in Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East.     Abstract: "Translating Blackness examines the relationship between race, migration, and colonialism through the lives, works, and epistemologies of Black Latinx people across diasporas. Lorgia García-Peña presents Black Latinidad as a social, cultural, and political formation that produces new approaches, knowledges, and ways of understanding our present world. Central to Translating Blackness is the concept of vaivén (coming and going). The term vaivén denotes the crossings-forth and back-that shape migrant life and expose the limits of the binary oppositions through which human beings are deployed as either citizens or foreigners. Vaivén also refers to the nations which oscillate between empire and country, receiving or expulsing people from its center. Black Latinx peoples, García-Peña argues, are subjects in vaivén between belonging and unbelonging. Their lived experience reveals that the nation is not a sufficient rubric from which to understand human experiences"--

    Abstract: "This nation's history and self-understanding have long depended on the notion of a "colonial America," an epoch that supposedly laid the foundation for the modern United States. In Indigenous Continent, Pekka Hämäläinen overturns the traditional, Eurocentric narrative, demonstrating that, far from being weak and helpless "victims" of European colonialism, Indigenous peoples controlled North America well into the 19th century. From the Iroquois and Pueblos to the Lakotas and Comanches, Native empires frequently decimated white newcomers in battle, forcing them to accept and even adopt Native ways. Even as the white population skyrocketed and colonists' land greed become ever more extravagant, Indigenous peoples flourished due to sophisticated diplomacy and flexible leadership structures. As Hämäläinen ultimately contends, instead of "colonial America" we should speak of an "Indigenous America" that was only slowly and unevenly becoming colonial. In our myth-busting era, this restoration of Native Americans to their rightful place at the very center of American history will be seen as one of the most important correctives yet"--

This volume uncovers how these Indigenous women resist violence in Mexico, Central America, and the United States, centering on the topics of femicide, immigration, human rights violations, the criminal justice system, and Indigenous justice. Taking on the issues of our times, Indigenous Women and Violence calls for the deepening of collaborative ethnographies through community engagement and performing research as an embodied experience. This book brings together settler colonialism, feminist ethnography, collaborative and activist ethnography, emotional communities, and standpoint research to look at the links between structural, extreme, and everyday violences across time and space.Indigenous Women and Violence is built on engaging case studies that highlight the individual and collective struggles that Indigenous women face from the racial and gendered oppression that structures their lives. Gendered violence has always been a part of the genocidal and assimilationist projects of settler colonialism, and it remains so today. These structures and the forms of violence inherent to them&;are driving criminalization and victimization of Indigenous men and women, leading to escalating levels of assassination, incarceration, or transnational displacement of Indigenous people, and especially Indigenous women.This volume brings together the potent ethnographic research of eight scholars who have dedicated their careers to illuminating the ways in which Indigenous women have challenged communities, states, legal systems, and social movements to promote gender justice. The chapters in this book are engaged, feminist, collaborative, and activism focused, conveying powerful messages about the resilience and resistance of Indigenous women in the face of violence and systemic oppression.

    Abstract: Raubkunst, Kunstraub, koloniale Sammlungen von Kulturgütern – nicht erst seit der Kontroverse um die nigerianischen Benin-Bronzen des Humboldt-Forums in Berlin ist ein Streit darüber ausgebrochen, wie mit Sammlungsobjekten aus kolonialen Kontexten umgegangen werden sollte. Die unter Fachleuten schon länger andauernde Debatte hat 2018 neue politische Brisanz gewonnen, als der französische Staatspräsident Macron erstmals die Rückgabe an die Herkunftsgesellschaften ankündigte und konkrete Schritte prüfen ließ. Mit der Forderung nach Restitution von Kunstschätzen kolonialer Provenienz werden grundlegende und äußerst komplexe Fragen nach der Gegenwart der Vergangenheit aufgeworfen und das in ethischer, wissenschaftlicher, politischer, juristischer und ästhetischer Hinsicht. Sie betreffen nicht nur Kunsthistoriker*innen und Museumsfachleute , sondern auch Kultur-, Wissenschaftshistoriker*innen, Jurist*innen und Geschichtsdidaktiker*innen, aber auch alle diejenigen, die Museen besuchen, die sich koloniale Sammlungen anschauen und sich bisher wenig mit der Provenienz von Objekten beschäftigt haben. Im vorliegenden Band wird erstmals der Versuch unternommen, die geschichtskulturellen Dimensionen der Debatte auszuleuchten und einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit nahezubringen. Rund dreißig deutsche und internationale Autor*innen melden sich zu Wort. Die Aufsätze verdeutlichen, wie wichtig es ist, ein Kernstück der gegenwärtigen gesellschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung um das Erbe des Kolonialismus von verschiedenen Blickwinkeln aus zu betrachten: Einfache Antworten gibt es nicht, und gerade in dieser Schwierigkeit liegt die besondere Aufgabe.

