    Abstract: In the aftermath of the Second World War, the French government cultivated images of sensual and sophisticated white French women in an attempt to reestablish its global image as a great nation. They promoted the beauty, sexual appeal, and general allure of French women, all while shrinking the boundaries of what was considered beautiful. Charm Offensive explores how this elevation of French femininity created problems on both sides of the equation: the pressure on French women to conform to an exacting physical standard was immense, while the inability of anyone else to access that standard resulted in a sense of failure. Drawing on cultural figures like Air France hostesses, tourism workers, and celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot, Charm Offensive offers an innovative understanding of a tumultuous time of decolonization

Stéphane Hardys kulturhistorische, lexikologische und soziolinguistische Darstellung des largonji du louchébem gewährt exklusive Einblicke in die verborgene Welt einer ganz besonderen Sprechergruppe. Der fast ausschließlich in der gesprochenen Form verwendete louchébem ist eine „verhüllende Sondersprache“. Für Außenstehende ist er nicht verständlich und soll es auch nicht sein. In der Fachliteratur galt der louchébem als nahezu ausgestorben. So hat diese Thematik in der (franko-)romanistischen Sprachwissenschaft bisher nur wenig Beachtung gefunden. Doch der largonji du louchébem ist sehr lebendig. Das weist die Autorin mit ihrer qualitativ-empirischen Studie auf der Basis umfangreichen authentischen Gesprächsmaterials nach.

    Abstract: This book is an in depth, extensive study of Romanian queer cultural products and brings an essential and very needed contribution to the literature on Central and SEE gender studies, post-communism studies, media, and cultural studies, while at the same time being very relevant for transnational queer studies.The book looks at Romanian queer culture ”from inside”, and also from the acknowledgment that the research process is guided by the sensitivity of the approached topics, by the lack of archival footprints, and by a solid dose of media archaeology, especially when looking at the beginning of Romanian LGBT+ activism in the 90s. The book starts from contemporary Romanian cultural products that are either focusing on queer topics or (and sometimes both) produced by queer creators. It looks back at the memories of seminal queer and trans activists in extensive interviews conducted for this volume, and fragmented literary and media sources that cover the most part of the 20th century. Ramona Dima is a researcher in queer and gender studies with focus on South East Europe. Her publications and topics of interests include queer culture, sexuality and migration, LGBT+ activism, and anti-gender politics. She is the recipient of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship hosted by the Centre for Gender Studies, University of Stavanger (2021-2023). Dr. Dima holds a PhD from the University of Bucharest and is the initiator and co-organiser of Queer and Feminist Studies in Southeastern Europe International Conference.

    Abstract: "What is liberalism? Must it be tied to private property, individualism, and state-granted rights? Can it coexist with poverty, in a space that confines its residents? Can it be produced in a way that upends "traditional" interpretations of success? In this rich ethnography of Rocinha, the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Moisés Lino e Silva explores what happens when liberalism is inflected by "deviant" subjects, those considered to be outside the bounds of normative understandings of liberty. Such marginalized visions of freedom are here known as "minoritarian liberalism," a phrase that stands in for overlapping, alternative modes of freedom-be they queer, favela, or peasant. The book explores a wide swath of favela dwellers, some of whom are considered "queer"-such as Natasha Kellem, the author's friend and a charismatic self-declared travesti (a gender identity that signifies transition from masculine to feminine)-alongside others that are treated as "abnormal" simply because they live in favelas. Through these multiple, interconnected visions of freedom, Lino e Silva builds an understanding of liberalism that pushes at the boundaries of anthropological inquiry"--

