Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Indigenous Sociology challenges the traditional way that Indigenous Peoples and Societies are understood within the discipline. It does so by bringing together 40 leading and emerging Indigenous scholars from across the CANZUS Countries to provide, for the first time, an authoritative, state of the art survey of Indigenous sociological thinking. These authors demonstrate that the Indigenous sociological voice is a new sociological paradigm and demonstrates a distinctively Indigenous methodological approach.

Abstract: Critical thinking and online reading need to go hand in hand--but they often don't. Students click, swipe, and believe because they don't know how to do otherwise. At times, so do we. And that's a problem. Fighting Fake News combats this challenge by helping you model how to read, myth-bust, truth-test, and respond in ways that lead to wisdom rather than reactivity. No matter what content you teach, the lessons showcased here provide engaging, collaborative reading and discussion experiences so students can: Notice how teacher and peers read digital content, to be mindful of how various reading pathways influence perception Identify the author background, the website sponsor, and other evidence that help set a piece in context Stress-test the facts by evaluating news sources, reading laterally, and other critical reading strategies Use "Reader's Rules of Notice" to learn to identify common rhetorical devices used to influence the reader Be aware of how for-profit social media platforms feed on our responses to narrow rather than widen our reading landscape We are still in the wild west era of the digital age, scrambling to impart a safer, ethical framework for evaluating information. Thankfully, it distills to one mission: teach students (and ourselves) how to think critically, and we will forever have the tools to fight fake news.

Abstract: Although typically conceived in terms of space, Segregated Time argues that racial segregation and inequality are also sustained through impositions on human time. Drawing on a range of Africana, Latinx, and Indigenous political thought, P.J. Brendese demonstrates the way in which time is weaponized against people of color and advances a theory of white time as a possessive, acquisitive, colonizing force. Segregated Time critically examines the racialization of those defined as as behind the times, how racial others are cast out of time, perpetually forced to "do time" in a carceral society, and to perish in the segregated times of climate apocalypse.

Abstract: Released in 1919, Anders als die Andern is a remarkable artefact of the pre-Stonewall homosexual rights movement of early-twentieth-century Germany. Ervin Malakaj shows how the film's "mournful cinema" is key to its endurance, fostering connection through emotions and acting as a springboard to engage in an intergenerational queer struggle.

Abstract: Devilry, Deviance, and Public Sphere draws on criminology and social theory to explore and expand social historical themes in the analysis of perceptions of deviance and crime in the eighteenth century. Developing the theoretical device of Folk Devils and Moral Panics, instigated by Stanley Cohen and developed by Erich Goode and Nachman Ben-Yehuda, the book explores the social discovery of, and public response to, crime and deviance in that period. Detailed contemporary case studies of youth violence, sexual deviance, and substance abuse are used to argue that Hanoverian London and its novel media can be identified as the initiating historical site for what might now be termed public order moral panics. In doing so, Hamerton provides a vivid historical lineage of moral panic which traverses much of the long eighteenth century. The book considers social change, allowing for points of theoretical convergence and divergence to be observed, whilst exploring historical models of public opinion, media, deviance and crime alongside the unique character and power located within the burgeoning Metropolis. Devilry, Deviance, and Public Sphere seeks to make an important contribution to the understanding of both moral panic theory and the historiography of crime and deviance, and posits that the current discourse on folk devils and moral panics can be extended and enriched via the exploration of the moral crises of earlier centuries. Christopher Hamerton is Deputy Director of the Institute of Criminal Justice Research in the School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom

Abstract: In the nineteenth century, global systems of capitalism and empire knit the North Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds into international networks in contest over the meanings of slavery and freedom. Sojourners, Sultans, and Slaves mines multinational archives to illuminate the Atlantic reverberations of US mercantile projects, "free labor" experiments, and slaveholding in western Indian Ocean societies. Gunja SenGupta and Awam Amkpa profile transnational human rights campaigns. They show how the discourses of poverty, kinship, and care could be adapted to defend servitude in different parts of the world, revealing the tenuous boundaries that such discourses shared with liberal contractual notions of freedom. An intercontinental cast of empire builders and émigrés, slavers and reformers, a "cotton queen" and courtesans, and fugitive "slaves" and concubines populates the pages, fleshing out on a granular level the interface between the personal, domestic, and international politics of "slavery in the East" in the age of empire. By extending the transnational framework of US slavery and abolition histories beyond the Atlantic, Gunja SenGupta and Awam Amkpa recover vivid stories and prompt reflections on the comparative workings of subaltern agency.

