    Abstract: Noch immer werden Menschen aufgrund des ihnen zugeschriebenen Geschlechts und ihrer ethnischen Identität innerhalb der akademischen Philosophie strukturell benachteiligt. Die vor allem unter Philosoph:innen geführte Debatte über die Ursachen sowie mögliche Lösungen für dieses Problem hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren intensiviert. Dabei wird jedoch eine Dimension der Benachteiligung - die von Menschen mit bestimmtem sozio-ökonomischen Status - häufig ausgeblendet. Jekaterina Markow weist auf diese Leerstelle im Diskurs hin und zeigt Wege auf, wie sich strukturelle Diskriminierung innerhalb der akademischen Philosophie wirksam bekämpfen ließe. Dabei entwirft sie zugleich das Bild einer Philosophie, die auch Nicht-Philosoph:innen stärker als bisher zum Erwerb philosophischen Wissens befähigt.

Susan Burgess explores films such as Casablanca, various James Bond movies, and Julie and Julia, and television shows such as thirtysomething and The Americans, as well as the Broadway sensation Hamilton, as sources of growing popular support for LGBT rights.     Abstract: "Having a "good" sense of humor generally means being able to take a joke without getting offended--laughing even at a taboo thought or at another's expense. The insinuation is that laughter eases social tension and creates solidarity in an overly politicized social world. But, do the stakes change when the jokes are racist? In The Souls of White Jokes Raúl Pérez argues that we must genuinely confront this unsettling question in order to fully understand the persistence of anti-black racism and white supremacy in American society today. W.E.B. Du Bois's prescient essay The Souls of White Folk was one of the first to theorize whiteness as a social and political construct based on a feeling of superiority over racialized others--a kind of racial contempt. Pérez extends this theory to the study of humor, connecting theories of racial formation to parallel ideas about humor stemming from laughter at another's misfortune. Critically synthesizing scholarship on race, humor, and emotions, he uncovers a key function of humor as a tool for producing racial alienation, dehumanization, exclusion, and even violence. Pérez tracks this use of humor from blackface minstrelsy to contemporary contexts, including police culture, politics, and far-right extremists. Rather than being harmless fun, this humor plays a central role in reinforcing and mobilizing racist ideology and power under the guise of amusement. The Souls of White Jokes exposes this malicious side of humor, while also revealing a new facet of racism today. Though it can be comforting to imagine racism as coming from racial hatred and anger, the terrifying reality is that it is tied up in seemingly benign, even joyful, everyday interactions as well-- and for racism to be eradicated we must face this truth"--

    Abstract: In Sissy Insurgencies Marlon B. Ross focuses on the figure of the sissy in order to rethink how Americans have imagined, articulated, and negotiated manhood and boyhood from the 1880s to the present. Rather than collapsing sissiness into homosexuality, Ross shows how sissiness constitutes a historically fluid range of gender practices that are expressed as a physical manifestation, discursive epithet, social identity, and political phenomenon. He reconsiders several black leaders, intellectuals, musicians, and athletes within the context of sissiness, from Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and James Baldwin to Little Richard, Amiri Baraka, and Wilt Chamberlain. Whether examining Washington's practice of cleaning as an iteration of sissiness, Baldwin's self-fashioned sissy deportment, or sissiphobia in professional sports and black nationalism, Ross demonstrates that sissiness can be embraced and exploited to conform to American gender norms or disrupt racialized patriarchy. In this way, sissiness constitutes a central element in modern understandings of race and gender.

Seit den 1960er Jahren leistet er Widerstand gegen Unrecht und übt Zeitkritik unter Berufung auf die universellen Werte der Aufklärung. Die Konjunkturen seines politischen Engagements sind ein Spiegel, sowohl der US-amerikanischen als auch der Geschichte der Intellektuellen. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich dem gesellschaftspolitischen Wirken des Intellektuellen Chomsky. Sie untersucht – auf Grundlage erstmals erschlossener historischer Quellen aus dem Vorlass des 1928 geborenen Linguisten – dessen jüdische Sozialisation, seine Werte und Selbstverortung sowie sein Politik- und Verantwortungsverständnis. Behandelt werden unter anderem Chomskys Einsatz gegen den Vietnamkrieg sowie seine Verbindung zur Neuen Linken und zur globalisierungskritischen Bewegung. Auch kontroverse Interventionen des streitbaren Denkers werden angesprochen.     Abstract: Creating the Suburban School Advantage explains how American suburban school districts gained a competitive edge over their urban counterparts. John L. Rury provides a national overview of the process, focusing on the period between 1950 and 1980, and presents a detailed study of metropolitan Kansas City, a region representative of trends elsewhere.While big city districts once were widely seen as superior and attracted families seeking the best educational opportunities for their children, suburban school systems grew rapidly in the post-World War II era as middle class and more affluent families moved to those communities. As Rury relates, at the same time, economically dislocated African Americans migrated from the South to center-city neighborhoods, testing the capacity of urban institutions. As demographic trends drove this urban-suburban divide, a suburban ethos of localism contributed to the socio-economic exclusion that became a hallmark of outlying school systems. School districts located wholly or partly within the municipal boundaries of Kansas City, Missouri offer revealing cases for understanding these national patterns.As Rury demonstrates, struggles to achieve greater educational equity and desegregation contributed to so-called white flight and what Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan termed a crisis of urban education in 1965. Despite often valiant efforts to serve inner city children and bolster urban school districts, the result of this exodus, Rury cogently argues, was the creation of a new metropolitan educational hierarchy-a mirror image of the urban-centric model that prevailed before World War II. The stubborn perception that suburban schools are superior, reflective of test scores and budgets, has persisted into the 21st century and instantiates today's metropolitan landscape of social, economic, and educational inequality

