    Abstract: "This book introduces students to the anthropology of magic, witchcraft, and supernatural belief. It takes a new approach to this area within the anthropology of religion, demonstrating that the bases for these beliefs and alleged practices are instinctual, inherent in human cognition and psychology, and are likely rooted in our evolutionary biology. It shows how magic and magical thinking are regular elements in people's daily activities, and that understanding the components of the witchcraft complex offers surprisingly important insights into patterns of thinking and social behavior. The book reviews the many meanings of "magic" and "witchcraft," explains why they are inadequate, and introduces the anthropological meanings of the terms. The components of these beliefs are timeless and universal; this fact, and recent advances in the brain sciences, suggest that the principles of magic are derived from basic processes of human thinking, and the attributes of the witch derive from neuro-biologically based fears and fantasies. Such beliefs had adaptive significance in the evolutionary development of the human species; they are inherently human. This book is intended to focus anew on the core concepts of magic, witchcraft, and the supernatural, while also serving as a valuable introduction to the anthropology of religion for undergraduate and graduate-level courses"--...

    Abstract: In recent years, Bengali Muslims in India have faced harassment and scapegoating as the trope of the illegal Bangladeshi has gained political currency. India's Bangladesh Problem explores the experience of Bengali Muslims on the Indian side of the India-Bangladesh border in the context of neoliberal policies, unequal bilateral relations, labor migration, contested citizenship, and increasingly xenophobic government rhetoric. Drawing on extensive research in the borderlands and hinterlands of both countries, Navine Murshid argues that ever-deepening neoliberal policies across the border have shaped how certain ethnic groups are valued and have reconfigured social hierarchies. She provides new insights into the strategic inclusion, exclusion, and invisibility that characterizes Bengali Muslims' lives, rendering them a group susceptible to manipulation by virtue of their ethnic kinship to the majority of Bangladeshis. In turn, Bengali Muslims simultaneously resist and utilize received neoliberal ideas to sustain their lives and livelihoods at a time when neoliberal development has largely bypassed them

    Abstract: Angeregt durch ihr Studium der Anthropologie begibt sich Ursula Walter-Okine auf eine Forschungsreise. Im Archiv der Norddeutschen Missionsgesellschaft in Bremen findet sie Briefe und Berichte ihres Großvaters Ernst Paul Walter, der von 1912 bis 1914 in der damaligen deutschen Kolonie Togo als Missionar und Lehrer tätig war. Im Bewusstsein um die etwa hundert Jahre zurück liegende „wandernde Gedächtnislücke“ befragt die Autorin Angehörige von Zeitzeugen in Süddeutschland und an der westafrikanischen Küste. Sie entwirft ein vielschichtiges Bild, ein Erinnerungsmosaik, gespeist aus Überlegungen, historischen Fotos, Berichten und Interviews. Sie bettet ihre Ergebnisse in Theorien zu kollektivem, historischem, individuellem und transkulturellem Gedächtnis ein. Mit dieser Studie bietet sie Lesenden einen persönlichen Einblick und Zugang zur Aufarbeitung deutscher Kolonial-Missionsgeschichte.

    Abstract: Suizidalität zu erkennen, darauf richtig zu reagieren und Betroffene schließlich wieder zum Leben zu überzeugen, gehört zu den herausfordernden, aber auch alltäglichen psychiatrischen Aufgaben. Die Suizidforschung konzentriert sich meist auf Risikofaktoren, Erklärungsmodelle und einzelne suizidpräventive Maßnahmen. Die vorliegende Ethnographie macht die Suizidprävention hingegen selbst zum Gegenstand der Analyse und Kritik. Ergebnis ist eine Geschichte und eine praxisfähige Theorie der Suizidprävention, welche die Herausforderungen, Schwierigkeiten und Widersprüche dieser Arbeit analysiert: In der Suizidprävention wird das normative Grundprinzip der autonomen Lebensführung oftmals gleichermaßen verteidigt wie auch praktisch infrage gestellt. Die schwierigen Spannungsverhältnisse von Therapie und Kontrolle, Tabu und Narrativ, Prävention und Ansteckung zeigen sich hier besonders deutlich. Diese Widersprüche herauszuarbeiten ist von geradezu existenzieller Bedeutung – und Ziel dieses Buches.