    Abstract: "Placed in the wider scope of post-war European decolonisation migrations, The Retornados from the Portuguese Colonies in Africa looks at the "Return" of the Portuguese nationals living in the African colonies when they became independent. Using an interdisciplinary research agenda, the book presents a collection of research essays written by experts in the fields of anthropology, history, literature and the arts, that look at a wide range of memory narratives through which the Return-as well as the experiences of war, violence, loss and trauma-have been expressed, contested and internalised in the social realm. These narratives include testimonial accounts from the so-called retornados from Africa and their descendants, as well as works of fiction and public memory-novels, television series, artworks, films or social media-that have come to mediate the public understanding of this past. Through the dialogue between these different narrative modes, this book intends to explore the interplay between official memory, the lived experience and fiction, thus contributing to build an empirical basis to critically discuss the memory of the end of the Portuguese empire within postcolonial Europe.     Abstract: El libro presenta once trabajos sobre un debate historiográfico, el estudio de cómo se construyeron y asimilaron las diferencias humanas y culturales. Aunque concede una atención especial a América hasta el siglo XIX, integra otros espacios relacionados con la España colonial como Filipinas o Marruecos. La percepción del otro, comenzando por quién designa y es designado como otro, no es un tema nuevo en la historiografía, pero sigue vigente por su capacidad de integrar las visiones de dominadores y dominados, por su metodología interdisciplinar (representada en el libro por la colaboración de historiadores, historiadores del arte o antropólogos) y por la naturaleza universal de algunas de sus conclusiones, las cuales permiten relacionarlo con el presente. En resumen, una propuesta amplia e integradora que interroga al pasado sobre un tema definitorio del ser humano y que, por eso, nunca deja de ser actual. Cruces de fronteras son también los procesos de negociación cultural y transculturación en las intersecciones de categorías nacionales, sociales, culturales e identitarias de género, clase, orientación sexual, raza y etnia. Este volumen responde a la crisis actual del hispanismo, reflejada en la obsolescencia de los rígidos modelos filológicos, el canon de las literaturas nacionales y el legado de las ideologías posimperiales, ineficaces para estudiar la diversidad social y cultural, la hibridación y la poscolonialidad en el nuevo contexto global. La cultura española contemporánea no se puede entender plenamente sin considerar sus encrucijadas globales y sus fantasmas poscoloniales. El poshispanismo propone una redefinición de los parámetros de los estudios hispánicos para responder a esta compleja realidad, ampliando los marcos y metodologías de los estudios culturales ibéricos y abriéndose hacia perspectivas transatlánticas y transpacíficas. La presente investigación examina estas encrucijadas reales y simbólicas de las prácticas culturales y representaciones literarias y visuales en el ámbito poshispánico, en el marco de los siglos XX y XXI.

    Abstract: The comparative investigation of the acquisition of gender in Spanish by early and late bilinguals of different language combinations is highly debated and crucial as the phenomenon of gender involves grammatical features that differ in all three languages under investigation. Against this background, both early and late bilinguals face an arduous learning task which differs in complexity. Couched within a generative framework, the empirical study focuses on 257 participants with different levels of proficiency in Spanish ranging from low to advanced, and through a series of tests aims to discover which extra-linguistic and intra-linguistic factors act as triggers for non-native outcomes in adult heritage speakers and L2 learners. The observed morphological variability is argued not to stem from a representational (i.e. syntactic) deficit, but rather from a mapping problem in L2 learners and heritage speakers. Successful attainment in terms of gender is possible but dependent on the interplay between various extralinguistic and linguistic factors

    Abstract: Decadent Orientalisms presents a sustained critique of the ways Orientalism and decadence have formed a joint discursive mode of the imperial imagination. Attentive to historical and literary configurations of language, race, religion, and power, Fieni shows the importance of understanding Western discourses of Eastern decline and obsolescence together with Arab and Islamic responses in which the language of decadence returns as a characteristic of the West.Taking seriously Edward Said’s claim that Orientalism is a "style of having power," Fieni works historically through the aesthetic and ideological effects of Orientalist style, showing how it is at once comparative, descriptive, and performative. Orientalism, the book argues, relies upon decadence as the figure through which its positivist scientific claims become redistributed as speech acts—"truths" that establish dominance. Rather than attending to Orientalism as a repertoire of clichés and stereotypes, Decadent Orientalisms considers the systemic epistemological consequences of the diffuse, yet coherent network of institutions that have constituted Orientalism’s power

    Abstract: Pierre Bourdieu in Hispanic Literature and Culture is a collective reflection on the value of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s work for the study of Spanish and Latin American literature and culture.     Abstract: Abseits der Brisanz des aktuellen Migrationsdiskurses beleuchtet Anne Thietz die Funktion von Sprache in Identitätskonstruktionen am Beispiel der sprachlich unauffälligen Hugenottennachfahren. Fluchtgeschichte, Konfession und das Französische sollen in den 300 Jahren seit Einwanderung zur Bildung einer Gruppenidentität beigetragen haben. Anne Thietz zeigt mit Fokus auf Sprachbiographien, welche Elemente hugenottisches Sein heute bestimmen. Auch als Plädoyer für den Erhalt der umstrittenen Begriffe Identität und Sprachidentität werden diese schließlich durch die interdisziplinäre Verbindung von Forschungstheorie und -methode neu modelliert und für empirische Untersuchungen anschlussfähig gemacht.

