    Kurzfassung: Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass man innerhalb einer Arbeit sowohl einen generativ-grammatischen als auch einen soziolinguistischen Ansatz findet. Die vorliegende Studie versucht diesen Brückenschlag anhand von Daten aus der französischen Interrogativsyntax, u.a. zur wh-in-situ-Form, zur stilistischen Inversion, zur langen Extraktion und zur que-qui-Problematik. Gradierte Grammatikalitätsurteile bilden die empirische Hauptdatenquelle, wobei auch Daten aus qualitativen Interviewerhebungen und Lesezeitmessungen einbezogen werden. Zugleich werden methodologische Fragen zur Messbarkeit von Grammatikalität behandelt. Die Auswertung des empirischen Materials revidiert und präzisiert einige vertraute Auffassungen. Beispielsweise erweist sich die Evidenzgrundlage für die Annahme von LF-Bewegung bei wh-in-situ-Strukturen des Französischen als überraschend dünn. In einem weiteren Schritt wird der Einfluss externer Faktoren auf die Grammatikalitätsurteile statistisch untersucht. Hierbei beschränkt sich die Arbeit nicht auf den Standardsatz soziodemographischer Merkmale. Sie bezieht das Lebensstilkonzept aus der soziokulturellen Theorie von Pierre Bourdieu ein, das sich in der Tat als besonders relevant für die Identifikation und Erklärung von Variationsphänomenen in der Grammatik (z. B. Präferenzen für bestimmte Wortstellungsvarianten) erweist. Diese Studie zeigt, wie die gemeinsame Berücksichtigung einer grammatiktheoretischen und sozialstrukturellen Analyse zu einem präziseren Verständnis der französischen wh-Interrogation führt.

    Kurzfassung: Differences in attitudes to death and dying in two distinct social classes, the ecclesiastics and the nobility. The theory of the three estates made clear distinctions between the functions of the two estates which comprised the elite of medieval society: the oradores (ecclesiastics) and the defensores (warriors or nobility).They had different lifestyles, clothing and ways of thinking about life. With regard to death, the responses dictated by Christian theology conflicted with the demands of the defensor ideology, based on the defence of individual honour, the pursuit of fama and the display of earthly power. This book charts the progress of the dying from their preparations for death, through their 'good' or 'bad' deaths, to their burials and otherworldly fates and also analyses the responses of the bereaved. Through the use of pre-fifteenth-century texts it is possible to demonstrate that the conflict between the orador and defensor ideologies did not begin in the fifteenth century, but rather had a much older origin, and it is suggested that the conflict continued after 1500. Textual sources include the Siete partidas, wills, chronicles, religious works such as the Arte de bien morir and literary works such as Cárcel de Amor and Celestina

    Kurzfassung: This original and compelling study argues against the traditional identification of Arthur as a king in Celtic Britain. Instead, Graham Anderson explores the evidence for two much older figures, known to classical writers as kings of Arcadia and Lydia, over a millenium before. He shows how these kings can be clearly connected with traditional Arthurian characters and adventure, including an ancient Gawain, a Lady of Shallott, and a predecessor of Excalibur, and shows that the Arthurian universe found in Welsh tales and French romances is already anticipated in these earliest of Arthurian materials. This radical reassessment of the Arthurian legends provides a new perspective on on age-old historical puzzle, and will provoke debate amongst Classical and Medieval scholars and Arthurian enthusiasts.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Welche Entwicklung erfuhr der Antisemitismus in Spanien, als nach dem Vertreibungsedikt (1492) das Land nicht länger ein Ort der Koexistenz verschiedener ethnischer Gruppen war? Dies war das zentrale Thema eines Kolloquiums in Konstanz (Mai 2000), dessen Ergebnisse hier vorgestellt werden. An dem Kolloquium nahmen Anthropologen, Historiker und Literaturwissenschaftler teil. Diese interdisziplinäre Annäherung konzentrierte sich auf die Faktoren, Räume, Zahlen und Stimmen, die in den antijüdischen (und damit antisemitischen) Diskurs involviert waren, sowohl in ihrem historischen Kontext als auch in ihrer literarischen Darstellung. Bei dem letzten Thema ist dem apologetischen Aspekt ebensoviel Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet worden wie dem kritischen.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: What development did anti-Semitism take in Spain when, after the Banishment Edict (1492), the country was no longer a locus of co-existence for different ethnic groups? This was the topic central to the colloquium in Konstanz (May 2000), the results of which are presented here. The colloquium united anthropologists, historians and literary scholars. This interdisciplinary approach focused on the factors, spaces, figures and voices involved in anti-Jewish (and hence anti-Semitic) discourse, both in their historical context and in their literary representation. On the latter issue, as much attention is given to the apologetic as to the critical aspect.

The data for the book are Mexican immigrants' personal experience narratives and chronicles of their border crossings into the United States. Embracing a view of identity as a construct firmly grounded in discourse and interaction, the author examines and illustrates the multiple threads that connect the local expression and negotiation of identity to the wider social contexts that frame the experience of migration, from material conditions of life in the United States to mainstream discourses about race and color.     Kurzfassung: Women's Rights and Women's Lives In France 1944-1968 explores key aspects of the everyday lives of women between the Liberation of France and the events of May '68. At the end of the war, French women believed that a new era was beginning and that equality had been won. The redefined postwar public sphere required women's participation for the new democracy, and women's labour power for reconstruction, but equally important was the belief in women's role as mothers. Over the next two decades, the tensions between competing visions of women's `proper place' dominated discourses of womanhood as well as policy decisions, and had concrete implications for women's lives. Working from a wide range of sources, including women's magazines, prescriptive literature, documentation from political parties, government reports, parliamentary debates and personal memoirs, Claire Duchen follows the debates concerning womanhood, women's rights and women's lives through the 1944-1968 period and grounds them in the changing reality of postwar France.