    Abstract: Dieses Open-Access-Buch befasst sich kritisch mit der Anwendung freiheitseinschränkender Maßnahmen (FeM) bei Menschen mit Demenz in professionellen Sorgebeziehungen, die sowohl im Hinblick auf ihren vermeintlichen Nutzen als auch auf ihre ethische Tragweite zu hinterfragen sind. In einer disziplinübergreifenden Analyse des Phänomens von FeM bei Menschen mit Demenz werden Diskurse und Erkenntnisse aus Pflegewissenschaft, Gerontologie, Rechtswissenschaft und Ethik gebündelt, zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt und erweitert. Die empirisch informierte Gesamtdarstellung wird dabei ergänzt durch eine tiefgreifende Reflexion der Personalität, Vulnerabilität und Leiblichkeit von Menschen mit Demenz. Davon ausgehend werden konkrete Kategorien und konzeptionelle Zugänge zur Bewertung und Einzelfallprüfung von FeM in professionellen Sorgebeziehungen entwickelt. Der Autor Sebastian Ritzi ist akademischer Mitarbeiter und Studiengangkoordinator am Institut für Gerontologie der Universität Heidelberg. Nach seiner Ausbildung zum Altenpfleger und Weiterbildung zur Pflegefachkraft für Gerontopsychiatrie studierte er die Fächer Gesundheit und Gesellschaft (Care) sowie Philosophie/Ethik an der Universität Heidelberg. Er blickt auf langjährige Berufserfahrung als Pflegefachkraft in Deutschland und der Schweiz zurück. Darüber hinaus ist er in der Aus-, Fort- und Weiterbildung von Pflegefachkräften sowie als pflegefachlicher Gutachter bzw. Pflegesachverständiger für Gerichte und Heimaufsichtsbehörden tätig.

Dieser Sammelband beleuchtet solche Deutungskonkurrenzen erstmals in interdisziplinärer, epochenübergreifender Perspektive; die Beiträge fragen danach, unter welchen Bedingungen welche Deutungen Resonanz und Rezeption fanden, wie sich dies im Laufe der Zeit änderte und inwiefern dieser Wandel mit historischen Meistererzählungen (Modernisierung, Säkularisierung, Rationalisierung) korreliert oder kollidiert.

    Abstract: In Infertile Environments, Janelle Lamoreaux investigates how epigenetic research into the effects of toxic exposure conceptualizes and configures environments. Drawing on fieldwork in a Nanjing, China, toxicology lab that studies the influence of pesticides and other pollutants on male reproductive and developmental health, Lamoreaux shows how the lab's everyday research practices bring national, hormonal, dietary, maternal, and laboratory environments into being. She situates the lab's work within broader Chinese history as well as the contemporary cultural and political moment, in which declining fertility rates and reproductive governance and technology are growing concerns. She also points to how toxicology in China is a transnational endeavor tied to both local conditions and international research agendas and infrastructures, which highlights the myriad scales and scope of epigenetic environments. At a moment of growing concerns about toxins, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and climate change, Lamoreaux demonstrates that epigenetic research's proliferation of environments produces new kinds of toxic relations that impact multiple generations of humans.

This book explores the experiences of the ethnic and religious minorities of Iran, such as Jews, Yarsani, Christian, Sabean Mandaean, Bahai, Zoroastrian, Baluch, Kurd, and others and provides a historical overview of their position in society before and after the 1979 Islamic revolution and highlights their contribution to the country's history, diversity, and development. It also focuses on the historical, sociopolitical, and economic factors that affected the minorities' development during the last century. S.     Abstract: This book offers a philosophical perspective on contemporary Tourette Syndrome scholarship, a field which has exploded over the last thirty years. Despite intense research efforts on this common neurodevelopmental condition in the age of the brain sciences, the syndrome’s causes and potential cures remain intriguingly elusive. How does this lack of progress relate to the tacitly operating philosophical concepts that shape our current thinking about Tourette Syndrome? This book foregrounds these tacit concepts and shows how they relate to “big topics” in philosophy such as time, volition, and the self. By tracing how these topics relate to current research on Tourette’s, it invites us to re-think our approach to research and care. Such re-thinking is urgently needed: individuals and families living with Tourette Syndrome remain under-serviced as pharmacological and behavioural therapies provide relief for some but not all who need support. This book highlights what questions we ask and do not ask in contemporary scholarship, thereby surfacing invisible constraints and opportunities in the field. It is of interest to scholars, health professionals, students, and affected families who want to better understand this burgeoning field of research with its conceptual controversies, approaches to aetiology, and directions for new research and improved clinical care.