    Abstract: Die Verdammten der Stadt führt uns mitten ins schwarze Ghetto im Inneren Chicagos und in die sich deindustrialisierende banlieue in den Außenzonen von Paris und entdeckt, dass städtische Marginalität nicht überall gleich ist. Auf Grundlage von Feld-, statistischen und historischen Daten zeigt Wacquant, dass die Rückbildung der innerstädtischen Gebiete in den Vereinigten Staaten im Anschluss an die 1960er Jahre nicht durch die Entstehung einer „underclass“ erklärt werden kann, sondern durch den gemeinsamen Rückzug von Markt und Staat, der von einer staatlichen Politik der Rassentrennung und der Aufgabe der Städte gefördert wurde. In den europäischen Städten dagegen läutet die Ausbreitung von „Problemquartieren“ nicht die Entstehung von Ghettos amerikanischen Stils ein. Sie rührt vielmehr von der Zersetzung der Arbeiterklassegebiete, von Massenarbeitslosigkeit, der Prekarisierung von Beschäftigung und der ethnischen Durchmischung von bislang getrennten Populationen, wodurch städtische Formationen hervorgebracht wurden, die eher „Anti-Ghettos“ sind. Der Vergleich zwischen dem US-amerikanischen „Schwarzen Gürtel“ und dem „Roten Gürtel“ Frankreichs zeigt, dass staatliche Strukturen und Politiken eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Artikulation von Klasse, Rasse und Raum auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks spielen. Er zeigt auch die Kristallisation eines neuen Regimes von Marginalität, die von der Fragmentierung der Erwerbsarbeit, dem Rückzug des Sozialstaates und der Konzentration benachteiligter sozialer Kategorien in stigmatisierten Distrikten angeheizt wird, die über kein kollektives Idiom der Identität verfügen. Diese diffamierten Bezirke sind nicht nur die Senkgruben einer vergangenen ökonomischen Ära, sondern auch die Brutstädte des Prekariats im Zeitalter des neoliberalen Kapitalismus.     Abstract: An innovative examination of American society, culture, and politics, The Age of Charisma argues that the modern relationship between American leaders and followers grew out of a unique group of charismatic social movements prominent in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Drawing on hundreds of letters and testimonials, Jeremy C. Young illustrates how 'personal magnetism' in public speaking shaped society by enabling a shift from emotionally-inaccessible leadership to emotionally-available leadership. This charismatic speaking style caused a rapid transformation in the leader-follower relationship, creating an emotional link between speakers and listeners, and the effects of this social transformation remain with us today. Young argues that ultimately, charismatic movements enhanced American democracy by encouraging the personalization of leadership - creating a culture in which today's leaders appeal directly to Americans through mass media.

    Abstract: Since the nineteenth century, the distinct tones of kika kila, the Hawaiian steel guitar, have defined the island sound. Here historian and steel guitarist John W. Troutman offers the instrument's definitive history, from its discovery by a young Hawaiian royalist named Joseph Kekuku to its revolutionary influence on American and world music. During the early twentieth century, Hawaiian musicians traveled the globe, from tent shows in the Mississippi Delta, where they shaped the new sounds of country and the blues, to regal theaters and vaudeville stages in New York, Berlin, Kolkata, and beyond. In the process, Hawaiian guitarists recast the role of the guitar in modern life. But as Troutman explains, by the 1970s the instrument's embrace and adoption overseas also worked to challenge its cultural legitimacy in the eyes of a new generation of Hawaiian musicians. As a consequence, the indigenous instrument nearly disappeared in its homeland. Using rich musical and historical sources, including interviews with musicians and their descendants, Troutman provides the complete story of how this Native Hawaiian instrument transformed not only American music but the sounds of modern music throughout the world