    Abstract: "The modern discipline of musicology has its roots in early-twentieth-century Germany and in three seemingly distinct but surprisingly connected areas of musical activity: the discovery of Medieval music and music theory through the all-consuming unearthing and decoding of documents; the tremendous growth of youth movements devoted to collective singing and music-making and the study of Medieval music; and the exportation of this music to Protestant and Catholic missions in German East Africa, where it was widely taught and performed. Underlying these activities was the belief that Medieval music, its structure and soundworld, had affinities with the music of "primitive" societies, such as those the missionaries encountered in East Africa. Rejected outright by African musicians and scholars at the time, the belief was kept alive in the European musicological community through the first half of the twentieth century. Anna Maria Busse Berger draws this all together for the first time, anchoring her writing in extensive archival research and her personal experience as the daughter of a German Lutheran missionary in East Africa. The result is a momentous re-thinking of the early history of music scholarship as well as a novel understanding of the imperial and colonial projects that shaped Germany's perception of itself at a crucial time in its history"--

    Abstract: This paper critically evaluates the corpus of writings by Peter van der Veer, a Dutch anthropologist described by Dipesh Chakrabarty (unichicago.edu 2019) as "one of the foremost scholars in comparative studies of religion, nationalism, and urban life in Asia," and "a globally recognized theorist of comparative studies." In the first part of this paper, which consists of three parts, I will dwell on van der Veer`s early works from 1985 to 1994. Here, I discuss his contributions to the studies of Hinduism, orientalism and nationalism. In part two of the paper, I analyze his works during the second phase from 1995 to the present. Though diverse, I have arranged the analysis of these works under the overarch ing category of comparison. The final brief section identifies the style and mode of van der Veer`s interventions the sine qua non of which I call, after Nietzsche, theorization with a hammer. In conclusion, I highlight themes and questions, which van der Veer`s works do not squarely address but gainfully enable future research. (Abstract)

    Abstract: A fascinating case study of the archaeological site at Murujuga, AustraliaLocated in the Dampier Archipelago of Western Australia, Murujuga is the single largest archaeological site in the world. It contains an estimated one million petroglyphs, or rock art motifs, produced by the Indigenous Australians who have historically inhabited the archipelago. To date, there has been no comprehensive survey of the site's petroglyphs or those who created them. Since the 1960s, regional mining interests have caused significant damage to this site, destroying an estimated 5 to 25 percent of the petroglyphs in Murujuga. Today, Murujuga holds the unenviable status of being one of the most endangered archaeological sites in the world.José Antonio González Zarandona provides a full postcolonial analysis of Murujuga as well as a geographic and archaeological overview of the site, its ethnohistory, and its considerable significance to Indigenous groups, before examining the colonial mistreatment of Murujuga from the seventeenth century to the present. Drawing on a range of postcolonial perspectives, Zarandona reads the assaults on the rock art of Murujuga as instances of what he terms "landscape iconoclasm": the destruction of art and landscapes central to group identity in pursuit of ideological, political, and economic dominance. Viewed through the lens of landscape iconoclasm, the destruction of Murujuga can be understood as not only the result of economic pressures but also as a means of reinforcing—through neglect, abandonment, fragmentation, and even certain practices of heritage preservation—the colonial legacy in Western Australia. Murujuga provides a case study through which to examine, and begin to reject, archaeology's global entanglement with colonial intervention and the politics of heritage preservation

    Abstract: The relationships of the Jains with colonial administrators, Western scholars, and missionaries between 1800 and 1950 were marked by both competition and cooperation, as they interacted in economic, political, intellectual and religious spheres. This volume traces these encounters, and also examines the contributions to the history of Jain studies made by Jain and non-Jain Indians through their collaborations with Western scholars. The book is divided into three sections. The first considers the engagement on the part of European missionaries and Orientalists, and British colonial officials, with Jains and Jainism from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. The second focuses on the changing dynamics of identities within the Jain community during the nineteenth century, brought about through their mercantile, entrepreneurial, philanthropic and legal activities. The final section maps the trajectory of Jainological studies undertaken by German, Italian, American and Indian scholars from the second half of the nineteenth century into the early twentieth century.     Abstract: Examining the continuous French military interventions in Chad in the two decades after its independence, this study demonstrates how France's successful counterinsurgency efforts to protect the regime of François Tombalbaye would ultimately weaken the Chadian state and encourage Libya's Muammar Gaddafi to intervene. In covering the subsequent French efforts to counter Libyan ambitions and the rise to power of Hissène Habré, one of postcolonial Africa's most brutal dictators, Nathaniel K. Powell demonstrates that French strategies aiming to prevent the collapse of authoritarian regimes had the opposite effect, exacerbating violent conflicts and foreign interventions in Chad and further afield. Based on extensive archival research to trace the causes, course, and impact of French interventions in Chad, this study offers insights and lessons for current interveners - including France - fighting a 'war on terrorism' in the Sahel whose strategies and impact parallel those of France in the 1960s-1980s.