Abstract: This book re-writes the history of a critical if poorly known epoch--the Medieval period in North America (800-1300 CE). It draws on the latest archaeological evidence from north and south of the Mexican border as well as later sources from sixteenth-century Spanish conquistadors to reveal powerful links among Indigenous civilizations-from Mesoamerica to the Southwest and the Mississippi Valley-and their shared responses to climate change.

Abstract: Ayman al-Zawahiri--co-founder of al Qaeda and successor to bin Laden--was one of the most influential terrorists of the modern era. In the first in-depth biography of the Egyptian doctor and ideologue, Sajjan M. Gohel meticulously unpacks al-Zawahiri's long career, which spanned over 50 years, in the growth and evolution of transnational terrorism. From an illustrious Egyptian family, al-Zawahiri chose to rebel against his own society and the international order. Through his travels across multiple continents, the Egyptian found himself in many of the places where history was made. A pioneer of terrorist strategies and tactics, al-Zawahiri left an indelible legacy for al-Qaeda and other terrorists to build upon.

Abstract: This book explains the feedback loop that generates ever-increasing polarization--the signature feature of contemporary American politics. This loop is powered by the discipline exerted by the respective political parties and their activists on both their Congressional members and their district candidates. The authors show that tight party discipline produces party delegations in Congress that are widely separated from one another but each ideologically concentrated--in a word, polarized.

Abstract: The trillions of miles we drive each year are just as destructive to our natural environment as any of the better known threats, such as habitat loss or intensive farming. Traffication does for road traffic what Silent Spring did for agrochemicals: awakening us from our collective road-blindness and opening up a whole new chapter in conservation.

Abstract: The pandemic left disorder and crises in its wake everywhere it struck. Drawing on disciplines including public health, politics, and socioeconomics, this book tracks the spread of COVID-19 to weave a coherent picture that explains how scientists learnt about the virus, how authorities reacted around the world, and how different societies coped. Written by a leading team of public health, policy, and economics experts, this volume provides an in-depth analysis of various countries' responses to the onset of the pandemic, as well as suggestions to increase capacity and capability to fight future pandemics. The first part of the book provides an overview of global governance and international cooperation, economic and social consequences of the outbreak, and breakthroughs in mathematical modelling and COVID-19 vaccines. The second part of the book examines and compares specific countries and regions through the lens of good governance, social contract, and political trust. This book is essential for anyone seeking to learn from the impact of COVID-19, particularly professionals and policy-makers, as well as those with a general interest in governance and pandemics.

Abstract: Swearwords have an almost magical power to shock and offend. What explains this? What can we learn when we take a close, serious look at swearwords and how they work? What do we find when we explore, for example, what exactly it is we're doing when we swear, or why people are more tolerant of f***--when they know full well what it stands for--than they are of the swearword it refers to? Philosopher Rebecca Roache takes readers on an illuminating and entertaining search for answers to these and other puzzling questions about swearing. As she argues, swearing is uniquely powerful because unlike other etiquette breaches it is designed to offend. But that is not all that swearing can do. It has the power to bring people together, help them accept one another, and relate to one another as equals.

Abstract: "Based on original ethnographic research in a multicultural neighbourhood in The Hague (the Netherlands), this book gives detailed insights into the challenges, negotiations, and resistances girls with Moroccan-Dutch and Muslim backgrounds face in the world of street football, one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Kathrine van den Bogert traces the experiences of teenage girls who play football in the public playgrounds in their neighbourhood, as well as in a girls' football competition the girls have set up themselves: Football Girls United. She addresses how race, ethnicity, religion, and gender are entangled in the access to and construction of the public street football spaces, such as football courts, urban playgrounds, and public squares. While often Muslim girls in football are stigmatised or excluded based on their religious and ethnic backgrounds, this book emphasises their street football practices as critical and creative ways of inclusion and belonging, both in football and in wider Dutch society. By focussing on a domain largely absent in religion and gender research, namely sport, this book brings to the forth new and innovative perspectives on religion, Islam, gender, and difference."--...