    Kurzfassung: The Bibliografia Informatizzata Leopardiana (BIL) is the result of a research project that took shape on the occasion of the second centenary of the birth of the poet and developed over the span of 2000-2002. The project envisioned the organisation and publication in a digital corpus of the vast bibliography on Leopardi, up to then disseminated not only in the volumes of the Bibliografia leopardiana, but also in other partial bibliographies, indices, catalogues etc. Implementation of the project engaged four Research Units from the universities of Florence, Macerata, Cagliari, and Rome «La Sapienza». The book contains the User Manual for the BIL (version 1.0) and the description of the project

    Kurzfassung: Main description: This third edition of Köhler's book (1st edition 1956, 2nd expanded edition 1970 as Vol. 97 of the series »Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie«) in an inexpensive study format restores the availability of a standard work of medieval studies of essential interest for scholars and students in Romance studies, German studies, English studies, and cultural studies. Combining stylistic brilliance with unsparing criticism of one-sided interpretations, Köhler situates Chrestien de Troyes' courtly romances in the social and literary context of the 12th and 13th centuries. With their emphasis on the sociology of literature, Köhler's analyses have lost nothing of their immediate relevance for the constitution of an approach to literature that increasingly defines literary criticism in terms of cultural studies.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: In einer Zeit der Globalisierung und der Nivellierung nationaler Strukturen durch Großorganisationen wie die Europäische Union kommt der Kulturpolitik als Faktor der Identitätsstiftung herausragende und mit Sicherheit weiter wachsende Bedeutung zu. Italien hatte für die deutsche Kulturpolitik immer einen besonderen Stellenwert, was sich etwa an der Vielzahl der mit der Vermittlung deutscher Kultur in Italien beauftragten Institutionen ablesen läßt. Das vorliegende Buch gibt eine Einführung in die Geschichte der kulturellen Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Italien und führt in die rechtlichen Grundlagen der deutschen Kulturpolitik in Italien ein. Es wird gezeigt, mit welchen Vorurteilen und nationalen Stereotypen sich die deutsche Kulturpolitik in Italien auseinanderzusetzen hat, wo also Aufgaben und Herausforderungen für die Zukunft liegen. In einem ausführlichen Dokumentationsteil werden die zentralen kulturvermittelnden Institutionen der Bundesrepublik in Italien vorgestellt.

C'est au moins ce que souhaite Paul Sebag dans la Préface de la dernière édition des Mille et Un Jours (Bourgois, 1980). Or, cet espoir n'est pas sans soulever quelques questions. Applying Cartesian principles to 'the Woman Question', he demonstrated by rational deduction that the supposedly 'self-evident' inequality of the sexes was nothing more than unfounded prejudice. Poullain published three books (anonymously) on this topic in the 1670s, all of which are included in English translation in this volume

Jahrhundert« revidiert, von einem konstruktivistischen Verständnis von Nation ausgehend, die komparatistische Frage nach dem "Bild", das die Literatur von dem Fremden vermittelt. Aus sozial-, literatur- und geschichtswissenschaftlicher Perspektive untersuchen die Beiträge am Beispiel von deutschen und französischen Texten zwischen Aufklärung und Vormärz das Verhältnis von Nationalstereotypen, Wahrnehmung bzw. Darstellung des Fremden und Identitätsbildung.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: Proceeding from a constructivist understanding of the term 'nation', this volume containing the papers delivered at the Stuttgart colloquium on »German-French Perception Patterns and the Concept of National Identity in the 18th and 19th Centuries« re-views the question of the 'image' of otherness and the foreign conveyed by literature. From a sociological, literary and historical perspective the articles examine German and French texts from the period between the Enlightenment and the Vormärz to elucidate the relations between national stereotypes, awareness and representation of otherness, and identity formation.

    Kurzfassung: The first well-researched contrastive pragmatic analysis of requests and apologies in British English and Uruguayan Spanish. It takes the form of a cross-cultural corpus-based analysis using male and female native speakers of each language and systematically alternating the same social variables in both cultures.The data are elicited from a non-prescriptive open role-play yielding requests and apologies. The analysis of the speech acts is based on an adaptation of the categorical scheme developed by Blum-Kulka et al. (1989).The results show that speakers of English and Spanish differ in their choice of (in)directness levels, head-act modifications, and the politeness types of males and females in both cultures.Reference to an extensive bibliography and the thorough discussion of methodological issues concerning speech act studies deserve the attention of students of pragmatics as well as readers interested in cultural matters.

    Kurzfassung: Dans la corrida classique, d'origine andalouse, le taureau est mis à mort. Dans la course camarguaise, les règles proscrivent son exécution ; il est traité comme un héros qui porte les valeurs de la collectivité. Frédéric Saumade, à partir d'études de terrain effectuées en Andalousie et en Camargue, met au jour toute la cohérence qui, au-delà de la différence des jeux d'arènes et des techniques d'élevage, relie ces pratiques. Dans les deux cas, le bovin « sauvage » apparaît comme une métaphore de la société. L'homme entre en contact avec la bête afin d'établir avec elle un dialogue traduit dans le rite et le langage tauromachiques. Cette relation est considérée selon une double temporalité : celle de l'histoire, constitutive de la mythologie taurine, et celle qui suit et répète le cycle des saisons. Ainsi se révèlent une éthique traditionaliste - replacer l'homme dans une nature idéalisée - et des aspirations modernes exprimées dans le spectacle urbain des arènes.
