    Abstract: "This book uses the mythological hero Heracles as a lens for investigating the nature of heroic violence in archaic and classical Greek literature, from Homer through to Aristophanes. Heracles was famous for his great victories as much as for his notorious failures. Driving each of these acts is his heroic violence, an ambivalent force that can offer communal protection as well as cause grievous harm. Drawing on evidence from epic, lyric poetry, tragedy, and comedy, this work illuminates the strategies used to justify, constrain, and deflate the threatening aspects of violence. The mixed results of these strategies also demonstrate how the figure of Heracles inherently - and stubbornly - resists reform. The diverse character of Heracles' violent acts reveals an enduring tension in understanding violence: is violence a negative individual trait, that is to say, the manifestation of an internal state of hostility? Or is it one specific means to a preconceived end, rather like an instrument whose employment may or may not be justified? Katherine Lu Hsu explores these evolving attitudes towards individual violence in the ancient Greek world while also shedding light on timeless debates about the nature of violence itself"--

    Abstract: This doctoral thesis examines the trends and patterns of premature mortality in the German Baltic Sea region in past and present. Based on demographic methods, it shows that the crucial determinants have changed over the course of the epidemiologic transition. Nutrition and sanitation were decisive factors in the 19th century, which led to significant variations in infant mortality by social class. Today, the access to adequate health care and risk-relevant behavior play a more important role in the region, with men in the eastern part showing the highest rates of avoidable mortality.〈eng〉
    Abstract: Diese Dissertation untersucht die Trends und Muster vorzeitiger Sterblichkeit im deutschen Ostseeraum in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Basierend auf demografischen Methoden zeigt sie, dass sich die zentralen Determinanten im Laufe des epidemiologischen Übergangs gewandelt haben. Ernährung und Hygiene waren entscheidende Faktoren im 19. Jahrhundert, was zu signifikanten Variationen in der Säuglingssterblichkeit je nach sozialer Schicht führte. Heute spielen der Zugang zu adäquater medizinischer Versorgung und risikorelevantes Verhalten eine wichtigere Rolle in der Region, in welcher Männer im Osten die höchsten Raten vermeidbarer Sterblichkeit aufweisen.〈ger〉

    Abstract: Who benefits from smart technology? Whose interests are served when we trade our personal data for convenience and connectivity? Smart technology is everywhere: smart umbrellas that light up when rain is in the forecast; smart cars that relieve drivers of the drudgery of driving; smart toothbrushes that send your dental hygiene details to the cloud. Nothing is safe from smartification. In Too Smart, Jathan Sadowski looks at the proliferation of smart stuff in our lives and asks whether the tradeoff--exchanging our personal data for convenience and connectivity--is worth it. Who benefits from smart technology? Sadowski explains how data, once the purview of researchers and policy wonks, has become a form of capital. Smart technology, he argues, is driven by the dual imperatives of digital capitalism: extracting data from, and expanding control over, everything and everybody. He looks at three domains colonized by smart technologies' collection and control systems: the smart self, the smart home, and the smart city. The smart self involves more than self-tracking of steps walked and calories burned; it raises questions about what others do with our data and how they direct our behavior--whether or not we want them to. The smart home collects data about our habits that offer business a window into our domestic spaces. And the smart city, where these systems have space to grow, offers military-grade surveillance capabilities to local authorities. Technology gets smart from our data. We may enjoy the conveniences we get in return (the refrigerator says we're out of milk!), but, Sadowski argues, smart technology advances the interests of corporate technocratic power--and will continue to do so unless we demand oversight and ownership of our data.

    Abstract: This book explores how news media construct social issues and events and thereby convey certain perceptions within the scope of framing theory. By operationalizing media framing as a process of interpretation through defining problem, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments and suggesting solutions, the book proposes a systematic and transparent approach to images in news discourse. Based on a frame analysis, it examines how German news media framed a list of China-related issues and events, and thereby conveyed particular beliefs and opinions on this country. Moreover, it investigates whether there were dominant patterns of interpretation and the extent to which diverse views were evident by comparing two major daily newspapers with opposite political orientations - the FAZ and the taz. Motivated by the relationship between image and reality, the book explores image formation and persistence from media construction of meaning and human cognitive complexity in perceiving others. Media select certain issues and events and then interpret them from particular perspectives. A variety of professional and non-professional factors behind news making may result in biased representations. In addition, from a social psychological perspective, inaccurate perceptions of foreign cultures may arise from categorical thinking, biased processing of stimulus information, intergroup conflicts of interest and in-group favoritism. Accordingly, whether media coverage deviates from reality is not the main concern of this book; instead, it emphasizes the underlying logics upon which the conclusions and judgments were drawn. It therefore contributes to a rational understanding of Western discourse and holds practical implications for both Chinese public diplomacy and a more constructive role of news media in promoting the understanding of others