    Abstract: Trans-afrohispanismos: puentes culturales críticos entre África, Latinoamérica y España is an innovative approach to Afro-Hispanic Studies. It focuses on the connections between peoples, territories, and media of expression at the confluence of Africa and the Hispanic world. The volume’s contributors apply perspectives from their respective areas of specialization to their examination of transcultural interactions in a diverse range of contexts. These include Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara, Spain, Morocco, Afro-descendant communities in Latin America and transnational spaces generated by digital technologies and contemporary migration. The volume offers an expanded understanding of Afro-Hispanic Studies and serves as a model of inquiry in a field whose hallmark is the mobility of people and knowledge. Trans-afrohispanismos: puentes culturales críticos entre África, Latinoamérica y España es una aproximación innovadora a los Estudios Afrohispánicos. Destaca las conexiones entre gentes, territorios y medios de expresión en la confluencia de África y el mundo hispánico. Estos incluyen Guinea Ecuatorial, el Sáhara Occidental, España, Marruecos, comunidades de afrodescendientes en América Latina y los espacios transnacionales originados por las tecnologías digitales y la migración. Este libro ofrece una visión más amplia de los Estudios Afrohispánicos. Adicionalmente, sirve de modelo de investigación en un campo cuya seña de identidad es la movilidad de gentes y conocimientos.     Abstract: This book investigates the lives and stories of queer Maghrebi and Maghrebi French men who moved to or grew up in contemporary France. It combines original French language data from my ethnographic fieldwork in France with a wide array of recent narratives and cultural productions including performance art and photography, films, novels, autobiographies, published letters, and other first-person essays to investigate how these queer men living in France and the diaspora stake claims to time and space, construct kinship, and imagine their own future. By closely examining empirical evidence from the lived experiences of these queer Maghrebi French-speakers, this book presents a variety of paths available to these men who articulate and pioneer their own sexual difference within their families of origin and contemporary French society. These sexual minorities of North African origin may explain their homosexuality in terms of a "modern coming out" narrative when living in France. Nevertheless, they are able to negotiate cultural hybridity and flexible language, temporalities, and filiations, that combine elements from a variety of discourses on family, honor, face-saving, the symbolic order of gender differences, gender equality, as well as the western and largely neoliberal constructs of individualism and sexual autonomy

    Abstract: Hildegart Rodríguez (1914-1933) war die einzige prominente weibliche Vertreterin der spanischen Sexualreformbewegung der 1930er Jahre. Sie veröffentlichte dreizehn sexualpolitische Bücher, die bis heute als emanzipativ und wissenschaftlich innovativ gelten. Rodríguez' Forderungen waren in vielerlei Hinsicht durchaus radikal.     Abstract: This book analyzes and contextualizes Auerbach ’s life and mind in the wide ideological, philological, and historical context of his time, especially the rise of Aryan philology and its eventual triumph with the Nazi Revolution or the Hitler Revolution in Germany of 1933. It deals specifically with his struggle against the premises of Aryan philology, based on völkisch mysticism and Nazi historiography, which eliminated the Old Testament from German Kultur and Volksgeist in particular, and Western culture and civilization in general. It examines in detail his apologia for, or defense and justification of, Western Judaeo-Christian humanist tradition at its gravest existential moment. It discusses Auerbach’s ultimate goal, which was to counter the overt racist tendencies and völkish ideology in Germany, or the belief in the Community of Blood and Fate of the German people, which sharply distinguished between Kultur and civilization and glorified völkisch nationalism over European civilization. The volume includes an analysis of the entire twenty chapters of Auerbach’s most celebrated book: Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature, 1946

    Abstract: Schmutz ist Materie am falschen Ort, eine Kategorie, die nur existiert, weil sie sich Platzanweisungen kultureller Ordnungen widersetzt. Eine Ästhetik des Schmutzigen artikuliert sich in Aushandlungen von kulturellen Formen und Normen, sozialen und politischen Machtkonstellationen. Das Buch untersucht die Beziehungen zwischen ästhetischen Modellen und Modellen des Zusammenlebens, die über den prominenten textuellen Ort von ›Schmutz‹ in karibischen Literaturen ausgehandelt werden. In der Karibik wurde die figurative Korrelation zwischen Schmutz, Abfall, Unreinheit und Gesellschaft im Kontext des Kolonialismus v.a. zur Rechtfertigung rassistischer Unterdrückungspraktiken instrumentalisiert. Ende des 20. Jh.s dominieren Entwürfe, die positiv Bezug auf Motivik und Metaphorik der ›Unreinheit‹ nehmen. Mit schmutzigem Realismus und karibischem Cyberpunk wird die Präferenz von Unreinheitsmodellen als imaginative Basis von Kultur(-kritik) allerdings hinterfragt.

    Abstract: Die Brachfläche hat längst ihren Ruf als städtebauliches Ärgernis verloren und ist zu einem Hoffnungs- und Möglichkeitsraum für neue Formen urbanen Lebens avanciert. Im Rahmen dieser Neubewertung spielte sowohl in der Architekturtheorie als auch in Literatur und Kunst der französische Begriff des terrain vague eine entscheidende Rolle. Dennoch ist bei der Betrachtung der Stadtbrache die Geschichte des in der französischen Romantik und Moderne verankerten Begriffs bisher übersehen worden. Dieser Band liefert daher eine historische und systematische Untersuchung des Konzepts des terrain vague.