    Abstract: Mit der Veröffentlichung des von Präsident Macron beauftragten Berichtes zur Rückgabe des in französischen Museen befindlichen afrikanischen Kulturerbes entflammte im November 2018 sofort eine kontroverse Debatte, die weit über Frankreichs Grenzen hinausging und bis heute anhält. Nicht von ungefähr, zeigt die Untersuchung doch klar, dass ein großer Teil der afrikanischen Sammlungen in den ethnologischen Museen Europas gewaltvoll im Zuge des Kolonialismus oder durch die Übervorteilung der Einheimischen angeeignet wurde - heute befinden sich ca. 90 Prozent des afrikanischen Kulturerbes außerhalb des Kontinents. Nötig ist eine radikale Revision der bisherigen Sammlungspraxis, die auch deutsche Museen und nicht zuletzt das geplante Humboldt Forum berührt. Die deutsche Übersetzung des hitzig diskutierten, aber nur wenig gelesenen Berichtes soll helfen, die Debatte um Geschichte, Restitution und die Zukunft der Museen, die hierzulande erst an ihrem Anfang steht, für die breite Gesellschaft zu öffnen und sie gleichzeitig zu versachlichen. Denn letztlich geht es um viel mehr: Die Debatte über die Rückgabe des afrikanischen Kulturerbes kann der Anstoß sein für ein neues Gespräch zwischen Afrika und Europa und möglicherweise ein erster Schritt hin zu einem neuen Verhältnis auf Augenhöhe.

    Abstract: Throughout history, a large portion of the world's population has lived under imperial rule. Although scholars do not always agree on when and where the roots of imperialism lie, most would agree that imperial configurations have affected human history so profoundly that the legacy of ancient empires continues to structure the modern world in many ways. Empires are best described as heterogeneous and dynamic patchworks of imperial configurations in which imperial power was the outcome of the complex interaction between evolving colonial structures and various types of agents in highly contingent relationships. The goal of this volume is to harness the work of the "next generation" of empire scholars in order to foster new theoretical and methodological perspectives that are of relevance within and beyond archaeology and to foreground empires as a cross-cultural category.     Abstract: "In Unfixed Jennifer Bajorek traces the relationship between photography and decolonial political imagination in Francophone West Africa in the years immediately leading up to and following independence from French colonial rule in 1960. Focusing on images created by photographers based in Senegal and Benin, Bajorek draws on formal analyses of images and ethnographic fieldwork with photographers to show how photography not only reflected but also actively contributed to social and political change. The proliferation of photographic imagery--through studio portraiture, bureaucratic ID cards, political reportage and photojournalism, magazines, and more--provided the means for west Africans to express their experiences, shape public and political discourse, and reimagine their world. In delineating how west Africans' embrace of photography was associated with and helped spur the democratization of political participation and the development of labor and liberation movements, Bajorek tells a new history of photography in west Africa--one that theorizes photography's capacity for doing decolonial work"--

As the cultures of Indigenous peoples in North America were mined for scientific knowledge, years of organizing, classifying, and cataloguing--hardened into accepted categories, naming conventions, and tribal affiliations --much of it wrong. Cataloguing Culture examines how colonialism operates in museum bureaucracies. Using the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History as her reference, Hannah Turner organizes her study by the technologies framing museum work over 200 years: field records, the ledger, the card catalogue, the punch card, and eventually the database. She examines how categories were applied to ethnographic material culture and became routine throughout federal collecting institutions.     Abstract: "This book presents innovative and creative ethnographic perspectives on the intersection between art, anthropology, and contested cultural heritage resulting from ethnographic and artistic research by the TRACES project (an interdisciplinary research project funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme involving a collaboration between institutional partners in 11 European countries). The case studies in this volume critically assess and evaluate how and in which arrangements artistic/aesthetic methods and creative everyday practices contribute to strengthening communities both culturally and economically. They also explore the extent to which these methods emphasize minority voices and ultimately set in motion a process of reflexive Europeanisation from below which unfolds within Europe and beyond its borders. At the heart of these ethnographic case studies is the development of a new way of transmitting contentious cultural heritage, which responds to the present situation in Europe of unstable political conditions and a sense of Europe in crisis. With chapters looking at difficult art exhibitions on colonialism, death masks, Holocaust memorials and skull collections, the contributors articulate a response to the crisis in current economic-political conditions in Europe and advances brand new theoretical groundwork on the configuration of a renewed European identity.     Abstract: Conceived as both a vehicle to national prestige and as a civilizing mission, the second French colonial empire (1830-1962) challenged soldiers, scholars, and administrators to understand societies radically different from their own. The resultant networks of anthropological inquiry, however, did not have this effect. Rather, they opened pathways to political and intellectual independence framed in the language of social science, and in the process upended the colonial political system and reshaped the nature of human inquiry in France. While still unequal, French colonial rule in Africa revealed the durability and strength of non-European modes of thought. In this influential new study, historian Douglas W. Leonard examines the political and intellectual repercussions of French efforts to understand and to dominate colonial Africa through the use of anthropology. From General Louis Faidherbe in the 1840s to politician Jacques Soustelle and sociologist Pierre Bourdieu in the 1950s, these French thinkers sowed the seeds of colonial destruction