Getting Respect illuminates their experiences by comparing three countries with enduring group boundaries: the United States, Brazil and Israel. The authors delve into what kinds of stigmatizing or discriminatory incidents individuals encounter in each country, how they respond to these occurrences, and what they view as the best strategy--whether individually, collectively, through confrontation, or through self-improvement--for dealing with such events.     Abstract: "The West, especially the Intermountain states, ranks among the whitest places in America, but this fact obscures the more complicated history of racial diversity in the region. In Making the White Man's West, author Jason E. Pierce argues that since the time of the Louisiana Purchase, the American West has been a racially contested space. Using a nuanced theory of historical 'whiteness,' he examines why and how Anglo-Americans dominated the region for a 120-year period. In the early nineteenth century, critics like Zebulon Pike and Washington Irving viewed the West as a 'dumping ground' for free blacks and Native Americans, a place where they could be segregated from the white communities east of the Mississippi River. But as immigrant populations and industrialization took hold in the East, white Americans began to view the West as a 'refuge for real whites.' The West had the most diverse population in the nation with substantial numbers of American Indians, Hispanics, and Asians, but Anglo-Americans could control these mostly disenfranchised peoples and enjoy the privileges of power while celebrating their presence as providing a unique regional character. From this came the belief in a White Man's West, a place ideally suited for 'real' Americans in the face of changing world. The first comprehensive study to examine the construction of white racial identity in the West, Making the White Man's West shows how these two visions of the West...as a racially diverse holding cell and a white refuge...shaped the history of the region and influenced a variety of contemporary social issues in the West today"..

    Note: Description based upon print version of record , Biographical note: Maja Bächler, Dr. phil., promovierte an der Universität Potsdam und ist zurzeit wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Theorie der Politik an der HU Berlin , Folterszenen werden zunehmend Bestandteil US-amerikanischer Kriegs- und Terrorismusfilme. Opfer und Täter werden entweder US-amerikanisch oder islamisch-arabisch markiert. Maja Bächler zeigt am Beispiel von acht Filmen (von »The Little Drummer Girl« bis »Three Kings« und »Syriana«), wie dabei Helden, Feindbilder und Opfer konstruiert werden. Der verletzbare US-Held im Film symbolisiert dabei die verletzliche Nation bzw. das angreifbare Territorium, ein Mythos, der seit den Anschlägen vom 11. September 2001 immer mehr zu einem Bestandteil nationaler Narrative wird. So wird im Film der »Ausnahmezustand« inszeniert, durch den eine Bindung der Bevölkerung an eine imperiale Mission erfolgt. Sogar in kritischen Filmen wird Hollywood dadurch zu einem wichtigen Faktor für die Selbstdarstellung und Selbstlegitimation der USA als imperialem Akteur. Und wie ist zu erklären, dass einige ihren Aufenthalt vorzeitig abbrechen, während andere trotz problematischer Verhältnisse bleiben?     Abstract: "To argue against the widely proclaimed idea of American decline might seem a lonely task. After all, the problems are real and serious. Yet if we take a longer view, much of the discourse about decline appears exaggerated, hyperbolic and ahistorical. Why? First, because of the deep underlying strengths of the United States. These include not only size, population, demography and resources, but also the scale and importance of its economy and financial markets, its scientific research and technology, its competitiveness, its military power and its attractiveness to talented immigrants. Second, there is the weight of history and of American exceptionalism. Throughout its history, the United States has repeatedly faced and eventually overcome daunting challenges and crises. Contrary to a prevailing pessimism, there is nothing inevitable about American decline. Ultimately, the ability to avoid serious decline is less a question of material factors than of policy, leadership and political will"--Provided by publisher

These politics brought forth a new attention to social identity, an attention that continues to divide people today. While previous studies have focused on the political movements of this period, they have neglected the conceptual prehistory of this political turn. Linda Nicholson's book situates this critical moment in its historical framework, analyzing the concepts and traditions of racial and gender identity that can be traced back to late eighteenth-century Europe and America. She examines how changing ideas about social identity over the last several centuries both helped and hindered successive social movements, and explores the consequences of this historical legacy for the women's and black movements of the 1960s.     Abstract: Biowissenschaftliche Forschungen und deren Anwendung waren in den vergangenen Jahren häufig Gegenstand öffentlicher Auseinandersetzungen. Der Ausgang dieser Debatten hat die Entwicklung der Wissenschaft entscheidend beeinflusst. Die Untersuchung zeigt am Beispiel der öffentlichen Diskurse über die Sequenzierung des menschlichen Erbguts in Deutschland und den USA, wie es den Befürwortern dieser Forschung gelungen ist, eine öffentliche Hegemonie herzustellen: Die öffentliche Debatte wird in beiden Ländern dominiert von wissenschaftlichen Akteuren, die das Projekt der "Entschlüsselung" des menschlichen Erbguts in erster Linie positiv bewerten. Wissenschaftliche und medizinische Deutungen und die damit verbundenen Heilsversprechen dominieren den Diskurs und erzeugen die nötige Legitimation.     Abstract: Using controversy over abortion as a lens through which to compare the political process and role of the media in these two very different democracies, this book examines the contest over meaning that is being waged by social movements, political parties, churches and other social actors. Abortion is a critical battleground for debates over social values in both countries, but the constitutional premises on which arguments rest differ, as do the strategies that movements and parties adopt and the opportunities for influence that are open to them. By examining how these debates are conducted and by whom in light of the normative claims made by democratic theorists, the book also offers a means of judging how well either country lives up to the ideals of democratic debate in practice

    Abstract: Harriet Jacobs, today perhaps the single-most read and studied black American woman of the nineteenth century, has not until recently enjoyed sustained, scholarly analysis.