    Abstract: "Museums, Emotion, and Memory Culture examines the politics of emotion in history museums, combining approaches and concerns from a range of disciplines. Exploring the meanings and politics of memory contests in Turkey, the book asks what it means for museums to imbue the past with political agendas through spectacular, emotive representations. Providing an in-depth examination of emotional practice in two Turkish museums that present contrasting representations of the national past, the book analyses relationships between memory, governmentality, identity and emotion. The museums discussed celebrate Ottoman and Early Republican pasts, linking to geo- and party politics, people's senses of who they are, popular memory culture, and competing national stories and identities vis-à-vis Europe and the wider world. This book proposes a new research paradigm that incorporates new features and factors of communication and a new theoretical framework named "immersive communication". Pointing out that communication today has moved beyond the bi-directional, mass communication of "the second media age" to ubiquitous, immersive communication in "the third media age", the author discusses the definition, characteristics, information structure, and models of immersive communication using various examples including Fitbit, Apple, 4G and other technologies, while envisioning future applications of the immersive communication model.     Abstract: Although computer-based personal assistants like Siri are increasingly ubiquitous, few users stop to ask what it means that some assistants are gendered female, others male. Why is Star Trek's computer coded as female, while HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey is heard as male? By examining how gender is built into these devices, author Liz W. Faber explores contentious questions around gender: its fundamental constructedness, the rigidity of the gender binary, and culturally situated attitudes on male and female embodiment. Faber begins by considering talking spaceships like those in Star Trek, the film Dark Star, and the TV series Quark, revealing the ideologies that underlie space-age progress. She then moves on to an intrepid decade-by-decade investigation of computer voices, tracing the evolution from the masculine voices of the '70s and '80s to the feminine ones of the '90s and '00s. Faber ends her account in the present, with incisive looks at the film Her and Siri herself. Going beyond current scholarship on robots and AI to focus on voice-interactive computers, The Computer's Voice breaks new ground in questions surrounding media, technology, and gender.     Abstract: "INFORMATION ACTIVISM surveys the media produced by lesbian feminist archivists, librarians, historians, and hotline workers over the past 50 years, showing how volunteer-driven activist information projects formed the basis for queer digital media practices today. Recognizing a gap in the resources available to queer women and in how institutional libraries and archives represented lesbian history, these women decided to generate and index the information themselves. Cait McKinney considers how these information activists prioritized feminist theory and politics in their work, seeking to create media that were accessible, collaborative, and grassroots.
    Abstract: McKinney also looks at the evolution of lesbian feminist information projects from the 1970s to the present, charting media formats and distribution methods as they moved from paper-based methods to computerized and other new digital technologies, while the language used to categorize and tag information also changed to become more trans-inclusive. The book first looks at lesbian newsletters and periodicals that proliferated from the early 1970s to the mid-1990s to produce networks of lesbian feminist information infrastructure. These newsletters-such as Matrices, Network News, Grapevine, and Telewoman-included grassroots materials like hotline numbers, calendars of events, overviews of new primary source materials for researchers, book announcements and reviews, as well as fundraising appeals.
    Abstract: Next, McKinney considers the call logs and archived records of New York's Lesbian Switchboard and Toronto's Lesbian Phone Line, which attest to the intense emotional tone and economies of care involved in the hotlines. The third chapter turns to paper card indexes created in the 1980s, including "The Lesbian Periodicals Index" and "Black Lesbians: An Annotated Bibliography," as a form of media that allowed lesbian feminists to deliberately construct and narrate lesbian history in their own language, while making lesbian information coherent and intelligible for both insiders and outsiders. Finally, McKinney examines how the often-improvised digitization practices employed at the Lesbian Herstory Archives challenge and enrich understandings of technological values like access, usability, engagement, and preservation.

    Abstract: For decades, lesbian feminists across the United States and Canada have created information to build movements and survive in a world that doesn't want them. InInformation Activism Cait McKinney traces how these women developed communication networks, databases, and digital archives that formed the foundation for their work. Often learning on-the-fly and using everything from index cards to computers, these activists brought people and their visions of justice together to organize, store, and provide access to information. Focusing on the transition from paper to digital-based archival techniques from the 1970s to the present, McKinney shows how media technologies animate the collective and unspectacular labor that sustains social movements, including their antiracist and trans-inclusive endeavors. By bringing sexuality studies to bear on media history, McKinney demonstrates how groups with precarious access to control over information create their own innovative and resourceful techniques for generating and sharing knowledge

    Abstract: The historical and cultural space of the Black Atlantic - a diasporic world of forced and voluntary migrations - has long provided fertile ground for the construction and reconstruction of new forms of classicism. From the aftermath of slavery up to the present day, black authors, intellectuals, and artists in the Atlantic world have shaped and reshaped the cultural legacies of classical antiquity in a rich variety of ways in order to represent their identities andexperiences and reflect on modern conceptions of race, nation, and identity. The studies presented in this volume range across the Anglophone, Francophone, and Hispanophone worlds, including literary studies of authors such as Derek Walcott, Marlene NourbeSe Philip, and Junot Diaz, biographical andhistorical studies, and explorations of race and classicism in the visual arts. They offer reflections on the place of classicism in contemporary conflicts and debates over race and racism, and on the intersections between classicism, race, gender, and social status, demonstrating how the legacies of ancient Greece and Rome have been used to buttress racial hierarchies, but also to challenge racism and Eurocentric reconstructions of antiquity

    Abstract: In Zeiten von Smartphone und Social Web die Medienkritik von Günther Anders und Theodor W. Adorno zu behandeln, scheint auf den ersten Blick ein antiquiertes Vorhaben zu sein. Dabei wird die Auseinandersetzung mit ihren Gedanken zu Mensch, Gesellschaft und Medien immer wichtiger. Die Seele des Menschen ist inmitten der totalen Computerisierung vom verzifferten Lärm und von den grellen Bildschirmen umstellt. Das Andere, »Nichtidentische« rückt mit der Digitalisierung von allem und jedem in immer weitere Ferne. Mit der hier vorgenommenen Relektüre lassen sich die kritischen Theorien von Günther Anders und Theodor W. Adorno zuspitzen. In der totalen Überhöhung der ins-trumentellen ratio (Adorno) in Form von obskuren Datenbergen lässt sich ein neuer Höhepunkt der Dialektik der Aufklärung verorten. Der Rückfall der aufgeklärten Gesellschaft in den Mythos ereignet sich ganz konkret in der digitalen Totalität – wir stecken mit Big Data mitten drin