    Abstract: By presenting a history of Western ethnography of animism in East Timor during the Portuguese period, this intriguing study offers an original synthesis of the country`s history, culture and anthropology. The book consists of ten chapters, each one a narrative of the work and experience of a particular ethnographer. Covering a selection of seminal 19th- and 20th-century ethnographies, the author explores the relationship between spiritual beliefs, colonial administration, ethnographic interests and fieldwork experience. It is argued that the presence of outsiders precipitated a new `transformative animism` as colonial control over Portuguese Timor was consolidated. This came about because increasingly powerful outsiders posed threats and offered rewards to the Timorese just as the powerful ancestor spirits had long done; consequently, the Timorese ritualised their dealings with outsiders following their established model for appealing to spirits. Bringing colonial and professional ethnography into the one frame of reference, it is shown that ethnographers of both types not only bore witness to these processes of transformative animism, they also exemplified them.

    Abstract: In February 1937, following an abortive attack by a handful of insurgents on Mussolini's High Command in Italian-occupied Ethiopia, 'repression squads' of armed Blackshirts and Fascist civilians were unleashed on the defenceless residents of Addis Ababa. In three terror-filled days and nights of arson, murder and looting, thousands of innocent and unsuspecting men, women and children were roasted alive, shot, bludgeoned, stabbed to death, or blown to pieces with hand-grenades. Meanwhile the notorious Viceroy Rodolfo Graziani, infamous for his atrocities in Libya, took the opportunity to add to the carnage by eliminating the intelligentsia and nobility of the ancient Ethiopian empire in a pogrom that swept across the land. In a richly illustrated and ground-breaking work backed up by meticulous and scholarly research, Ian Campbell reconstructs and analyses one of Fascist Italy's least known atrocities, which he estimates eliminated 19-20 per cent of the capital's population. He exposes the hitherto little known cover-up conducted at the highest levels of the British government, which enabled the facts of one of the most hideous civilian massacres of all time to be concealed, and the perpetrators to walk free.

    Abstract: Die Rolle Japans als koloniale Besatzungsmacht im Ersten Weltkrieg ist noch weitgehend unerforscht. Japan erklärte Deutschland am 23. August 1914 aufgrund des anglo-japanischen Bündnisses den Krieg und besetzte daraufhin die deutschen Kolonien in Mikronesien nördlich des Äquators.Yuko Maezawa untersucht in ihrer Studie das Verhältnis zwischen Japanern, Deutschen und Mikronesiern. Im Gegensatz zur vorherigen Kolonialmacht Deutschland war Japan kein christliches Land. Religion und Bildung wurden nach der japanischen Besetzung auf den Inseln strikt voneinander getrennt. Das Hauptziel der japanischen Erziehungspolitik war die Verbreitung der japanischen Sprache und die Japanisierung Mikronesiens, weshalb die Japaner vor Ort die propagandistische Theorie einer gleichen Rassenzugehörigkeit von Japanern und Mikronesien verbreiteten, um die Insulaner leichter in die japanische Gesellschaft zu integrieren. Dennoch wurde die deutsche christliche Missionstätigkeit während des Kriegs durch die Japaner toleriert. Erst nach Kriegsende wurden die deutschen katholischen Missionare durch spanische Jesuiten und die deutsche protestantische Liebenzeller Mission durch eine protestantische Missionsgesellschaft aus Japan (Nan'yo Dendo dan) ersetzt.Bei ihren umfangreichen Quellenrecherchen entdeckte Maezawa u. a. einen sehr kritischen Bericht des japanischen Außenministeriums über die japanische Kolonialpolitik in Mikronesien und veröffentlicht diesen zum ersten Mal. Er dokumentiert Übergriffe von körperlicher Gewalt sowie Vergewaltigungen und gilt als die einzige Quelle, in der Japaner das Benehmen ihrer Landsleute detailliert negativ darstellten.