    Abstract: This book provides the first systematic study on three types of incentives for organ donation. It covers extensive research conducted in four culturally different societies: Hong Kong, mainland China, Iran and the United States, and shows on the basis of the research that a new model of incentives can be constructed to enhance organ donation in contemporary societies. The book focuses on three types of incentives: honorary incentives, commonly adopted in the United States and other Western countries by offering things such as a thank-you card and a memorial park for donors to encourage donations motivated by pure altruism; compensationalist incentives, adopted in the Islamic Republic of Iran to encourage donation by providing monetary compensation to unrelated living donors for appreciating their altruistic contribution of donation; and familist incentives, implemented in Israel and mainland China to provide priority to organ transplantation to donors and/or their family members. The book demonstrates that a new model of incentives must go beyond offering only one type of incentives and should rather include different types of incentives that are practically effective, politically legitimate and ethically justifiable for particular societies. This implies that suitable incentive measures may vary from society to society to optimize organ donation. This book provides a clear reference for both the scholars and practitioners in the field of organ transplantation, as well as for general readers interested in bioethics and health care policy.

    Abstract: Diese Dissertation untersucht das Ausmaß der Spendenbereitschaft für Flüchtlinge und dessen individuelle sowie kontextuelle Korrelate unter einheimischen Deutschen zwischen Jahren 2015 und 2018. Die Dissertation enthält drei originäre empirische Beiträge. Im ersten empirischen Beitrag wird das Ausmaß des Spendenverhaltens für Flüchtlinge, seine regionale Variation und Veränderung im Zeitverlauf beschrieben. Das Kapitel beschreibt, wie Einstellungen und soziodemografische Merkmale mit Spenden für Flüchtlinge zusammenhängen. Ich stelle fest, dass die Spenden für Flüchtlinge besonders hoch waren bei Frauen, Menschen mit einer höheren sozioökonomischen Position und Personen mit einer positiven Einstellung zur Einwanderung. Im zweiten und dritten empirischen Beitrag werden mögliche kontextuelle korrelate für solche Spenden betrachtet. Dies wird erreicht durch die Kombination von individuellen Panelerhebungsdaten mit Sozialindikatoren auf Stadtteilebene. Die zweite empirische Studie prüft, ob das Geben an mit der Anwesenheit von Ausländern im Wohnumfeld korreliert ist. Umgebung korreliert. Es gibt keine robusten Beweise dafür, dass die Anwesenheit von verschiedenen Gruppen von Ausländern negativ mit Spenden für Flüchtlinge verbunden ist. Im letzten empirischen Kapitel wird untersucht, ob die ethnische Segregation auf Stadtebene und der Wohnsitz in den Clustern der Einheimischen negativ mit Spenden für Flüchtlinge verbunden ist. Einerseits wird manchmal eine negative Korrelation zwischen der Segregation auf Stadtebene und Spenden für Flüchtlinge festgestellt.     Abstract: This doctoral thesis analyzes extent of charitable giving to refugees and its individual as well as contextual correlates among native Germans between years 2015 and 2018. Dissertation contains three original empirical contributions. In the first empirical contribution the extent of charitable giving to refugees, its regional variation and change over time is described. Chapter describes how attitudes and socio-demographic characteristics are correlated with giving to refugees. I find that giving to refugees was especially high among females, people of higher socio-economic position and those holding positive attitude towards immigration. In the second and third empirical contributions possible environmental correlates of such giving are considered. This is achieved by combining panel survey data with fine-grained neighborhood level social indicators. Second empirical study tests if giving to refugees is correlated with presence of foreigners in the residential environment. There is lack of robust evidence that presence of various foreigner groups is negatively associated with giving to refugees. Final empirical chapter investigates if city-level ethnic segregation and residing in the clusters of natives is negatively associated with donating to refugees. On the one hand, negative correlation between city-level segregation and giving to refugees is sometimes found. There is, however, no evidence that natives living in the clusters of natives are less likely to support refugees with their donations.

    Abstract: Nach einer Fehl- oder Stillgeburt sind Betroffene mit der Vorstellung konfrontiert, es sei ja noch kein richtiges Kind gewesen, der Verlust sei entsprechend wenig betrauernswert. Julia Böcker geht empirisch der Frage nach, unter welchen Bedingungen es gesellschaftlich als legitim gilt, das vorzeitige Ende einer Schwangerschaft als Tod und Verlust eines Kindes zu behandeln. Im Ergebnis steht die Rekonstruktion subjektiver Verlusterfahrungen im Kontext der kulturellen Ordnungen um körperliche Materialität, medizinisch (un)bestimmtes Leben und soziale Personalität. Deutlich werden der Umgang mit Wissensgrenzen und das Paradox einer subjektverantworteten Trauerkultur in der Gegenwart.
