Abstract:
Ein junger Mann schlägt zwei ca. 3 m lange Palmholzteile zurecht, kürzt und bearbeitet sie, meißelt eine Mittelrille heraus, poliert sie, klebt sie mit Harz zusammen und umwickelt sie. Er schnitzt Pfeile, einen Reinigungsstock, höhlt zwei Baumfrüchte für die Baumwoll-Pfeilmanschetten aus und vergiftet Pfeilspitzen auf einem Froschrücken (Pyllobates bicolor).
Abstract:
A young man makes a blowgun. His first task is to select a suitable tree in the forest. He brings home, however, only certain selected thinned-down sections as carrying an entire trunk would be too difficult. When he has selected a suitable length of sections for the two halves of the blowgun, he brings them home and begins to work. First the blowgun is made: two long palm wood sections are thinned down to the desired length with the aid of a machete. Then a central groove is drilled and both halves glued together with resin and then wrapped up with bast. The various accessories to the blowgun are then manufactured. The bamboo quiver is made from a piece of very thick bamboo, and then, with the use of a chisel, a lid is fitted on top of it. The darts are prepared from a palm, by splitting away thin slivers of the tree. A ramrod is also made for cleaning the blowgun, and this also comes from a palm tree. Finally the cotton container is made from a fruit nut which is hollowed out especially for this purpose. The poison for the darts is extracted from bright yellow, fairly large frogs of the species Phyllobates bicolor, which he has already captured. By rubbing the tip of the darts against the back of the frog, whose skin secretion is extraordinary venomous, the darts are then rendered poisonous.
